# September 27 ## Spoken on September 27 *Lectures from this day: 11 recordings* --- **[1968: Lecture](spoken/1968/680927le.sea)** > So we should think like that. That is the example. However perfect you may be in serving Kṛṣṇa, you should always know that... Kṛṣṇa is unlimited, so your service cannot reach Him perfectly. It will ever remain imperfect, because we are limited. But Kṛṣṇa is so kind. If you offer a little service sincerely, He accepts. That is the beauty of Kṛṣṇa. *Svalpam apy asya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt*. And if Kṛṣṇa accepts a little service from you, then your life is glorious. > So in the higher atmosphere the past and present is different. So this past, present, future is relative according to your body, according to circumstances. Actually, there is no past, present, future; everything is eternal. You are eternal, *nityo śāśvato 'yaṁ na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre*. You do not die. Therefore... The people do not know that "I am eternal. What is my eternal engagement? What is my eternal life?" They're simply captivated on the spot life: "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am this," "I am that." That's all. This is ignorance. So one has to search out this eternal engagement with Kṛṣṇa. Then he'll be happy. --- **[1972: Śuddha-bhakata-caraṇa-reṇu and Purport](spoken/1972/720927mu.la)** > Prasāda-sebā korite hoya sakala prapañca jaya,* "and when I take, respect the *prasādam* offered to Kṛṣṇa then I think that I am becoming liberated," actually it is so. The more we eat ordinary foodstuff we become entangled. In the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is said that, *yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ*. "One who eats *prasādam* he becomes free from all contamination of life." > Śuddha-bhakata-caraṇa-reṇu*, *bhajana-anukūla.* This is a song, sung by Bhaktivinode Ṭhākura in pursuance of Prahlāda Mahārāja's instructions in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam*. Prahlāda Mahārāja has recommended, eh. N*aiṣāṁ matis tāvad urukramāṅghrim* "one cannot have pure devotional attachment to the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord." *Naiṣāṁ matis tāvad urukramāṅghrim, spṛśaty anarthāpagamo yad-arthaḥ,* "by touching the lotus feet of a pure devotee means immediately all misconceptions of life becomes eradicated." --- **[1972: Morning Walk](spoken/1972/720927mw.la)** > That any common man can do but was see educated to become a Dr. of Science for that purpose? But why he was doing? Necessity has no law. So therefore, *daridra-doṣo guṇa-rāśir nāśī* [Cāṇakya Paṇḍita], if you become poor even though you have got many good qualities. > Svarūpa Dāmodara: So the scientists when the moment comes that there is nothing that we can do about when they come to realize that the Supreme Being is controlling all these phenomena then they'll. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.3.22](spoken/1972/720927sb.la)** > Just like Prahlāda Mahārāja. Nṛsiṁhadeva appeared not to kill his teeny father. To kill his teeny father... Simply by directing the *māyā,* he could be killed. But He wanted to come before Prahlāda Mahārāja, that "You are My such nice devotee. You are suffering for Me. Now I have come. You see." This is the purpose. By the by, to kill the atheist, keeping the promise of Brahmā intact... He took benediction from Brahmā that "I shall not die in this way and this way, this way." All the promises of Brahmā kept. He appeared in such a form that it will not clash with the promise of Brahmā. Therefore He had to take the form of such a thing which does not clash with the promise. > That is God. He can nullify any law. He can introduce any new law. And nobody has got experience that stone thrown on the water floating. No one has got... Naturally, it goes down. But this is God, that He nullifies the general law, as He desires. *Sarva-śakti-sampannaḥ.* That is all-powerful. That is greatness. Not that if you have got a small body and the elephant has got a very big body, therefore he is great. No. That is not greatness. The elephant, in spite of having such a big body and thousand times stronger than the human being, he is controlled by a small human being. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 13.4](spoken/1973/730927bg.bom)** > Therefore Kṛṣṇa very much appreciates, "Oh, these people are doing on My behalf. I haven't got to go there. They have taken up My business." What we are taking business? We are simply asking people, "Please surrender to Kṛṣṇa." That's all. Therefore we are very dear. Kṛṣṇa says, *na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ*. Our business is how to become recognized by Kṛṣṇa. We don't, I mean to say, bother whether one is converted or not in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Our duty is to flatter, that's all. "My dear sir, please come here, see Kṛṣṇa's Deity, offer *namaskāra,* take *prasāda* and go home." But people are not agreeing. Because why? Now, this business cannot be taken up by persons who are full of sinful activities. > So therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *sa ca ya yat prabhāvaś ca.* That *prabhāva* means according to the modes of material nature. *Kāraṇaṁ guṇa-sango 'sya sad-asad-janma-yoniṣu*.* Why one is born in the family of demigod? Why one is born in the family of a hog? Why one is born in the family of a tree or a serpent? There are so many species of life. The only reason is *kāraṇaṁ guṇa-sango 'sya.* The living entity, as he associates with the *guṇa...* There are three *guṇas.* Multiply three by three, it becomes nine, and multiply nine by nine, it becomes eighty-one. Therefore there are eighty-four..., 8,400,000. This is *guṇa.