# August 11 ## Spoken on August 11 *Lectures from this day: 14 recordings* --- **[1968: Initiations and Gāyatrī of Devotees Going to London](spoken/1968/680811in.mon)** > So one who is intelligent, as it is stated in the *Caitanya-caritāmṛta, kṛṣṇa ye bhaje se baḍa catura.* Unless one is perfectly intelligent and perfectly cleansed, one cannot take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So therefore *guru-kṛṣṇa kṛpā pāya bhakti-latā-bīja*. Kṛṣṇa is seated within everyone's heart. If we want Kṛṣṇa sincerely... And how we want Kṛṣṇa sincerely? That is the mercy of the spiritual master. Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*. > In the *Caitanya-caritāmṛta* it is said, *guru-kṛṣṇa kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja* : There shall be combined mercy of Kṛṣṇa and *guru.* Then our mission of Kṛṣṇa consciousness will be successful. This is the secret. Kṛṣṇa is always within you. *Īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe arjuna tiṣṭhati*. Therefore Kṛṣṇa knows everything of your purpose, and He gives you opportunity to work as you have decided. If you decide to enjoy this material world, Kṛṣṇa will give you intelligence how to become very nice businessman, very nice politician, very nice cunning man so that you can earn money and enjoy senses. Kṛṣṇa will give you intelligence. --- **[1971: Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.37](spoken/1971/710811bs.lon)** > So here the Lord Kṛṣṇa and Rādhārāṇī, that is the same Kṛṣṇa and Rādhārāṇī who are in the Goloka Vṛndāvana. It is simply expansion to give us facility to accept our service. I think I have given many times this example: Just like in front of your door there is a mailbox. That mailbox, although it appears to be small box, but it is Post Office. It is not different from Post Office. The practical example is that you place your letters within the box and it goes thousands and thousand miles away. Therefore it is Post Office. Don't think that it is different from the Post Office. > That technique is love of Godhead. If you learn, it doesn't matter what religion you profess. It is no concern. We do not say that "You become Hindu," "You become Muslim," or "Christian." No. We say that "You become lover of God." You learn how to love God. Your loving propensity is there, but it is being misplaced. It is placed on dog instead of God; therefore you are unhappy. When your loving propensity will be placed in the proper place, you will be happy. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness, love of Godhead. --- **[1972: Interview with Journalists "God is the proprietor, God is the enjoyer and God is the maintainer"](spoken/1972/720811iv.lon)** > Suppose if I give somebody intelligence, "You make this table like this," I give ingredients, I give him money, then after the table is manufactured, if the carpenter says, "It is mine," is that proper? "Sir, I have given you money, I have given you the wood, I have given you the intelligence, I have maintained you. How it belongs to you?" So this is going on. Everything God's, and we are claiming "mine." *Ahaṁ mameti, janasya moho 'yam*. This is called illusion. I am not the proprietor, but I am thinking I am. This is called illusion. > So Kṛṣṇa consciousness means to remove this illusion, to accept the real fact. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Kṛṣṇa consciousness is nothing that we [indistinct] manufactured artificially. To come to your real position. Just like a madman has got in some consciousness, he's thinking so many crazy ways. That sort of consciousness will not help us. If we actually come to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, that is our perfection. [break] God is the proprietor, God is the enjoyer and God is the maintainer. Three things. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 13.3](spoken/1973/730811bg.par)** > So myself, I am called *ātmā,* and Kṛṣṇa is called Paramātmā. Therefore there are two words: Paramātmā and *ātmā. Ātmā* is also individual. Paramātmā is also individual. But because both of us, we are knower, *kṣetrajña, vibha[?],* the living entity is *kṣetrajna,* he has got knowledge. And Kṛṣṇa says, *kṣetra-jñaṁ cāpi māṁ viddhi.* "I am also knower." Both of them, we are knower. We have got knowledge. My knowledge may be limited; Kṛṣṇa's knowledge unlimited, complete. But both of us, we are knower. We can understand. We can know. Therefore, we are called *kṣetrajña.* But the difference is, Kṛṣṇa knows everything all over the creation; I even do not know what is going on in my body. That is the difference. > So Kṛṣṇa says, *kṣetra-kṣetrajñayor jñānam.* One who knows how this *kṣetra* and *kṣetrajña* is working... Not only in individual body, in gigantic body, in everything, there are two things: *kṣetra* and *kṣetrajña.* If one knows this secret of knowledge, that means he is in perfect knowledge. *Taj-jñānam.* That is *jñānam.* Not that a big professor says that when after the finishing of this body, everything is finished. He's a rascal. He's identifying... Everyone is identifying, just like cats and dogs, with this body. The body is *kṣetra.* Body is not the person. A child in ignorance may say that this fine, nice motorcar is running automatically. But it is not running automatically. There is a driver. He does not know it. Similarly, the whole universal activities is going on. Don't think it is going on automatically. No, that is foolish knowledge, that nature is working automatically. No. There is *kṣetrajña,* Kṛṣṇa. *Sarva-kṣetreṣu bhārata.