# July 22 ## Spoken on July 22 *Lectures from this day: 8 recordings* --- **[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 4.11](spoken/1966/660722bg.ny.md)** > So here is a chance. Now, Kṛṣṇa says that *ye yathā māṁ prapadyante.* Now the proportionately, if you agree to follow the leadership of Kṛṣṇa, proportionately as you follow, so you become perfect. If you follow one percent, then you become one percent perfect. If you follow twenty-five percent, then you become twenty-five percent perfect. And if you follow cent per cent, then you become cent per cent. *Ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tāṁs tathaiva bhajāmy aham*. > So *ye yathā māṁ prapadyante.* A proportionately, as I surrender unto the Supreme Lord... We must always know that our background of relationship is that we are subordinate and He is great. God is great. We cannot be equal with Him. We have to follow. He is the supreme leader. Therefore Lord Kṛṣṇa says that "You give up everything." He is trying to give you leadership. He is prepared to give you all leadership, provided you are prepared to follow His leadership. That's all. Reciprocation. And in proportionately, proportionately as you accept His leadership, He also responds reciprocally. *Ye yathā māṁ prapadyante.* As you... --- **[1968: Paramānanda & Satyabhāmā's Wedding Lecture](spoken/1968/680722wl.mon)** > There are two section of philosophers in India, approved; not, I mean to say, manufactured philosopher, mental speculators, but actually those who are counted valuable. There are two classes of philosophers, namely the impersonalist and personalist. The Vaiṣṇava, they accept that the Absolute Truth is person, and the Māyāvādī philosophers, they say the Absolute Truth is impersonal. That is the difference. Otherwise their process of other paraphernalia, execution of understanding, is almost the same. > So I am a *sannyāsī.* I have renounced my family life. I have got my children, my grandchildren, I have my wife still living, but I have separated from them. This is called *sannyāsa.* Why I am taking interest again, this family life of my students? Because I want to see them properly progress towards spiritual life. Therefore, although it is not the business of a *sannyāsī* to take part in marriage ceremony, in this country, just to save my students, both boys and girls, from sinful activities, I am personally taking interest that they may become good gentleman and lady by marriage. --- **[1971: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.8](spoken/1971/710722sb.ny)** > Growing, we..., we are imperceptibly—cannot understand—but it is actually changing the body. Just like in your childhood you had a small body. That is no longer existing. That means you have changed your body. Similarly, you'll have to change this body. When this body will not work anymore... Because it is material. Every material things deteriorate, and it becomes useless at certain length of time. Any machine, any cloth. Therefore it has been taken as dress: *vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya*. > So in order to become God conscious, you have to follow some rules and regulation. We do not give any credit to the vegetarians than the meat-eaters. Because one has to eat. But our proposal is, Kṛṣṇa conscious men, that we shall eat remnants of foodstuff offered to Kṛṣṇa. That is our philosophy. And Kṛṣṇa says, *patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati*,* that Kṛṣṇa says that "Anyone who offers Me a little fruit, a little water and little leaf with devotion and love, I accept it." --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 1.28–29](spoken/1973/730722bg.lon)** > Two things required in human life: knowledge and *vairāgya,* detachment. The attachment increases. First of all it increases, *puṁsaḥ striyā mithunī-bhāvam etam*. This whole world is based on sex life. A man has got attraction for woman; a woman has got attraction for man. This is nature's bondage, shackle. And when they are actually united, either by the father, mother, or by their own way, that shackle, that attraction, increases. *Puṁsaḥ striyā mithunī-bhāvam etaṁ tayor mitho hṛdaya-granthi āhuḥ. Hṛdaya-granthi,* knot in the heart. "She is my wife," "He is my husband." > So this is the process. The basic principle is the soul. The soul is acting through intelligence, and the intelligence is acting through mind, and the mind is expressed through the senses. This is the position. So as my mind is absorbed in something, some subject matter, my bodily symptoms also will work, or the senses will work according to that mind. Therefore for spiritual advancement also, you have to train your mind. *Sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padāravindayor vacāṁsi vaikuṇṭha-guṇānuvarṇane*. --- **[1973: Room Conversation with Dr. Arnold Toynbee [Famous Historian](spoken/1973/730722r1.lon)** > But still, the British prestige can be elevated if actually, according to the Vedic instruction, you try to make your social construction, the political institution and economic development... Every direction is there. So you are all great historians. And there are many politicians. If you take this instruction of the *Vedas* little seriously, you can make your state an ideal state, and people are still ready to follow you. Then the whole history of the world will change. And if you people agree, then I can help. I can help. > So this is the only shelter. If people take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, they'll be saved from all the calamities of this age. Otherwise, there is no other... Now they are going to the forest, the hippies. Eh? *Ācchinna-dāra-draviṇā gacchanti giri-kānanam*. Giri-kānanam* means to the forests, to the hills. They'll go. *Ācchinna-dāra-draviṇām. Dāra* means wife, and *draviṇā* means money. So they'll be separated from wife and money, and they'll go to the forest and hills, being disappointed. This is happening already. *Ācchinna-dāra-draviṇā gacchanti giri-kānanam.* --- **[1973: Conversation with George Harrison](spoken/1973/730722r2.lon)** > So this *bhakti, bhakti-yoga* means it is for liberated person. That is confirmed in *Bhagavad-gītā: sa guṇān samatītyaitān*.