**[1972: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1972/721029nd.vrn)**
> Therefore this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is awakening that spiritual energy of the living entity. *Mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ*. The *mahātmā* and *durātmā,* what is the difference? The difference is the *durātmā* is under the influence of external energy. *Bahir-artha-māninaḥ. Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇuṁ durāśayā ye bahir-artha-māninaḥ*. When we are too much engrossed with the concept of bodily life—"I am this body," "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am *brāhmaṇa,*" "I am *kṣatriya*"*—*when we are influenced by the bodily concept of life, that is called material energy. And when we are influenced by the spiritual energy, we always think that "I am servant of the servant of the servant of Kṛṣṇa." *Gopī-bhartuḥ pada-kamalayoḥ dāsa-dāsānudāsaḥ*.
> Nāhaṁ vipro na ca nara-patir* [*Padyāvalī 63]:* "I am neither *brāhmaṇa* or *kṣatriya* or *vaiśya* and *śūdra* or *sannyāsī* or *brahmacārī."* This, this is a verse given by Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He denies any material designation, and He informs us also that *jīvera svarūpa haya nitya kṛṣṇa dāsa*. When we feel actually that "I am eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa," that is our liberation. *Hitvā anyathā rūpaṁ svarūpeṇa vyavasthitiḥ*. This is *svarūpa.* When you are existing as servant of Kṛṣṇa, then you are *mukta,* liberated. You haven't got to endeavor separately for becoming free or liberated.

**[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.18](spoken/1972/721029sb.vrn)**
> Such rascals have spoiled the whole country, you see. Everyone is so... Politicians, and this, that, all, they are..., "Oh, we are student of *Bhagavad-gītā.*" And what do you know about Kṛṣṇa? "Kṛṣṇa is zero." That's all. This is going on. So therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ*. So we have to hear. If we actually want to diminish our *anarthas,* then we must hear Kṛṣṇa as He's speaking, without any interpretation.
> Kṛṣṇa says therefore that *api cet su-durācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk.* If he sticks to the devotional service sincerely, but due to his past habit, if he's seen that he has committed something wrong, so Kṛṣṇa said, "Still, he's *sādhu.*" *Sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ, samyag vyavasito hi...*. Because his faith in Kṛṣṇa is there. Therefore he is *sādhu.*

**[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 7.1 Hindi](spoken/1973/731029bg.vrn)**
> To become engaged in the service of the Lord with determination is not an ordinary feat. *Yeṣāṁ tv anta-gataṁ pāpaṁesam tv anta gatam papam*, those who have become completely free from all sinful activities, for him it is possible to engage in the service of the Lord. On the other hand, we should understand that those who are engaged in the service of the Supreme Lord they are real followers of etiquette, they are the only one's following the etiquette. Even if upon external observation one appears to be not with etiquette, for the Lord says *api cet sudurācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk apicet suduracaro bhajate mam ananya bhak*.
> So, the Lord says *madāśraya*, which means one should take shelter of those who have taken the shelter of the Lord. By taking only hisonly His shelter should one try and execute devotional service. Similarly, the Lord *evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ* says *evam parampara praptam imam rajarsayo viduh*, devotional service, the holy name, the qualities of the Supreme Lord, his pastimes, his glories, to understand all foof these one should take to the disciplic succession. That is why in vaisnavavaiṣṇava school three are four *sampradayas—brahma sampradāya*. Rudra sampradaya, Kumāra samrpadaya and Śri sampradāya headed by goddess Laxmi. You all are followers of the Śrī sampradāya Sri sampradaya and those who are of Kumāra Kumara sampradāya they follow Nimbārkācārya. So, it has been said *sampradāya-vihīnā ye mantrās te niṣphalā matāḥsampradaya vihinas te matras te nisphalah matah*. Whichever of the four sampradāyas sampradayas one accepts one will be considered to have taken shelter of the Supreme Lord. Whichever of the four sampradāyas sampradayas one chooses he will learn only devotional service. They will teach only how can one increase one's attachment towards the Lord. They have no other business. That is why the Lord says *mayy āsakta-manāḥ mayyasakta manah*, if you wish to increase your attachment towards the Lord then we should make one's mind attached to the Lord *sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padāravindayor* sa vai manah krsna padaravindayoh, just like Ambarisa maharaja Maharaja did. Even though he was the emperor, emperor, he engaged his mind in constantly thinking about Him. In the same way we should at least try to imitate him, or better follow Him. The *ācāryays*, we can imitate *mahājano yena gataḥ sa panthāḥ* —if we follow the path as delineated by the mahājanas then we will certainly be delivered and Sukadeva Śukadeva Goswami has said *kirāta-hūṇāndhra-pulinda-pulkaśā ābhīra-śumbhā yavanāḥ khasādayaḥ hirat hunanda pulinda pulkasah abhira sambhah yavana khasadayah*, someone may be of *yavana or khasādaya khasada race,* even for them it has been said *ye 'nye ca pāpā māṁ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye 'pi syuḥ pāpa-yonayaḥ ye anye ca papa mam hi partha vyapasritya ye pi syuh paap yonayah*, there is nothing big about being a sinner. After all, the living beings are not sinful they are the parts and parcels of the Supreme Lord and therefore completely pure. However, due to being contaminated it becomes concerned with the principle of sin and piety.

