# December 5 ## Spoken on December 5 *Lectures from this day: 15 recordings* --- **[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 9.18–19](spoken/1966/661205bg.ny.md)** > But in the *Bhagavad-gītā* says, "No, I am the Supreme." The Lord says, "I am the *prabhava.* From every... Everything, whatever you see, that is emanating from Me." So we have no practical economic problem. God is maintaining everyone. The production which is being made all over the world, that is sufficient to provide all the population of the world. That is God's arrangement. There is no scarcity. But because we have made our own rules and regulation, although we have got enough grains produced, we can produce much more than what is needed by us, and I can throw in the ocean the excess. Still, if some poor country or poor brother comes, I refuse. This is called... Because we do not know that our destination is God, therefore the violation of the rules of nature, violation of the laws of God, we are making, and we are becoming entrapped by this material nature. This is a fact. > So by their energy, living entities, the matter has developed. Matter is not prominent. Don't give more importance to the matter. The important is the living entity. And what is this living entity? The living entity is the part and parcel of the Supreme Lord. Therefore He is..., He is the cause of the seeds of living entity. *Mamaivāṁśo jīva-bhūtaḥ jīva-loke sanātanaḥ*. --- **[1966: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.125–136](spoken/1966/661205cc.ny.md)** > Now, here the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, is personally speaking *Bhagavad-gītā.* Is it not *Veda*? That is *Veda.* That is real *Veda. Sarva-upaniṣade.* In the Gītā-māhātmya it is said, "This is the essence of all *Veda.*" This is *Vedānta.* Simply by studying *Bhagavad-gītā,* one becomes a learned science in the science of God. So *śāstra-kahe.Śāstra-kahe.* And what [is] that *śāstra*? The essence of all *śāstra,* the essence of all scripture, asks you to do—the *śāstra* says, the Lord says—*sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja* : "Give up everything. Just surrender unto Me." This is the most confidential part of knowledge. So "give up everything" means there are different processes, different processes: ritualistic processes, different religious processes, philosophical processes, meditation, so many. "Give up all. Simply surrender to Kṛṣṇa." > So why should we play in that way? We are actually king's son, the Supreme, Parameśvara, the Supreme Father. He is not only Supreme by name, but He is *aiśvaryasya:* He is the proprietor of all wealth. *Samagrasya*. All wealth. *Samagrasya* means all... *Aiśvaryasya samagrasya,vīryasya*. Here my father may be weak. Oh, he cannot give me protection. When death is drawing me, dragging me, oh, my father cannot give me protection. But if you actually approach the Supreme Father, there is no death. Death cannot touch you, you have got such a father. Just approach him. *Aisvrayasaya samagraya viryas.*.. He is so powerful. Even in this world, why you? You are conscious of your father, Kṛṣṇa conscious. Your father gives you all protection, *kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati*. --- **[1970: Conversation](spoken/1970/701205r2.ind)** > Similarly we part and parcel..., the *karmīs,* they are trying to enjoy themselves in this world. So their mistake. They cannot enjoy, therefore they are unhappy here. The *jñānīs* they are rejecting this world, *brahma satyaṁ jagan mithyā*. So it is the hands business to take a sweetmeat and if it is robbed for personal enjoyment, it is waste of time. It will gives us, so I cannot enjoy therefore I stick to this, thrown away. That is not limited. But if the finger takes it and gives it to the stomach that is its real duty. > If you want to do something which is not, then you should misinform people. This is this, this is that. If you receive a wood and if you want to prove that it is gold. Then you have to make some propaganda, false propaganda. That's all. Because actually it is wood. So how can you prove that it is gold? That means you have to make some false propaganda and make wood so they will accept it as gold. Similarly Kṛṣṇa is full of violence and if from the life of Kṛṣṇa you want to prove nonviolence. That means you have to make false propaganda. That is being done. --- **[1971: Visit to Museum](spoken/1971/711205r1.del)** > Dr. Candra: Yeah. [break] That's the *Bhāgavata Purāṇa*, and also a word index so that every word can be traced in the *Bhāgavata Purāṇa*. [break] And here is a [indistinct]. There was an international conference on the *Rāmāyaṇa* in Indonesia in September. So on that occasion everyone issued something as a souvenir, and this was the postcard issued by the Indonesian Airways, Garuda Indonesian Airways. > Here is Sītā and Rāvaṇa. He's carrying her away, and on the way Jaṭāyu comes to rescue her, and he is fatally wounded. So this is the depiction of that. And in the background, if you can follow, is Prambanan of the ninth century. This temple is 150 feet high, and around it there are 259 temples, about 40 feet high..., 45 feet high. --- **[1971: Room Conversation](spoken/1971/711205r3.del)** > Just