* Liberation means to transcend the effects of the three material qualities: *sattva-guṇa, rajo-guṇa, tamo-guṇa*. So it is clearly stated, *sa guṇān samatītya etān*. *Etān* is plural number. All these *guṇas*, qualities, he transcends. Therefore he is liberated. Those who are not liberated, they are conducted by these three qualities. The three qualities: in *sattva-guṇa*, *brahmana;* in *rajo-guṇa*, *kṣatriya;* in mixed, *vaiśya;* in *tamo-guṇa*, *śūdra*. So... But a devotee is not grouped. He is transcendental to all these *brāhmaṇa*, *kṣatriya*, *vaiśya, śūdra*. A devotee does not depend on this material division of society. He is above that. > So when we speak to these principles sometimes people become angry. Yes. The same thing, *mūrkhāya upadeśo hi prakopāya na śāntaye.* That risk is there. But actually that is the fact. God consciousness can be awakened proportionately, as proportionately one is pure. Pure. Purified. Because Kṛṣṇa is the purest. --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.41](spoken/1975/750722sb.la)** > If you do not follow the Vedic instruction, that is *adharma,* or irreligious. The Vedic *dharma,* just like I have quoted so many Vedic: "Do this. Do this." So Kṛṣṇa, or Nārāyaṇa... Nārāyaṇa, Kṛṣṇa—there is no difference—He is doing everything; everything is His knowledge. *Vedāhaṁ samatītāni*. Kṛṣṇa says, "I know everything." In the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* in the beginning, *janmādy asya yato 'nvayād itarataś cārtheṣv abhijñaḥ*. That is Absolute Truth; He is *abhijñaḥ*. Absolute Truth is not a chunk, that chunk all of a sudden become burst and real creation here! What is that, very sensible theory? No. *Veda* says, *abhijñaḥ*: the creation was taken place not from the chunk, but *abhijñaḥ*, the person who knows everything. By His brain. So the scientists are now, some of them, are realizing that there is a big brain behind this all creation, and some of the rascals, they are saying that chunk. It is not chunk: some being, the Supreme Being, who has got supreme brain, He is working. That is knowledge. Therefore in the *Vedas* you will find this instruction, *nityo nityānāṁ cetanaś cetanānām* [*Kaṭha Upaniṣad* 2.2.13], that what is the absolute truth? > They think that "Kṛṣṇa is also like me. Kṛṣṇa is dancing with *gopīs*—we can also find out some *gopīs* and dance." So this is called *daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī*. *Guṇa-mayī*. There it is said, *guṇa nāma*. So according to *guṇa,* then you are named. If you are in the *sattva-guṇa*, means the mode of goodness, or if you are in *brāhmaṇa...,* or if you are in *sattva-guṇa,* then you are a *brāhmaṇa*. If you are in *rajo-guṇa,* then you are a *kṣatriya*. And if you are in *tamo-guṇa,* then you are a *śūdra*. And if you are mixed up, you are a *vaiśya*. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, --- ## Letters on July 22 *Letters from this day: 14* --- **[1967: Letter to Dayananda](letters/1967/670722_dayananda)** > I am very glad to read your letter of appreciation for my services, and I can understand that you are making good strides in Krishna Consciousness. --- **[1967: Letter to Janardana](letters/1967/670722_janardana)** > I have read with great interest the copy of your letter, and I am so glad to learn that you are feeling more and more Krishna Conscious. --- **[1969: Letter to Brahmananda](letters/1969/690722_brahmananda)** > I am pleased to note that under your direction Bali Mardan, Jayadvaita, Rsi Kumar, Candanacarya, Nayana Bhirama and Joel Chalson are all working very nicely. --- **[1969: Letter to Joel Chalson](letters/1969/690722_joel_chalson)** > From your previous letter as well as this letter it appears that you are the right person to grasp the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness, and you have got good association of the devotees in New York. --- **[1969: Letter to Martin Malles](letters/1969/690722_martin_malles)** > I am very pleased to note that you have been coming to our Krishna Consciousness temple in New York and what you are learning there from the disciples and from our literature is provoking you to think very deeply on the matters of self-realization. --- **[1969: Letter to Sivananda](letters/1969/690722_sivananda)** > The first thing I must mention is that I have still not received the ticket to Germany which Krishna das informed me in a previous letter was already sent to me. --- **[1972: Letter to Acyutananda](letters/1972/720722_acyutananda)** > The book contains some derogatory remarks about my Guru Maharaja, therefore we shall having nothing to do with printing it. --- **[1972: Letter to Giriraja](letters/1972/720722_giriraja)** > I am especially pleased to hear that everything is going on nicely in Bombay, and that you are sending a party of men to live in Bombay city for collecting there. --- **[1972: Letter to Gurudasa](letters/1972/720722_gurudasa)** > I have recently received several letters from the others there in Vrndavana, wherein they have mentioned there may be some illicit relationship between Devananda Swami and your wife, Yamuna devi. --- **[1972: Letter to Jagadisa](letters/1972/720722_jagadisa)** > I am very much pleased to hear that everything is going on nicely in Canada, especially that your travelling party is having good success. --- **[1972: Letter to Jayapataka](letters/1972/720722_jayapataka)** > I am very glad to hear that the building work is going on with full speed, including both day and night shifts of workers. --- **[1972: Letter to Sri Jogeswar Chowdhury](letters/1972/720722_sri_jogeswar_chowdhury)** > I have seen your letter addressed to the Secretary of our London branch, and I am very much pleased to note that you have somehow or other seen one copy of our "Back to Godhead" magazine and that you wish a copy of our *Teachings of Lord Caitanya. --- **[1972: Letter to Suniti](letters/1972/720722_suniti)** > Whatever happens we must take it as the special mercy shown by Krsna to his devotee. --- **[1973: Letter to Bhagavan](letters/1973/730722_bhagavan)** > You have done a nice job with the French edition of Back to Godhead, and I am especially looking forward to the next issue which will be color 32 pages.
