# November 14 ## Spoken on November 14 *Lectures from this day: 15 recordings* --- **[1966: Govardhana Pūjā Lecture](spoken/1966/661114gp.ny.md)** > What is that? He says, *karmāṇa jāyate jantuḥ karmaṇaiva pralīyate* : "Everyone is born here out of..., as the effect of his past deeds," and *karmaṇaiva pralīyate,* "and he is going to have his next birth according to the work as he is doing here." This is called *karma-mimāṁsā.* The *karma-mimāṁsā* philosophers, they do not believe that "Oh, our liberation from this material world and entrance in the spiritual kingdom to be associated with God, that will make us happy." Their belief is that "You simply do good work. Then you gradually get your promotion." > So here Kṛṣṇa says that "People are concerned with his work. A man is concerned with his work." *Karmaṇā jāyate jantuḥ karmaṇaiva pralīyate:* "He gets his facilities of life according to the past good work, bad work, and he is preparing his life, next, by that work." *Sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ bhayaṁ kṣemaṁ karmaṇaivābhipadyate:* "So therefore, either happiness or distress or fearfulness or poverty or economic question, everything depends on this *karma,* on this work." --- **[1968: Lecture on Twenty-four Elements [Partially Recorded](spoken/1968/681114le.la)** > Then their objectives. In this way, the creation is going on. But it requires so much time to create such huge cosmic manifestation, but God is so perfect, as soon as He desires, He says, "Let there be creation," immediately the creation. That is God. > So this whole creation, whatever material creation we have got, they are made of these twenty-four el... Just like colors. Varieties of color means three color: yellow, red and blue. Those who are expert in color mixing, they'll mix these three colors into eighty-one colors. Three into three equals nine; nine into nine equals eighty-one. So expert colorists, they can display these three colors into eighty-one. --- **[1971: Paṇḍāl Lecture](spoken/1971/711114le.del)** > Now,trytounderstand, thesame thing whichwas considered beforeas impious, how it becamepious?BecauseKṛṣṇacertifiedArjuna,*bhakto'si me*, *priyo'sime:*"YouareMyverynicedevoteeandverydeardevotee."SoapersonwhoisverydearasdevoteeofKṛṣṇa,isheimpious?No.Heisnot impious.Hecannotbeimpious.Thereforethispiousor vicious activities, theycanbe considered in termsofourrelationshipwithKṛṣṇa.WhatKṛṣṇa says, thatispious, whatKṛṣṇadoesnotsay, whatKṛṣṇaforbids, that isimpious, notinourstandard. > OnewhoisactuallyKṛṣṇaconscious, hedoes not makeanydistinction that heisAmericanorIndianorhumanbeingoranimal.Adevoteewillneveragreetokillananimal, notevenanant.Thatis, *yasyāsti bhaktir bhagavaty akiñcanā*.Factually, ifyoubecomeKṛṣṇaconscious, ifyourfaithandloveforKṛṣṇaisunflinching, then youwillbeequallydisposed, *samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu*.Simplybypassingresolutionyou cannot establishuniversalbrotherhood,unlessyoucometoKṛṣṇaconsciousness.Thatisthefirstprinciple. *Brahma-bhūta:* youhavetoget release from this material concept of life; you haveto come tothe platform of transcendental realization. --- **[1972: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1972/721114nd.vrn)** > Varṇa* and *āśrama,* four *varṇas* and four *āśrama,* that division is always there. But it does not matter, division. It... Of course, comparatively, the head is important than the leg. But if everyone is engaged in the service of the Lord, then everyone becomes perfect. It doesn't matter whether he's *śūdra* or *brāhmaṇa.* It doesn't matter. *Sva-karmaṇā tam abhyarcya*.* Or *svanuṣṭhitasya dharmasya saṁsiddhir hari-toṣaṇam*. That is the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. > He recommended this, that *tasmād bhārata sarvātmā bhagavān harir īśvaraḥ. Sarvātmā.* The Kṛṣṇa is situated in everyone's heart; therefore He's known as *sarvātmā.* So *sarvātmā* is Bhagavān, the Personality, Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, who takes away all our miserable condition. Hari. And *īśvara,* controller. *Tasmād bhārata sarvātmā bhagavān harir īśvaraḥ.* So He's to be always remembered. *Satato smārtavyo viṣṇuḥ.* Always we have to remember Viṣṇu. *Nityada,* always. *Kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ* [*Cc Ādi* 17.31], Caitanya Mahāprabhu said. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.3.1](spoken/1972/721114sb.vrn)** > Therefore Kṛṣṇa says that *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*. That means the so-called faith, you should give up. It is a faith. "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Christian," or "I am this," "I am that," this is a kind of faith. You are neither Hindu, neither Muslim nor Christian; you are servant of Kṛṣṇa. That is real characteristic. > So ass politician, ass family man, ass community leader. So... All asses, *mūḍhāḥ. Na māṁ prapadyante mūḍhāḥ.