New Vrindavana, 1974 - SB. 1.2.19 - Part 3 - (DVD 10)
S.B. 1:2:19 [03:08]“tada rajas-tamo-bhavah kama-lobhadayas ca ye ceta etair anaviddham sthitam sattve prasidati”
[03:24]Everyone wants happiness, peace of mind. How it is possible? That is explained here.
[03:35]“ceta etair anaviddham” Everything is within the heart. So, we are being pierced by these
[03:52]‘rajas/tamo-guna.’ ‘Rajas’ means passion, desire for material enjoyment.
[04:04]And ‘tamas’ means ignorance. Neither enjoyment nor knowledge,
[04:13]Just like animals. Animals have no material enjoyment neither knowledge.
[04:24]Similarly, persons who are infected by the ‘tamo-guna,’
[04:35]they do not know what is the meaning of life, neither animals.
[04:42]People are becoming affected by this ‘tamo-guna.’
[04:50]Therefore, even in this western country, they are turning to the hippies.
[05:03]No material enjoyment, no spiritual knowledge, simply in darkness.
[05:10]So, if we develop Krishna Consciousness, just the process of hearing,
[05:25]“srnvatam sva-katha krishna,” if we simply practice this process, hearing about Krishna,
[05:36]then gradually the darkness of ignorance and passion will disappear.
[05:48]“ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-mahadavagni-nirvapanam.”
[05:56] We are suffering in this material life on account of these three modes of material nature,
[06:06]especially the modes of passion and ignorance.
[06:12]So here is the process how to get out of these modes of passion and ignorance, especially.
[06:22]Also material goodness. Sometimes material goodness is also a cause of bondage.
[06:31]A person falsely thinks that now I have become a Brahmin or I have got a sacred thread
[06:44]therefore my business is finished. Now I can do anything. It doesn’t matter.
[06:54]That is also another bondage. We have to still advance. Even if you are a Brahmin,
[07:04]actually a Brahmin does not think like that. That because I have got a sacred thread,
[07:10]my business is finished. We offer the sacred thread but don’t make your business finished there.
[07:20]There is further progressive life. After becoming Brahmin one has to become a Vaisnava.
[07:33]This process of Krishna Consciousness is that we shall initiate several disciples.
[07:44]The first initiation and the second initiation.
[07:51]The first initiation is to give chance of chanting Hare Krishna mantra.
[07:59]The beads are there and the initiated member is advised to refrain from sinful activities
[08:10]and in pure heart, chant Hare Krishna. Not in pure heart, heart is already polluted,
[08:19]but offenselessly. There are ten kinds of offenses. That we have explained.
[08:28]The first offense is ‘guror avajna sruti-sastra-nindanam.’
[08:35]There are ten kinds of offenses. Some of our disciples are going to be initiated, they should always
[08:49]remember how to avoid the offenses. Of course in the beginning the offenses are there.
[08:58]But if we try to avoid them, then there will be ‘namabhasa.’
[09:07]‘Namabhasa’ means almost pure chanting of the Holy Name. That is called ‘namabhasa.’
[09:19]And if you attain the state of ‘namabhasa’ you become immediately liberated.
[09:27]And then when you can chant the ‘suddha nama,’ Holy Name,
[09:34]pure uncontaminated by the material modes of nature, then you develop your love of Krishna.
[09:43]So, here it is stated, ‘rajas-tamo-bhavah,’ We are afflicted with the three kinds of modes of nature,
[09:57]So out of the three two are very dangerous. What are they? ‘rajas-tamo.’ Passion and ignorance.
[10:11]The whole material world is going on, on the basis of these two qualities, passion and ignorance.
[10:22]What are the symptoms of passion? ‘kama-lobhadayas ca ye.’
[10:31]Too much attraction for sense gratification. This is called passion.
[10:43] And ‘lobha’ greediness, not satisfied.
[10:51]Now we are coming from a cottage. Very nice cottage, self-sufficient,
[11:02]little land also, growing vegetable. Nice cottage, very warm.
[11:10]There is no need of air conditioning. We can live very simple life anywhere, any part of the world.
[11:22]There are so many jungles. You cut one or two trees, and with the logs you can make a little cottage
[11:34]and after, the trees being cut, the land becomes open, so you can utilize the land
[11:46]for growing food grains for pasturing ground.
[11:51]And if you have got cows, food grains, vegetables, and a cottage,
[11:58]then were is your economic problem? Where is your economic problem?
