New Vrindavana 1974
[20:40]srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah hrdy antah stho hy abhadrani vidhunoti suhrt satam
[22:15]Sri Krsna, the Personality of Godhead, who is the Paramatma [Supersoul] in everyone’s
[22:20]heart and the benefactor of the truthful devotee, cleanses desire for material enjoyment
[22:27]from the heart of the devotee who relishes His messages,
[22:33]which are in themselves virtuous when properly heard and chanted.
[22:36] [23:01]Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita: “suhrdam sarva-bhutanam.”
[23:09] [23:14]bhoktaram yajna tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram
[23:18]suhrdam sarva-bhutanam jnatva mam santim rcchati
[23:24]This is the way of ‘shanti’. Shanti means peacefulness.
[23:32]How it is? Not by this peace treaty.
[23:40]That kind of shanti or peace is going on perpetually and there is never shanti.
[23:47]It is simply formality.
[23:50]Shanti can not be attained without Krsna consciousness.
[23:57]Peacefulness is not possible.
[24:00]Temporarily, you can make some arrangement, but it has no value.
[24:08]Even amongst the relatives, father, the son or husband & wife, brother and mother…
[24:20]There is no peace.
[24:22]Everywhere there is some disagreement and separtaion.
[24:29]This is the lawbook of the material world, not of the spiritual world.
[24:35]Spiritual world, there is shanti.
[24:40]In the material world: enviousness.
[24:45]If you improve more than me I will become your enemy.
[24:52]This is the nature of material civilization.
[24:57]Therefore the “Bhagavata Dharma” or the cult of Srimad-Bhagavatam
[25:06]is not meant for the materialistic person.
[25:11]It is for the person who is spiritually interested.
[25:18]Spiritually interested means he is a paramahamsa.
[25:25]“Param” means the supreme and “hamsa” means the swan.
[25:35]Paramahamsa means the Supreme Swan.
[25:42]What is the special qualification of the swan?
[25:50]That if you give the swan to drink milk mixed with water,
[25:59]it has got a special power, she will drink the milk portion, and the water portion will not touch.
[26:08]Hamsa. And Paramahamsa means the person who knows what is the essence of this material world.
[26:23]He is called Paramahamsa, who knows.
[26:28]Just like we are all living entities. You have got your body, I have got my body, everyone has got his body.
[26:41]But what is the essence of this body?
[26:45]The essence of this body is the life.
[26:51]If there is no life, you may have a very nice, beautiful body, I may have very strong, beautiful body,
[27:00]but as soon as the life is gone it has no matter.
[27:06]Therefore the essence of the body is the life.
[27:13]Similarly, this big gigantic body, cosmic manifestation, there is also life.
[27:23]Otherwise how it is going on?
[27:25]Anyone can understand this philosophy.
[27:29]That this body is very important, belonging to a certain saintly personality, scientist,
[27:40]or philosopher, politician, whatever it may be, but so long the life is there.
[27:47]Otherwise, no more politician, no more scientist, no more rich man.
[27:55]Similarly it is very simple to think: unless there is life within this cosmic manifestation,
[28:04]how things are going on so nicely?
[28:07]So, one who is interested with that essence of this gigantic cosmic manifestation,
[28:17]he is called Paramahamsa.
[28:19]He is no more interested in any others.
[28:24]Active principle, what is the active principal?
[28:29]Just like medical science they take active principle from a drug.
[28:37]Similarly, those who are Paramahamsa, they can understand
[28:46]what is the active principle of this cosmic manifestation.
[28:51]There must be something, there is no doubt.
[28:56]But one who is interested to know this.
[28:59]Therefore in the beginning of the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said:
[29:05]dharmah projjhita-kaitavo ‘tra paramo nirmatsaranam satam…
[29:15]Here in the Srimad-Bhagavatam the so-called religious principles… [29:25]
[29:29]…anadir adir govindah sarva karana karanam.
[29:32]So with this idea, to become Paramahamsa,
[29:40]or to understand the central point, because if you simply understand
[29:47]the central point then everything is understood. That is Vedic injunction.
[29:53]“yasmin vijnate sarvam etam vijnatam…”
[29:58]If you simply understand Krsna, then everything becomes understood.
[30:05]It is so nice. “Yasmin vijnate…,” by understanding the Absolute Truth, Krsna.
[30:13]“sarvam etam vijnatam bhavanti” everything becomes understood.
