# The rasas of devotion > [!summary] > *Rasa refers to the transcendental mellow or relationship between the living entity and the Supreme Lord. There are five primary rasas: neutrality (śānta), servitude (dāsya), friendship (sākhya), parenthood (vātsalya), and conjugal love (mādhurya). Each successive rasa includes the qualities of the previous ones, with conjugal love containing all other rasas. These relationships are eternal and constitute the highest spiritual experience.* ## The Five Primary Rasas !cc/madhya/19/185#translation !cc/madhya/8/92#translation ## Śānta-rasa — Neutrality !cc/madhya/19/183-184 !sb/7/6/2 ## Dāsya-rasa — Servitude !cc/madhya/8/71 !sb/10/9/21 ## Sākhya-rasa — Friendship !cc/madhya/8/74 !cc/adi/10/116 ## Vātsalya-rasa — Parental Affection !cc/madhya/8/76 !sb/10/9/3 ## Mādhurya-rasa — Conjugal Love !cc/madhya/8/79 !cc/adi/4/44 ## Related Articles - The nine processes of devotional service — The practice - The supremacy of bhakti — Why bhakti - Love for Kṛṣṇa — The supreme goal - Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī — Mādhurya-rasa personified - The gopīs of Vṛndāvana — Examples of mādhurya ## From the Index - Rasas — Transcendental mellows - Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu — The science of devotional mellows - Love for Lord — Supreme expression of rasa - Vṛndāvana — Where all rasas are manifest
