# August 28 ## Spoken on August 28 *Lectures from this day: 5 recordings* --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.25](spoken/1972/720828sb.la)** > Therefore, in the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is said, *yajante anya-devatāḥ. Kāma, kā...* What is that? *Hṛta-jñānāḥ. Kāmais tais tair hṛta-jñānāḥ*.* We have read, we have discussed, that if you want, if you want to fulfill this desire, then you worship this demigod. If you want to be beautiful, then you worship Umā. If you want money, then you worship Prajāpati, the treasurer of the demigods, Kuvera. And in this way there are different recommendation. But the conclusion is that Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā* that *kāmais tais tair hṛta-jñānāḥ : this material *kāma,* lust, desires, for this purpose they go, they worship different demigods. > Kṣemāya kalpante ye 'nu tān iha.* That is our real benefit, *adhokṣaja.* In the beginning also of this chapter it is said, *sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje*. The same word, *adhokṣaje. Ahaituky apratihatā yayātmā suprasīdati.* If you want real happiness, then you engage yourself in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. *Kṣemāya.* Then you'll be happy. And if you take to other demigods, those who are material, that will be not your perfect happiness or permanent happiness. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 2.25](spoken/1973/730828bg.lon)** > Therefore Kṛṣṇa says here that you take care of the soul. *Tasmād evam. Tasmād evaṁ viditvā.* Just try to understand the soul is important. You haven't got to lament for this body. This is already settled up: so much suffering, so much comforts, you'll get. Although the body, material body... Because the material body is also created according to the three qualities. *Kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo 'sya sad-asad-janma-yoniṣu*.* When the inquiry is that why one has got the king's body and why he has got, one has got the pig's body—there are so many other bodies, 8,400,000 different types of bodies—so why the difference is there? That difference is explained in the *Bhagavad-gītā: kāraṇam. Kāraṇam* means cause. Why these varieties are..., *kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅga asya. Asya, jīvasya.* He is associating with different kinds of qualities, and therefore he's getting a different type of body. *Kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo 'sya.* > Kṛṣṇa says: Because the soul is immortal, therefore *tasmād evaṁ viditvā,* understanding of this principle, *enam,* this body, *na anuśocitum arhasi.* The real factor is the soul. We have to take care of the soul, not of the body. So far body is concerned, there are pains and pleasure like climatic changes. *Āgamāpāyinaḥ anityāḥ,* such bodily pains and pleasure come and go; they are not permanent. *Tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata.* So you have to learn how to tolerate these bodily pains and pleasure, but you have to take care of the soul. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.10.5](spoken/1973/730828sb.lon)** > So whose properties are this, the rivers, mountains, oceans and the forest? Whose property it is? It is Kṛṣṇa's property. *Bhoktāraṁ yajña-tapasāṁ sarva-loka-maheśvaram*.* Kṛṣṇa says, "I am the proprietor." *Sarva-loka-maheśvaram.* Not only this planet, but *sarva-loka,* all the planets, all the universes, He is the proprietor. And we are maybe that... Maintained. Actually, we are maintained. And the supply method is there. *Nadī,* the river is there, the mountain is there. Mountain, it does not stock water only, but from mountain you get so many minerals, huge quantity of minerals, jewels, gems. And from the *samudra,* or the ocean, and the seas you get large quantity of pearls and... What is called? *Muktā?* Pearls is *muktā.* Yes. And corals. Huge quantity. Simply because this material world... > Where you get the direction? *Sādhu-śāstra-guru-vākya.* You get Kṛṣṇa's direction from saintly persons, from authorized scriptures, Vedic literature—*sādhu, śāstra—*and *guru*. *Guru* means who knows how to follow previous saintly persons, who knows what is written there in the book of knowledge. He is *guru. Sādhu-śāstra-guru.* And *śāstra* means that the direction of Kṛṣṇa. That is called *śāstra.