## Spoken on August 3
*Lectures from this day: 15 recordings*

**[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 4.19](spoken/1966/660803bg.ny.md)**
> So these things have to be studied very scientifically and from books like *Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* and when he is perfectly learned, then his symptom is that he becomes a, a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa. *Ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate* : "I am the source, fountainhead," Kṛṣṇa says. "I am the source and fountainheadlike, of everything. One who understands this science, then he takes to Kṛṣṇa." How? Now, *budhā bhāva-samanvitāḥ:* with full knowledge, he becomes a devotee of Kṛṣṇa.
> So this is the process of *ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam*, to cleanse the material dust from the mirror of our mind. The whole process is to dust out the dirty things which we have accumulated by our material association, and therefore to revive our spiritual consciousness, or Kṛṣṇa consciousness. From *Bhagavad-gītā* we are studying about the process of life by which we can revive our Kṛṣṇa consciousness. There is no need of external help for reviving Kṛṣṇa consciousness. You have got Kṛṣṇa consciousness dormant in yourself. It is the quality of the self. So the..., we have simply to invoke by this process.
---
**[1968: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.6](spoken/1968/680803sb.mon)**
> Similarly, when Kṛṣṇa says that "I...," *tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham...* This *ātmānam* means body, *ātmānam* means the mind, or *ātmānam* means the soul. But He is the Supreme Soul, so how He creates His soul? And He is nondifferent, absolute. Therefore the interpretation given by Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa, that "I create" means "I appear," "I create My appearance." Just like sun creates its appearance. The sun is there already, but when sun appears, it means that you can say like that, that "Sun creates its appearance."
> So Kṛṣṇa says that *yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati, tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham.* Now, this *sṛjāmi,* this word, is used in Sanskrit, "something manufactured." Something manufactured. Just like I make this spectacle case. Or you make. This is called *sṛjāmi.* But actually we understand like that, but here *sṛjāmi,* this word, as explained by Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa, a learned scholar, who said that *sṛjāmi* means *prakaṭāmi[?],* "I appear."
---
**[1971: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.15](spoken/1971/710803sb.lon)**
> So we are manufacturing so many religious system on these two platforms. One platform is how to enjoy to the fullest extent, and another platform is how to become zero, voidism. But actually, neither you are enjoyer, nor you are zero. Both of them are false. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says that any religious system on the basis of this renunciation or enjoyment... When we take this material world as fact, that means we want to enjoy it. And when are frustrated, then we want to make zero. So actually, it is neither zero, nor there is any cause of frustration. You have to simply to take to the right knowledge.
> So up to the understanding to become God is materialism. All endeavors up to the point of becoming God is materialism. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says that "You cannot be happy by all these religious systems." Religious system... There are two kinds of religious systems. Some of them are *pravṛtti-mārga,* increasing the path of enjoyment, sense enjoyment. That dictates that "You come to the heavenly planet. You'll have ten thousands of years' duration of life and very beautiful women to enjoy. Very nice garden, and drinking *soma-rasa*." So this is called *pravṛtti-mārga.*
---
**[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.1 Engagement August 3, 1972, London] > So the real purpose of life, as it is advised by Ṛṣabhadeva, *tapo divyam:* "My dear boys, just accept austerity and penances for transcendental realization," *divyam. Divyam* means the platform where God can be understood. Just like Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, janma karma me divyaṁ yo jānāti tattvataḥ*.
> This is called spiritual knowledge. Spiritual knowledge does not mean anything else. To understand the spiritual, constitutional position of the living entity, that is called spiritual. And at the present moment, by constitution, my position is that I never die or I never take birth. But because I have accepted this material body, therefore I have to change. *Vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya*. Just like we change our garments. I am putting on this garment. When it is old or not usable, I give it up; I accept another coat or shirt. Similarly, we have got coat and shirt over our position as soul. The shirt is the subtle body: mind, intelligence and ego. And the gross coat is made of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, sky. In these two coverings, I, the soul, I am existing.
