## Spoken on September 2
*Lectures from this day: 8 recordings*

**[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 6.1–4](spoken/1966/660902bg.ny.md)**
> So here, how that full knowledge is exhibited after *sannyāsa,* that is explained here by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. What is that? "It is my duty to become Kṛṣṇa conscious and to serve the cause of Kṛṣṇa. Oh, that is my duty. That is my real duty." When we come to this knowledge, then we become *mahātmā,* or the great soul. *Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ.* You'll find in the *Bhagavad-gītā. Bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate* : "After many, many births, when a person, when a soul, is perfectly elevated to the platform of real knowledge, transcendental knowledge," then what does he do? "He surrenders unto Me," Kṛṣṇa says. "He surrenders unto Me." *Bās...* Why?
> Now, *vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti*, "You are everything, Vāsudeva." Vāsudeva means Kṛṣṇa. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. But Kṛṣṇa says, "Such...," *sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ,* "such great soul is very scarce, rarely found." But any intelligent person, if he understands this philosophy, that "My ultimate goal of life is to surrender unto Kṛṣṇa. Why not surrender immediately? Why shall I wait?" *Bahūnāṁ janmanām ante.* "Why shall I wait for so many births?" So that stage is called real *sannyāsa.*

**[1970: Vaiṣṇava Calendar Description](spoken/1970/700902r1.cal)**
> The next important day is on the 26th, no, 12th September, 12th September, 1970, the advent day of Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī Prabhu. [pause] On that day there are three functions. First of all, Ekādaśi, a special Ekādaśi called Pārśvaika Ekādaśi. Then on that day, actually, Ekādaśi according to calendar, Ekādaśi was to be observed on the 11th September, but because the next day is Vāmana Dvādaśī.... Vāmana Dvādaśī means the advent of Lord Vāmanadeva. Therefore we have fast, Ekādaśi fasting, and we observe two fastings in one day, Ekādaśi and Vāmanadeva, Vāmana Dvādaśī. The same process as we observe Ekādaśi, and the evening there should be a meeting discussing on the life and work of Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī. He is one of the very important *ācāryas* in our *sampradāya*, so especially his *Sandarbhas* should be discussed.
> That means Lord Caitanya encouraged him that "Don't be discouraged that this is bad, or this is not fit. I can eat, anyone can eat." In this way Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī was elevated to a very exalted position amongst the Gosvāmīs. He is known as Dāsa Gosvāmī because he belonged to the *kāyastha* family and other Gosvāmīs, they belonged to *brāhmaṇa* families. Therefore, in order to keep his position as subordinate to the *brāhmaṇas*, he was known as Dāsa Gosvāmī. But it does not make any difference whether a *brāhmaṇa* is a Gosvāmī or a non-*brāhmaṇa* is a Gosvāmī, he is equally respected.

**[1972: Interview with the New York Times [Back to Godhead Article](spoken/1972/720902iv.nv)**
> When we speak of Kṛṣṇa, we mean God. Everyone has some vague idea of God, but no clear idea. Therefore God descends to show what He is.
---
**[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 2.32](spoken/1973/730902bg.lon)**
> So ideal state means the king must be very responsible. There are many instances. Just like Yudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja, he was a pious king. In Bengali there is a proverb, *rājāra doṣe rājya naṣṭa, rājya naṣṭa, gṛhiṇīra doṣe gṛhastha bhraṣṭa.* If the king is not pious, then the whole kingdom is spoiled. Similarly, if the housewife is not good, the whole family is spoiled. Everyone has got this experience. So the king must be very honest, pious, religious. Therefore they are called *rājarṣi.* Although they are king, but they are just like saintly person. Just like Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira. They were saintly, *rājarṣi. Imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ*.
> Sometimes we are accused that we go to preach amongst the richer section. The richer section... Of course, there is no king, but actually this *Bhagavad-gītā* was meant for the richer section who used to control—the kings. Because if the king is educated nicely in spiritual affair, if he knows what is the purpose of kingdom, what is the purpose of ruling, then all the citizens automatically become religious, purposeful. And if the king is a rascal, the leader is a rascal, naturally all others will follow, and they will become rascals. Therefore in the *Bhagavad-gītā,* in the Fourth Chapter, you'll find that Kṛṣṇa was teaching, first off, *imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam*. He taught this philosophy to the sun-god. There are two *kṣatriya* families—*sūrya-vaṁśa* and *candra-vaṁśa.* One family's coming from the sun-god, another family's coming from the moon god. So Kṛṣṇa said, because sun was the principal man in the *kṣatriya* family of *sūrya-vaṁśa,* so he was taught first.

