# November 1 *Lectures from this day: 14 recordings* --- **[[spoken/721101nd.vrn|The Nectar of Devotion — November 1, 1972, Vṛndāvana]]** **Pradyumna:** [reading:] "...as given by Rūpa Gosvāmī in *Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu,* can be summarized thus: his service is favorable and is always in relation to Kṛṣṇa. In order to keep the purity of such Kṛṣṇa conscious activities, one must be freed from all material desires and philosophical speculation. Any desire except for the service of the Lord is called material desire. "And philosophical speculation refers to the sort of speculation which ultimately arrives at a conclusion of voidism or impersonalism. This conclusion is useless for a Kṛṣṇa conscious person. Only rarely by philosophical speculation can one reach the conclusion of worshiping Vāsudeva, Kṛṣṇa. This is confirmed in the *Bhagavad-gītā* itself. "The ultimate end of philosophical speculation, then, must be Kṛṣṇa, with the understanding that Kṛṣṇa is everything, the cause of all causes, and that one should therefore surrender unto Him. If this ultimate goal is reached, then philosophical advancement is favorable, but if the conclusion of philosophical speculation is voidism or impersonalism, that is not *bhakti.*" --- **[[spoken/721101r1.vrn|Room Conversation — November 1, 1972, Vṛndāvana]]** **Acyutānanda:** Gauracandra Gosvāmī is telling Prabhupāda that ah, that it started raining just so that the *kīrtana* would happen in front of Dāmodara and then it stopped raining so that we could go back into the *samādhi* grounds. But still we have accepted it. This is [indistinct]. Things are not wanted—this body, material body, it was not necessary. We have got our spiritual body. Just like in India, the tropical climate, we do not require any heavy clothing. But still sometimes you find to become a gentleman they load with heavy clothing, unnecessarily. [laughs] It is simply a habit. Otherwise, in India plain cloth is sufficient. Most of the..., most part of the year in the villages, they remain naked body. There is no need of any heavy clothing. But sometimes, to keep up the modern civilization, we dress heavily with coats, pants and necktie and..., just see them covered. So unwanted. Similarly, we have got our spiritual body. This material body is unwanted. There is no need. So our Vedic civilization is to minimize the necessities, artificial necessities of the body. Therefore a mendicant, a *sādhu,* lies down on the floor; a *brahmacārī* lies down on the floor. Simple, for society's sake, a loincloth. Bare necessities. *Sannyāsī* means the bare necessities. *Brahmacārī* means bare necessities. Only the *gṛhastha*, because they have to keep up the pace with the society, they require little gorgeous dress. So minimum necessities. Reduce. Just like Śukadeva Gosvāmī says, for persons who are desiring to advance in spiritual life, he says that "When there is by nature bedding, nice grass, just lie down. Why you are after cot and mattress?" --- **[[spoken/731101r1.del|Room Conversation — November 1, 1973, Delhi]]** **Prabhupāda:** *vyasanāgatyā duḥkhānusandhānena.* [Śrīdhara Svāmī's commentary to SB 5.5.10] There is misery. Even you go to the moon planet... This is *Bhāgavata.* Before going to your moon planet, here is the information: "Anywhere you go, rascal, these things will follow, *janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi* [[bg/13/9|[Bg. 13.9] ]], and inconveniences you'll have suffer." So one is..., one who is intelligent, then, "Where shall I find real happiness?" That is Kṛṣṇa. Therefore one requires to be very, very intelligent to become Kṛṣṇa conscious. *Sarva, sarvatra* *vyasanāgatyā*. [[sb/5/5/10|[SB. 5.5.10] ]] The Śrīdhara Svāmī gives note, *sarvatra lokāntare 'pi.* Even if you go to other planet... Now these rascals are going now... Trying, not going. And in the *Bhāgavata* says, *lokāntare 'pi.* Even in other planets. They were going in other planets. That means they were going in other planets; otherwise how it is stated, *lokāntare,* "in other planets also"? From the statement it appears that people used to go. And here, Arjuna went to heavenly planet. And there the [break] ...heavenly prostitute came to Arjuna. She's prostitute. So when Arjuna refused, that... His father is Indra. --- **[[spoken/731101r2.del|Room Conversation about Rādhā-Dāmodara Property — November 1, 1973, Delhi]]** **Prabhupāda:** ...then our, this Deity worship is not regulated. Better you revitalize it. It is not that hard. Just see, just like a few days you remain at our temple to see our *kīrtana*, our *ārati*, nobody [indistinct]. [break] ...our Deity worship, *kīrtana* and the whole [indistinct], then people will come. Gradually the people will come. [break] --- **[[spoken/741101sb.bom|SB 3.25.1 — November 1, 1974, Bombay]]** **Prabhupāda:** > kapilas tattva-saṅkhyātā > bhagavān ātma-māyayā > jātaḥ svayam ajaḥ sākṣād > ātma-prajñaptaye nṛṇām > [[sb/3/25/1|[SB. 3.25.1] ]] So we are reciting from our latest edition of *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.