* --- **[1974: Arrival Talk](spoken/1974/740927ar.may)** > Therefore our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is very serious movement, scientific movement, and people are gradually trying to understand the importance of this movement. Because in the foreign countries, especially in America, our books are being accepted by higher circle, big, big universities, colleges, professors. They are so eager to read the books that they have simply heard that this *Bhāgavatam* will be finished in sixty volumes and *Caitanya-caritāmṛta* will be finished in twelve volumes... We have got *Caitanya-caritāmṛta* only one volume published, and they are ordering for twelve volumes, that "As soon as it is published, you send us." This is very encouraging. Similarly, they are ordering for sixty volumes of *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* although we have published only twelve volumes. So by the grace of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, as He wanted... > People, unfortunately, they have no sense what is spiritual life, the modern civilization. They do not know that we have to change this body, as it is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā, tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ*. J*ust like animals, cats and dogs, they do not know that they have to change the body or they are not the body, they are beyond, something. This is the modern civilization. They try to make the best use of a bad bargain in this way, that "We have got this body. Let us enjoy senses to the utmost." But that is not the fact. Sense enjoyment means infection of the material modes of nature. That is sense enjoyment. Just like we infect some disease, and that disease will come out some day, will be manifested. They are called *kūṭastha, phalonmukha* and *prārabdha.* Three stages. Infection... The same example. Infection remains in dormant stage, not manifest immediately. Then *phalonmukha,* fructifying; and then *prārabdha,* one gets it and suffers. This is the nature's way, going on. But people do not know it. --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.19](spoken/1974/740927sb.cal)** > At that time, when you are fixed up in devotional service. At that time, *tadā.* Not otherwise. If you have no connection with devotional service, if you are attached to *karma, jñāna, yoga,* you cannot be fixed up. Therefore *Caitanya-caritāmṛta* says, *bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kāmī sakali aśānta*. Here we require... *Tadā, sthitaṁ sattve prasīdati. Prasīdati* means peace of mind, fully satisfied. But *bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kāmī.* As Caitanya Mahāprabhu... They cannot have peace of mind. It is not possible. *Bhukti* means *karmīs.* They're trying to enjoy this material—more money, more woman, more eating—more, more and more. That is called *bhukti.* They are not satisfied by enjoying on this planet. They perform various kinds of *yajñas* so that they may be promoted to the higher planetary systems, Svargaloka, or Janaloka, Maharloka, like that. But Kṛṣṇa says, *ābrahma-bhuvanāl lokāḥ.* "You rascal, you are trying to be promoted to the higher planetary system for more and more material enjoyment..." Certainly there is thousands and thousand times more material comforts in the heavenly planets, in the Candraloka. In the Candraloka... They are trying to go into Candraloka, but according to *śāstra,* if one goes to Candraloka, he gets ten thousands of years his duration of life, and enjoy. > So certainly there are many times more comfortable life, standard of life, very, very high, in the heavenly, other planetary systems. But Kṛṣṇa says that in any one of the planet you can go, but the material disease will not be relieved, the material disease, *janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi*. We cannot understand. This is our real disease: repetition of birth, *janma,* and repetition of death. *Janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi.* And repetition of becoming old, and *vyādhi,* repetition of being affected by various types of disease. So therefore intelligent man should see that "Even if I go to the Brahmaloka..." When Brahmā was asked by Hiraṇyakaśipu, "Give me immortality, sir," he said, "I am myself not immortal. How can I give you immortality?" So *ābrahma-bhuvanāl lokāḥ punar āvartino 'rjuna*. Kṛṣṇa advised Arjuna, "My dear Arjuna, if you go to the Brahmaloka, many millions of years' duration of life, still, you have to die." --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750927mw.ahm)** > [Hindi] This is the first instruction. [Hindi] This is the first instruction. [Hindi] This is the first to be given up in order to understand spiritual knowledge. [Hindi] So how you can expect tranquility and peacefulness if the society is conducted by *go-khara*? This is the defect.* [Hindi] This is the rule, nature's law. And if it is a fact... It is a fact. You believe or not believe; that is a different thing. [Hindi] Professor Kotovsky... > "Swāmījī, after death, everything is finished." He said like that. And he is a big professor of Indology. [Hindi]...