[12:05]Live peacefully in the open air, take sufficient milk, all vitamins
[12:13]and vegetable full of vitamins. A, B, C, D up to K, vitamins.
[12:24]You get nice life and save time for chanting Hare Krishna. This is life.
[12:35]We are trying to introduce in this New Vrndavana colony, this simple life, but,
[12:46]‘kama-lobhadayas ca ye.’
[12:50]We can lead very simple life, but because we are infected by the ‘rajo-guna’ and ‘tamo-guna,’
[12:57]we require the pigeon holes of skyscraper residences.
[13:02]Unnecessarily… Why? Your time is so valuable that you cannot get back your life,
[13:18]one day of your life, or one moment of your life by paying millions of dollars.
[13:24]What is the date today?
[13:30]Twentieth? Twenty-first. Now, the twentieth July, 1974 which is past of our lives,
[13:41]it cannot be returned even if you try to bribe material nature millions of dollars.
[13:47]What is gone, is gone. Therefore Canakya Pandita said, very good moral instructor,
[13:59]“ayusah ksana eko ‘pi na labhya svarna-kotibhih.”
[14:03]Even the moment of time you cannot get back by payment of millions of golden coins.
[14:14]That is not possible. “na cen nirar thakam nitih ka ce hanis tato dhika.”
[14:22]If such valuable time you simply waste, then just calculate what is your loss.
[14:30]Practically, from monetary point of view.
[14:34]One moment of your life cannot be returned by millions of dollars.
[14:42]Therefore, our Rupa Goswami also teaches, ‘avyartha kalatvam.’
[14:51]A Krishna conscious person should see whether my time has become wasted.
[15:00]Whether I am utilizing my time, the short duration of my life, properly.
[15:09]All Krishna conscious persons should be vigilant to see that the time is not wasted.
[15:19]Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu therefore advises, “kirtaniyah sada harih
[15:28]trnad api sunicena taror iva sanisnuna amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih.”
[15:38]We have therefore introduced chanting Hare Krishna 24 hours.
[15:48]I’m glad to see all the devotees, they’re telling me that this is nice practice.
[15:57]It must be. Chant Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna. 24 hours.
[16:03]While working, even in sleeping. If you practice, in sleep also you will chant Hare Krishna.
[16:11]That is possible. It is not impossible. It is a fact.
[16:18]So, the human life, if you want actually peace and prosperity, as it is stated,
[16:30]“ceta etair anaviddham sthitam sattve prasidati.”
[16:35]You have to keep yourself always in the ‘sattva-guna,’ the modes of goodness, brahminical platform.
[16:48]“sattva.. samo damas.. titiksa arjavam.. jnanam vijnanam astikyam brahma-karma sva bhava-jam.”
[16:58]So, those who are going to be initiated Brahmin, they must have got.
[17:08]Otherwise what is the use of taking a sacred thread?
[17:12]No, don’t think by simply having a sacred thread, the business is finished.
[17:20]No. They should be practiced. How to keep yourself on the platform of ‘sattva-guna.’
[17:30]That platform of ‘sattva-guna,’ can be maintained when you are engaged in devotional service.
[17:41]Here it is said, “sthitam sattve prasidati.”
[17:47]Simply being situated on the platform of goodness, you’ll be happy.
[17:55]‘Prasidati,’ you will feel happiness because there will be knowledge.
[18:01]But, the ‘bhakti’ process is so transcendental that by discharge of devotional service
[18:13]you will be far above the ‘sattva-guna.’ ‘Sattva-guna,’ that is material. Good qualities.
[18:21]But this material good qualities can be contaminated, sometimes.
[18:27]Because the material nature is very powerful,
[18:31]‘daivi hy esa guna-mayi mama maya duratyaya.’ Very, very powerful.
[18:39]Therefore, it sometimes is said, that those who are not sticking to the principles,
[18:46]they fall down, immediately. That material nature will drag you, “please come in.”
[18:54]But if you remain fixed-up in devotional service, then you go above the ‘sattva-guna.’
[19:05]That is also stated in Bhagavad-Gita,
[19:09]“mam ca you ‘vyabhicarena bhakti-yogena sevate sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhuyaya kalpate.”
[19:19]So, we are introducing this process to become directly a pure devotee. A pure devotee.
[19:35]Devotee, pure and impure? Yes.
[19:39]Impure means those who are still contaminated by these three qualities:
[19:45]‘sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna.’
[19:53]And pure means above. No contamination.
