# July 15 ## Spoken on July 15 *Lectures from this day: 10 recordings* --- **[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 4.6–8](spoken/1966/660715bg.ny.md)** > So here Lord says, *yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati*. Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati* means that whenever there is some discrepancy in the modes of rendering service of the living entities. *Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati. Dharmasya* means, I have explained to you, *dharmasya* means my real nature. *Dharma* means my real nature. *Dharma* is not a faith. *Dharma* is not a designated faith. *Dharma* is my real nature. > Now, we are now in contact with inferior nature. That is our conditional life. We are also su... Actually, as spirit soul, we belong to the superior nature. Just like God is superior nature. *Prakṛtiṁ svām adhiṣṭhāya.* The Lord says that "I come down, I incarnate Myself in My superior nature." *Svām adhiṣṭhāya.* But what is our position? Although we belong to the superior nature, we have come to this material world not in superior nature, but we are in contact with the inferior nature. Therefore death takes place. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.1.5](spoken/1972/720715sb.lon)** > So our ideal is we are fighting with *māyā*, and so the fighting will conquer over *māyā* when we see that we are not disturbed by these four processes: eating, sleeping, mating and defending. This is the test. Nobody has to take certificate from anyone as how he is spiritually advancing. He can test himself: "How far I have conquered over these four things: eating, sleeping, mating and defending." That's all. That is the test. So it is not required that don't eat, don't sleep, don't..., but minimize it. At least regulate it. Try. This is called austerity, *tapasya*. I want to sleep, but still I shall regulate it. I want to eat, but I must regulate it. I want sense enjoyment, so I must regulate it. That is old Vedic civilization. > But in this age there is no guarantee whether we are going to live up to sixty years old age. So sometimes, younger generation also offered *sannyāsa*, because Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted at the age of twenty-four years. We are not of course imitating Caitanya Mahāprabhu, but for executing Caitanya Mahāprabhu's mission, if we are sincerely working for Him, then we can take *sannyāsa* at an early age. That... When one is actually a *sannyāsa*, a *sannyāsī*, master of the senses, he can be addressed as *gosvāmī* or *svāmī*. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 1.15](spoken/1973/730715bg.lon)** > Therefore our aim of life should be to understand that every..., to know... This is self-realization, that "Everything belongs to God. Nothing belongs to us." This is self-realization. I also belong to God. My this body made of five elements, gross body—*bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ*, earth, water, fire, air, sky—this is gross body. And subtle body, *khaṁ mano buddhir eva:* mind, intelligence, ego. These eight. Kṛṣṇa says, *bhinnā me prakṛtir aṣṭadhā:* "These eight kinds of *prakṛti,* they are My energy. They are My energy." So this whole universe is creation of Kṛṣṇa's material energy. > Buddhi-yogaṁ dadāmi taṁ yena mām upayānti te. Teṣāṁ nitya-yuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam*.* Anyone who is engaged in His service with love and affection, *teṣām,* not all, not all... Because not all, not everyone wants to serve Him. Everyone wants to become God, imitator, imitation. Therefore they say, "Why Kṛṣṇa shall be alone God? I am God." You are god, that's all right. But you are not the Supreme God. Why you forget that? Above you... You may be a god at home of your wife, but when you go to your office, you are not god; your master is god. He directs you to do something, you have to do it. --- **[1973: Room Conversation With Three College Students](spoken/1973/730715r1.lon)** > So when Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā,* "These material elements," *bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ*, "earth, water, fire, air, they are My energies," so if one has studied Kṛṣṇa, then as soon as He sees a great ocean, He sees Kṛṣṇa: "Oh, this is Kṛṣṇa's energy." As soon as sees a big anything, fire, water, anything, He sees Kṛṣṇa, nothing but Kṛṣṇa, because He knows. Exactly in the same way, as soon as you feel heat, you know that there is fire. You don't require to see the fire. But if you feel, "Oh, it is hot. Oh, there must be fire." This is studying Kṛṣṇa. And this is called Kṛṣṇa consciousness: to feel the presence of Kṛṣṇa everywhere. > Now in India, the big personalities in the modern age, Śaṅkarācārya, Rāmānujācārya, Madhvācārya, Viṣṇu Svāmī, Caitanya, all of them accept *kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam.* Formerly, five thousand years ago, Vyāsadeva; before that, Nārada. Everyone accepts Kṛṣṇa the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So there is no question about Kṛṣṇa's being the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Why? Why? Because these people accept, the *śāstra* says, the *Vedas* says; therefore He is the Supreme Personality. --- **[1974: Departure Address](spoken/1974/740715dp.la)** > Thank you very much.* [break] > So, you are engaged in the service of Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava. He's present here. And I am very glad that you are doing very nice. Keep the standard. This Deity worship and chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa *mahā-mantra...* Be always engaged in this business. It is a very important business. Kṛṣṇa says that *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru, mām evaiṣyasi asaṁśayaḥ*. Our mission is to go back to home, back to Godhead. So it is not very difficult thing. Very easy. But we do not want it. That is the difficulty. Otherwise, the matter is very simple. Kṛṣṇa says four things, that "Always think of Me..." Now, here is Kṛṣṇa, Rādhārāṇī, Kṛṣṇa, standing before you. Don't think that this is idol. No. Kṛṣṇa is present before you in that form to show you favor that you can handle with Kṛṣṇa. You can dress Him. You can give Him for eating. You can... To give you facilities. But Kṛṣṇa is here, and Rādhārāṇī is here. > So to think of Kṛṣṇa and to become devotee of Kṛṣṇa is not at all difficult task. Then... *Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī:* "Worship Me." So here is the chance for worshiping Kṛṣṇa. *Ārā..., bhoga-ārātrika.* Temple. Keep the temple very cleansed. Dress Kṛṣṇa daily. You also dress nicely, take your bath, be pure. So *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru* : "And just offer obeisances to Me." Even the child can do. They are doing it. It is not at all difficult. But simply by executing these four principles, Kṛṣṇa says, gives assurance, *mām evaiṣyasi:* "You come to Me." --- **[1975: Arrival Lecture](spoken/1975/750715ar.sf)** > If we want to study Vedic literature, that is very good. That is sound footing. So we have already got fifty books. You study. Become very great scholar in philosophy, in religion, in sociology. Everything is there in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam—*politics also. And you become perfect man, with full knowledge. And if you think that you have no time, you are not so good scholar, you cannot read all these books, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Either way you will become perfect, either both or at least one. If you cannot read books, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. You will be perfect. And if you read books and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, that is very good. But there is no loss. If you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa *mahā-mantra* but you cannot read books, there is no harm. There is no loss. That chanting is sufficient. But if you read, then you will be able to defend yourself from the opposing parties. That will help you preaching work. Because in the preaching work you have to answer so many question, you have to meet so many opposing elements, so if you are strong in your position by reading books, Vedic literature, then you become very, very favorite to Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa says, *na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ*. *Ya imaṁ paramaṁ guhyaṁ mad-bhakteṣu abhidhāsyati*. Anyone who preaches this confidential knowledge, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*, if he is ably fit to preach this message to the world, then immediately he becomes very, very much recognized by the Supreme Lord. *Na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ.* Kṛṣṇa says. > A *guru* is worshiped... Just like my disciples, they are offering respect exactly like God. That is their duty. *Sākṣād-dharitvena samasta-śāstraiḥ:* "All the *śāstra* recommends that *guru* should be respected as good as God." But that does not mean *guru* is foolishly thinking, "I am God." *Sākṣād-dharitvena samasta-śāstrair uktaḥ. Uktaḥ* means "said," "it is recommended." *Tathā bhāvyata eva sadbhiḥ:* "Those who are exalted, advanced, they accept this truth, that *guru* should be respected as good as God." But why he is respected as such? Because *kintu prabhor yaḥ priya eva tasya:* "Because he is very, very dear to God." The *guru* will never think that "My disciples are worshiping me exactly like God; therefore I have become God." He is not *guru;* he is rascal. *Guru* is always in the position of servant. And because he is the most confidential servant of Kṛṣṇa, therefore he is to be respected as good as Kṛṣṇa. Because in our present position we cannot see Kṛṣṇa, but Kṛṣṇa sends His representative; therefore he is respected as Kṛṣṇa. Now, how one can become *guru* and representative of Kṛṣṇa? Everyone will say, "I am a representative of Kṛṣṇa. I am *guru*." No. That is enunciated by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu says, *āmāra ājñāya guru hañā tāra ei deśa* : "You just become *guru* on My order." So *guru* means who is carrying out the order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, not a self-made *guru. Guru* means the most confidential servant of Kṛṣṇa or Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the same thing. He is *guru*. --- **[1976: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.108–109](spoken/1976/760715cc.ny)** > So *māyā* is very strong, that these mistakes continue even one is very advanced so-called spiritually. No. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu touches the main point immediately with His instruction. That is Caitanya Mahāprabhu's philosophy. Where Kṛṣṇa says the last word, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja...*, He is talking on the position, He is Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is asking, demanding, "You rascal, give up everything. Just surrender to Me. Then you'll be happy." This is the last instruction of *Bhagavad-gītā.* Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the same Kṛṣṇa but acting as devotee of Kṛṣṇa; therefore He is speaking the same thing. Kṛṣṇa said, "You surrender," and Caitanya Mahāprabhu said that "Every living entity is the servant of Kṛṣṇa." That means he must surrender. Servant's business is to surrender, not to argue with the master or to claim that "I am equal with you." These are all fanatic, mad proposal. > So *bhedābheda-prakāśa.* So the living entity is simultaneously one and different. The two philosophies are going on. One philosophy, Māyāvāda—*ahaṁ brahmāsmi,* miscalculation, *so 'ham*—this is to become one. And another philosophy, Vaiṣṇava philosophy—that we are different. But Caitanya Mahāprabhu says that both are true. *Bhedābheda-prakāśa.* A living entity is one with God as well as different from God. *Bhedābheda-prakāśa.* One? How one? Because Kṛṣṇa says that "Living entities are My part and parcel." Just like this hand, this finger, is part and parcel of my body, so therefore it is one. But the finger is not the whole body. Different. It is very simple thing. *Bhedābheda-prakāśa.* Anyone can understand. The finger... The tree... Just like the leaf, the twigs, the flowers, the fruits, they are all tree, but at the same time, it is not tree: it is leaf, it is branch, it is twig, it is flower. It is very simple philosophy. Caitanya Mahāprabhu explained, *taṭasthā-śakti,* marginal. Marginal means the living entity has to become servant. That is his position. *Jīvera svarūpa haya nitya kṛṣṇa dāsa.* But when the servant wants to become master, he is under the clutches of *māyā.* And when he understands that "I am not master; I am servant," he is under Kṛṣṇa. That is *taṭasthā. Taṭasthā* means marginal. That *taṭa, taṭa* means the beach. Sometimes the beach is covered with water and sometimes it is land. That is called *taṭasthā:* sometimes land, sometimes water. --- **[1976: Ride on Rādhā-Dāmodara Bus to Gītā-nagarī Farm](spoken/1976/760715cv.ny)** > Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: [bus now stationary] This electrical system, this one works when you plug the bus in. Like if you are at a campground, then these go on, and these are very bright, fluorescent. And then when traveling, this system works. Therefore we have two separate light switch panels. One is for when we plug into the regular current, and the other one is on the road. The kitchen is very nice. I wanted to show you the kitchen, Prabhupāda. It's a very different kitchen than the one that you saw originally. This is a very big kitchen. Five men can stand there. Very big. Cooking, very convenient. We've improved the buses since the last time you were here. > Ataeva māyā tāre deya saṁsāra-duḥkha.* You continue to suffer. They are missing the point, struggling for existence. They have created this civilization, material civilization, full of factories. It is simply suffering, nothing but suffering. Maybe the factory proprietor may get some profit, but actually it is a place of suffering. Those who are working in the factory, they are simply suffering. --- **[1977: Room Conversation Māyāpur attack](spoken/1977/770715r1.vrn)** >infirmary and they come in and they... I mean, what kind of... I never heard of that. Someone is in the infirmary being treated and they beat him worse. And the newspapers all report it the other way. --- ## Letters on July 15 *Letters from this day: 18* --- **[1968: Letter to Syamasundara](letters/1968/680715_syamasundara)** > If you would not have constructed such a nice ratha (car) in such a short time, it would not have been possible to perform the grand festival. --- **[1969: Letter to Jadurani](letters/1969/690715_jadurani)** > I have already advised you this in a note enclosed with Tape #14 of *Krishna.* So read the Krishna tape transcriptions and draw pictures as many as possible.
