# September 7 ## Spoken on September 7 *Lectures from this day: 12 recordings* --- **[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 6.11–21](spoken/1966/660907bg.ny.md)** > Now, what is the sign that one has attained perfection in *yoga*? The Lord says, *yadā viniyataṁ cittam. Cittam* means your heart or your consciousness. When it is self-controlled, consciousness completely under your control, you do not become dependent on the dictation of your mind, but mind becomes under your control... *Yadā viniyataṁ cittam ātmany evāvatiṣṭhate.* And mind does not go out. Because the *yogī's* principal business is to think of Kṛṣṇa or Viṣṇu always. So *yogī* cannot allow his mind to go out. > So now, that one who is in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, he gets the opportunity of the highest *yoga* system, but he hasn't got to take the trouble of the process. That is the beauty of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Here the whole thing is coming down, the Lord says *mac-cittaḥ.* The mind should be engaged in Viṣṇu. The *yogī,* the real *yogī,* who goes to the forest, to the secluded place, he thinks of the *catur-bhuja* Viṣṇu. That will be explained here. --- **[1969: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.19 [with German Translator](spoken/1969/690907sb.ham)** > Now, here is the solution of problem, as Kṛṣṇa says in the fourteenth verse, Seventh Chapter, of *Bhagavad-gītā:* "It is very difficult to surmount the problems offered by the laws of material nature, but one who surrenders unto Me, he overcomes." Therefore we are teaching this Kṛṣṇa consciousness to solve the problems of life. It is not sentiment or fanaticism or any sectarian religion. It is a fact that if you want to solve the problems of life, you have to become Kṛṣṇa conscious. There is no other alternative. > So, this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement will produce good father and mother, and therefore they will have good children, and there will be no problem in the world. If everyone is Kṛṣṇa conscious... Not everyone; even ten percent people become Kṛṣṇa conscious, there will be no problem. Problem is created due to bad children. That is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā: varṇa-saṅkara*. So if there are good children, there is no problem. Even in this material world, everything will become happy. --- **[1971: Initiation Lecture](spoken/1971/710907in.lon)** > Nobody wants to become old; he's becoming old. Nobody wants to take birth... Of course, that is very higher stage. *Jñānī,* they want *mukti;* that is also not possible. Otherwise why Kṛṣṇa says, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante*? To stop death, to stop birth is not possible unless one comes to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Unless one [sic] does not come to the position of loving Kṛṣṇa, there's no question of freedom. That is the nature's law. > So it is not the aim of human life to become a tiger. It is..., the aim of human life is to become a devotee of Viṣṇu, Vaiṣṇava. That is perfection of life. So we are, this movement, we are giving the highest benediction to the human society. They are becoming Vaiṣṇava. There is great necessity of Vaiṣṇava at the present moment, because everyone has become *śūdras. Kalau śūdra sambhava.* And because it is, everywhere, the *śūdras* are there, how there can be peace? They do not know. They have no brain how to make the society peaceful and prosperous. They are *śūdras.* They have no intelligence. There is necessity of creating *brāhmaṇas* and Vaiṣṇava. This movement is meant for that purpose. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 18.41 Uppsala Student Assembly](spoken/1973/730907bg.sto)** > Therefore, in the human society, because there are three modes of material nature, the classification should be made scientifically, according to these three modes of material nature. And that is explained by Bhagavān, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, in the *Bhagavad-gītā, cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭam*, four classes of men: *brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya* and *śūdra. Brāhmaṇa* means the most intelligent class of men who can understand even up to the knowledge of Brahman, *brahma jānāti iti brāhmaṇa.* And the second class are the *kṣatriyas,* or the administrative class of men, and the third-class are the mercantile class of men, industrialists, traders, agriculturalists. Everything will be explained. And the fourth-class men means workers. They have no intelligence, but they find out some good master and get some money. That's all. So there are four classes. So here Kṛṣṇa says, > So Kṛṣṇa says that these three modes of material nature is current all over the universe, even in the topmost planet down to the lowest planet. Therefore he says, *na tad asti pṛthivyāṁ vā divi deveṣu vā punaḥ. Pṛthivyām* means on this earth, or in the other higher planetary system or even the heavenly planets. Everywhere. *Sattvaṁ prakṛti-jair muktam.* Nowhere anyone is free from the influence of these modes of material nature. *Sattvam* means existence. *Sattvaṁ prakṛti-jaiḥ. Prakṛti-jaiḥ* means by the material nature, *guṇaiḥ,* means the modes, this goodness, passion and ignorance. *Yad ebhiḥ syāt tribhir guṇaiḥ.* --- **[1973: Lecture at Uppsala University Faculty Bhagavad-gītā 13.1](spoken/1973/730907le.sto)** > So *Vedānta* means to know the Absolute Truth, God. That is explained in the *Bhagavad-gītā, vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyaṁ vedānta-vid veda-kṛd ca aham*. Kṛṣṇa says that "By all Vedic knowledge, ultimately one must come to the point of knowing God." Therefore another name of God is Brahman, Para-brahman. So *brāhmaṇa, brāhmaṇa* means one who knows Brahman. That is called *brāhmaṇa.