# October 28 ## Spoken on October 28 *Lectures from this day: 10 recordings* --- **[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 8.14–15](spoken/1966/661028bg.ny.md)** > So impersonal feature does not give us that pleasure which we want, which is our demand. That pleasure is available in the spiritual planets. If you enter in any of the spiritual planets, then that spiritual happiness and exchange of pleasure you can attain. Therefore the Lord says, Kṛṣṇa, *ananya-cetāḥ satataṁ yo māṁ smarati nityaśaḥ:* "A person without any deviation..." *Ananya-cetāḥ.* Without any consideration of *jñāna, yoga,* or any other process, simply devotional process, simply surrendered process: "My Lord, I am Your eternal servant. Please give me Your service. Let me engage. Let me be engaged in Your service." This is called *ananya-cetāḥ.* > Ananya-cetāḥ satatam. Satatam* means always, twenty-four hours, cent per cent, without any deviation. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. If anyone is engaged in such Kṛṣṇa consciousness, twenty-four hours and cent per cent, then *yo māṁ smarati nityaśaḥ,* always remembering... Suppose if you are engaged in some work, naturally you'll be thinking of that particular work. When you go to your office and work, oh, you have to think always of the office business. That is quite natural. Similarly, if you engage yourself in the business of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, naturally you'll be always thinking of Kṛṣṇa. Therefore it is said, *yo māṁ smarati nityaśaḥ:* "Always remembering Me." *Tasyāhaṁ sulabhaḥ pārtha* : "My dear Pārtha, Arjuna, for him I am very cheap." *Sulabhaḥ* means very easily available. --- **[1972: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1972/721028nd.vrn)** > So we have to relish the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* the contents of *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* from a devotee who is self-realized. Then it will be very nice. *Satāṁ prasaṅgān mama vīrya-saṁvido bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ*. When you hear about Kṛṣṇa from a Kṛṣṇa devotee, it becomes very pleasing to the ear and the heart. *Hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ.* Therefore to become Kṛṣṇa conscious, to become a devotee of Kṛṣṇa... *Tad-vijñānārthaṁ sa gurum evābhigacchet* [Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 1.2.12]. > Kṛṣṇa says that everyone should surrender unto Him. We are preaching the same philosophy, that "You surrender to Kṛṣṇa." Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru*. We say the same thing. We ask everyone that "You become a devotee of Kṛṣṇa. You think of Kṛṣṇa constantly. You worship Kṛṣṇa. You offer your obeisances unto Kṛṣṇa." So this is favorable. If we preach what Kṛṣṇa said five thousand years ago, that is favorable. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. To act in favor of Kṛṣṇa means Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.17](spoken/1972/721028sb.vrn)** > Anyway, we do not wish to discuss. But actually, if we want to get rid of all dirty things from our heart, we must hear scrutinizingly about Kṛṣṇa. This is the prescription given here. *Śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ*. If you do not understand, it doesn't matter. You simply give vibration..., hear the vibration. Just like we are doing. What, in European countries and American countries, they'll understand? But we are sending in every important street. > So we require *buddhi-yogam,* not *buddhi.* If we simply use our *buddhi,* intelligence, then we continue to become *duṣkṛtinaḥ. Buddhi's* there, but it is utilized in a misdirected way. That is called *duṣkṛtinaḥ.* Therefore we must engage our *buddhi...* Because *buddhi* is the immediate step before we realize self. First our conception is *indriyāṇi,* these senses. *Indriyāṇi parāṇy āhur indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ manaḥ*. We give very much importance to the senses. The bodily concept of life means to give importance to sense enjoyment. That's all. This is bodily concept of life. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 15.1](spoken/1973/731028bg.vrn)** > Therefore Kṛṣṇa says that *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante*. After studying *Vedas,* speculative knowledge, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān,* when one is actually a wise man, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate,* he surrenders to Kṛṣṇa. Why? *Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti*. Because Kṛṣṇa is everything. *Parasya brahmaṇaḥ śaktiḥ.* Whatever we see, whatever we experience, that is, everything, Kṛṣṇa's energy. This material world is also expansion of Kṛṣṇa's energy. Similarly, the spiritual world is also expansion of Kṛṣṇa's energy. The *brahma-jyoti* is also expansion of Kṛṣṇa's energy. Paramātmā is also expansion of Kṛṣṇa's plenary portion. In this way, when one understands perfectly well that whatever we are experiencing, that is Kṛṣṇa's energies... > I do not wish to name the big, big *sannyāsīs* of India who fell down in this way. But you know that the Māyāvādī *sampradāya,* they take this world as *mithyā. Brahma satyaṁ jagan mithyā.