**[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.49](spoken/1974/741029sb.may)**
> Therefore the conclusion is that you can be freed from the debts of *devarṣi-bhūtāpta-nṛṇāṁ pitṝṇāṁ nāyam ṛṇī na kiṅkaraḥ*. Who? *Sarvātmanā ye śaraṇaṁ śaraṇyaṁ gato mukundaṁ parihṛtya kartam.* One who has taken full shelter of Kṛṣṇa *sarvātmanā,* without any reservation, he's no more *ṛṇī.* He's no more. He's fully liquidated. How? Kṛṣṇa says,
> So we are indebted to the demigod. Just like water department, you have to pay tax. Or the light department, you have to pay tax. If you don't pay the bill of the electrical department, it will be cut off, will be discontinued. But we are not paying any bill to the sun-god. Just see. We are taking advantage of the sunshine, but what payment we are paying? Nothing. Therefore this *yajña* is recommended. *Saha-yajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā*, in the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is said. *Saha-yajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā.* You are born with the responsibility of performing *yajña.* If you perform *yajña* or if you perform sacrifice in the name of Sūrya, in the name of Candra, in the name of Indra, Vāyu, then they will be pleased and will give you regular sunshine, regular moonshine, regular rain. Then you'll be happy. Therefore in the *Vedas* this *deva-yajña* is recommended.

**[1975: Bhagavad-gītā 7.3](spoken/1975/751029bg.nai)**
> You are executing your occupational duties very nicely, honestly. That is all right. But after executing your duties very honestly and nicely, if you do not awaken your dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness, then *śrama eva hi kevalam.* You are simply wasting your time. Useless. When you understand Kṛṣṇa, then it is the highest perfection. *Saṁsiddhiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ*. So nobody is interested. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *manuṣyāṇāṁ sahasreṣu :* "Out of many millions of persons, one may be interested." Otherwise, all are in darkness.
> Therefore Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, bahūnāṁ janmanām ante* : So everything is explained there. We are preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness not with empty "After many, many births," *jñānavān,* "when one actually self-realized, in awareness, fully in knowledge, then he understands," *vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti,* "Vāsudeva is the supreme everything. I am simply part and parcel of Vāsudeva, eternal servant of Vāsudeva." *Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ.* That kind of perfect person, *mahātmā,* is very, very rare, to understand that "I am eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa. My only business is to serve Kṛṣṇa. That is my constitutional position. I am part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa." This finger is part and parcel of my body. His business is to serve the whole body. I ask the finger, "Come here"; immediately... This is the normal, healthy condition of the part and parcel. Just like leg is my part and parcel of the body. As soon as I ask leg, "Please take me there..." That is normal. And if the leg cannot take me there—I have to take some stick—that means this is an..., not normal. It is diseased condition. It has to be treated. Similarly, as soon as we find that we do not abide by the orders of Kṛṣṇa, we must know that you are in ignorance and in abnormal condition, madness. That is my duty. Kṛṣṇa does not require my help, and still He says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*. That is *my* good. If I surrender to Kṛṣṇa, then that is *my* benefit. Kṛṣṇa does not require my service. He is omnipotent. But we are so rascal, we think, "Why shall I surrender to Kṛṣṇa?" This is imperfection. So when you come to this point, that you abide by the order of Kṛṣṇa and surrender to Him, that is perfection. But they do not do that.

