# Lord Kapila the philosopher
![[images/all-catalogs/0107_SB-3-4-1.jpg]]
*Lord Kapila is an incarnation of the Supreme Lord who appeared as the son of Kardama Muni and Devahuti. He is counted among the twelve mahajanas and is renowned for teaching the original Sankhya philosophy — the analytical study of matter and spirit leading to devotion to God. His teachings to His mother Devahuti, recorded in the third canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, are a comprehensive explanation of devotional service, the material elements, and the path to liberation. The atheist Kapila who later distorted Sankhya philosophy is different from this original, divine Kapila.*
