## Spoken on July 16
*Lectures from this day: 16 recordings*

**[1968: Room Conversation](spoken/1968/680716r1.mon)**
> Therefore the caste system is very nice. They have now been condemned... Not condemned, but they want to revise it. But this is a very scientific system. Why? It is created by Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ* : "I have created these..., the four divisions of caste." It is not exactly caste; section, *varṇa.* So how you can stop? It is natural.
> Caitanya Mahaprabhu also says, "You do not require to change." Kṛṣṇa says that *sva-karmaṇā tam abhyarcya.* You just try to worship the Supreme Lord by the result of your occupation. Because Kṛṣṇa requires everything. So if you are a potter, you supply pots. If you are florist, you supply flower. If you are carpenter, you work for temple. If you are washerman, then wash clothing of the temple. Temple is the center: Kṛṣṇa. And everyone gets chance to offer his service. Therefore temple worship is very nice.

**[1969: Śrī Śrī Rukmiṇī Dvārakānātha Deity Installation](spoken/1969/690716di.la)**
> So therefore the..., even born in a *brāhmaṇa* family, a woman is taken as woman, not as *brāhmaṇa.* But Kṛṣṇa says, "Never mind. Even if she is woman, even she is *śūdra,* even she is *vaiśya,* or any other," I mean to say, "family born in, never mind." *Māṁ hi pārtha vyapāśrityā,* if anyone is bona-fidely made Kṛṣṇa conscious, *te 'pi yānti parāṁ gatim,* so his way is open to the path of Vaikuṇṭha, *parāṁ gatim. Kiṁ punar brāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayas tathā*.
> Here, what we are doing, it is not rubber-stamping. It is actually training according to the *pāñcarātrikī-vidhī.* We are training all boys to become *brāhmaṇas:* to refrain from four kinds of sinful activities, to take bath, to take this, take that. And above all, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. *Ceto-darpaṇa-marjanam*, cleansing of all sinful activities. So in this way *harijana* can be made, but not that you pick up somebody nonsense and rubber-stamp this "*harijana.*" No. There must be process.

**[1969: Lecture at Initiation Fire Sacrifice](spoken/1969/690716in.la)**
> So *brahma-bhūtaḥ...* Anyway, if you realize yourself that you are not... That *brahma-bhūtaḥ* means simply to understand that "I am not the material body." To be convinced firmly with all reasons and argument, firmly conviction, this is called faith. Faith is not flickering. One must be firmly convinced. So then you immediately become joyful. Just like if you are implicated with some undesirable affairs and if you, some way or other, your lawyer advises, "Oh, you are free from this implication. The law does not bind you," just like you feel pleasure, "Oh, I'm not in this implication?" "Yes," similarly, as soon as one is convinced that "I am not this material body," then immediately he becomes joyful. *Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śocati*.
> There are ten kinds of offenses. You'll get the list. So we shall try to avoid. Then our chanting will be purified. And when the chanting is purified, then immediately you are liberated. And after liberation? *Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā* : your life of devotional service actually begins.

**[1971: Arrival Address [Airport](spoken/1971/710716ar.det)**
> So I was astonished that a learned professor who is posing himself on a very responsible post, he has no idea about the soul and the body, how they are different, how the soul migrating from one body to another. And everyone is accepting this body as the self, and "There is no life after death; therefore make the best use of this bad bargain and enjoy sense gratification as far as possible."
> Yasya ātma-buddhiḥ:* one who has accepted as self *kuṇape tri-dhātuke,* this bag of bones and flesh and blood... This body is made of... According to Vedic medicine or Vedic anatomy, it is made of three elements—mucus, bile and air. *Tri-dhātuke.* Apart from that medical science, this body, one who accepts this body as self as *sva-dhīḥ kalatrādiṣu,* and persons in relationship with this body as kinsmen, own men, *bhauma ijya-dhīḥ,* and the land where we take our birth as worshipable, *sa eva go-kharaḥ, he is accepted as *go-kharaḥ. Go* means cow, and *khara* means ass. That means animals. The animal, they accept this, that "I am this body." But human form of life, which is so advanced in knowledge...