---
**[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 2.2](spoken/1973/730803bg.lon)**
> Bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca. Vyavasāyātmikā-buddhiḥ, niścayātmikā-buddhiḥ.* If one has got unflinching faith in Kṛṣṇa and *guru, guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya...* [*Cc *Madhya19.151]. We have to receive mercy both from the spiritual master and Kṛṣṇa. We cannot jump over to Kṛṣṇa. That is another nonsense. We must approach Kṛṣṇa through *guru.* That is *paramparā* system. Kṛṣṇa is not so cheap thing that you can jump over. Somebody says, "Oh, why shall I accept *guru*? I can approach Kṛṣṇa directly." No. Kṛṣṇa does not accept such... *Mad-bhaktaḥ pūjābhyadhikaḥ.* Kṛṣṇa says that "First of all you become devotee of My devotee." Caitanya Mahāprabhu says, *gopī-bhartuḥ pada-kamalayor dāsa-dāsa-dāsānudāsaḥ* : "I am the servant of the servant of the servant of Kṛṣṇa." This is called *paramparā* system.
> So impersonal conception is the offshoot of the person. That will be explained in the Thirteenth Chapter: *mayā tatam idaṁ sarvam*. Kṛṣṇa says that "Everyone..., everywhere I am spread. I exist everywhere." How does He exist? By His energy. That energy is impersonal. But the Supreme Person, He's not impersonal. He's person. Therefore it is said, *śrī-bhagavān uvāca.* Bhagavān means who is full with six kinds of opulence, *aiśvarya:* the richest, the most famous, the most learned, the most beautiful, the most strong and the most renouncer. He's Bhagavān.
---
**[1973: Garden Conversation With Mahādeva's Mother, Mrs. Critchley and Jesuit Priest](spoken/1973/730803gc.lon)**
> If you actually want peace of your mind, then you must try..., you must learn how to love God. So our preaching is—it doesn't matter, whatever religion you are following, it doesn't matter—if you have achieved this aim, how to love God, then your system is first class. That's all. That is our preaching.
> Sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje*. Bhakti* means love of God. How much you have learned to love God, that much we want to know. We don't say that "You are Christian, you become followers of Hindu rituals or Muhammadan rituals." No. You remain in your position, but just try to love God to the best of your capacity.
---
**[1974: Bhagavad-gītā 4.11](spoken/1974/740803bg.vrn)**
> The example is given: just like a green bird enters into the green tree. It does not mean that the bird is mixed. No. The bird is keeping its independence as an individual, but it appears to others, those who do not see properly, that it has merged into the tree. It has actually not merged. And because it does not merge, therefore they fall down. They again come out. That is explained in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* that *ye 'nye 'ravindākṣa vimukta-māninaḥ... Vimukta-māninaḥ*. They are thinking, "Now I have become one with the Supreme." But actually, that is a false impression. *Māninaḥ. Māninaḥ* means actually it is not fact, but he's thinking like that. *Vimukta-māninaḥ.* Why he's thinking like that? *Aviśuddha-buddhayaḥ.* His knowledge is not perfect. *Aviśuddha. Viśuddha* means perfect, and *aviśuddha* means not perfect. Unnecessarily he's thinking that "I have become one with the..." I remain the same part and parcel. As Kṛṣṇa says, *mamaivāṁśo jīva-bhūtaḥ*.
> So material nature is also Kṛṣṇa. Material nature... Because material nature is the energy of Kṛṣṇa... Just like this light. This light is distributing illumination. So this illumination is also light. The illumination is coming from the light. Therefore, so far illumination is concerned, there is in the lamp as well as in the illumination. So energy is not different from the energetic. But if you want to be controlled by the energy, Kṛṣṇa says, "Yes, you be controlled." And if you want to be controlled by Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa says, "Yes." Therefore He says, *ye yathā māṁ prapadyante.* It is up to you. But you'll be controlled. There is no independence, sir. There is no independence. You'll be controlled. That is your nature. You cannot be controller. That is not possible. "Either you be controlled by Me personally, or you be controlled..."
