# October 27 ## Spoken on October 27 *Lectures from this day: 9 recordings* --- **[1972: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1972/721027nd.vrn)** > Therefore the theory of merging into the existence of impersonal Brahman is to stay there for some time, again fall down. Just like the same example that the water of the rivers, they merge into the ocean, but again it is evaporated in the sky, and it falls, again goes through the river, merges. *Bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyate*.* This is going on. One mani..., once manifested, and again merging. This is going on. So our philosophy is that once going into the ocean, no more coming back. *Tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti kaunteya*. > At the present moment, it has become a fashion to manufacture some idea. But that is not the Vedic way. Vedic way is to receive the message through *paramparā* system. *Evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayoḥ viduḥ*. Not to deviate the *paramparā.* So Sanātana Gosvāmī was taught by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu continually for two months personally in Benares, Vārāṇasī. Therefore he's our authority. --- **[1972: Room Conversation](spoken/1972/721027r1.vrn)** > Therefore, to become *brāhmaṇa* means *satyam.* You know the meaning of *satyam*? *Satyam* means truth. The first quality is truth. *Satyaṁ śaucam ārjavam āstikyaṁ jñānaṁ vijñānam.* The beginning is *satyam.* Generally, the people in pilgrimages like Vṛndāvana and other, they have taken this religiousness as a profession to earn money, just like other businessmen do. That is cheating. > So we should be intelligent. Why should we take another chance of becoming hogs and dogs? But that requires intelligence. Ultimately they will be delivered, but it will be delayed by becoming hogs and dogs once. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.16](spoken/1972/721027sb.vrn)** > When we increase the taste for Kṛṣṇa, for understanding Kṛṣṇa... This *ruci* comes when one is actually liberated. This *ruci. Tato 'nartha-nivṛttiḥ syāt.* First of all, *śraddadhānasya.* As it is stated here, *śraddhā,* faith. Kṛṣṇa is... Kṛṣṇa says that *mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya* : "There is no more superior authority than Me." *Mattaḥ parataraṁ na anyat. Na,* "Nobody else. I am the Supreme." > So what is the idea? The idea is to elevate everyone gradually to the position of *brāhmaṇa* and Vaiṣṇava, and thus make their life perfect. That is the scheme of Vedic civilization. *Cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ*. Not that "Keep the *śūdras* or the *mlecchas* in the downtrodden position, and let me advance." No. Everyone should cooperate. Why the *śūdras* or *mlecchas* and *yavanas* should remain as such? Actually, India's falldown is meant by that process. Nobody cared. So many Muslims, they converted, but the higher caste, they did not care: "Oh, they have become Muslims. Reject them." Why reject? Kṛṣṇa says, --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.47](spoken/1974/741027sb.may)** > First-class devotion is to serve Kṛṣṇa just to please Him. If He is pleased, if He says that "You kill your son," then we should be prepared to do that. That is called *vairāgya-vidyā.* Of course, never Kṛṣṇa says like that, but actually, in the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra, Arjuna was ordered, if not the son but the nephew. But his sons were also killed. So this is duty. So many people inquire, "Kṛṣṇa was inducing people to fight?" But this fight by the order of Kṛṣṇa and the fight or war declared for the satisfaction of the politicians, they are not the same. We must always remember. They are not the same. > So one has to make advance. What is that advance? That advance is... What is that verse? The four kinds of... *Prema-maitrī-kṛpopekṣā yaḥ karoti sa madhyamaḥ*. Īśvare tad-adhīneṣu.* The further advancement... One has to make advance, stage by stage, from the *kaniṣṭha-adhikārī,* from the lower stage, to the middle stage to the higher stage. So the next stage, from *prākṛta,* from material position... Of course, any devotion is..., any devotee is not on the material platform. He is... But if we remain more on the material platform, not on the spiritual platform, then we'll fall down. We'll fall down. Therefore one should try to make forward march. The forward march is to become a preacher. *Bhakteṣu cānyeṣu.* Preaching means to obey the order of the spiritual master or superior authorities and to good to others, do good to others. They are suffering for want of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Try to preach them. This is the second stage. If we simply become blocked up for Deity worship and do not preach, then we remain in the lowest stage. But when we take up this work, preaching... --- **[1975: Bhagavad-gītā 7.1](spoken/1975/751027bg.nai)** > So we should take advantage of *Bhagavad-gītā.* And even though we take advantage, we interpret in a different way. The same business is going on, how to kill Kṛṣṇa. Instead of understanding Kṛṣṇa, the endeavor is going on to kill Kṛṣṇa. *Asura.