* A *brāhmaṇa* is not a class which is to be found in India only. No. Anyone who knows God, who knows the Para-brahman, he is *brāhmaṇa. Brahma jānātīti brāhmaṇaḥ.* > But when Arjuna saw it that friendly talking will not make any solution of the problem, so at that time, he surrendered to Kṛṣṇa, that "I become Your disciple," *śiṣyas te 'ham śādhi māṁ [tvāṁ] prapannam,* "and I surrender unto You." That is the relationship between teacher and the student. The student must receive knowledge submissively, not by challenge. Therefore, one has to select a teacher where one can submit. That is the process. *Tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā*. Teacher must be approached with submission. *Tad viddhi praṇipātena. Praṇipāt* means submission; and *paripraśnena,* then question; and *sevayā,* and service also. These three things are the basic principle of receiving knowledge. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.1–2](spoken/1973/730907sb.sto)** > Just like one man is murdered. That murdering is committed by one man, but if has got many associates who has induced him, who has supplied him the weapon, or giving—so many assisted—all of them are arrested. This is the law. As we have got law here, here we can escape man-made laws, but you cannot escape God-made laws. That is not possible. Man-made laws sometimes we escape because everything made by man, that is insufficient, imperfect. So you can escape sometimes. That is not escaping. But you cannot escape God's law. *Īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe 'rjuna tiṣṭhati*. God is situated within your heart. He's seeing everything, and recording, *anumantā upadraṣṭā.* You cannot escape. > So we are opening many centers all over the world. Why? To give people chance for having this association of a Vaiṣṇava, *mahat, mahātmā.* Therefore those who are in charge of such centers, they must be ideal *mahātmās. Mahātmā* means devotees. *Mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ bhajanty ananya-manaso*. --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.2.3](spoken/1975/750907sb.vrn)** > So about this Ajāmila, these Yamadūtas, they came to take him away to Yamarāja, but the Viṣṇudūtas said, "No. He is not to be taken away. He is now cleansed of all sinful activities. You do not know that; therefore you are not giving him justice." So *yatrādaṇḍyeṣv apāpeṣu daṇḍo yair dhriyate vṛthā* : "One who is not punishable, if he is punished, that is injustice. So you should not take him away. He is not punishable." Yamarāja is there for punishing the sinful men. So all of them are not sinful. There are many pious men. Sinful men, they are of small number. So one must be very cognizant of justice. Just like in the prison house the number of prisoners are not greater than the number of free persons. That is natural. Although this material world is mixed—sinful men and pious men—still, at least formerly, there were sinful men less. It is said in the *śāstra* that in Satya-yuga there was no sinful men at all. All pious men. Then, in Tretā-yuga, one-fourth sinful and three-fourths pious. And then, Dvāpara-yuga, half and half. And now, in the Kali-yuga, one-fourth pious and three-fourths sinful. And that will also gradually diminish. And when everyone will be sinful, then there is no more preaching. There is Kalki *avatāra,* simply cutting the head. That's all. What is that verse? That Kalki *avatāra... Keśava dhṛta-kalki-śarīra jaya jagadīśa hare.* > So this is the process. Therefore the government, the father, the *guru* and the guardian—the everyone should try to make his dependent how he becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious. This is the duty. Therefore the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is so important, because the human life is meant for stopping the cycle of birth and death. *Na mocayed yaḥ samupeta-mṛtyum*. This is the only process. You cannot stop... But they do not know that this birth and death can be stopped. They are so rascal, they are so foolish, that they do not believe, neither they believe in the next birth, neither they have any idea how to stop death or stop next birth. No education. Throughout the whole world there is no education, there is no science. They are callous. Therefore in the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is said, *mūḍhā.* --- **[1976: Garden Conversation](spoken/1976/760907g1.vrn)** > So, those whose inteligence has been spoiled, they worship the demigods. The person whose knowledge has been stolen and who worships Kālī, he has become God! The *śāstra* declares that such person's intelligence is polluted and he has become God! This is going on. Who will understand all this? This should be considered. Actually those who sincerely follow the path given by the *ācāryas* they are safe. This is what we preach. And some interested persons join. We don't talk nonsense or manufacture gold or do things like that. Chant the holy name of Hari. *Kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam*. Just accept it. That's all.] > mām evaiṣyasi asaṁśayaḥ* [Transl. By giving up this simple path why follow other paths? *Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto,* the Supreme Lord Himself is speaking. "Think of Me." What is the difficulty? Now all these people have come and they are seeing the form of the Lord. So naturally there will be remembrance. If someone daily goes to the temple and sees the Lord then automatically *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto*, will be