**[1971: Lecture](spoken/1971/710716le.det)**
> So this is the way. This is called *paramparā* system. Don't try to manufacture. The difficulty is that we are manufacturing. And some rascals are supporting that "Whatever you manufacture, it is all right." This is another rascaldom. They are supporting that "Whatever you think of, religion, whatever you manufacture, it is all right." We don't say that. We say, "What Kṛṣṇa says, that is right. And everything wrong." That is our business. So if you say like that, "What Kṛṣṇa says is all right," that will please me. We don't want to adulterate and bluff.
> So I am very happy to see you all, American boys, Indians. This is wanted. We want to unite the whole world under this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. And actually that is happening. In our Society we have got devotees from all section of people—from Christian, from Jews, from Hindu, from Muhammadan, from black, from white. It doesn't matter, because we are seeing according to the *Bhagavad-gītā, paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśinaḥ*. A learned man sees every living entity on the equal level. So we are trying to see in that light, and we are trying to teach others also how to accept that light, how to enjoy that light.
---
**[1972: Address at End of Ratha-yātrā Parade](spoken/1972/720716a2.lon)**
> Then where shall I go? Kṛṣṇa says, *mām eti:* "He comes to Me." There is planet beyond this material sky. There is another sky. That is also stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā: paras tasmāt tu bhavo 'nyo 'vyakto 'vyaktāt sanātanaḥ*. There is another sky, which is eternal. This sky is temporary. Just like your body, my body or anything in this material world, they are temporary. They have got a date of birth, and they grow, they stay, they produce some by-product, then dwindle and then vanishes. That is material nature. But there is another nature, which is called spiritual nature. Even when everything is annihilated, that nature stands.
> You have... Most of you must have read *Bhagavad-gītā.* In the Fifteenth Chapter it is said that the living entities are part and parcel of God. God is by nature joyful. In the *Vedānta-sūtra* it is said about the Supreme Absolute Truth as *ānandamayo 'bhyāsāt* [*Vedānta-sūtra* 1.1.12]: by nature joyful. Therefore, as we are part and parcel of God, our aim of life is joy. We are searching after that joyfulness within this material world, but that is not possible. Just like a fish, if it is taken from the water and put on the land, in any condition the fish will never feel joyfulness.
---
**[1972: Address at Beginning of Ratha-yātrā Parade](spoken/1972/720716ad.lon)**
> So according to Vedic culture, when there is eclipse, lunar eclipse, people take bath in sacred rivers. So especially they go to Kurukṣetra, a pilgrimage. So Kṛṣṇa along with His family members, brother and sister, came to Kurukṣetra, and receiving this news, the *gopīs* and inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, where Lord Kṛṣṇa lived in His childhood, they came to see Him.
> So this Ratha-yātrā festival is a feeling festival for the Vaiṣṇava. Lord Caitanya taught us how to feel separation of God. Lord Caitanya never taught us that He had seen God, but He felt the separation of God very severely. Similarly, His next disciples, the *sad-gosvāmīs*, they also prosecuted their devotional service by separational feelings.

**[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 1.16–19](spoken/1973/730716bg.lon)**
> So Virāṭa, at that time this Mahārāja Virāṭa's daughter, Uttarā, was trained by Arjuna for dancing. Arjuna was appointed as a dancing teacher for the daughter of Mahārāja Virāṭa, Uttarā. So when it was discovered that Arjuna was not a dancing teacher—he was the great hero—Mahārāja Virāṭa wanted to offer his daughter, that "You marry my daughter," because he was disclosed. So Arjuna said, "How can I marry this girl? I am her teacher. Therefore a teacher is to be considered as father, so it is not possible. So if you like, I can get this girl married with my son Saubhadra, Subhadrā's son."
> Arjuna had another wife, Subhadrā. That Subhadrā, you know, sister of Kṛṣṇa. Sister of Kṛṣṇa. So Subhadrā; Balarāma, elder brother; Kṛṣṇa, younger brother. Kṛṣṇa wanted to hand over Subhadrā to Arjuna, and Balarāma wanted to hand over Subhadrā to Duryodhana. So Kṛṣṇa could not say anything. The elder brother has decided. Therefore Kṛṣṇa advised Arjuna to kidnap Subhadrā. Just see how much Kṛṣṇa was affectionate to Arjuna that Arjuna liked also to marry Subhadrā, and Subhadrā also liked, but the elder brother did not agree. So they made a plan that Arjuna kidnap Subhadrā.

