# Charity and giving *Charity (dana) is an important aspect of spiritual life, especially for householders. The scriptures describe three types of charity — in goodness, passion, and ignorance — depending on the recipient, time, and attitude of the giver. Charity in the mode of goodness is given without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, to a worthy person such as a brahmana or Vaishnava. The highest form of charity is to give spiritual knowledge, which delivers one from material existence. Money used in Krishna's service becomes spiritualized.* ## Charity Is a Divine Quality !bg/16/1-3 !sb/1/2/7 ## Charity in the Mode of Goodness !bg/17/20 !sb/7/14/38 ## Charity Should Be Given to the Worthy !bg/11/48 !sb/7/15/2 ## Charity Purifies the Giver !bg/12/11 !bg/18/5 ## The Highest Form of Charity !sb/3/7/41 ## Charity for the Lord's Satisfaction !cc/adi/17/76 !sb/2/9/36 ## From the Index - Charity — Giving in devotion - Sacrifice — Related practice - Welfare Work — Helping others
