# October 16 *Lectures from this day: 11 recordings* --- **[[spoken/721016nd.vrn|The Nectar of Devotion — October 16, 1972, Vṛndāvana]]** **Pradyumna:** [reading]* "...is a summary study of *Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu,* which was written in Sanskrit by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī Prabhupāda. He was the chief of the six Gosvāmīs who were the direct disciples of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. When he first met Lord Caitanya, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī Prabhupāda was engaged as a minister in the Muhammadan government of Bengal. He and his brother Sanātana were then named Sākara Mallika and Dabira Khāsa respectively, and they held responsible posts as ministers of Nawab Hussain Shah. At that time, five hundred years ago, the Hindu society was very rigid, and if a member of the *brāhmaṇa* caste accepted the service of a Muhammadan ruler he was at once rejected from *brāhmaṇa* society. That was the position of the two brothers Dabira Khāsa and Sākara Mallika. They belonged to the highly situated *sārasvata-brāhmaṇa**...*" **Prabhupāda:** These two brothers, at that time their name was Sākara Mallika and Dabira Khāsa. So they were ostracized from the *brāhmaṇa* community. That is Caitanya Mahāprabhu's special grace, that He accepted two rejected gentlemen from the *brāhmaṇa* society and made them *gosvāmīs.* That is the special significance of Caitanya Mahāprabhu's movement. He accepted Haridāsa Ṭhākura from born in Muhammadan community and He made him the *ācārya, namācārya.* --- **[[spoken/721016sb.vrn|SB 1.2.5 — October 16, 1972, Vṛndāvana]]** **Prabhupāda:** > ...bhavadbhir loka-maṅgalam > yat kṛtaḥ kṛṣṇa-sampraśno > yenātmā suprasīdati > [[sb/1/2/5|[SB. 1.2.5] ]] So the sages in the Naimiṣāraṇya, their inquiry was that "After departure of Kṛṣṇa, the principles of religion, under whom they are now protected?" Religious principles should be protected. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa's another name is Dharmasetu: He protects. *Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata, tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham* [[bg/4/7|[Bg. 4.7] ]]. Just like it is the duty of the state, of the government, to give protection to the department of law and order, similarly Kṛṣṇa, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He gives protection to religious principles. But the world is so deteriorated that Kṛṣṇa comes, He gives protection, makes things in order, leaves His instruction... Just like when Kṛṣṇa came, He personally supervised the religious principles, and practically, He killed so many demons who were against religious principles. Demons means those who are against religious principles. And He left His instruction, *Bhagavad-gītā,* how to follow religious principles. --- **[[spoken/741016le.may|Lecture [Bengali] — October 16, 1974, Māyāpur]]** --- **[[spoken/741016sb.may|SB 1.8.36 — October 16, 1974, Māyāpur]]** **Nitāi:** "O Kṛṣṇa, those who continuously hear, chant and repeat Your transcendental activities, or take pleasure in others doing so, certainly see Your lotus feet, which alone can stop the repetition of birth and death." **Prabhupāda:** Where is that boy who said that some Nepali boy has come? You told me some new boy has come? --- **[[spoken/751016mw.joh|Morning Walk — October 16, 1975, Johannesburg]]** **Prabhupāda:** ...to these people that "Without Kṛṣṇa consciousness, you are trying to become happy by material adjustment. This will never be successful." So what is their answer? **Prabhupāda:** You have to be... You will be kicked out from the house. You will not be allowed to stay here. What is this success? You will be kicked out. What is your success? You have constructed very nice house. Very good. All credit to you. But I shall kick you out. What you will do? Where is your success? Hmm? It is waste of time. That is sane man's intelligence: "If I am going to be kicked out, why shall I spoil my energy in this way?" This is intelligence. But they have no intelligence even. **Prabhupāda:** Why fatalistic? It is practical. You want to live, you want to enjoy this nice house, but you are not allowed. Why don't you talk practically? That is your foolishness, that you will not be allowed—that's a fact—but still, you are spoiling your energy. That is foolishness. --- **[[spoken/751016r1.joh|Room Conversation with Reporter of The Star — October 16, 1975, Johannesburg]]** **Prabhupāda:** [to **Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa**] That you can reply. [to reporter] Just preach this cult, Kṛṣṇa consciousness. I was expected since a long time. So I could not come here due to my other engagements. **Prabhupāda:** Every country is all right. I don't find any fault. But only difficulty is that all over the world the civilization is being misdirected. **Prabhupāda:** Misdirected. They are not taking importance of the right thing. Just like we are in this body. Now, when the body is dead, we cry that "My father is gone away," "My son is gone away." But if I reply that "Your father is lying