**[1973: Room Conversation](spoken/1973/730716r1.lon)**
> So stress on this point. As far as possible, people should be encouraged to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa *mahā-mantra,* and try to bring the ecstasy and dance. Even there is no ecstasy, dance; it will bring ecstasy. Dancing is so nice. Chanting, dancing and take *prasādam,* take rest. That's all. Not that you shall take rest like Kumbhakarṇa. [laughs] Just to, I mean to say, answer the call of this deficient body, we have to take little rest. But as far as possible this should be conquered. *Nidrāhāra-vihārakādi-vijitau.* The Gosvāmīs, they conquered over eating, sleeping... Stress on *saṅkīrtana,* and let them chant and dance as long as possible. If they can chant and dance twenty-four hours, that is very good. That should be stressed.
> So at least in Europe and America, they will never be able to take all these things. The things should be made shortcut; at the same time, they should be successful. So that is chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa *mahā-mantra,* depending on... As soon as we have got some time, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Either loudly or silent... As far as possible loudly; if not possible, silently. But the tongue must go: Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. The tongue must work. And as far as possible, should be heard... That is... And officially, *krshkshaharamahaharama...*

**[1973: Room Conversation with Father Bernard](spoken/1973/730716r2.lon)**
> Here in this material world we worship Lakṣmī, goddess of fortune to get some opulence and that also, that Lakṣmī does not stay very long. Just like this house belonged to some Lord family. Lakṣmī, but now it does not belong to that man. It has, it is transferred to somebody else therefore Lakṣmī's another name is *Cañcala*—restless. Today the riches are with me, tomorrow with you, next day with him. It does not remain, in another place it is described just like lightning. Lightning in this cloud, and immediately this cloud, again this cloud. Like this. *Cañcala*, this is called *cañcala*—restless. Does not remain in one place permanently. But so far Kṛṣṇa is concerned not only they remain there permanently but with great respect, for Kṛṣṇa. They are always anxious that Kṛṣṇa may not give us up. *Lakṣmī-sahasra-śata-sambhrama-sevyamānaṁ*. In this material world Lakṣmī, goddess of fortune is worshipped even by Brahmā and what to speak of ordinary living entities. But in the spiritual world Lakṣmī serves the Supreme Personality of Godhead, with all respect.
> He is so perfect and complete, even the whole thing is taken from you... Him. Still, He is complete. He never deteriorates, *abhayākāya* [?]—indestructible; unfinishable—this is God. His energies are unfinishable. He is not in want of anything, complete. *Ātmārāma*—complete in Himself. He doesn't require anyone's help. So, we worship Kṛṣṇa. He does not require our service, He is complete. But he is so kind that even we offer our service, very insignificant in His unlimited relationship. A still because a devotee offers something in faith and love, He accepts it. That is His position; He is not in want.

