# October 22 ## Spoken on October 22 *Lectures from this day: 8 recordings* --- **[1972: Sannyāsa Initiations](spoken/1972/721022in.vrn)** > Therefore this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is directly [indistinct] contact with Bhagavān. Bhagavān. Because Bhagavān... What is the symptom of contacting Bhagavān? That is stated in *Bhagavad-gītā*, *brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā*. If one has actually realized how his identification with Brahman, then immediately he will become very joyful. *Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā,* that is the symptom. He has no more any cause of being morose; he must be joyful, *brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā.* > Simply uttering *ahaṁ brahmasmi,* that is not our goal, "I am Brahman." Actually I am spirit soul, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul. *Mamaivāṁśo jīva-bhūtaḥ. A*ll *jīvas* are part and parcel of God, Brahman, part of Brahman, as the spark of fire is also fire. Similarly, the part and parcel of Brahman is also Brahman. So the Vedic injunction is that you are Brahman; you are not this matter. So how you can be given [indistinct] saying. Simply being that "I am a very rich man. I am a very rich man," that will not satisfy you. You must become rich, actually then you can say, "I am rich man." Potentially rich man; therefore I am a rich man—no. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.11](spoken/1972/721022sb.vrn)** > If you can finish in this life cent per cent, that is very nice. If not... Suppose you have finished fifty percent. Still it is permanent asset. It will never be lost. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says *avyayam,* inexhaustible. *Imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam*. So here we find that the Absolute Truth is realized as Brahman, Paramātmā and Bhagavān. Bhagavān is the ultimate, the last word in the understanding of the Absolute Truth. Unless you come to the point of Bhagavān, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa... > Actually, we have to reach to the point of Personality of Godhead, person. Before that, Brahman realization and Paramātmā realization, that is partial realization of the Absolute Truth, because Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, brahmaṇaḥ ahaṁ pratiṣṭhā*. The impersonal Brahman is resting on Kṛṣṇa. Just like the sunshine. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 13.23](spoken/1973/731022bg.bom)** > As soon as we know that "I am not owner of this body, I am the occupier of the body," that is knowledge. We are falsely claiming that we are owner of the body. We are not owner of the body. I cannot therefore repair anything. If any part of my limb of my body goes wrong, I do not know how to repair it. But Kṛṣṇa can do it, because He is the owner, Hṛṣīkeśa. Hṛṣīkeśa. *Hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa-sevanaṁ bhaktir ucyate*. You have to pay to the owner. Similarly, we have to serve Kṛṣṇa for occupying this body. That is devotion. *Yajñārthe karmaṇo 'nyatra loko 'yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ*. > Because it is also explained, *sarvataḥ pāṇi-pādas tat. Sarvataḥ pāṇi-pādas tat* means everywhere the Supreme Lord has got His hands and legs. So what is that? How He has got hands and legs? Your hands, my hands, they are hands of Kṛṣṇa. Therefore it should be used for Kṛṣṇa. Just like your hand. We are claiming, "This is my hand." This hand is used for my service. Suppose if you want to eat something, you use your hand for eating, but for other's eating, you don't use your hand; he uses his own hand. This is an example. So all these hands and legs belong to Kṛṣṇa. It should be used for Kṛṣṇa. That is called *bhakti. Hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa-sevanaṁ bhaktir ucyate*. If you don't use, then that is against the laws of nature. --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.42](spoken/1974/741022sb.may)** > All these Vedic literatures, all these philosophy, science and everything... That is the verdict of *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: yad uttama-śloka-guṇānuvarṇanam*. You may be talented in so many ways. You may be very big man—politician or philosopher or chemist or physist. So many we are, we are occupied. So why you should become big man? What is the purpose? The purpose is to understand Kṛṣṇa. Intelligent. So whatever talent you have got, it doesn't matter. Whatever you may be—you may be engineer—but if you are intelligent actually, through engineering you'll describe Kṛṣṇa, how Kṛṣṇa is the greatest engineer so that He's keeping all the planets floating in the air. That is engineer. You cannot do it. He is keeping... *Gām āviśya*. He has said. *Aham ojasā dhārayāmi,* Kṛṣṇa says. So we have to understand Kṛṣṇa like that. Kṛṣṇa says like that: "I am keeping all these planets floating." Now, if you are a physist, then you try to understand how Kṛṣṇa is keeping them floating. That is your perfection. That is your perfection. If you remain a physist or chemist and don't understand Kṛṣṇa, it is a waste of time. It is waste of time. > These four things: "Always think of Me..." Everyone can think of Kṛṣṇa. He is thinking of so many nonsense things; why not Kṛṣṇa? Here is Kṛṣṇa. If you simply think of Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā-Mādhava, then where... Is very difficult thing? Therefore temple is there so that you see Kṛṣṇa always or at some interval—during *ārati,* during *maṅgala-ārati,* during *bhoga...* So the impression is always within your heart, and you think of. Where is the difficulty? Where is the difficulty? No difficulty. So Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manāḥ.