[30:20]Just like one big scientist, our disciple, Dr. Swarup Damodar Das, M.S. Ph.D.,
[30:38]He has dedicated his very advanced scientific book,
[30:45]We cannot even utter the words!
[30:48] [30:56]He is a big scientist, advocated by many universities…
[31:02]Harvard University, Calcutta University
[31:04]Here in Boston University and, then again, California University.
[31:12]He is not ordinary man, but he admits in his dedication that:
[31:21]“I dedicate this book to my spiritual master, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada,
[31:26]because he has given me the real knowledge that Krsna is the origin of everything.
[31:33]Now, I am not a scientist, but I could teach a scientist, or convince him,
[31:46]that Krsna is the origin of everything.
[31:48]Unless he is convinced that Krsna is the origin of everything, how he has written this?
[31:55]So many scientists will challenge him, but he is prepared to accept the challenge.
[32:01]So, how it was possible for me to convince a big scientist?
[32:08]The fact is, as I have stated, that if you understand Krsna then you can teach
[32:20]even the greatest scientist, the greatest philosopher, the greatest politician, everybody.
[32:25]That is Krsna consciousness.
[32:28]You don’t require to be a great scientist to teach a great scientist.
[32:33]But if you simply understand Krsna, then you’ll be able to teach even the greatest scientist.
[32:40] [32:47]The greatest philosopher, the greatest anyone, let them come.
[32:50]We shall teach him. We shall become their teacher.
[32:53]We challenge!
[32:56]Why? Because we know a little of Krsna.
[33:01]There is a verse in the Bhagavata: “athapi te deva padambuja -dvayam..” [33:14] [33:21]One devotee [Lord Brahma] says: “My dear Lord, one who has got a little fragmental grace
[33:29]of your lotus feet, he knows the absolute truth.[SB 10:14:29]
[33:33]
[33:45]A devotee of Krsna, he can understand the tattva or the truth,
[33:53]simply by a little mercy of Krsna.
[33:58]Others, they may continue to speculate for many, many births but they will not be able to understand.
[34:05]Therefore Bhagavad-gita, Krsna, says: “bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate.”
[34:12]Just like this scientist, he has surrendered. His study of science is perfect.
[34:22]When one surrenders to Krsna, perfectly knowing well that Krsna is the origin of everything,
[34:32]that is the perfection of knowledge.
[34:36]In another place, I think in this chapter, you will find:
[34:42]“atha pumbhir dvija-srestha varnasrama-vibhagasah
[34:47]svanusthitasya dharmasya samsiddhir hari-tosanam”
[34:53]Everyone is engaged in different occupational duties, whatever he may be.
[35:01]But one should be interested to know, whether by executing this kind of duty,
[35:10]whether I’m becoming perfect.
[35:12]But they have no such inquiries. Neither do they know what is perfection.
[35:21]That human life is meant for achieving perfection. That is the aim of life.
[35:27]So, there are so many things, but we must know, that if we understand Krsna,
[35:39]slightly, in truth, then our lives will become perfect.
[35:46]Not that we can understand Krsna fully. He is so big, so unlimited.
[35:54]It is not possible. Krsna Himself does not know how great He is.
[36:01]God is great, we say, but we do not know, how great is God.
[36:10]That is indicated. So that greatness, you cannot understand Krsna or Krsna’s greatness
[36:22]life after life, hearing with thousands of millions of ears, still you will not be able to understand.
[36:31]Ananta-deva is explaining about Krsna by ananta [unlimited] faces.
[36:42]Unlimited mouths. (He has got many mouths)
[36:48]Still He could not finish. So that is not possible.
[36:54]But if you try to understand about Krsna then Krsna will help you how to understand.
[37:04]That is said here: “srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah..” Krsna is so kind.
[37:11]If anyone is interested to know about Krsna, to hear about Krsna,
[37:17]then: “srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah..”
[37:23]So Krsna, to know about Krsna, even if you do not understand Krsna,
[37:31]if you simply chant: Krsna, Krsna, actually we are advised Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, he!
[37:39]Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, Krsna… If you simply chant like that you will become perfect.
[37:47]Immediately you become perfect.
[37:50]Hearing. “srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya…” Hearing and chanting means you will become perfect.
[37:59]We are all sinful.. Material world.
[38:06]Anyone who is living in this material world must be considered sinful.
[38:12]It is a question of degree.