* If *jagat* is *mithyā,* then why you come down again for philanthropic activities, for political activities? That is called *māyā.* That is the last snare of *māyā. Māyā* dictates that "Now we have failed to become minister, to [become] president, and so many other big, big posts. Now you become Brahman." You are already Brahman. Simply you have to realize. That's all. That is knowledge, that "I am not the..." Brahman realization means that "I am not this body." Because so long one identifies with this body, he is no better than animal. That is the first lesson. Kṛṣṇa says in the beginning of the *Bhagavad-gītā, dehino 'smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā, tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ*. Dehi* and *dehina.* --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.48](spoken/1974/741028sb.may)** > So real sanity is to understand that this body belongs to Kṛṣṇa. We are misunderstanding that this body belongs to my father, mother, or my master or to the cats and dogs or the vultures—in so many ways. That is material. Materially, we can understand that. But spiritually, this body belongs to Kṛṣṇa because the body is made of, I mean to say, prepared by the eight elements. We have got the five elements, *bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ*. There is earth, water, air, fire, and the mind and the intelligence and the false ego. This is the eight combination of the matter. Then, the matter being agitated, there are ten senses and then sense objects. In this way this body is composition of twenty-four elements. But all these elements, Kṛṣṇa says, *bhinnā me prakṛtir aṣṭadhā* : "That is My energy." > So actually our body belongs to Kṛṣṇa, and I also belong to Kṛṣṇa. *Pārakya.* In both senses it belongs to other. Other means Kṛṣṇa. So logically, both the body, mind, intelligence and myself, everything should be engaged for Kṛṣṇa's interest. That is real knowledge. That is real knowledge. Kṛṣṇa says that *kṣetra-jñaṁ cāpi māṁ viddhi sarva-kṣetreṣu bhārata*. He is also *kṣetra-jña.* I am *kṣetra-jña* because I possess this body, and the body is *kṣetra,* the field of activities. Just like here the cultivators, they have got... Each one of them have got some land, and they are producing food grains or any other products according to his ability and capacity, and he's enjoying this property. Therefore he's called *kṣetra-jña* or *kṣetrī.* The field is called *kṣetra* and the owner is called *kṣetrī,* or *kṣetra-jña. Kṣetra-jña* means that cultivator knows that "This earmarked land is mine." *Kṣetra-jña.* "It belongs to me." So actually this field does not belong to him; it belongs to the government, because he has to pay, collect tax, to the collector. So actually land does not belong to him; it belongs to the government. Similarly, where is the difficulty to understand that although I am cultivating this body, *karma...* Taking this body as my field of activities, we are doing work. Everyone can understand it. But finally this body belongs to Kṛṣṇa, as this land belongs to the government. --- **[1975: Bhagavad-gītā 7.2](spoken/1975/751028bg.nai)** > So this *jñāna,* even this *jñāna,* that change of body is not there. Throughout the whole world, big, big professor, big, big educationist, they do not believe in the next birth—99.9%, they do not. But this is a fact. There is. *Tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ.* Kṛṣṇa says. And we understand this also. Kṛṣṇa gives this example: *dehino 'smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā*. This child is becoming *kumāra;* a *kumāra* is becoming boy; boy is becoming young man; young man is becoming old man. So these changes are going on; still, he does not know that "After this old body is finished, I shall have to accept another body." So this is ignorance. Therefore we have to take knowledge from the most perfect Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa. This is real knowledge. > Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *jñānaṁ te 'haṁ sa-vijñānam* : "I'll speak to you about *jñāna.*" Everyone is in *ajñāna* and falsely thinking that he is some very important person. This is *ajñāna.* Real *jñāna,* as will be explained here, is to receive from Kṛṣṇa. So Kṛṣṇa is giving knowledge in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* He'll speak in later chapters that "The real *jñāna* is to surrender unto Me." This is real *jñāna.* Kṛṣṇa will say in the Eighth Chapter, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate* : --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/751028mw.nai)** > They do not know what is the meaning of civilization. *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum*. Real civilization means to understand God. Here is God. Who'll accept, either you say God or nature, that "You are under control. You are not free"? That, this dog's obstinacy, they will not take it. Like a dog. What is the meaning of dog obstinacy? He'll go on disturbing: *"Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow!"