[19:56]So, take directly because in this age it is very difficult to go step by step.
[20:05]Life is very short.
[20:07]You do not know at any moment material world is full of danger, especially in this age.
[20:16]“prayenalpayusah sabhya kalav asmin yuge janah mandah sumanda-matayo manda-bhagya hy upadrutah.”
[20:28]This is the position. Almost everyone of us, we have got very short life, duration of life.
[20:38]Although in this age the standard of life should be one hundred years, but who is going to live?
[20:46]It is reducing on account of sinful activities the duration of age is reducing, memory is reducing.
[20:55]Therefore, the short cut policy to make our life successful as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
[21:08]has introduced and instructed that,
[21:15]“param vijayate sri-krishna-sankirtanam
[21:19]ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-mahadavagni-nirvapanam
[21:24]sreyah-kairava-candrika vitaranam vidya-vadhu-jivanam
[21:29]anandambudhi-vardhanam prati-padam purnamrtasvadanam
[21:34]param vijayate sri-krishna-sankirtanam.”
[21:38]This ‘sri-krishna-sankirtana’ will give you life, so those who are going to be initiated,
[21:46]they must try to avoid, not try - they must - the ten kinds of offenses,
[21:56]then the pure Name will be manifest, then you will try to chant more and more and more.
[22:06]This is the effect. So, actually we want peace and prosperity
[22:17]because we are part and parcel of Krishna. Krishna is full of prosperity.
[22:24]And why we should be not in prosperity? This is the material contamination.
[22:31]So, ‘kama-lobhadayas ca ye.’ The material contamination means unnecessarily lusty.
[22:42]Unnecessary. But if you practice our… these unnecessary desires
[22:53]for sense gratification will be reduced. “bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra caisa.”
[23:03]‘Bhakti,’ devotion life, is so nice, as you advance in devotional life
[23:12]you become disinterested, practically no interest in material activities.
[23:18]That is the test. Srila Yamunacarya says,
[23:26]“yadavadhi mama cetah Krishna-padaravinde
[23:31]nava-nava-rasa-dhaman unyata rantum asit
[23:35]tadavadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
[23:38]bhavati mukha-vikarah sustu nisthivanam ca.”
[23:41]Here in the material world, the highest pleasure is sex.
[23:48]Everyone, not only human society, dog society, cat society, bird society,
[23:56]they’re all after sex life. “yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham.”
[24:04]The most abominable happiness.
[24:07]That is the first class happiness in the material world.
[24:12]But, if you engage your mind in Krishna,
[24:20]“yadavadhi mama ceta Krishna-padaravinde.”
[24:24]Yamunacarya, he was a king. So he says from his practical experience,
[24:31]that since I engage my mind on the lotus feet of Krishna,
[24:37]“nava-nava-dhaman udyata rantum,” and increasing every moment,
[24:44]transcendental mellows, newer and new.
[24:48]From that time, “bata nari-sangame smaryamane,” when I think of sex life
[24:58]with woman, immediately I spit on it. This is the test. The more you advance in
[25:09]Krishna Consciousness you forget the topmost pleasure of material life, sex life.
[25:18]That is the test.
[25:20]So, the sex life is passion. ‘raja,’ ‘kama.’ So here it is said, “tada rajas-tamo-bhavah.”
[25:35]The result of passion is sex. ‘kama,’ and ‘lobha.’
[25:45]No satisfaction. So, spiritual life means above all these things.
[25:52]You cannot say that you have all the qualities of ‘rajas-tamo-bhavah,’
[25:58]lusty desire, greediness, and still you are advancing, that is hypocrisy.
[26:04]That is not spiritual life. Spiritual life’s test is these, “kama-lobhadayas ca ye.”
[26:12]Simply you shall be situated in, ‘sattva-guna.’ ‘ceta ethair anaviddham.’
[26:21]Just like the, you have seen the Cupid picture, it has got an arrow pierced,
[26:30]therefore this word is used. “Ceta etair anaviddham.” Without being pierced.
[26:38]‘viddham,’ ‘anaviddham.’
[26:44]As soon as you are pierced by an arrow the painful condition begins immediately.
[26:50]So we are always painful because the heart is pierced by the arrow of the Cupid.
[26:58]So, if you remain on the ‘sattva-guna,’ the goodness,
[27:05]then your heart will not be pierced by the arrow of Cupid. This is the test.
[27:12]Then you get happiness. Thank you very much.
