# Fasting and Ekadashi
*Fasting is an important spiritual discipline that helps control the senses and purify the consciousness. Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight, is especially sacred and devotees abstain from grains on this day. King Ambarisha Maharaja was famous for his strict observance of Ekadashi. Fasting helps one conquer hunger and thirst and creates a favorable condition for spiritual practices. However, fasting performed for material reasons or with false pride is condemned, while fasting in Krishna consciousness brings great spiritual benefit.*