on the bed. Why you're crying that your father has gone away?" what will be the reply? The father whom the son has seen since his birth, that body in the coat and pant, so that coat-pant and body is there on the bed, and why the son is crying, "My father has gone away"? What is the reply? What should be the reply? --- **[[spoken/761016bg.cha|Bg 9.3 [Hindi] — October 6, 1976, Chandigarh]]** **Pradyumna:** > aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā > dharmasyāsya paran-tapa > aprāpya māṁ nivartante > mṛtyu-saṁsāra-vartmani > [[bg/9/3|[Bg. 9.3] ]] **Translation:** "Those who are not faithful on the path of devotional service cannot attain Me, O conqueror of foes, but return to birth and death in this material world." **Prabhupāda:** > aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā > dharmasyāsya paran-tapa > aprāpya māṁ nivartante > mṛtyu-saṁsāra-vartmani > [[bg/9/3|[Bg. 9.3] ]] --- **[[spoken/761016iv.cha|Press Interview — October 16, 1976, Chandigarh]]** **[reporters from the English-language *Times of India*, the Press Trust of India, UNI, the Punjabi *Akali Patarika* and *Ajit,* and the Hindi and Urdu *Hind Samachar.*] **Gopāla Kṛṣṇa:** About five hundred libraries in India have ordered these books in the last four months. **Prabhupāda:** India's culture and knowledge are richer than any other country. And that is being accepted. Yes. Real knowledge, real culture is in India. Unfortunately, we did not try in that way. We simply went to the foreign countries to beg, "Give us wheat, give us this, give us this, give us that." But if we give our culture, they will accept that India is still richer than any other country. --- **[[spoken/771016r1.vrn|Room Conversation About 10th Canto — October 16, 1977, Vṛndāvana]]** **Prabhupāda:** We can work little. [break] ...here and sit down. [break] ...is the spelling of your name Avirāma or Abhirāma? **Abhirāma:** When you initiated me, Śrīla Prabhupāda, you, at least in the letter, it was spelled Avhi, Avhi. But generally you call me Abhi. **Abhirāma:** Śrīla Prabhupāda, in the initiation letter you said that it means one who is affectionate to Rāma. --- **[[spoken/771016r2.vrn|Room Conversation With Dr. G. Ghosh of Allahabad — October 16, 1977, Vṛndāvana]]** **Tamāla Kṛṣṇa:** Yes. Just now we were going to do. He has not had any bowel movement in about six days. **Dr. Ghosh:** Glucose, you see? The bowel may be washed daily. That will also give him a little nourishment and as well as... You see? Keep his bowels going. **Tamāla Kṛṣṇa:** The doctors who have been coming said that the heart was not bad and the tongue looks all right. --- **[[spoken/771016r3.vrn|Room Conversation With Baradrāj — October 16, 1977, Vṛndāvana]]** **Baradrāj:** This is a simple outline here. Theme. The theme of this exhibit is "What is life and what is the purpose of life?" So it is in four sections. The first section deals with... It's an introduction, and it deals with the basic topics: "What I am and who I am." And then we go to explain what is the embodied soul. First we show the process of creation, how the world is created. **Baradrāj:** I'm just giving a very simple outline now. There's more notes on this. Then we show how the spirit soul enters the creation by Mahā-Viṣṇu. And then we show how the soul evolves up to human form of life through all the different species. Then, in the second..., in the third portion, rather, we deal with the human form of life. And there's five different points: first, the place of the human form in the evolutionary cycle; and number two, human form of life as a turning point; then three, human life is meant for self-realization, not sense gratification; and four, not executing the mission of human life is the source of all problems; and five, establishment and maintenance of *dharma* by the *avatāras* and the disciplic succession. And the last movement is entitled "The Perfection of Life." **Baradrāj:** The last portion of the exhibition is called "The Perfection of Life," and it is comprised of two portions, two parts. The first part describes the process of self-realization, and the second part is called the transcendence into the spiritual world, with emphasis on the reality of transcendental variegatedness and personality. That means we're actually going to try to give the viewer an experience of becoming purified. His senses are gradually becoming purified through the process of self-realization, and then we take him through the different spiritual realizations. And then the last part is *Vṛndāvana-līlā* of Kṛṣṇa, to show that the Lord is a perfect person and that everyone has a place in His personal service in the spiritual world. So this is the... That's the simple outline, and I have another portion here which deals a little more elaborately. I'll just read some of the things to you. --- ## Letters - [[../../letters/1967/671016_brahmananda.md|Letter to Brahmananda, 1967]] - [[../../letters/1967/671016_kirtanananda.md|Letter to Kirtanananda, 1967]] - [[../../letters/1967/671016_rayarama.md|Letter to Rayarama, 1967]] - [[../../letters/1968/681016_b._n._jariwala.md|Letter to B.