like this Pakistan and Hindustan, fighting. *Icchā*. *Icchā* is that "I shall enjoy this land." So they're fighting. They do not know that after all, this land does not belong to any one of us; it belongs to Kṛṣṇa. Why should we fight? Better you... Let us be satisfied with whatever Kṛṣṇa has given. But there is no Kṛṣṇa consciousness; therefore they are fighting. Otherwise, Kṛṣṇa has made everything complete. > This planet is complete because it is created by Kṛṣṇa. So there cannot be any scarcity, any want. Everything is there. But we are desiring. Such simple *dveṣa-samutthena. Dveṣa*. We want to enjoy more, therefore I envy you. This is our [indistinct]. This is called material [indistinct]. --- **[1972: Rotary Club Lecture "Sanātana-dharma" Bhagavad-gītā 2.24](spoken/1972/721205le.ahm)** > So this knowledge is obtained, as it is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā, bahūnāṁ janmanām ante:*after struggling many, many, birth after birth. *Bahūnām. Bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān:* "One who is actually in knowledge, one who is wise," *māṁ prapadyate,* "he surrenders unto Me." *Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ*. When he understands, "Oh, Vāsudeva, Kṛṣṇa, is everything..." That *mahātmā* is very rare. So if you get perfect knowledge, if you surrender to God, then you'll be happy. Otherwise, there is no possibility. You go on struggling. > Therefore Kṛṣṇa is describing... First of all, He said that there is soul within this body. *Dehino 'smin yathā dehaṁ dehī, deha. Dehino 'smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanam...*.* Because the soul is there, therefore we are changing different types of body. Just like because you are living, therefore there is coat and shirt. But if you are not living, what is the use of this coat and shirt? There is no question of coat and shirt. Similarly, because the soul is there, therefore the body has developed, according to the desire of the soul. But it is very, very minute. --- **[1973: Morning Walk](spoken/1973/731205mw.la)** > That is this imitation. They want to imitate their father. So if he imitates the razor sharp, then he will create havoc. So these rascals, they have got now all power, and therefore creating havoc. They do not know how to use it. According to Vedic principle, the *śūdras,* they should not be given more money, the worker class. Now the worker class is given more money. So what they'll do? They'll produce drunkards. That's all. In America, it is evident. They do not know how to use money. So therefore we see, fifty-two percent drunkards in your country. Eh? What is the percentage? > Caitanya Mahāprabhu is God Himself. He comes down to preach, to become *sannyāsī,* and to take so much trouble all over India and everywhere, and giving instruction and sending men, "Go, go, go, go." What? Why you...? He's perfect. Why He's coming? He doesn't require. No. For the benefit of others, we must follow the footsteps of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.15.27](spoken/1973/731205sb.la)** > Here... They are searching after what is God, but here is God. Here is God. Therefore in the *śāstra* it is forbidden, *arcā..., arcye viṣṇau śilā-dhīr guruṣu nara-matir vaiṣṇave jāti-buddhiḥ* [*Padma Purāṇa*]. It is forbidden, that when you worship Deity, you should not think that it is made of wood or stone or something else material. No. What is this material? Material is... Matter means the energy of Kṛṣṇa. Just like the sunshine, or like the illumination of this light: it is the energy of the lamp. So it is not different. Similarly, as Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ*, this earth, water, air, fire, anything material, that is expansion of His energy. > So Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura says that *viṣaya viṣānale, divā-niśi hiyā jvale:* "The heart is burning on account of this material existence." *Tori bare nā kainu upāya* [*Prārthanā,* song 4]: "But I did not try to find out the means by which I can get out of this." *Golokera prema-dhana, hari-nāma-saṅkīrtana, rati nā janmila kena tāya.* The medicine is this Hari, Kṛṣṇa: Kṛṣṇa's teachings, Kṛṣṇa's name, Kṛṣṇa's glorification. That is the real medicine. But we have no attraction for these things. We are simply trying to counteract the suffering, and we are accepting this counteraction as enjoying. *Bhagavad-gītā. Haranti smarataś cittam*. --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.25.36](spoken/1974/741205sb.bom)** > These are the gradual steps. *Śraddhā. Śraddhā* means faith. Faith is the beginning. Without faith, you cannot make..., there is no question of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Faith means that faith is created after reading *Bhagavad-gītā.