# Bhīṣmadeva > [!summary] > *Bhīṣmadeva is one of the twelve mahājanas (great authorities) on devotional service. As the grandfather of both the Pāṇḍavas and Kauravas, he was the most respected elder in the Kuru dynasty. Though bound by duty to fight for the Kauravas, his heart was always with Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍavas. At the time of his death, lying on a bed of arrows, Bhīṣma delivered profound teachings on dharma and devotion, and departed from this world while meditating on the beautiful form of Lord Kṛṣṇa standing before him.* !images/all-catalogs/0031_SB-1_2_5.jpg ## A Great Authority and Mahajana !sb/1/9/16 !sb/1/9/19 ## Preacher of Dharma !sb/1/9/9 !sb/1/9/5 ## Accepts Kṛṣṇa's Godhood !sb/1/9/18 !sb/1/9/34 ## His Chivalrous Relationship with Kṛṣṇa !sb/1/9/33 !sb/1/9/38 ## Departs in Trance of Devotion !sb/1/9/30 !sb/1/9/42 ## Attains the Spiritual World !sb/1/9/44 !sb/1/9/45 ## From the Scriptures **Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto 1**: - SB 1.9: The Passing Away of Bhīṣmadeva — His teachings and departure in Kṛṣṇa's presence **Bhagavad-gītā**: - Chapter 1: Observing the Armies — Bhīṣma among the warriors - Chapter 2: Contents of the Gītā Summarized — Reference to his greatness ## Related Articles - Arjuna — His grandson - King Yudhiṣṭhira — His grandson - The twelve Mahājanas — Bhīṣma as one of the twelve authorities - The Pāṇḍava family and associates — His family connections ## From the Index - Bhīṣmadeva — The grandfather and authority - Mahājanas — Bhīṣmadeva as one of twelve - Death — Bhīṣmadeva's example