---
**[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.5.22](spoken/1974/740803sb.vrn)**
> So, so in this way our proposition is that if we want perfection, then in whatever position we are*—*either I am a *brāhmaṇa,* or I am a *kṣatriya,* or I am a *vaiśya,* or I am a *śūdra—*it doesn't matter if we simply take this vow, that Kṛṣṇa is the original cause of everything. A *śūdra* is also a..., the original cause is Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa says in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* that He is the cause of the *śūdras.* We should not hate anyone, because everyone is born of Kṛṣṇa. *Ahaṁ bīja-pradaḥ pitā*. Kṛṣṇa says. *Sarva-yoniṣu.* It doesn't matter in what form the living entity is there, but Kṛṣṇa claims that He is the father. He is the father. So either *brāhmaṇa* or *kṣatriya* or *vaiśya* or *śūdra* or *mleccha, yavana,* or white, black, European, American—anyone—he should know that the original cause is Kṛṣṇa. This is perfection of life.
> So we should not take anything neglectfully. Neither we should be careless to take care of Kṛṣṇa's property, Kṛṣṇa's living being, Kṛṣṇa's house, Kṛṣṇa's temple, Kṛṣṇa's business, Kṛṣṇa's... Everything Kṛṣṇa's, Kṛṣṇa. *Īśāvāsyam idaṁ sarvaṁ yat kiñca jagatyāṁ jagat* [Īśo*mantra* 1]. If we think like that, then that is perfect Kṛṣṇa consciousness. *Man-manā bhava mad-bhaktaḥ*. We may think..., see varieties of things. It doesn't matter. But if we know that the original cause of this thing is Kṛṣṇa, that is perfection. We are seeing this table. It is wood. But if we know... It is a fact. You know or not know, that doesn't matter. The original cause is Kṛṣṇa. The microphone, the original cause is Kṛṣṇa. These *karatālas,* the original cause is Kṛṣṇa. This pitcher, original cause is Kṛṣṇa. Everything. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. And it is fact. Not that we are imagining. Just like... Take, for example, these material things. Material things, this table, it is... How it is caused by Kṛṣṇa? Kṛṣṇa says, *bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva ca*.
---
**[1975: Car Conversation](spoken/1975/750803cr.det)**
>used in the *Bhagavad-gītā, mūḍhā,* it is very appropriate. No knowledge. Not only here; throughout the whole universe, even in the upper planetary system, they are also engaged in the same foolishness. Greater fool and a smaller fool.
>given so much property. Use it properly. Be Kṛṣṇa conscious. Be happy. "No, we don't want happiness. At the same time, we aspire after happiness."
---
**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.9 University Lecture](spoken/1975/750803s2.det)**
> His form... He has got form. He is not formless. But His form is different. That form is *sat-cit-ānanda. Sat* means eternal, and *cit* means full of knowledge, and *ānanda* means full of bliss. So we are part and parcel of God. Kṛṣṇa says, *mamaivāṁśo jīva bhūtaḥ* : "All these living entities, they are My part and parcel." So if Kṛṣṇa is *sat-cit-ānanda,* then we are also *sat-cit-ānanda,* because we are part. Just like gold and a gold small particle, that is also gold. You cannot say it is something else. No. So part or whole, it may be. That is difference. Part is never equal to the whole. But quality is the same. Therefore we, being part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Lord, we are trying to utilize our original constitutional position. This is going on.