* All asses. They'll not surrender to Kṛṣṇa to get relief. They'll work like ass. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *na māṁ prapadyante mūḍhāḥ duṣkṛtino narādhamāḥ*. They have no brain, *alpa-medhasaḥ.* No brain substance. Filled up with cow dung. And those who have got real brain, then, for them it is recommended: *saṅkīrtana-prāyaiḥ, yajñaiḥ saṅkīrtana-prāyair yajanti hi su-medhasaḥ.* --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.9–10](spoken/1973/731114sb.del)** > He is *sādhu* because he has accepted the principle, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekam*. Sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ samyag vyavasito hi saḥ*. You cannot say, "Oh, he has got some bad principle in his life. Although he is worshiping Kṛṣṇa wholeheartedly, but he has got some defect." Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *api cet su-durācāraḥ.* Even if he has got so many defects of his life, because he has dedicated his life for Kṛṣṇa's service, *sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ.* So if you have got *śraddhā* that by surrendering to Kṛṣṇa your all purpose of life will be practical or fruitful, then you have to associate with such persons who are engaged in the service of Kṛṣṇa, *sādhu-saṅga*. Ādau śraddhā tataḥ sādhu-saṅgaḥ.* > Therefore Śrī Sanātana Gosvāmī has advised how to save yourself from this rascaldom. He says, *avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ pūtaṁ hari-kathāmṛtam, śravaṇaṁ naiva kartavyam* [*Padma Purāṇa]*. *Pūtaṁ hari-kathāmṛtam. Hari-kathā.* Kṛṣṇa is speaking *Bhagavad-gītā;* therefore it is called *hari-kathā, kṛṣṇa-kathā.* So Sanātana Gosvāmī says, "If it is uttered by *avaiṣṇava—*who is not a devotee, he is a professional man, so-called scholar and politician—don't hear it. Don't hear it." *Avaiṣṇava:* "Because he is not a Vaiṣṇava." *Avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ pūtaṁ hari-kathā. Hari-kathā* means Kṛṣṇa's words. They are very purified. That's all right. But no, *śravaṇaṁ naiva kartavyam.* Why? Because *sarpocchiṣṭaṁ yathā payaḥ.* Just like milk. Milk is very good food, but if it is touched by the tongue of a serpent, it becomes poison. If you eat that kind of milk, your life will be finished. Similarly, our only request is that don't try to read *Bhagavad-gītā* commented by unauthorized so-called scholars or politicians. Simply read *Bhagavad-gītā* as it is. Simply accept what Kṛṣṇa says. Then you will be benefited. --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.25.14](spoken/1974/741114sb.bom)** > "You are My dear friend." Because, without being *bhakta,* nobody will understand *Bhagavad-gītā.* It is not possible. *Bhagavad-gītā* means to understand Kṛṣṇa. So although everything is explained there, but it is on the *bhakti* line, not in any other line. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says at the end, *bhaktyā mām abhijānāti*. If anyone wants to understand Kṛṣṇa and wants relationship with Kṛṣṇa, then one must take to this process of *bhakti-yoga.* That is *sāṅkhya-yoga.* That will be explained by Kapiladeva. *Bhakti-yoga* means *sāṅkhya-yoga.* > Therefore the perfect *yoga* system... *Svalpam apy asya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt*. So He'll speak that. *Tam imaṁ te pravakṣyāmi.* So it is not newly manufactured. We don't concoct anything. That is not our business. Our business is very simple. Our business is very simple because we take the words of Kṛṣṇa as it is. That's all. Kṛṣṇa says, *satataṁ kīrtayanto māṁ yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ*. --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/751114mw.bom)** > [Transl. *If you have too much sense enjoyment and opulence then you will not have attraction for the Supreme Lord. Therefore renunciation is required.]Voluntarily sannyāsa. All big, big kings in India, voluntarily: "Eh! Give it! Kick it out!" Mahārāja Bharata, at the age of twenty-four years, he left everything-young wife, children, kingdom, whole world-gave it up. This is Indian culture, vairāgya. Yudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja *[Transl. *engaged in fighting and ruling but] *as soon as the grandson, Mahārāja Parīkṣit, was major: "Take it. We are going." That is the required.