He is counted among the twelve mahajanas and is renowned for teaching the original Sankhya philosophy — the analytical study of matter and spirit leading to devotion to God. His teachings to His mother Devahuti, recorded in the third canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, are a comprehensive explanation of devotional service, the material elements, and the path to liberation.
