# The meaning of sacrifice *Sacrifice (yajña) is an essential part of human life prescribed in the Vedas for pleasing the Supreme Lord Vishnu. In previous ages, elaborate fire sacrifices were performed, but in Kali-yuga such rituals are impossible to execute properly. The Vedic scriptures therefore prescribe the sankirtana-yajña — the congregational chanting of the holy names — as the most effective sacrifice for this age.* ## All Sacrifices Are Meant for Satisfying Vishnu !bg/3/9 !bg/5/29 ## Sacrifice Produces Rain, Food, and Prosperity !bg/3/14 !bg/3/12 ## Chanting Is the Sacrifice for Kali-yuga !sb/4/7/45 !sb/4/6/53 ## The Best Sacrifice Is Distributing Krishna Consciousness !cc/adi/8/17 !sb/10/7/17 ## Sacrifice with Knowledge Is Superior !bg/4/33 !bg/4/28 ## Pure Devotional Service Transcends All Sacrifices !sb/4/7/41 !bg/8/28 ## From the Index - Sacrifice — Yajña - Yajña — Sacrifice to Vishnu - Chanting Hare Krishna — The yuga-dharma
