# Charity and giving
*Charity (dana) is an important aspect of spiritual life, especially for householders. The scriptures describe three types of charity — in goodness, passion, and ignorance — depending on the recipient, time, and attitude of the giver. Charity in the mode of goodness is given without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, to a worthy person such as a brahmana or Vaishnava. The highest form of charity is to give spiritual knowledge, which delivers one from material existence. Money used in Krishna's service becomes spiritualized.*