[38:15]Unless we are sinful, there is no question of accepting this material body.
[38:23]“bhutva bhutva paraliyate”
[38:27]We are committing sinful life therefore next life we are getting another type of body.
[38:34]Same thing is explained in Bhagavad-gita. Why different types of body?
[38:41]Why not the same body? No. “karanam guna-sango ‘sya sad-asad-yoni-janmasu”
[38:49]Because we are associating with certain qualities of material nature.
[38:57]There are three qualities of material nature: sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna.
[39:04]So one of them I must associate with. One of them.
[39:10]If we associate with sattva-guna we get a different type of body.
[39:16]If we associate with rajo-guna then we get a different type of body.
[39:24]If we associate with the tamo-guna, then we get a different type of body.
[39:27]This is the law of nature. Exactly like that.
[39:31]If you infect a certain type of disease, you take that disease. Natures law. You cannot avoid it.
[39:41]If you infect typhoid disease then you must suffer from typhoid.
[39:46]Similarly, we are given this certain living condition, “bhutva bhutva paraliyate.”
[39:53]..Our position is that we are changing body after body, and we are suffering according to the body.
[40:03]If we want to stop our suffering then we must stop getting another material body.
[40:11]This is the philosophy. And that you can do only by Krsna consciousness.
[40:18]Otherwise you will not stop it.
[40:21]Otherwise maybe in the mode of goodness, that much.
[40:28]Here in the material world you can elevate up to the mode of goodness.
[40:34]And what is the result of goodness?
[40:40]“urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha…“If you associate with goodness,
[40:45]then you can be promoted to the very, very higher planetary systems: urdhvam…
[40:51]There are urdhvam, adham and madhyam.
[40:56]The planetary systems are divided. Therefore it is called “three worlds.”
[41:01]There are upper planetary systems. Just like this Earth is called “bhu-loka.”
[41:08]It is situated in the middle.
[41:10]And above us there are seven lokas. And down there are seven lokas.
[41:16]So, in the middle position, if we can associate with goodness,
[41:25]then we can be promoted to the higher planetary systems.
[41:29]Like Brahma, he has got very, very long duration of life.
[41:35]The standard of living in other planets, other planetary systems, is thousands, thousands times more comfortable.
[41:46]We can get up, “urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha..,” you can be promoted.
[41:51]“madhye tisthanti rajasah..”
[41:53]And if you associate with rajo-guna, then you can remain in the middle position.
[42:02]And if you associate with tamo-guna, then you go down.
[42:06]Just like here we see some of the animals are meant for being slaughtered.
[42:13]So, in previous life, they also slaughtered. So therefore they are waiting to be slaughtered.
[42:23]Mamsha… is a Sanskrit word of the meaning: “mam” means me. “sah” means he.
[42:31]“I eat you this time, you eat me next time.” This is called karma-bandhana.
[42:39]“yajnarthat karmano ‘nyatra loko ‘yam karma-bandhanah..”
[42:45]Now we are very happy that we have got so many living stock,
[42:51]I shall kill one and eat–enjoy.
[42:55]But he does not know that he is making the path smooth that he’ll be also killed.
[43:03]This is karma-bandhana.
[43:05]So this is going on, “bhutva bhutva pralyate.”
[43:11]We are getting one type of body and are eating or sleeping or mating according to the body.
[43:19]There are so many hundreds of thousands… eating, meat-eating,
[43:23]sleeping, sex life and defending, everywhere this is taking place.
[43:27]Either an insect or a big man, everyone knows how to eat, how to sleep,
[43:34]how to enjoy sex life and how to defend.
[43:38]In its own. That is not real business of human life.
[43:42]Real business of human life is here mentioned: “srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah..”
[43:50]Just try to hear about Krsna.
[43:54]We are opening so many centres just to give chance to people to hear about Krsna. That’s all.
[44:02]And if one hears, or chants, immediately he becomes purified.
[44:09]”..punya-sravana-kirtanah”
[44:12]And as much as, the more you become purified, “hrdy antah stho hy abhadrani vidhunoti..”
[44:20]Then all the dirty things accumulated within the heart on account of contamination of this material world
[44:29]that becomes cleansed.
[44:31]And as soon as it is cleansed, you understand that you are eternally related with Krsna,
[44:38]He is the Supreme Master and we are servitor.
[44:43]Let us serve Krsna. That is perfection of life. Thank you very much.
