# The regulative principles
*The regulative principles are the foundation of spiritual life. These "principles of freedom" help control the lower tendencies and elevate one to the platform of pure devotional service. In the Krishna consciousness movement, the four regulative principles — no meat eating, no intoxication, no illicit sex, and no gambling — create the foundation for spiritual advancement. By following these principles under the guidance of the spiritual master, one gradually develops attachment to devotional service and eventually rises to the platform of spontaneous love for God.*