* Just like Kaṁsa. He was always thinking of Kṛṣṇa. His sister was pregnant, and it is foretold that "The eighth child of your sister will kill you." So he was thinking of Kṛṣṇa, that "The eighth child...," but with a purpose to kill Him. That is the business of the *asuras,* how to wipe out Kṛṣṇa, Kaṁsa philosophy. So we haven't got to follow Kaṁsa philosophy. We have to follow Kṛṣṇa philosophy. Then our life will be successful. *Ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānuśīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā*. Ānukūlyena,* favorably, favorably to think of Kṛṣṇa. As Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru*. > So here Kṛṣṇa says that "You have got already attraction, but in false things which will not exist. You turn that attraction unto Me. Then you'll get pleasure." You are attracted to something for getting some pleasure. So that pleasure is interrupted because we have posed our attraction in some false things. You have to change that attraction to the real thing, Kṛṣṇa. Then you'll be happy. *Mayy āsakta. Mayy āsakta. Mayi:* "Unto Me," Kṛṣṇa says personally. If you... Attraction means you have to engage your mind. *Mayy āsakta-manāḥ.* Attraction does not come in the air. The mind, mind fully engaged in something, is called attraction. So this is *yoga, bhakti-yoga.* And this *yoga* has to be executed... Kṛṣṇa says, *mad-āśrayaḥ:* "You have to execute this *yoga* system, taking shelter of Me." "Me" means either Kṛṣṇa Himself or His representative. Just like Kṛṣṇa says in the Fourth Chapter, *evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ*. --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.28.18](spoken/1975/751027sb.nai)** > Have you got that realization, that Kṛṣṇa is within your heart? Can you talk with Kṛṣṇa? He says, Kṛṣṇa says, "I talk." *Buddhi yogaṁ-dadāmi tam*.Kṛṣṇa gives intelligence. Kṛṣṇa is giving, but have you got that realization? So these are all facts, that Kṛṣṇa is everywhere, Kṛṣṇa is within your heart, Kṛṣṇa is within the atom. *Aṇḍāntara-stha-paramāṇu-cayāntara-sthaṁ* [Bs. 5.35], that's a fact, but where is your realization? Therefore you have to begin realization by *arcana.* That is very essential. The more you become expert in *arcana, ye yathā mām prapadyante*,* Then the more you become realized, then more you become advanced. So therefore, for *kaniṣṭha-adhikārī,* he has to raise himself. > Kīrtanya-tīrtha-yaśasaṁ puṇya-śloka-yaśaskaram dhyāyed devam*. Devam. Devam* means the Supreme Lord. *Samagrāṅgam.* So if He has no form, how you can think of His whole body, *samagra*? *Samagra* means the whole; *aṅgam* means body. *Samagrāṅgam.* So if He has no body, if He is formless, if He is *nirākāra,* then where is the question of *aṅgam?* He has *aṅgam, samagrāṅgam,* but He hasn't got a form like us. That is the meaning. When in the *śāstra* it is said that God has no form, it means that He has no material form. He has form; otherwise how can I think of His form? This Kṛṣṇa's form is not like us. Just like if you take my statue or any other statue and if you pray or if you offer food, that does not go actually to the person. But Kṛṣṇa's His *aṅga,* His form, is nondifferent from Kṛṣṇa. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.5](spoken/1976/761027sb.vrn)** > The same thing. No *siddhi.* If you do not get success, then what is the use of your working so hard? *Na siddhiṁ sa avāpnoti. Na sukhaṁ na parām.* So without consulting *śāstra,* without consulting *guru,* without consulting Kṛṣṇa... Kṛṣṇa is so kind, He has given. He has come to help you, because you are being misled by the so-called leaders. Kṛṣṇa says, *yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati*. These rascals, these leaders, they will simply mislead you. *Andhā yathāndhair upanīyamānās*. They are blind. They do not know how to live. They do not know. Therefore Kṛṣṇa personally comes: "All right, I shall lead you. Take My advice, take My instruction, and ultimately surrender unto Me. Then I'll lead you back to home, back to Godhead." > It is very quite natural, whatever you do, your mind will be absorbed in that business. *Karmātmakam.* Therefore our mind should be engaged always in Kṛṣṇa: *sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padaravindayor*. Then we can be relieved from this *śarīra-bandhaḥ.* Unfortunately, there is no education that it is a great hamper, impediment, to our progress of life, this material body. And in the Vedic civilization, this material body is condemned everywhere—material. *Śarīra-bandhaḥ,* they do not understand. --- **[1977: Room Conversation with Hari Prasad Badruka](spoken/1977/771027r1.vrn)** > Dr. Singh opposed the theory that life could be understood solely in terms of chemical combinations. There were intricate features of life, ranging from the structure of molecules in living cells to the subtle ones of human personality. The simple push-pull laws of chemistry and physics 'cannot account for these phenomena,' and 'life and matter are understood as two distinct kinds of energy.' Mr. Cohen said that 'Proof of the Darwinian theory of evolution must depend in the