* [Transl. *Until one is shot dead he will not renounce.] Even Mahatma [Gandhi]. He declared himself mahātmā. He is such a mahātmā that unless he was killed by goli [bullet[, he was not leaving anything. He was not prepared. This is mahātmā, Kali-yūga kā mahātmā: [mahātmā of kali-yuga]. Mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ, bhajanty ananya-manaso. > Then why shall I assert that "There is no living... I cannot see"? Is that very good proposal? Therefore they are rascals. There cannot be any place within this universe which is without life. There cannot be. We see there is life even within sand. How you can say there is no life? "Because I cannot see." What is this argument? What you are? You are a rascal. Because you cannot see, therefore we have to accept? First of all we say you are a rascal. And if he says that "I cannot see," has it to be accepted? And the example is there. "I cannot see any life. It is simply water." But there are millions and trillions of life, big, big fish. Where is your perfection of seeing? --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.1](spoken/1975/751114sb.bom)** > Therefore the natural tendency for the human beings is to earn some money, save it and then enjoy it peacefully. However, this is not possible for a dog's body, an ass's body or a hog's body. For them, so long they will live they must work hard whole day just to maintain their bodies. Therefore it is forbidden here that *ayaṁ deha*, this particular body, the human body. Just to maintain this body by working hard, that is for the dogs and hogs and not for the human beings. This is the instruction. It is not good for the human beings just to fulfil the demands of the body by working so hard. Then what should they do? The Lord says here *tapo divyaṁ*. > Mukti* means... This our present perverted form which is not *sat-cit-ānanda vigrahaḥ*, which is perishable, temporary, and full of ignorance and distress, when we give up this kind of form and receive a *sat-cit-ānanda* form, that is called *mukti*: liberation. *Muktir hitvānyathā rūpaṁ*. Now our form is perverted. Therefore we have to execute austerity. That is human life. *Tapo divyam putrakā yena sattvaṁ śuddhyed*. We need to purify our existence. The Supreme Lord says *janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi-duḥkha-doṣānudarśanam.* What is your actual misery? The actual miseries are we have to take birth again and again, die again and again, and on account of accepting a material body we have to grow old, and suffer from diseases. Threefold material miseries: *ādhyātmika*, *ādhibhautika* and *ādhidaivika*: miseries caused by one's body and mind, miseries caused by other living entities and miseries caused by natural calamities. Because we have forshaken the principle of *varṇāśrama-dharma*, we don't understand our real problems of life. We are simply busy in mitigating our immediate distresses. That an animal also does. Immediate relief. If it is hungry it will look for food. A hog will search for stool and a man will look for a restaurant or hotel. The business is the same. Work very hard just for eating? The *śāstra* says that your food is already supplied. So there is no need to work hard for that. --- **[1976: Lecture in Hindi](spoken/1976/761114le.vrn)** > You do as you like for now but after death it is in material nature's hand. That's all. *Tathā dehāntara prāptir*, there must be change of body. For this subject matter there is no university education. What type of body am I going to get? Will that be of a hog or a demigod, or a tree, or a fly? No such consideration. *andhā yathāndhair upanīyamānās te 'pīśa-tantryām uru-dāmni baddhāḥ* He is bound up by the nature's law still he doesn't think and the leaders misguide him. *andhā yathāndhair upanīyamānās.* This is going all over the world. In our country this knowledge is available. The Supreme Lord personally comes and instructs, *Vedic* literatures are there, *Vedas*, *purāṇas* and other scriptures are there, big, big sages, great souls, big, big *ācaryas* come and preach. If we give up these things and simply work hard, there is no other way than to work hard. This is not good. Even a hog, an ass also works hard. Is that our aim of life? You all are cultured people so our request to you is that this civilization-work hard whole day, you have to labor hard, *tapasya* is a very hard labor and not ordinary. But you labor hard for something concrete so that you will actually gain. Therefore *śāstra* says *tapo divyam putrakā yena suddheta sattvā.* Work hard, undergo *tapasya*, but for what? To achieve something transcendental. Not for eating and enjoying sense gratification like hogs. No. Not that kind of labor. *Tapo divyam putrakā yena suddheta sattvā.* We read *Bhagavad-gītā*, but the Supreme Lord says *na jāyate na mriyate vā kadācit.* > We are also fools. But if we accept that what Kṛṣṇa says is all right then it is good. There is no need to work hard. No need to become too learned. That much...[aside: Don't talk. When I was trying to register this Kṛṣṇa Consciousness movement in New York, at that time the lawer Mr. Goldsmith and his friends suggested to me that you change "Kṛṣṇa Consciousness into God consciousness." But I refused, saying that if I make it "God consciousness" then foolish people would bring so many Gods. But God is Kṛṣṇa. *Kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam*. This is the conclusion of the *śāstra*. --- **[1976: Room Conversation [Partially Recorded](spoken/1976/761114r1.vrn)** > Tejiyas*:* He had given us nice questioning, and some from our Members, who are members of Parliament and other persons like M. This is Caitanya Mahāprabhu's clear instruction. Whether one is a *sannyāsī*, or a *brāhmaṇa*, or a *śūdra*, or a *gṛhastha* or anything it does not make any difference. *yei kṛṣṇa-tattva-vettā, sei guru haya.