* Therefore Kṛṣṇa said, *yaḥ śāstra-vidhim utsṛjya vartate kāma-kārataḥ, na sa siddhim avāpnoti*. Therefore you cannot manufacture scripture. That is not possible. Therefore it is said, *dharmaṁ tu sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītam*. Śāstra,* scripture, means the words and the laws given by God. So what is the law? How can I know? *Bhagavad-gītā* is there. Why don't you take it? Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru*. --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750828mw.vrn)** > They are accepting this body as self. The whole trouble is there. So-called scientist, philosopher—everyone is thinking, "I am this body," and therefore there is so much trouble. They do not know what he is and what is his goal of life, how life should be molded. No knowledge. Therefore vigorous preaching is required. Our Caitanya Mahāprabhu's mission is that, that all people are suffering. There is little knowledge in India. So anyone who has taken his birth in India, he should make his life perfect by studying this Vedic literature and then spread the knowledge all over the world. Because they are in ignorance. Here also now they are ignorant. They do not know what is the value of life, thinking like cats and dogs. What is your idea about the value of life? --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.61](spoken/1975/750828sb.vrn)** > Dadarśa kāminaṁ kañcic chudram. Śūdram.* This business on the public way, kissing, embracing, this is meant for the *śūdras.* Therefore it is said, *kalau śūdrā-sambhavāḥ:* "In the Kali-yuga the population is all *śūdra*." There is no brahminical culture. Brahminical culture means *śama, dama,* controlling the mind, controlling the senses. A real *brāhmaṇa* will never agree to embrace the opposite sex in public way. No. That is not *brāhmaṇa's* business. He has been trained up how to become controller of the mind, controller of the senses. That is the first business of a *brāhmaṇa. Śama, dama, satyam.* He is truthful; *śaucam,* clean, thrice taking bath. > So this boy, Ajāmila, he was passing, he saw that the *śūdra* was embracing another *śūdrāṇī. Dṛṣṭvā tāṁ kāma-liptena.* When he saw that this man and woman is embraced with one another with lusty desire... Embracing woman or man, this is *kāma,* lust. There is no question of any other thing. *Kāma-liptena. Dṛṣṭvā tāṁ kāma-liptena bāhunā.* The man was embracing the woman, and the woman was embracing, *pari-liptena,* very closely attached, and everything was going on. Then... We have got lusty desires. Everyone's heart... *Hṛd-roga-kāma.* The material world means there is a heart disease which is called *kāma, hṛd-roga-kāma.* So *hṛc-chaya-avaśam.* If we... This is called impetus. If I see one engaged in lusty or sex affairs, naturally my sex desire also becomes awakened. Even though I am trying to control in the neophyte stage, still, if I see in my front something lusty affairs, naturally I will be inclined to such. Therefore it is called *avaśam.* He was student, *brahmacārī,* practicing *śama, dama, satyam, śaucam*. He was not very old man; he was young man. But he could not control. Therefore it is said, *hṛc-chaya-avaśam. Avaśam sahasaiva:* "all of a sudden," *vimohitam,* "he became very much attracted." --- ## Letters on August 28 *Letters from this day: 17* --- **[1968: Letter to Hitsaran Sharma](letters/1968/680828_hitsaran_sharma)** > Since a very long time I did not hear from you, and I do not know why you are silent. --- **[1968: Letter to Umapati](letters/1968/680828_umapati)** > You will be glad to know that I am starting for New York on the 31st instant at 4:30 p. --- **[1969: Letter to Dr. Nagendra Babu](letters/1969/690828_dr._nagendra_babu)** > I saw your daughter, Bhakti Devi, very much devoted to Krishna Consciousness, just befitting the position of a Vaisnava's daughter. This traveling in buses is the best means to drive away maya and establish Krishna consciousness all over the world. One thing is that I do not know how practical it is to carry deities in the truck, by the jarring of the vehicle there may be some damage and also I think that it is not possible to keep the top standard of worship, cleanliness, punctual offerings etc. We must be very careful about deity worship, if it is neglectful then it is very offensive and that will not help us, we should not do it simply for show. --- **[1975: Letter to Acarya Prabhakar Mishra](letters/1975/750828_acarya_prabhakar_mishra)** > I am enclosing herewith one invitation card to our Janmastami and Vyasa Puja Day celebration.