end on the fossil record. Darwin's theory required that all the different species of life were gradually transformed, one into another, through many small changes, mutations. Yet prominent paleontologists such as Eldridge and Gould are now maintaining that the fossil record only supports the view that species remain static in form and that changes between them, if they do really occur at all, can only occur by abrupt leaps. An examination of possible causes for such leaps shows that they could only be accounted for by the action of a higher intelligence,' he said. > These are the *śāstra. Mano-rathena,* those who are on the speculative platform, they cannot have their spiritual qualities. It is a... To the modern world it is a novel idea. It is not idea; this is original qualification. Part and parcel of God, it must be godlike. Gold is gold, may be a small particle. Similarly, living entity, part and parcel of God, so he is God undoubtedly—in a small particle. But that is sufficient for his perfection. They are being misled other ways, in the wrong side. So who will not like it, unless he's a rogue. Huh? --- **[1977: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Dictation SB 10.13.62](spoken/1977/771027sb.vrn)** > Otherwise it is not possible. [break] Actually, the speculative process is not sufficient; it is different from self-realization. [break] The Māyāvādīs, they think this is all imagination, so they give up the real path of progress and remain on this... [break]...that is the sign of their ignorance. *Bhakti udapāsya* and the path of *bhakti* they give up. >like a human child, Parabrahma: *brahmeti paramātmeti bhagavān iti... *. The Supreme Lord is *narākṛti:* like human being. Not *catur-bāhu*. Nārāyaṇa is *catur-bāhu,* but the Supreme Person is like human being. [coughs heavily] And why all the authorities said, "Made after God"? --- ## Letters on October 27 *Letters from this day: 14* --- **[1967: Letter to Rayarama](letters/1967/671027_rayarama)** > My blessings are for you for the latest nice edition of BTG's. I am very glad to learn from my disciple, Srimati Govinda Dasi, that you are reading our books and literature with some interest. It has given me much satisfaction, and if you read our *Srimad-Bhagavatam* you will find there what is the distinction between realization of *Brahman, Paramatma* (impersonal Supersoul), and the Personality of Godhead. According to *Srimad-Bhagavatam,* all of these realizations are on the transcendental plane as much as sunshine, the sunglobe, and the predominating deity on the sunglobe are all full of light and high temperatures. Similarly, either in *Brahman, Paramatma* or *Bhagavan* (Personality of Godhead) realization you will always find spiritual light and heat. But as there are different degrees of sunshine, the sunglobe and the sun's deity, similarly there are also degrees of transcendental bliss in the different features of the Absolute. The summary is that the Absolute Truth is the sum total of eternity, bliss and knowledge. Impersonal feature of the Absolute Truth is realization of eternity. Localized *Paramatma* realization is realization of transcendental knowledge. But above all these as they are described in *Bhagavad-gita* there is Purusottam, the Supreme Person. That is Krsna. In the Vedas it is stated that one who has understood the Supreme Person has understood everything. This is because everything is subordinate to the Supreme Person. So if you kindly try to understand this philosophy of the Supreme Person as described in *Bhagavad-gita,* 8th chapter, you will understand our activities more clearly. Or if you so desire, you can write to me for further understanding of this Krsna Consciousness philosophy. Hare Krsna. I thank you again for your interest. --- **[1969: Letter to Upendra](letters/1969/691027_upendra)** > Regarding the "Prabhupada's Table", from the next year you will be getting so many books for selling. --- **[1970: Letter to Gargamuni](letters/1970/701027_gargamuni)** > In regards to why you have been branded as Mayavadi sannyasi by society members, that is because you are identifying the Spiritual Master as God. --- **[1972: Letter to Aksayananda](letters/1972/721027_aksayananda)** > I am happy to hear all of the programs there in Amsterdam temple are going on nicely, and I think you are the best man to give all of the younger students good advice and guidance how to make... --- **[1972: Letter to Kirtanananda](letters/1972/721027_kirtanananda)** > Now we are in Radha-Damodara Temple staying, and the programme of speaking morning and evening in the courtyard is going on very nicely. --- **[1974: Letter to Jayatirtha](letters/1974/741027_jayatirtha)** > I understand from Bhavananda and Jayapataka that you have agreed to give Dollars 8,000. --- **[1976: Letter to Bahudak](letters/1976/761027_bahudak)** > Upon your recommendation I will accept the following devotees for first initiation, as well as the ones you have recommended for second initiation. --- **[1976: Letter to Jayatirtha](letters/1976/761027_jayatirtha)** > I am very pleased to see how nice the book distribution is increasing in Germany.