* One who knows the truth of Kṛṣṇa, the science of Kṛṣṇa, he is a *guru*. There is no difficulty in understanding the science of Kṛṣṇa. In the *Bhagavad-gītā* the Supreme Personality of Godhead has revealed about Himself and Arjuna has heard everything. The Supreme Lord has given him the certificate also, *bhakto'si priyo'si me*. So if we follow him, not imitate him but follow him that how Arjuna was able to secure a certificate from Him.* [Transl. *Bhakto'si priyo'si,* how we will become dear to the Supreme Lord and how we will receive an opportunity to become devotee. One has to know this science. We don't know the science. And that science is present here—*Bhagavad-gītā.* We neither study it nor behave accordingly. Therefore there is difficulty, otherwise to become a devotee or to make a connection with the Supreme Lord it does not depend on becoming a *sannyāsī*, *gṛhastha* or *śūdra*. > [Transl. He will attain supreme destination. Actually we have rejected it. The Supreme Lord has personally come to teach us, but we don't accept His teachings. That is why we are puzzled. You accept the teachings of *Bhagavad-gītā* and follow them properly. There is no discrimination whether one is a *brāhmaṇa*, *kṣatriya*, *vaiśya*, *śūdra*, *gṛhastha*, *vānaprastha*. No discrimination. You must know the science. Even now if someone is a doctor or an engineer nobody bothers to ask him what caste he belongs to. If he is an engineer he is an engineer.* [Transl. In the same way, you simply understand the science of Kṛṣṇa it doesn't matter you remain a *gṛhastha* or a *sannyāsī*, it is all right. We neglect that science. We make that mistake. Two plus two equals to four, that we don't accept. Two plus two equals to three some say, and some say it is five. This is rascaldom. Therefore we are failure. Two plus two equals four. If you take instruction of *Bhagavad-gītā*, and if you apply in your life, then you're perfect. Never mind whether you are *gṛhastha* or *sannyāsa*. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.27](spoken/1976/761114sb.vrn)** > But the difficulty is that we cannot come to the pure stage of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra.* Due to our past habits our mind is disturbed. We cannot concentrate. Therefore we have fixed up the minimum. We cannot imitate Haridāsa Ṭhākura. That is not possible. If somebody imitates Haridāsa Ṭhākura... We can see this chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa and smoking *bīḍī.* We can understand what is the position. The offense is going on. Therefore we should try to avoid the ten kinds of offenses. Of course, in the beginning the offenses will continue. But chanting, chanting, chanting, chanting, as soon as we become purified... *Ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇam*. By chanting, chanting, chanting repeatedly, when our the core of heart will be cleansed, *ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam,* then immediately *bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇam,* this *mahā-vimoha...* This is *mahā...* This is *bhava-mahā-dāvāgni.* They do not know that what kind of position we are now passing through. Kṛṣṇa says the same thing: *mṛtyu saṁsāra vartmani. Mām aprāpya nivartante mṛtyu saṁsāra vartmani*. > Therefore one who sticks to this body only, gross body, atheist class... Just like in our country the Cārvāka, he says, *bhasmī-bhūtasya dehasya kutaḥ punar-āgamano bhavet:* "Why you are thinking of next birth? It is not possible. We see this gross body is burnt into ashes. And where is the soul? Who is coming back again? Don't care for all these things. Live happily. Eat, drink, be merry and enjoy." *Yāvaj jīvet sukhaṁ jīvet.* This philosophy is going on: "There is no mind, there is no intelligence, there is no soul, only this gross body, and so long we possess this gross body, let us enjoy the senses." But this is called, it is described, *mahā-vimoha.* This is the greatest bewilderment, *mahā-vimoha.* So because people have no education how we are existing in this material world, *vimohana, vimūḍha, prakṛti,* how nature is working... *Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ, ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā*. Vimūḍha. Mahā-vimoha.* This rascal is thinking that there is no other life. That is not the fact. It is very great entanglement. --- **[1977: Chanting on Night of Disappearance](spoken/1977/771114sp.vrn)** --- ## Letters on November 14 *Letters from this day: 23* --- **[1968: Letter to Aniruddha](letters/1968/681114_aniruddha)** > Whenever the Indian community invites you to go and take Prasadam, be always kind with them, and go there and chant Hare Krishna.