> So we are changing, but we are so fool that we do not understand what is the real problem of life. We are simply busy in some temporary problems. Real problem is that a living being is eternal, and by the laws of nature, by his *karma,* he has to change his body. That is real problem. *Tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ.* And we can see, if we have got eyes, that there are many varieties of life, 8,400,000 varieties of life. *Jalajā nava-lakṣāni sthāvarā lakṣa-viṁśati* [*Padma Purāṇa*]. So Kṛṣṇa says, *tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ.* According to your *karma,* you will get another body. That what kind of body I shall get, that I do not know. Then what is your education? Suppose you are being educated. You know aim, that "I shall become a lawyer," "I become a scientist," "I shall become mathematician." With this purpose you are being educated. But what purpose you are being educated for the next life? Do you know this? No. Then what is your education? You may be very good scientist, but can you manufacture a scientific law that you will never die? No. That is not possible. You will never take birth after death? You will never be diseased? You can manufacture nice medicine for a type of disease, but you cannot stop disease. You cannot stop birth, you cannot stop death, you cannot stop disease, you cannot stop old age.
---
**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.50](spoken/1975/750803sb.det)**
> Kṛṣṇa made condition. Kṛṣṇa is personal Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. He came to show His mercy, and therefore He left *Bhagavad-gītā* to be read by common... Any common man can understand. But the rascals are so rigid that they will misinterpret. Kṛṣṇa left it for reading it by everyone. Any common man can understand. *Dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre samavetā yuyutsavaḥ*. This is the beginning. Any common man can understand. The Kurukṣetra is still there, and it is Dharma-kṣetra. Still people go there to take bath in the Brahma-kuṇḍa during lunar and solar eclipse. It is a great *dharma-kṣetra.* But they will interpret, "*Dharma-kṣetra, kuru-kṣetra* means this body." Where they get this meaning? Where is the dictionary? No, because he is scholar, he has invented some meaning. This is going on, and people are misled.
> So this is not life. This is animal life. Therefore Vedic injunction is, "Don't keep in this animal life." "Don't keep yourself in this darkness." *Jyotir gama:* "Come to the light." [*Bṛhad-āraṇyaka Upaniṣad* 1.3.28] So *jyotir gama* means... That is *tapasya.* To come to the platform of light, it requires *tapasya,* austerity. That is required. The human life is meant for *tapasya,* to come to the life platform. *Tapo divyaṁ putrakā yena śuddhyet sattva*.
---
**[1976: Bhagavad-gītā 9.34](spoken/1976/760803bg.nmr)**
> So for such great benefit of life, if you simply think of Kṛṣṇa and become His devotee, why shall I lose this opportunity? What is that intelligence? Therefore unless one is a rascal, miscreant, lowest of the mankind, he cannot give up Kṛṣṇa consciousness. It is not possible. *Na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ*. Unless he is rascal number one, lowest of the mankind, full of sinful activities, he cannot avoid Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That's all. This is the position.
> Just like we are here, we are given this planet to live, and there is this moon planet, we can see. And these rascals try to go there so many ways. They are refused: "No, you cannot go." Live there, go. It is practical. We see the moon planet is there, we have got machine, we can go, but you cannot go. This is laws of nature. [laughter] This is laws of nature. This is practically proof. But they are so rascal, fool, they are going to another planet. They do not think, "With the one planet we have already failed." [laughter] They are called *punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām*, chewing the chewed. They are being baffled every step, and still they are trying to overcome the laws of nature. That is their foolishness. *Narādhamā. Māyayāpahṛta-jñānā. Māyā* is so strong upon them that their so-called scientific knowledge is useless. In 1958, when I wrote that book *Easy Journey to Other Planets,* I wrote in that book, those who have read it, that this moon planet excusion is simply childish and waste of time. And actually it has proved. So I was not a scientist, neither I am a scientist. How did I say? I said on the strength of the version in the Vedic literature that it is not possible.