* Everywhere is Kṛṣṇa is working. --- **[1973: Room Conversation](spoken/1973/730811r1.par)** > These are the symptoms of *rajas-tamo-guṇa.* So then therefore we see that all people are lusty and greedy. So as soon as he becomes cleansed, come to the standard of goodness, these two qualities cannot affect him anymore. *Tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye*. One has to take the process. And it is simple process. Simple. > And that, that is actually happening, in our practical experience. "They say, they say..." They are all rascals, fools. They can say anything and everything. *Pāgale kinābale, chāgale kinā khāya.* In the Bengali it is said, "A madman, what does he not speak?" He speaks any nonsense. "And a goat, what does he not eat?" So if you keep a madman... They are keeping them mad... That is our protest, that why you are keeping all people mad, crazy, nonsense? And you are also teacher, university? They have no knowledge so what is the aim of life. That you have to protest. --- **[1974: Janmāṣṭamī, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa's Appearance Day Bhagavad-gītā 7.5](spoken/1974/740811bg.vrn)** > So there are so many theories, but Kṛṣṇa, the supreme life, the supreme being, is the source of everything. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate*. The..., this fact is known to the devotees. *Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ*. Kṛṣṇa is the source. Absolute Truth is Kṛṣṇa. In the *Vedānta-sūtra* the inquiry is, *athāto brahma-jijñāsā.* What is that Absolute Truth, the supreme source of everything? That supreme source is Kṛṣṇa. That is explained in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* in the beginning: *janmādy asya yataḥ anvayād itarataś ca artheṣu abhijñaḥ svarāṭ. Abhijñaḥ.* Kṛṣṇa is the supreme creator, and He knows everything, *anvaya-vyatirekābhyāṁ*, directly and indirectly. Both ways, He knows everything. He says also in *Bhagavad-gītā, vedāhaṁ samatītāni*. He knows everything. > Therefore if you are sensible, if you are actually wise, I mean, if you are actually advanced in knowledge, then you should surrender to Kṛṣṇa. This is the conclusion. We have to surrender. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante*. You have to [be] controlled. You cannot be independent. The more you become independent, you become more and more entangled. *Yajñārthe karma..., karmaṇi, anyatra karma-bandhanaḥ.* If you don't act for Yajña, Yajña-puruṣa, Kṛṣṇa, then you'll be entangled. So the best thing is if we become wise. Wise means... Kṛṣṇa says that "This is your position. You have to surrender unto Me. You did not surrender unto Me; therefore you are suffering so much in this material world." Today is Kṛṣṇa's birthday. He descends to give us instruction. *Paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām*. --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.5.30](spoken/1974/740811sb.vrn)** > This is *guru's* business. Do not manufacture anything. There is no question of... There is no need of manufacturing anything. Simply you speak to the suffering humanity the same thing which Kṛṣṇa says. *Sākṣād bhagavatā uditam.* This is the business of *guru.* It is clearly said. Nārada, he'll explain further in the next verses, how he became advanced. This verse is very important, that *jñānaṁ guhyatamaṁ yat tat.* Actually, perfect knowledge you can get from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and in *paramparā* system you get that knowledge. *Evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ*. > Therefore the most confidential part of knowledge is... Kṛṣṇa says that *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja.* That is the *guhyatamam, jñānaṁ guhyatamam.* The same thing, as it is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* Therefore *Bhagavad-gītā* is the preliminary study of *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.* One who has understood *Bhagavad-gītā* properly, he can understand what is *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.* Where *Bhagavad-gītā* ends... *Bhagavad-gītā,* teachings of *Bhagavad-gītā* ends at the point when Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja,* to surrender. And the *Bhāgavata* begins from that point. *Janmādy asya yataḥ..., satyaṁ paraṁ dhīmahi. Satyaṁ paraṁ dhīmahi.* Surrender. Otherwise, in the next paragraph of the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* in the beginning, *dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo 'tra* : "Except surrendering to Kṛṣṇa, there cannot be any religious system." The real religious system... Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja.