# August 3 *Lectures from this day: 15 recordings* --- **[[spoken/660803bg.ny|Bg 4.14-19 — August 3, 1966, New York]]** So this is the process of *ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam* [[cc/antya/20/12|[Cc. Antya 20.12] ]], to cleanse the material dust from the mirror of our mind. The whole process is to dust out the dirty things which we have accumulated by our material association, and therefore to revive our spiritual consciousness, or Kṛṣṇa consciousness. From *Bhagavad-gītā* we are studying about the process of life by which we can revive our Kṛṣṇa consciousness. There is no need of external help for reviving Kṛṣṇa consciousness. You have got Kṛṣṇa consciousness dormant in yourself. It is the quality of the self. So the..., we have simply to invoke by this process. *Kṛṣṇa-bhakti nitya-siddha sādhya kabhu naya* [[cc/madhya/22/107|[Cc. Madhya 22.107] ]]. This Kṛṣṇa consciousness is an eternal fact. It is nothing that by this organization we are imposing upon you something extra. No. It is within you. It is within every living entity. Any living entity—never mind whether he is human being or animal... When Lord Caitanya was singing this Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare, He was passing through jungles, forests, and the tigers, the elephants, the stag and all, I mean to..., forest animals, they joined. They joined. It is such a thing. Of course, it depends on the pure-hearted chanting. As we become... This is the process. As we become advanced in this chanting method, similarly, our heart becomes freed from all the dirty things of material contact. So even the animals can be captivated by this chanting, what to speak of human being. --- **[[spoken/680803sb.mon|SB 1.2.6 — August 3, 1968, Montreal]]** I am very glad that these girls, with great difficulty, you come to this class. The question was that "Why people are suffering in different types of hellish condition of life, and how they can be delivered?" Parīkṣit Mahārāja heard from Śukadeva Gosvāmī that there [are] different kinds of hellish condition of life according to different types of sinful activities. So in this material world everyone is implicated, or involved, in some sort of sinful life. Just like in the prison house. One may be a first-class prisoner, just like sometimes big politicians, they are put into first-class prison arrangement. --- **[[spoken/720803sb.lon|SB 5.5.1, Engagement — August 3, 1972, London]]** **Prabhupāda:** > nāyaṁ deho deha-bhājāṁ nṛloke > kaṣṭān kāmān arhate viḍ-bhujāṁ ye > tapo divyaṁ putrakā yena sattvaṁ > śuddhyed yasmād brahma-saukhyaṁ tv anantam > [[sb/5/5/1|[SB. 5.5.1] ]] Many millions of years ago, King Ṛṣabhadeva... He was incarnation of God. Before His retirement He instructed His sons. He had one hundred sons. The eldest one was Bharata, and under..., after his name, this planet was called Bhārata-varṣa. Bhārata-varṣa at the present moment, what we understand, that small piece of land, India, Bhārata-varṣa does not mean that piece of land. Bhārata-varṣa means this whole planet. So before that, before Emperor Bharata, this planet was known as Ilāvṛta-varṣa, and after the reign of Mahārāja Bharata this planet is known as Bhārata-varṣa. Gradually, the Vedic culture being forgotten, the whole planet is now divided. The seven islands, as already existing, they are mentioned in the Vedic literature also, *sapta-dvīpa:* Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, and the Archipelago* [Arctic level?]. In this way this whole world is divided into seven lands, islands. --- **[[spoken/730803bg.lon|Bg 2.2 — August 3, 1973, London]]** **Pradyumna:** *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* *śrī bhagavān uvāca—*the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; *kutaḥ—*wherefrom; *tvā—*unto you; *kaśmalam—*dirtiness; *idam—*this lamentation; *viṣame—*this hour of crisis; *samupasthitam—*arrived; *anārya—*persons who do not know the value of life; *juṣṭam—*practiced by; *asvargyam—*that which does not lead to higher planets; *akīrti—*infamy; *karam—*the cause of; *arjuna—*O Arjuna. --- **[[spoken/730803gc.lon|Garden Conversation with Mahādeva’s Mother, Mrs. Critchley and Jesuit Priest — August 3, 1973, London]]** **Prabhupāda:** The aeroplane botheration [sound of aeroplane flying over] was not in Switzerland. This is called *māyā.