**[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750716mw.sf)**
> These are your unhappiness. Try to solve it. And that they are carefully avoiding. They cannot stop death, neither birth, nor old age, nor disease. And during the short period of life, birth and death, they are making big, big buildings, and next time he is becoming one rat within the buildings. [laughter] Nature. You cannot avoid the nature's law. As you cannot avoid death, similarly, nature will give you another body. Become a tree in this university. Stand up for five thousand years. You wanted to be naked. Now nobody will object. You stand here naked.
---
**[1975: Press Conference](spoken/1975/750716pc.sf)**
> If there is no attempt to understand what is God and what is His order and how we are acting, what is the goal of our life, then where is religion? That is not religion. Religion means these four principle: what is God, what we are, what is our relationship with God, and act accordingly and achieve the goal of life. This is religion. So any religious system which does not consider all these things, that is not religion. That has been explained in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, kaitavaḥ.* Kaitavaḥ* means cheating. Religion means these things. Wherever these things are there, that is religion, these enquiries. This is the subject matter of *Vedānta-sūtra,* where it is said, athāto brahma-jijñāsā: "Now the human life is meant for enquiring about the Supreme." So that is religion.
> "You produce sufficient quantity of food grains." *Annād bhavanti bhūtāni.* Then both the animals and man will sufficiently eat, and they will be satisfied. What is the wrong there? You must have sufficient food. Then *annād bhavanti bhūtāni.* And *anna,* producing *anna,* you require cloud in the sky. And that is produced by *yajña.* So one after another. So people must be satisfied first of all by eating sumptuously. So instead of producing food grains, you are very much busy for producing motor tires. So motor tire will not make the hungry people satisfied. So everything is there, practical, whatever is advised in the *Bhagavad-gītā.*
---
**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.31](spoken/1975/750716sb.sf)**
> So one point is very important. People are sometimes amazed, "Where is the soul?" Now it is clearly said here, *hṛdayāt:* "from the core of the heart." Therefore soul is existing within the heart. And the Paramātmā is also existing. The *yogīs,* they want to see. Although they are, Paramātmā and *jīvātmā,* sitting side by side, and He is dictating, but on account of our foolishness we cannot see Him, neither hear Him. *Antar-bahir.*. He is within and He is without, but unfortunate as we are, we cannot see Him either within or without. How it is possible? Just like a family member, your father or brother, is playing on the stage, but you cannot see him. Somebody is pointing out, "Here is your brother, dancing." You cannot see him. *Naṭo nāṭyadharo yathā*. Just like a person dressed in dramatic performance, his relative cannot see him, similarly, Kṛṣṇa is everywhere, *aṇḍāntara-stha-paramāṇu-cayāntara-stham* [Bs. 5.35].
> Everyone is trying to become fortunate. Now, Cāṇakya Paṇḍita gives three things, formula, "If you want to be fortunate, then do these three things." What is that? "Do not give any credit to the rascal." That is first qualification. Don't be carried away by the rascal. *Mūrkhā yatra na pūjyante.* If you worship a rascal, then your life is spoiled. You must worship a really learned representative of God. That is very good. And *dhānyaṁ yatra susañcitam:* "Food grains, they are properly stocked." Not that for your foodstuff, getting your food grain or earning your livelihood, you have to go hundred miles, fifty miles. No. At home, you produce your food grain and stock it. In India still, they work for three months during this rainy season, and they get their food grains for the whole year. You can save time so nicely. So these things are required for happy home. There must be food grains. You cannot be happy without eating. That is not possible. *Annād bhavanti.* Kṛṣṇa also says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, annād bhavanti bhūtāni*. If you have got sufficient *anna,* eatables, foodstuff, then you become happy.
---
**[1976: Interview with George Orwell Religious Editor of the Associated Press](spoken/1976/760716iv.ny)**
> They do not understand that we are talking on the spiritual platform and they are on the material, bodily platform. Therefore they find contradiction. One has to be little sober to understand this movement and what platform we are speaking.
---
**[1976: Conversation After Interview with Religious Editor, Associated Press](spoken/1976/760716r1.ny)**
> There is no need of hundreds of rascal child, children. One is sufficient. *Varam eka. Varaṁ guṇī-putra,* he must be qualified. And who is *guṇī?* Who is a devotee and learned scholar. *Ko'rtha putreṇa jātena, yo na vidyā na bhaktimān.* What is the use of such rascal child if he's not a devotee, neither learned? *Kānena cakṣuṣā kiṁ cakṣuḥ pīḍaiva kevalam.* [Cāṇakya Paṇḍita] What is the use of blind eyes? It is simply troublesome. So let there be one child, but he must be like Prahlāda, like Dhruva Mahārāja, and then child production is beneficial. Otherwise, if we beget children like cats and dogs, what is the use? That is Cāṇakya Paṇḍita's instruction. Another example is given: *ekaś candras tamo hanti na ca tārāḥ sahasraśaḥ.* If there is one moon in the sky, it is sufficient to give light to the whole sky. What is the use of millions of stars? So, it is very good that you can take care of one child and make him a great devotee and learned scholar. Then it is successful.