* This is Third Canto, Part Four. We have finished Third Canto, publishing. This is very important subject matter. The Kapila, the expounder of Sāṅkhya philosophy, he instructed to His mother, Devahūti. There are two Kapilas. Real Kapiladeva is Kapila. He expounded Sāṅkhya philosophy to instruct His mother. But later on, some imitation Kapiladeva also appeared—atheistic Sāṅkhya philosophy. He has simply dealt with the twenty-four different elements without information of God. Therefore there are two Kapilas. One Kapila is called the Devahūti-putra Kapila; another is atheist Kapila. So about Kapiladeva it is said, Śaunaka Ṛṣ..., that *kapilas tattva-saṅkhyātā:* "Kapila, the Supreme Person," *tattva-saṅkhyātā,* "He can explain what is Absolute Truth." *Kapilas tattva-saṅkhyātā bhagavān.* Without Bhagavān, nobody knows what is the actual position of the Ultimate Truth. Nobody can know it. Therefore Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa or His incarnation occasionally visit to give you information about what is the aim of life. *Tattva-saṅkhyātā. Saṅkhyātā* means expounder, and *tattva* means the Absolute Truth. So Absolute Truth is Bhagavān Himself, Kṛṣṇa Himself. So we cannot understand the Absolute Truth or the Supreme Person by mental speculation. That is not possible, especially when we are under the influence of the three modes of material nature. Because material nature is divided into three status: *sattva-guṇa, rajo-guṇa* and *tamo-guṇa.* Those who are in the *sattva-guṇa,* they are fit for understanding the Absolute Truth. *Sattva-guṇa* means the brahminical qualification: *satya śamo damas titikṣā ārjavam, jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam* [[bg/18/42|[Bg. 18.42] ]]. --- **[[spoken/751101bg.nai|Bg 7.5 — November 1, 1975, Nairobi]]** **Harikeśa:Translation:** "Besides this inferior nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is a superior energy of Mine, which are all living entities who are struggling with material nature and are sustaining the universe." **Prabhupāda:** > apareyam itas tv anyāṁ > prakṛtiṁ viddhi me parām > jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho > yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat > [[bg/7/5|[Bg. 7.5] ]] So the *bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva ca* [[bg/7/4|[Bg. 7.4] ]], earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and ego—these are all material energies. It has nothing to do with the spiritual energy. And because it is not spiritual energy, it is called *aparā,* inferior. Just like in our body there are some superior part and some inferior part. We have got the brain, that is superior part. But there are other parts, where we pass stool and urine. Everything is part of my body, but the position is different, superior and inferior. Similarly, everything is God—*sarvaṁ khalv idaṁ brahma* [*Chāndogya Upaniṣad* 3.14.1], but still, there must be distinction between the superior and the inferior. Although it is Brahman, still, for practical use there is superior and inferior distinction. Those who do not make this distinction, foolishly, they are called *nirviśeṣavādī,* impersonalist, without any varieties. But there are varieties actually. Although the body is one, there is no doubt about it, but different parts of the body are considered as superior and inferior. This is called *acintya-bhedābheda* philosophy: --- **[[spoken/751101mw.nai|Morning Walk — November 1, 1975, Nairobi]]** **Prabhupāda:** No, whatever it may be. Try to realize the miserable condition of living entities, who are miserable even in the higher planetary systems. Philosophically inquire about the truth. Then undergo all kinds of austerities and penances for the sake of devotional service. Give up the endeavor for sense enjoyment and engage in the service of the Lord. Listen to discussions about the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and always associate with devotees. Chant about and glorify the Supreme Lord, and look upon everyone equally on the spiritual platform. Give up enmity and subdue anger and lamentation. Abandon identifying the self with the body and the home, and practice reading the revealed scriptures. Live in a secluded place and practice the process by which you can completely control your life air, mind and senses.
