# King Parikshit the listener !images/all-catalogs/0032_SB-2_1_1.jpg *Maharaja Parikshit is the ideal hearer of Srimad-Bhagavatam. As the grandson of Arjuna and a great devotee from birth, he was saved by Lord Krishna in the womb from the deadly brahmastra weapon of Ashvatthama. When cursed to die in seven days by a brahmana's son, Parikshit renounced his kingdom and sat on the bank of the Ganges to hear from Sukadeva Gosvami. His perfect questions and unwavering attention during the last week of his life resulted in the recitation of the entire Srimad-Bhagavatam. He attained liberation by hearing.* ## An Ideal King and Pure Devotee !sb/1/12/4 !sb/1/16/10 ## Saved by Krishna in the Womb !sb/1/12/7 !sb/1/12/9 ## Accepts the Curse as the Lord's Mercy !sb/1/19/4 !sb/1/19/15 ## Renounces Everything to Hear Bhagavatam !sb/1/19/5 !sb/1/19/7 ## The Exemplary Disciple !sb/1/19/37 !sb/2/8/24 ## Attains Perfection Through Hearing !sb/1/18/16 !sb/1/12/3 ## From the Scriptures **Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto 1**: - SB 1.12: Birth of Emperor Parīkṣit — His miraculous birth - SB 1.16: How Parīkṣit Received the Age of Kali — His encounter with Kali - SB 1.17: Punishment and Reward of Kali — His administration of justice - SB 1.18: Mahārāja Parīkṣit Cursed by a Brāhmaṇa Boy — The curse - SB 1.19: The Appearance of Śukadeva Gosvāmī — His preparation to die **Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto 12**: - SB 12.6: Mahārāja Parīkṣit Passes Away — His final moments ## Related Articles - The speaker and listener of Bhagavatam — His role in receiving the Bhagavatam - The Pandava family and associates — His family network - Sukadeva Goswami the speaker — Who instructed him - Arjuna the warrior devotee — His grandfather - The importance of hearing — The process he perfected ## From the Index - Parikshit Maharaja — The ideal hearer - Srimad-Bhagavatam — Heard by Parikshit - Hearing — Parikshit's example