* And if you have no time to come to the temple, all right, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. You hear the name of Kṛṣṇa. That is not different from Kṛṣṇa. The... After all, impression, either you hear or see, the experience is there. So you can think of Kṛṣṇa very easily. It doesn't require any university qualification. Anyone, any rascal, can do it. It is so easy. It doesn't require high education to think of Kṛṣṇa. Woman, children, anyone. --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.2–3](spoken/1975/751022sb.joh)** > So this Hare Kṛṣṇa *mahā-mantra* means... We are preaching all over the world. There is no difficulty. Everyone is joining. Everyone is chanting. So it is not very difficult task. Any can... This is *yajña.* And then *dāna. Dāna* means charity. So whatever you earn, at least some percentage of your money should be given in charity. The best charity is to give for spreading this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, God consciousness. Kṛṣṇa said, *dadāsi yat kuruṣva tad mad-arpanam :* "If you want to give in charity something, please give Me." Kṛṣṇa says, God says. So *yajña-dāna-tapaḥ,* again *tapa,* austerity. *Yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-kriyā pāvanāni manīṣiṇām*. We should not give up this practice, performing *yajña,* giving in charity and practicing *tapasya.* This is essential for the human being. This should be practiced as far as possible. So this is called pious activities. So one should be engaged in pious activities. Then there will be no chance of committing sinful activities. In this way, when you are mature, *yeṣāṁ tv anta-gataṁ pāpam,* no more sinful life, pure life, *yeṣāṁ tv anta-gataṁ pāpam janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām,* always practicing pious activities, *te dvandva-moha-nirmuktā,* such person without any doubt, without any duality, can be engaged in the service of the Lord. Such person. > "That Absolute Truth is realized... They are one, but realized in three different phases." Just like the example is given, I have given several times, that the sun, the sun globe and the sun-god. There is... Within the sun globe there is sun-god. His name is Vivasvān. As you refer to *Bhagavad-gītā,* in the *Bhagavad-gītā* you will find the predominating deity, or the president, of the sun globe. His name is Vivasvān. *Imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam*. Kṛṣṇa says that many millions of years ago He went to the sun globe and He preached this *Bhagavad-gītā* to the sun-god, the president of the sun globe, Vivasvān. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.1](spoken/1976/761022sb.vrn)** > Therefore many *sannyasis*, they take to this material activities, philanthropic activities, opening hospitals, shelter for the poor, because they could not get any *ānanda* in that impersonal Brahman state. Ānanda-mayo 'bhyāsāt. By nature you want *ānanda,* but there is no *ānanda*. The same example I have given many times, that if you fly very, very high in the sky, and after few hours you become restless with sky, you must be..., come back. Because in the impersonal sky there is no *ānanda*. *Āruhya kṛcchreṇa*. > To go very high by aeroplane or sputnik it requires money, it requires talent, mechanical arrangement, so many things. So that is austerity. But still you cannot stay there. You have to come back again. There are many examples. The Russian aeronautics, when they are going in sputnik, they are looking after, "Where is Moscow? Where is Moscow?" because Moscow is variety, and in the sky there is no variety. Therefore this example is very nice, that in the impersonal Brahman existence you cannot exist. That's all. Because they have no information of the spiritual variety. That spiritual variety is available in the Vaikuṇṭha planet. But you have no licence; therefore you return to Moscow. So *paraṁ padaṁ*. Although you...,it is so vast in the impersonal *Brahman*, *patanty adhaḥ.* Why? *Anādṛta-yuṣmad-aṅghrayaḥ*. Without any devotional service to the lotus feet of the Lord. --- **[1977: Room Conversation](spoken/1977/771022r1.vrn)** > Pañcadraviḍa*:* My great-uncle, he had tonsillitis, so he went to a friend who was a doctor, and the friend said, "That's all right. We'll operate, and I will not charge you anything." So he went into the hospital, and in the operation the doctor dropped a scalpel, and after that... He was very big, and he became very small, never could eat again. [break] > Vaidyaji:* [Transl. *Makara-dhvaja* must be given to him. *Makara-dhvaja* has to be given and also *Gaṅgā-jala* for drinking. No other treatment is necessary at this point. These two things should continue.] --- **[1977: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Dictation](spoken/1977/771022sb.vrn)** > Cintya.* Our arguments, our thoughts, are *cintya,* or we can contemplate. *Acintya* means we cannot contemplate it; we have to accept. In other words it is called *avaroha-panthā. Avaroha,* and therefore *avatāra*—that which descends. And material way is *āroha-panthā:* by argument, by reason, they want to understand. But these things are not like that. *Āroha-panthā*, no. *Avaroha-panthā.* Therefore we accept *paramparā,* and the best *paramparā* is Kṛṣṇa. *Evaṁ paramparā-prāptam *. What Kṛṣṇa says, we accept. *Imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ*—this is called *avaroha-panthā*. *Avaroha avatāra ādikam*[?]. Hmm. [break] > And this is working in such a way as if naturally it is so made. One who at least running like this along with this another rod is moving so, and the work is going on. The purpose for the machine: when this is going on. This is explained in the *Vedas, parāsya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate.*And we give different names: this is wheel, this is screw, this is lubrication, this is spindle. So many names to work naturally. So Kṛṣṇa's power is so variegated that same *śakti*, potency, to work in different ways. Is that clear? --- ## Letters on October 22 *Letters from this day: 17* --- **[1967: Letter to Brahmananda](letters/1967/671022_brahmananda)** > Your suggestion for opening a center in Russia is welcomed as the Europeans were very enterprising in the Middle-historical period for colonization.