**[1975: Room Conversation](spoken/1975/751029r1.nai)**
> And *durāśayā,* bad hopes, or hopes against hope, they're trying to be happy, *bahir-artha*, by the external energy, material, most fallen ideas. All foolish theories, without any knowledge. Material, that's all. *Bahir artha,* external energy. Otherwise there is no cause of anxiety or distress. There is enough land. They can produce enough food and live peacefully. They are talking of peace, but they do not know how peace can be achieved. They are hankering after peace, but they do not know how to achieve peace. And that formula is given in the *Bhagavad-gītā:* Accept God as the proprietor; then there will be peace. Something stolen from the proprietor by some thieves, and when they sit down to take their shares, there will be fight. The property is stolen, and they are sharing. Now, one will say, "Oh, I have worked so hard. You are giving me so little share?" And others will say, "No, no, we have worked equally." Somebody, "No..." In this way there will be fight.

**[1975: Room Conversation](spoken/1975/751029r2.nai)**
> So our position is like that. We, being part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa, our natural tendency is to serve Kṛṣṇa. Natural tendency. It is not artificial. When you forget Kṛṣṇa, that is artificial. So our normal life means to love Kṛṣṇa, to serve Kṛṣṇa. That is our normal life. Without serving Kṛṣṇa our life is abnormal, madman's life. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says... When you forget Kṛṣṇa, He comes to preach the normal life. *Sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekam*. This is normal life. So Kṛṣṇa does not require your help. He can create many helpers. But for your good Kṛṣṇa comes, that "If you want normal, happy life, then surrender unto Me." This is the proposal. Therefore the whole *Bhagavad-gītā,* all Vedic knowledge, is there. We have forgotten our position. Our posit..., normal position, is to love and serve Kṛṣṇa. Therefore,
> Therefore the natural process is you pick up... A child even, he picks up some something, but he does not put anywhere—immediately in the mouth. Why he does not bring it in the ear? Why? The child immediately takes it. He does not know what is what. But the nature is that as soon as he captures something, even he does not know... Because his position is eating, he knows this much, sense gratification. Other senses are not yet developed. So the child, he knows taste with tongue and eats. That he knows. So immediately anything he captures, he brings to the mouth, naturally. He hasn't got to be educated.

**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.28.19](spoken/1975/751029sb.nai)**
> Sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padāravindayor vacāṁsi vaikuṇṭha-guṇānuvarṇane*. You engage your senses. So this is practice. First of all think of the Deity. First of all think of the lotus feet, then the knees, then the eyes, then the belly, then the chest. In this way, as you become practiced, then go further, advance. In this way, when you become fully practiced, then automatically, in whatever condition you are, you will be able to meditate upon Kṛṣṇa. That is the highest perfection of life. *Satataṁ kīrtayanto mām*. *Satataṁ cintayanto mām.* If you always think of Kṛṣṇa, always chant... Chanting is also meditation. As soon as you chant, you immediately remember Kṛṣṇa—His form, His name, His quality, His pastimes. So where is difficulty? The Gosvāmīs practiced it.
> So this is required. The foolish rascals, they say that "What is the necessity of this, that?" No. This is necessity. You must always remain dressed like a Vaiṣṇava. That is necessity. So *prekṣaṇīya:* "is very beautiful to see." Otherwise how they became impressed? Immediately they become so pious that they chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. The chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa is not so easy. So many people come here, but when there is chanting they do not chant, because it is not easy. *Yaj-jihvāgre nāma tubhyam.* In the *śāstra* it is said, *aho bata śva-pacato 'pi garīyān yaj-jihvāgre nāma tubhyam.* Anyone who is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, *jihvāgre,* with the tongue, even if he is born in a family of dog-eaters he is glorious. That is... He is glorious. *Yaj-jihvāgre nāma tubhyam.* So we give this chance. As soon as he chants Hare Kṛṣṇa, immediately he becomes glorious. Immediately become glorious. *Aho bata śva-pacato 'pi garīyān yaj-jihvāgre nā..., tepus tapas te*. That means in his previous life he has already performed many sacrifices. Therefore he has got this qualification of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. *Tepus tapas te jihuvuḥ sasnur āryā.* They are really *āryā*, Āryan, who is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. So we should practice ourself to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa always. *Kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ,* Caitanya Mahāprabhu recommended.