* This is dog consciousness. How they can refuse, that "There is no authority"? They say, "No, we don't care for authority. Don't." But you are being kicked every moment. Still, there is no authority? Just see obstinacy. Why you are becoming old? Every moment you are being kicked. You cannot remain young. You are trying to remain young with pomade, with some color, with some this, teeth, wig, and... But you cannot, rascal. You cannot. You must become old. And still, he is thinking that he'll be able to remain young. This is called dog's obstinacy. He has got experience that nobody can remain young. I'll also not remain young also, although I want it, "Yes, if I can remain young, that is good facility." That he knows, but he won't find the way how he can remain. *Nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre. Nitya.* That path he will not take. Kṛṣṇa says, "Here is the way." *Nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre*. Advaitam acyutam anādim ananta-rūpam ādyaṁ purāṇa-puruṣaṁ nava-yauvanam* [Bs. 5.33]. > So we should preach like this. Any rascal... Because anyone who has no information of Kṛṣṇa, who is not Kṛṣṇa conscious, he's a rascal. That's all. That we must know. That is definite. There is no mistaking it. But if you say that "You are rascal. There is no mistaking it," then you cannot preach. If you directly call a rascal a rascal, he'll be angry. *Mūrkhāyopadeṣo hi prakopāya na śāntaye* [Cāṇakya Paṇḍita] To give good instruction to a fool, rascal, will increase his anger, that's all. Then you'll not be able to preach. So you have to become very humble, *tṛṇād api sunīcena,* humbler than the grass. Just like everyone is trampling over the grass; he doesn't protest, "Why you are going, keeping your leg on my head?" But that is the... *Tṛṇād api sunīcena*. Go on trampling. Hundreds and hundreds people are trampling over the grass; they don't protest. *Tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā.* The tree is standing. You sit down. When there is scorching heat, you take pleasure by sitting down under the shade. But the reward is that you cut the branches. That is their reward. He gives you shelter, and you cut the branch, you cut the whole tree. This is your gratefulness. You see? Because we are rascals, we do not know what is gratefulness. They are taking milk from the cow and killing. This is our position. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.6](spoken/1976/761028sb.vrn)** > Nitya siddha.* Just like I am, or you are, we are eternal. *Nityo śāśvato 'yam na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre*. We are not destroyed by the destruction of the body. We remain, continue to remain. Similarly, our devotion to Kṛṣṇa continues. It is simply covered. *Avidyayātmāny upādhiyamāne. Avidya.* This is *av*idya.* We forget Kṛṣṇa, that is *avidya.* And as soon as we take Kṛṣṇa as our life and soul, that is *vidya.* You can do. Anyone can do very easily. Kṛṣṇa says, therefore, *sarva dharmān parityajya mam ekam śaraṇaṁ*. Why? Any other so-called religious system, that is *avidya—*will keep you in ignorance. There is no light. And the Vedic injunction is that "Don't keep yourself in the darkness of ignorance." *Tamasi mā jyoti gamaḥ.* > There are different degrees of *guṇa.* The degrees are so mixed up. Therefore three *guṇas* is manifested into 8,400,000's of different forms of life, mixture. You can calculate—we have several times calculated—three multiplied by three equal nine. Nine multiplied by nine, eighty-one. So therefore there are so many varieties. So human civilization should be so arranged that never mind it is so mixed up, you have to gradually draw him again to the *sattva-guṇa.* That is human civilization. Not that drag him again to the *tamo-guṇa.* Somebody, by pious activities, by good work, he's already in the *sattva-guṇa,* but the arrangement, the social, political, economical arrangement, is so bad that one is dragged to the *tamo-guṇa.* This is not civilization. This is degradation. Civilization means elevation. The aim is how to become disconnected with this material body. This is civilization. Otherwise that is not civilization, it is animal life. *Yasyātma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhātuke*. --- **[1977: Room Conversation](spoken/1977/771028r1.vrn)** >Śatadhanya, when we called Calcutta, and then I could not fall asleep properly because I was very... My mind was active last night. For three hours I was not sleeping. --- ## Letters on October 28 *Letters from this day: 15* --- **[1967: Letter to Aatie](letters/1967/671028_aatie)** > I thank you very much for your letter dated Oct. 19 & I am so happy that a boy of 17 years can feel so nicely about Krishna Consciousness.
