In the *Bhagavad-gītā,* the Lord says that one should surrender unto Him, giving up all other engagements. The Lord also gives His word there that He will protect such surrendered souls from the reactions of all sinful activities. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī says that the distresses from sinful activities are due both to the sins themselves and to sins committed in our past lives." **Prabhupāda:** Hmm now, "Relief from Material Distress." There are two kinds of activities: pious activities and impious activities. Generally we understand by performing impious activities, we suffer, and by performing pious activities, we enjoy. But actually, in the material world there is no enjoyment. Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī explains that *dvaite bhadrābhadra sakali samāna* [[cc/antya/4/176|[Cc. Antya 4.176] ]]. In the material world, in the world of duality, either we think "This is pious" or either we think "This is impious," they are practically on the same platform. We take it as pleasure. Just like several times I have explained, people here in this material world, they are working very hard all day and night. And when they gain some material profit after working so hard, they think that "This is profit. This is happiness." Actually, where is the happiness? If one is working very hard, where is the happiness? --- **[[spoken/721104sb.vrn|SB 1.2.24 — November 4, 1972, Vṛndāvana]]** **Pradyumna:** *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* [leads chanting of verse, etc.] [**Prabhupāda and **devotees repeat] *pārthivāt*—from earth; *dāruṇaḥ*—firewood; *dhūmaḥ*—smoke; *tasmāt*—from that; *agniḥ*—fire; *trayī*—Vedic sacrifices; *mayaḥ*—made of; *tamasaḥ*—in the mode of ignorance; *tu*—but; *rajaḥ*—the mode of passion; *tasmāt*—from that; *sattvam*—the mode of goodness; *yat*—which; *brahma*—the Absolute Truth; *darśanam*—realization. --- **[[spoken/731104r1.del|Room Conversation — November 4, 1973, Delhi]]** **Prabhupāda:** He is Christian, she is Muhammadan, she is Buddhist. Secular government means government should give protection to the Hindu, to the Muslim, to the Christian, to the Buddhist. But it is the government's duty to see that no one is cheating.* [Prabhupāda and guests converse in Hindi] Government's duty to see that people may not become cheated. [Hindi] Let me speak in English, so that he can follow. **Prabhupāda:** Yes. No. [Hindi] Take for example a man is presenting himself as *brāhmaṇa,* but he's doing something else. That should be stopped. You are doing the business of a *śūdra*, why you are claiming as *brāhmaṇa*? This is government duty. --- **[[spoken/731104sb.del|SB 2.1.1 — November 4, 1973, Delhi]]** **Pradyumna:** *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* [leads chanting of verse, etc.][**Prabhupāda and **devotees repeat] **Translation:** "Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: My dear King, your question is glorious because it is very beneficial to all kinds of people. Only regulation given for timing is that for Deity going to rest at noon. The Deity should take rest at noon, two *yāmas* after sunrise, and take rest in evening, one *yāma* after sunset. But it didn't say anything about the other *āratis.* But at six hours... **Prabhupāda:** The *ārati,* it is called *sandhyā ārati. Sandhyā ārati* means just in the evening. So when evening time is there... After sunset it is not evening. What is the time of sunset nowadays? Bring *Pañjikā.* **Prabhupāda:** 5:30. 5:30. Instead of coming there at six, I come there 5:30. And one hour, then 6:30 begins. Make that like that. That will be very nice. So why you were not present in the meeting? --- **[[spoken/761104sb.vrn|SB 5.5.16 — November 4, 1976, Vṛndāvana]]** **Pradyumna:** *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. He is simply bound to material enjoyment by lusty desires, and all his plans are made for this purpose. For temporary sense gratification, such a person creates a society of envy, and due to this mentality, he plunges into the ocean of suffering. Such a foolish person does not even know about this." Then hopefully tomorrow we can finish it all. **Tamāla Kṛṣṇa:** You mean the treatment? Yes, I have learned to take everything very philosophically, Śrīla Prabhupāda. I take everything very philosophically. I mean I took it that you were presenting the..., you know, presenting the whole picture to be considered. **Tamāla Kṛṣṇa:** I thought it was very good what you said, in the sense that it... It actually makes everything... It presents a more real picture. We should not be overly optimistic, neither should we be completely fatalistic. --- ## Letters - [[../../letters/1967/671104_janaki.md|Letter to Janaki, 1967]] - [[../../letters/1967/671104_mukunda.md|Letter to Mukunda, 1967]] - [[../../letters/1969/691104_nico_kuyt.md|Letter to Nico Kuyt, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1969/691104_tamala_krsna.md|Letter to Tamala Krsna, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_bali-mardana.md|Letter to Bali-Mardana, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_gargamuni.md|Letter to Gargamuni, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_jadurani.md|Letter to Jadurani, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_jagadisa.md|Letter to Jagadisa, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_karandhara.md|Letter to Karandhara, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_rupanuga.md|Letter to Rupanuga, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_satsvarupa.md|Letter to Satsvarupa, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/701104_sudama.md|Letter to Sudama, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1971/711104_a._s._khanna.md|Letter to A.