*sa eva go-kharaḥ. He is a professor. [long Hindi conversation] Thank you very much. Hare Kṛṣṇa. --- **[1975: Room Conversation in Hindi](spoken/1975/750927r1.ahm)** > How he is put into such different bodies is explained here. It is due to association with the different modes of nature. One has to rise, therefore, above the three material modes and become situated in the transcendental position. That is called Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Unless one is situated in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, his material consciousness will oblige him to transfer from one body to another because he has material desires since time immemorial. But he has to change that conception. That change can be effectedaffected only by hearing from authoritative sources. The best example is here: Arjuna is hearing the science of God from Kṛṣṇa. The living entity, if he submits to this hearing process, will lose his long-cherished desire to dominate material nature, and gradually and proportionately, as he reduces his long desire to dominate, he comes to enjoy spiritual happiness. In a Vedic mantra it is said that as he becomes learned in association with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he proportionately relishes his eternal blissful life. > [Transl. This body is a bag made up of mucus, bile and air. Those who are consider this body as self, *sa eva go-kharaḥ*, animal. So how you can become happy in the society of '*go-khara*' [cows and asses]? Bring some big dogs and tell them, 'Dear boy, Do not bark, sit here quietly.' will that rascal remain so? He is after all a dog! [laughs]. Similarly we have this UNESCO which is trying to promote peace programs for the last thirty years, they are all barking only. What peace can they bring about? It is not in their nature to remain peaceful. And God is telling us the program for peace, --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.6](spoken/1975/750927sb.ahm)** > And at that time we can see all the living entities with equal vision. *Paṇḍita sama-darśinaḥ* When one is in actual knowledge, self realized, he sees the soul in every living entity. He doesn't see the outer covering of the body, that he is a human being, he is an animal, he is a *brāhmaṇa*, he is a dog. No, he does not see the body of a dog nor does he see the body of a *brāhmaṇa*. He sees the pure spirit soul, this is called *Brahma-darśana* [realisation of spirit]. We should reach to this position, that is the purpose of human beings. We can adhere to religious principles only in the human form of life, not in any other forms of life lower than the human form. That is why there is a religion for the human beings only not for the animals. If we give up adhering to religious principles, then we become animals. *dharmeṇa hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ* [*Hitopadeśa* 25] *brāhmaṇa*, *kṣatriya*, *vaiśya* and *śūdra*. > Arcanaṁ*. You go the temple and pay your obeisances to the Lord, watch the *ārati*, someone rings the bell, someone dances, sings, all this goes into your account, *sukṛti*, this is called *sukṛti*: pious credit. We must accumulate this *sukṛti*. By accumulating piety, just like you collect paisa by paisa and after some time you will find it has become two thousand or four thousand rupees. Then it is substantial, a penny is not enough but if you collect little by little then one day it will become two or four thousand rupees and it will be of some use to you. Similarly this *sukṛti*, you keep accumulating it, S*v-alpam apy asya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt*. So this pious credit of devotional service if you collect little by little, then one day you will be able to overcome the greatest dangers. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.7.32–33](spoken/1976/760927sb.vrn)** > So according to Vedic system, the government has to look after about the ultimate goal of life also. The modern government, they are anxious to give material comforts, but formerly the aim was to..., how to educate people for spiritual advancement of life. Therefore the society was divided into four higher and lower divisions: *brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, śūdra.* You cannot make one class of men. That is not very good arrangement. There must be different departments according to capacity. You cannot engage a *śūdra* in a *brāhmaṇa's* position, neither you can engage a *brāhmaṇa* in the *śūdra's* position. But every one of them should be cooperating. Not that everyone has got the same capacity. Combinedly, they should make progress, and that progress is *yajña. Yajña. Yajña* means how to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead Viṣṇu, Lord Viṣṇu. Lord Viṣṇu's another name is Yajña-pati, Yajñeśvara. So in the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is clearly stated... [coughing] Water. Hmm. [water cup is empty, and someone has to go to fill it] Another rascaldom. While drinking water they have to take. *Yajñārthāt karmaṇo 'nyatra loko 'yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ*. People have to be trained up to work for Yajña. *Yajñārtha.* If you do not act for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord, *yajñārthe, yajñārthe karma,* otherwise *karma-bandhanaḥ:* you become bound up or conditioned by your work. > Kevalam.* You cannot rectify all these difficulties, because this is the age for all these difficulties. You must know it. They are trying to mitigate all these difficulties in different ways, but *śāstra* says that it is not possible. Only, it is possible only by chanting the *harer nāma,* the holy name of the Lord. The holy name of the Lord is Kṛṣṇa, Rāma. So other names are there, but they are subordinate. Not subordinate; there is no question of "superior" or "inferior" in the holy name of the Lord. But we have to pick up the order of the *śāstras. Tasmād śāstra-vidhānokta.* As the *śāstra* gives regulative, we have to accept that. And if we do not accept that, *yaḥ śāstra-vidhim utsṛjya vartate kāma-kārataḥ*, if we do whimsically, then *na siddhiṁ savāpnoti,* you cannot get any perfection of life; *na sukham,* neither you'll be happy. --- ## Letters on September 27 *Letters from this day: 17* --- **[1967: Letter to Devananda](letters/1967/670927_devananda)** > Your nice letter with deep regard for Guru is quite appropriate.