---
**[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/760803r2.nmr)**
> Now our Pradyumna was complaining that in the *gurukula,* his child was not even educated to count 1-2-3-4. So I have told him that "You educate your child. Let the mother educate in English, and you educate him in Sanskrit." Who can take care? So similarly, every father, mother should take care that in future they may not be a batch of unwanted children. We can welcome hundreds and thousands of children. There is no question of economic problem. We know that. But the father, mother must take care at least. Properly trained up, they should be always engaged. That is *brahmacārī gurukula. Brahmacārī guru-kule vasan dānto guror hitam*. From the very beginning they should be trained up. From the body, they should be trained up how to take bath, how to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa or some Vedic *mantra,* go to the temple, offer obeisances, prayer, then take their lunch, then... In this way, they should be always engaged. Then they'll be trained up. Simple thing. We don't want to train them as big grammarians. No. That is not wanted. That anyone, if he has got some inclination, he can do it personally. There is no harm. General training is that he must be a devotee, a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa. That should be introduced. Then the *gurukula* will be... Otherwise Jyotirmayee was suggesting the biology. What they'll do with biology? Don't introduce unnecessary, nonsense things. Simple life. Simply to understand Kṛṣṇa. Simply let them be convinced that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; it is our duty to serve Him. That's all. Huh? Bhakti Vinoda Ṭhākura. What is that? *Kena māyāra baśe, yāccho bhese' khāccho hābuḍubu bhāi jīva kṛṣṇa-dāsa ei biśvāsa karle ta āra duḥkha nāi.*
> So organize. If you have got sufficient place, sufficient scope, let them be trained up very nicely. If some four, five centers like this there are in Europe, the whole face will be changed. Important places like Germany, France, England. Now we are getting place. I like that place, German, on account of this. It has got scope.
---
**[1976: Room Conversation With French Commander](spoken/1976/760803r3.nmr)**
> How the laws of nature is working, they are completely in ignorance. They do not know. This is modern civilization. The laws of nature must work in its own way. You care for it or do not care for it, that is your business, but the laws of nature will work. *Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ*. But these rascals, they do not know how the laws of nature will work. They are endeavoring artificially for, foolishly, to overcome the laws of nature. This is science, rascal's science, which is impossible, but they are trying. This is called rascaldom. Stupidity. Do the scientists not say like that: "We are trying to overcome"? Rascal, you'll never be able to do that. But this rascaldom is going on. And they're applauding, "Oh, very good, very good, very good. Oh, you are going to the moon planet." But after all endeavor, the grapes are sour: "It is not useful." That's all. You know this story? The jackal? He tried for the grapes, jumping, jumping, jumping. When it was failure, he said, "Oh, it is useless. It is sour. It is sour, no use." [laughter] So they are doing like that. The jackals are jumping, that's all. And we can see how these rascals are jumping uselessly. [laughter] So we are warning people not to follow these silly jackals. Be prudent and be Kṛṣṇa conscious. That will make your life successful.
> So this is the position, and it is very difficult, but still we can do some service this to the humanity, by preaching this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. And those who are fortunate, they'll come, take up seriously. These reckless prodigal sons, we have got so many examples. For example, just like there is some stock of petroleum and they got information that from petroleum they can run on cars without horse. So, manufacture millions of cars and spoil the whole oil. This is recklessness. And when it is finished, then they'll cry. And it will be finished. This is going on. Recklessness. Just as reckless boy, father has left some property, use it, use it, as soon as you get. The sooner it is finished, that's all. That is reckless. There is some strength in the body, and as soon as he gets a little taste of sex life, "Oh, spend it, spend it," whole energy spent. Then brain becomes vacant. This is recklessness. Beginning from twelfth year, by the thirty year, everything finished. Then he's impotent. In our childhood—in our childhood means, say, eighty years ago, or say, a hundred years ago—there was no motorcar. And now, wherever you go, in any country, you see thousands and millions of motorcar. This is recklessness. Hundred years ago they could do without motorcar, and now they cannot live without a car. In this way, unnecessarily, they're increasing bodily or material necessities of life. This is recklessness. And the leaders who will encourage them to this recklessness, he's good leader. And who say, "Stop this nonsense, come to Kṛṣṇa consciousness," nobody will care. *Andhā yathāndhair upanīyamānās te 'pīśa-tantryām uru-dāmni baddhāḥ*. This is called blind leader leading blind followers. They do not know that both of them are bound up by the strict, stringent laws of nature. [break]