accomplished. Gradually. Then one more thing is to offer obeisances. *Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto. Mad-yāji*, if one is capable then offer worship. How to worship? The Lord has said patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ*. --- **[1976: Garden Conversation](spoken/1976/760907g2.vrn)** > We know even in October sometimes there are rains. Because the Durgā-Pūjā takes place in October. From our childhood we have experience. During Durgā-Pūjā there was raining, fog. --- **[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/760907r1.vrn)** > So the punishment is there, but the reward is also there. One life makes pardoned. *Tat te 'nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam*. Therefore a devotee in a reverse condition of life, he understands that "I am punished, little punished for my previous mischievous activities. So now I am becoming liberated." So he becomes more enthused to worship the Lord, that "You are finishing my sinful reaction of life with slight punishment. Thank you very much." This is devotee. *Tat te 'nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇaḥ.* > These persons who are committing sinful life—don't say anyone [laughs] or publish—there will be trouble. But that's a fact. Those who are living in Vṛndāvana and acting like monkey, they'll get next life a monkey, to remain in Vṛndāvana, and then next life they will be liberated. In one life all their sinful activities will be punished. Because as soon as animal life is obtained, there is no more further record of the sinful life. The animals cannot make sinful activities more than what is destined by him. But their sinful activity is not taken into account. For this man who is offered this monkey's body, he suffers the inconvenience of monkey life. So his sinful activities are counteracted, and because he came to Vṛndāvana and lived in Vṛndāvana by the mercy of Rādhārāṇī, next life he will be... That is the glory of Vṛndāvana-dhāma. Otherwise, what is the explanation of these dogs and hogs and monkeys in Vṛndāvana? If it is *dhāma-aparādha,* committing offense in *dhāma... Dhāma-aparādha.* As *dhāma-bhajana,* if one undergoes devotional service out of Vṛndāvana and one executes devotional service in Vṛndāvana, that is hundred times better. Similarly, *dhāma-aparādha* also. This *aparādha,* when offense is committed outside Vṛndāvana, that is not so grievous as committing offense in Vṛndāvana. *Dhāma-aparādha.* --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.7.8](spoken/1976/760907sb.vrn)** > So this *saṁhitā... Saṁhitā* means Vedic literature. There are many rascals, they say that *Bhāgavata* was not written by Vyāsadeva; it was written by some Bopadeva. They say like that, Māyāvādīs, the Nirīśvaravādī. Because although Nirīśvaravādī, or Māyāvādī leader, Śaṅkarācārya, he wrote comments on *Bhagavad-gītā,* but he could not touch *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* because in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* the things are so nicely set up, *kṛtvānukramya,* that it is not possible by the Māyāvādīs to prove that God is impersonal. They cannot do it. Nowadays they are doing, reading *Bhāgavatam* in their own way, but that does not appeal to any sane man. Sometimes I have seen a big Māyāvādī is explaining one verse from *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* that "Because you are God, therefore if you are pleased, then God is pleased." This is their philosophy. "You do not require to please God separately. So if you are pleased by drinking wine, then God is pleased." This is their explanation. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu has condemned this Māyāvādī commentary. Caitanya Mahāprabhu has said, *māyāvādi-bhāṣya śunile haya sarva-nāśa*. Māyāvādī kṛṣṇe aparādhī.* He has plainly said, no compromise. The Māyāvādīs, they're great offender to Kṛṣṇa. *Tān ahaṁ dviṣataḥ krūrān,* Kṛṣṇa also says. They're very, very envious to Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is *dvi-bhuja-muralīdhara, śyāmasundara,* and the Māyāvādī explains that "Kṛṣṇa has no hand, no leg. This is all imagination." How much offensive it is they do not know. But to warn people like us, Caitanya Mahāprabhu has plainly warned that "Don't go to Māyāvādīs." *Māyāvādi-bhāṣya śunile haya sarva-nāśa. Māyāvādī haya kṛṣṇe aparādhī.* This is the statement of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. > So Śukadeva Gosvāmī is the next *ācārya,* but one has to learn from the original *ācārya. Evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ*. So unless we come to the *paramparā* system, *ācārya* after *ācārya,* there is no right education. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu's private secretary, personal secretary, Svarūpa Dāmodara, he advised, *bhāgavat paṛa giyā bhāgavat sthāne.* If you want to learn *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* you go to a person whose life is *Bhāgavatam. Grantha bhāgavata* and person *bhāgavata—*both of them *bhāgavatas.* So *bhāgavat paṛa giyā bhāgavat sthane.* One whose life is *Bhāgavatam* and nothing else, you should learn *Bhāgavatam* from him, not from the professional person who are earning livelihood by reading or reciting *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.* That will not be effective. You have to find out like a Śukadeva Gosvāmī. Then this study of *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* will be effective. --- ## Letters on September 7 *Letters from this day: 30* --- **[1968: Letter to Sivananda](letters/1968/680907_sivananda)** > I also had a letter from the Finnish boy sent by you and it appears that he is enthusiastic.