* If you read *Bhagavad-gītā* carefully and if you actually understand *Bhagavad-gītā* as it is, then the faith will be created. Without reading *Bhagavad-gītā,* there is no question of faith in Kṛṣṇa. So what is that faith? That Kṛṣṇa says that *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*, so, "You give up all other engagements. You just surrender to Me, and I shall give you protection." So if we have got faith, if we believe in the words of Kṛṣṇa, that is called faith. If we don't believe in the words of Kṛṣṇa, if we study as a literary thesis and then throw it away, that is not faith. > Mattaḥ, *when He says He's a person... So Kṛṣṇa says that "There is no more better personality or better superior existence than Myself." *Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru*. He says "Me." *Mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te*. Ahaṁ sarvasya... Aham,* "Me," "I." He says everywhere. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa is person. Kṛṣṇa is not imperson. *Kleśaḥ adhikataras teṣām avyaktāsakta-cetasām*. It is said that "One who is impersonalist, he takes more trouble to come to Me. He will come later on, but it will take some time." --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.6.4](spoken/1975/751205sb.vrn)** > > yata āyur-vyayaḥ param > na tathā vindate kṣemaṁ > mukunda-caraṇāmbujam* > * [break]* [00:58] "Therefore, only for the purpose of sense gratification, material activities like economic development are simply a waste of time and energy without any practical profit. If such energy and endeavor is utilized for Kṛṣṇa consciousness, surely one can attain to the spiritual platform of self-realization. There is no benefit by engaging oneself in economic development." > So there is no use. This is *śāstric* injunction. You have to see your future through the *śāstra.* So don't waste your time in that way. *Āyur-vyayam param. Ayur-vyayaḥ.* This duration of life, human life—Prahlāda Mahārāja has begun with the words *durlabhaṁ mānuṣaṁ janma—*this life is very, very important, and after many, many births you have got it. So you should always remember that every moment of this life is so important. How much it is important, that is explained by Cāṇakya Paṇḍita. Anyone can understand. He says... He is not a, I mean, Kṛṣṇa conscious person but moralist. He was prime minister. He says, *āyuṣaḥ kṣaṇa eko 'pi na labhyaḥ svarṇa-koṭibhiḥ.* [Cāṇakya *śloka* 34] Your duration of life... You have got a certain years' duration of life. You cannot live more than that. If you have got your duration of life for fifty years, you can live up to fifty years, not hundred years. These are all destined. It is useless. So therefore it is very important. In the *Bhāgavata* in another place it is said, *tūrṇaṁ yateta anumṛtya pateta yāvat nihśreyasāya.* The same thing repeatedly. Here Prahlāda Mahārāja also says that *durlabhaṁ mānuṣaṁ janma tad apy adhruvam arthadam.* First of all you have to consider that we have got this human form of life after many, many hundreds and thousands, millions, 8,400,000... [break] *Durlabham.* So therefore it is, although temporary... Everyone knows that "I'll not live forever." But even though it is temporary, *adhruvam,* not eternal, it is *arthadam.* It is said, *arthadam.* Whatever little life you have got, you can attain perfection. This is the advantage. You can attain perfection. How perfection? Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā,* --- **[1976: Morning Walk [Partially Recorded](spoken/1976/761205mw.hyd)** > This is also *mānava-sevā.* We are giving this knowledge to the human society. Is it not *sevā?* They are remaining in darkness of their position, and we are giving them this knowledge. This is not *sevā? --- **[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/761205r1.hyd)** > If you want to become a *brāhmaṇa,* then *śamo damas titikṣā ārjavam, jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam*. If you want to be *kṣatriya, tejaḥ...* What is that? *Tejaḥ śauryaṁ yujyaṁ yuddhe cāpy apalāyanam īśvara-bhāvaś ca kṣātraṁ karma svabhāva-jam.* If you want to be a *vaiśya, kṛṣi-go-rakṣya-vāṇijyaṁ vaiśya-karma svabhāva-jam*. And if you want to remain a *śūdra, paricaryātmakaṁ kāryaṁ śūdra-karma svabhāva-jam.* And that is prescribed duty. You classify yourself—either as a *brāhmaṇa* or as a *kṣatriya* or a *vaiśya—*by quality, not by caste or by whims, no. Actually by qualification. Then you engage yourself in that duty. That is *niyataṁ karma tvam.* Otherwise, jumping like monkeys, that is not *karma.* That is monkey's dance. It has no value. Wasting time. You should not waste time a single moment. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *niyataṁ kuru karma tvam.* So make that. Don't waste your time. > So this is magic. Why don't you see Kṛṣṇa's magic? Why you are so much allured by a teeny magician? That is your misfortune. Poor heart, poor magic. See the real magic. If you want to see magic, see the Kṛṣṇa's magic. Kṛṣṇa, when He was three months old, the Pūtanā came to kill the child by poisoning, but she was killed. So in this way, from the very beginning of Kṛṣṇa's appearance, He's killing so many demons. So why don't you see this magic? If you want to see magic, see Kṛṣṇa's magic. Why the poor magic? Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-loka-maheśvaram* : "I am the proprietor of all the *lokas*." --- ## Letters on December 5 *Letters from this day: 17* --- **[1968: Letter to Aniruddha](letters/1968/681205_aniruddha)** > Now it is understood that you are taking charge of Girish and I think that you may teach him very nicely the principles of Bhagavad-gita As It Is.