**[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.7](spoken/1976/761029sb.vrn)**
> Be businesslike. People say, "Talk businesslike. Why you are talking nonsense?" So Kṛṣṇa says, "Yes." For businessman there is one interest, real businessman: *vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana.* One who is actually interested in businesslike way to make some profit, *arthadam,* then there is only interest is how to become Kṛṣṇa conscious. Otherwise you will manufacture so many interests. *Bahu-śākhā hy anantāś buddhi avyavasāyinām.* One who is not actually businessman, he is a rascal, he creates so many branches of different interests. The only one interest is how to satisfy Kṛṣṇa. This is our only business. But forgetting this business, *gata-smṛtir vindati tatra tāpān:* whatever business we are doing, we are simply suffering. *Tāpān āsādya,* he is actually tasting miserable condition. Then how they are working? This is the conclusion of this verse, how they are being baffled in every stage, and how they are working so hard.
> There are, for the materialistic person, there are two varieties of self-interest. One is concentrated interest and other is expanded interest. Just like a child, if you give him some foodstuff, a cake, he will immediately eat, himself, and if he is little liberal, then his other friends also he will give. First of all, first is, he wants to eat, and then the other friend, "Oh, you are eating, give me something." "All right, you also take." So this is called extended interest, and the beginning is self-interest, *anna brahma*[?], "I shall..." Self-preservation is the first law of nature. So in our ordinary activities we find the same thing. Suppose a big political leader, in the beginning he is interested with his family, with his family members, but sometimes he takes to national interest for all members of the country or the society, community. And then there is fight between one community to another community, one family to another family, one nation to another nation, because that extended self-interest does not make the thing perfect. That extended self-interest must be up to Viṣṇu. Then it will be perfect. But that they do not know, because they have no idea that there is Viṣṇu, the Supreme Lord, or Kṛṣṇa. *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum*. They do not know. They think that "I have extended my self-interest to my country, to my family. I have become a big man." And people also give him honor. This we have practical experience. But that is extended self-interest. That is not actually philanthropy.

**[1977: Room Conversation](spoken/1977/771029r1.vrn)**
> Then we told him that... We asked him what kind of food does he like. So he told us, so that now we'll make arrangement. We gave him very good food this morning, and we will cook him *roṭis.* Bhakti-caru and another devotee are cooking. So they will cook him fresh vegetables as he likes, according to his taste. And Adri-dhāraṇa serves him personally. And then I said also, "While you're here, there's much time. We can take you to the different temples." Because this is the first time he's come to Vṛndāvana. I said, "Even in the afternoon you can go with Prabhupāda's car to Govardhana." He said, "First of all, before *darśana,* let us do the medicine." So he went with the car. He said, "I will drive the car. I can drive." We said, "We have a driver." He said, "If you don't have a driver, I will drive to get the medicine." So then they went into the city to get..., into Vṛndāvana to get the necessary medicines. He said very strongly, he said, "What I prescribe, no *vaidya* can talk over what I prescribe." He said, "If I prescribe something, it is correct. That I'm sure." But he is very devotional, very *pakka,* like a Marwari, just like a high-class Life Member. He sits very straight and he's... Now we will have to see. But the main point we stressed is that you will not have confidence in anyone else. So there's no point in..., that he should tell some other man that in his absence, "Do like this." Because supposing in his absence the medicine doesn't work right. Then the other *kavirāja* becomes the *kavirāja.* That we don't want. So I said, "You must see the reaction of the medicines, and you must... When Prabhupāda eats, you must sit there and watch and see what he's eating, see everything." And he said, "That I will do."
> We'll just get the sum and substance. He's offering his obeisances to Bhavānanda Mahārāja and the other devotees he met here. He says he's very anxious about your health and progress. He requests me to give him a report. He says as regards to starting of the dispensary and also organizing a health teaching center for educating the boys by the latest audio-visual methods, he said that you seemed to be very earnest about it. In fact, he says that you told him to start as soon as possible. He says but he wishes to explain some of his difficulties. So Dr. Sharma and Jagadīśa, the director of education, and... They've promised to go through the idea. But he didn't find that Dr. Sharma showed much inclination for this idea. The actual thing, Śrīla Prabhupāda, is that we want him to have a dispensary. We're not so much eager for his educational training. Naturally, Dr. Sharma was not so enthusiastic.