* Actually, my position is servant. Just like woman: natural position is to remain dependent on man. That is natural position. But if some woman artificially tries to become man, or master, that is suffering. That is suffering. We have given this example that in India the women, they voluntarily surrender to the subjugation of the husband. But there are many families—hundreds and thousands even—they are happy. That's a fact. And in the Western countries they want to remain independent, so they are not happy. Religion means a kind of faith. So that is not the proper meaning of *dharma,* "faith." Faith one may have, one may not have. But actually *dharma* means compulsory: it must be. Just like sugar. Sugar must be sweet. There is no question of sometimes becoming sweet and sometimes becoming bitter. That is not sugar. Sugar must be sweet. Similarly, *dharma* is also a "must be." It cannot be option, or a kind of faith which you can change at your whims. That is not *dharma. Dharma* means "must be." The same example: A particular thing has a particular characteristic. The sugar characteristic is sweetness. Chili is hot. Similarly, everything has got its characteristic. Just like microphone. I am speaking; it must resound. That is the characteristic. That is *dharma:* which cannot be separated. If sweetness is separated from sugar, it is no longer sugar. Similarly, *dharma* means that. *Dharma* means, real meaning is, characteristic. The characteristic of the living being is to serve. Caitanya Mahāprabhu gave this instruction: *jīvera svarūpa haya nitya kṛṣṇa dāsa* [[cc/madhya/20/108-109|[Cc. Madhya 20.108-109] ]]. That is the characteristic of all living entities, to become servant, to become servant of Kṛṣṇa. But when we do not serve Kṛṣṇa, then, because my constitutional position is to serve, I have to serve *māyā.* If you don't serve Kṛṣṇa, then you will have to serve *māyā.* Because you have no other business than to serve. Just like a servant class: If he gives up one master, he must accept another master. May be better master, but master he has to accept. Just like dog. Without accepting a master, it is street dog. It has no position. So *dharma* means that the characteristic of the living being. So here it is, says, *dharmasya hy apavargyasya na artha arthāyopakalpate.* There are four principles in the material world: *dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa* *[SB 4.8.41, Cc. Ādi 1.90].* Human life begins from religious life, because in the animal life there is no religion. Animal life—cats' life, dogs' life, tigers' life, or any other less than human being... Especially civilized human being all over the world, there is some type of religion, either it may be Hindu religion or Christian religion or Muhammadan religion or Buddhist religion. That is the sign of civilized human society. *Dharmeṇa hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ. [laughter] We can say that "All right, the Americans have sent their CIA, but why the Germans' business there? They are also CIA?" And very soon the Russians also will join, the Polish also will join, everyone will join. **Prabhupāda:** No. We have got potency to force everyone to join. The Russians have already imperceptibly joined—they have praised my books. That is imperceptible... What is called? **Prabhupāda:** Ah. In East Germany also, they have placed order. So this is joining. Just like for us, if you bring any other literature, we throw it away immediately. We take it as useless. Actually it is. We have nothing to learn from them, anything. All bogus. Either he's scientist or astronomer or..., we know they are talking all bogus thing. There may be some truth. Even that truth is there when a child speaks, there is some truth. When a child speaks to his parents, there is some truth; otherwise where is the question of talking? So little portion truth is there, everywhere. But when they talk of big, big things—they are going to Mars and scratching sand there—that we don't believe. That we don't believe. When they talk of this tape recorder, some electronic machine, joining together and it is working, that much care you can take. But when you speak of so many things, that millions of years there were germs and germination; now they are trying to come out, and it is all vacant—these are all bogus. We don't accept. Talking too much. In Bengal it is called *jeṭhāmo.* [precocity] When the same child speaks something too much, "Ah, stop." To the extent of his capacity, that's all right. But if you talk more than that, then you are rascal. So they are doing that now. Because they have got some electronic success, or they have manufactured some jet plane, or these, they are now thinking, "Now we have owned over the whole world situation." That is nonsense. They are thinking like that: "Now we have control over the world world." That is *jeṭhāmo,* speaking more than their capacity. And so far we are concerned, we don't talk anything, except what is mentioned in the books. That's all. We remain always foolish. And as foolish men, we do not talk. We simply talk what is mentioned by Vyāsadeva, by Śukadeva Gosvāmī.