**[1973: Room Conversation with Indian Guests](spoken/1973/730902r1.lon)**
> And now you have to possess little knowledge. Just like Kṛṣṇa says... How Kṛṣṇa is perfect, Kṛṣṇa is giving example, side by side: *Yathā, dehino 'smin yathā dehe*. Asmin dehe,* as there is the soul, there is the soul, *asmin dehe,* and he's having different types of bodies, *kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā,* he's changing body from childhood, boyhood, boyhood to youthhood, youthhood to another state. *Tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ.* Where is the illogical presentation? This is scientific. For an intelligent man, this is scientific. And if he's still dull-headed, then what can be done?
> Therefore we see such examples, that one saintly person is living in the Himalayan mountain: there is snowfall, there is no proper place, still they live. Still, there are many. But nowadays it is not possible. Voluntarily, they used to go to the forest, to the Himalaya, just to tolerate these pains and pleasure of the body equally and engaged in their own business of spiritual understanding. That is human civilization. Human civilization, that is described in the..., *tapo divyam.* For the supreme spiritual realization one should undergo *tapasya. Nāyaṁ deho deha-bhājāṁ nṛloke kaṣṭān kāmān arhate viḍ-bhujāṁ ye*.

**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.66](spoken/1975/750902sb.vrn)**
> So he became sinful because he left his married wife and he became attracted with a *śūdrāṇī* immediately. That has been described in the previous verse, *visasarjācirāt pāpaḥ*. Pāpaḥ* means sinful man. He became sinful immediately. Therefore we stress on marriage. They cannot understand why this Association stresses so much for marriage, not to live... They live as friend; that is *śūdra.* There is no legal marriage, *śūdra* and *śūdrāṇī.* Just like he was living with the *śūdrāṇī*—he was not married—as friend. So even *śūdra's* marriage there is. For the *śūdra* there is one *āśrama—*that is *gṛhastha āśrama.* And for the *brāhmaṇas,* four *āśramas: brahmacārī, gṛhastha, vānaprastha, sannyāsa.* This is for the *brāhmaṇas.* For the *kṣatriyas: brahmacārī, gṛhastha, vānaprastha.* For the *vaiśya: brahmacārī* and *gṛhastha.* And for the no *brahmacārī,* only family life, and that also sometimes without marriage. This is the low grade, first grade, second grade.
> Therefore *kṣatriya* can levy tax because he gives protection. And a *brāhmaṇa,* he elevates the society to spiritual standard. Then simply protection and advancing in spiritual life will not do. We must have food also. So that is *vaiśya's* business. *Kṛṣi-gorakṣya-vāṇijyaṁ vaiśya-karma svabhāva-jam*. The *vaiśyas* should produce food. *Annād bhavanti bhūtāni*. Unless people eat, how they will live? Simply becoming king for levying tax and simply becoming *brāhmaṇa* to teach how to worship, but if you have no food, then what you will do? There must be arrangement for food. That is entrusted to the *vaiśyas.* In this way this is classification. Not by birth one becomes *brāhmaṇa,* and working less than a *śūdra,* and he is still *brāhmaṇa.* This is not... This is nonsense. One must be *guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ*. The society is divided according to the quality he is working, accordingly.

> No, you could not. [break] *Uktas tathā bhāvyata eva sadbhiḥ kintu prabhor yaḥ priya eva tasya:* "The spiritual master is as good as God because he's very dear to Kṛṣṇa." He's preaching Kṛṣṇa's mission, and Kṛṣṇa is very, very pleased with him. *Na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ* [[bg/18/69|[Bg.

> So far installing deity in your home is concerned, better to wait until you move into the temple when you are little older. Meanwhile try and attend to the temple as often as you are able, and always without fail daily chant 16 rounds and follow the four prohibitive restrictions, and in due course of time you will feel yourself becoming happier more and more in Krishna Consciousness.