* That is religion, to surrender to Kṛṣṇa. Otherwise, as it is stated in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo 'tra*. --- **[1975: Arrival Address](spoken/1975/750811ar.par)** > So anyway, on the material platform, there is no possibility of equality, fraternity or nothing. It is not possible. Unless you come to the spiritual platform, *brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā*, there is no question of equality, fraternity. So in the United Nation, they are trying for that unity, united nation, but where is unity? Every year there is a new flag. There is no question of fraternity or equality. Just like in animal life, there is no question of fraternity or equality. Similarly, if we keep ourself in the bodily concept of life, that is animal life. So long we keep ourself as "I am French man," "I am German man," "I am English man," "I am Indian man," or so many there are nationalities, there cannot be any fraternity, equality. We have come to the platform of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, or *brahma-bhūtaḥ,* then there will be fraternity, equality. And factually you can see in this movement all classes of men, all nationality, all religion, all color, they are coming together and chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa and dancing. This is wanted. > So now, by the grace of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, this movement has come to your country, and especially in a nice village like this, utilize it properly. It is a very ideal place. Not only this; there are many thousands of places like this. People should take advantage to live in such nice place, produce their necessities of life, and keep them fit and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and realize self. We don't say that you starve or become weak in health or weak in intelligence. No. You remain quite fit in intelligence and words. But don't be unnecessarily in need. The difficulty of the modern educated person is—not educated, but so-called educated—they are attracted in the city for so many things unnecessary. Just like the club, the restaurant, the liquor and the cigarette, so many things. But if your attention is diverted to Kṛṣṇa, you will not feel inclined to enjoy all these unnecessary things. That is the test of spiritual life, that *bhaktiḥ pareśānubhavo viraktir anyatra syāt*. Bhakti*, advancement of devotional life, means no more taste for all these nonsense. That is the test. --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto Six Dictation Chapter 12, Verse 24–35 Chapter 13, Verse 01–02](spoken/1975/750811dt.par)** > *nigīrṇaḥ*—swallowed up; *api*—although; *asura-indreṇa*—by the best of the *asuras,* Vṛtrāsura; *na*—not; *mamāra*—died; *udaram*—within the abdomen; *gataḥ*—although he was put into there; *mahā-puruṣa*—the Supreme Lord, Nārāyaṇa; *sannaddhaḥ*—being accomplished by the talisman known as Nārāyaṇa-kavaca; *yoga-māyā-balena*—as realized by the mystic power which Indra possessed himself; *ca*—although also. > Indra could understand that certainly he was entangled by sinful reaction of killing a *brāhmaṇa.* He could see how the sinful reaction personified was following him backward, and as such he fled out of fear here and there. He began to think of how to get rid of the sinful reaction. In this condition he went to Mānasa-sarovara, and there, being protected by the goddess of fortune, he meditated there for thousands of years. During this time, Nahuṣa reigned..., ruled over the heavenly planets as representative of Indra. Unfortunately, he became attracted by the beauty of Indra's wife, Śacīdevī; therefore on account of this sinful desire he had to accept the body of a serpent next life. In this way Indra later on performed a great sacrifice, taking help from big, big *brāhmaṇas*, saintly persons, and in this way he was relieved from the reaction of sinful life on account of killing a *brāhmaṇa.* --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.55](spoken/1975/750811sb.par)** > Hmm. In the previous verse it has been discussed, *na hi kaścit kṣaṇam api jātu tiṣṭhaty akarma-kṛt.* Nobody can... [child making sounds; mother takes out] Just like this child. He wants to do something. [laughter] He does not know that he is doing something nonsense. Similarly, the child's father also, he wants to do something, although it is nonsense. Therefore here it is mentioned, *na hi kaścit,* "Anyone," *kṣaṇam api,* "even for a moment," *na hi kaścit kṣaṇam api jātu tiṣṭhaty akarma*, "he must do something." This is the tendency. How? *Kāryate hy avaśaḥ. Avaśaḥ* means being forced. He has no control. He must do something, and he has no control over it. So why no control? No control means he is controlled by somebody else. He is not in his own control. And what is that controller? *Guṇaiḥ svābhāvikair balāt*. He has infected some type of material modes of nature and he has to act accordingly. *Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni.* The similar verse is there in the *Bhagavad-gītā. Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ*. > The purport is: human life is not meant for these things. Human life is meant for being elevated to the highest platform of good character and controlling the senses, controlling the mind, remain very clean. Then you can make progress and your life can become successful. So because they are not accustomed already to follow this, therefore so many rascals and dangerous *yogīs* are advertising that "There is no need of control. You can join this *yoga* system and give me money. I shall give you *mantra,* and you become God." Be careful of these dogs. --- **[1976: Evening Darśana](spoken/1976/760811ed.teh)** > Yes, that is so many times explained. Just like a child wants to do something. The father says, "Don't do it," I have said several times. --- **[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/760811r1.teh)** --- ## Letters on August 11 *Letters from this day: 17* --- **[1971: Letter to Bali Mardan](letters/1971/710811_bali_mardan)** > So far your engagement is concerned, you should concentrate on the Australian side. --- **[1971: Letter to Gargamuni](letters/1971/710811_gargamuni)** > I am so much encouraged to learn that you have come to Kathmandu, Nepal.
