## Spoken on July 3
*Lectures from this day: 13 recordings*

**[1970: Initiations Śrī Raṅga, Romaharṣaṇa, Śrīdhara and Gopāla](spoken/1970/700703in.la)**
> Just like Kṛṣṇa says Arjuna, that *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja* "You just surrender unto Me." He's saying. Not that by force making him surrender. That kind of surrender will not stand. We should not canvass. Let him become attracted by Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, and he personally asks for *harer nāma* [*Cc Ādi* 7.76]. Just like Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says, *bhakativinoda prabhu-caraṇe pariyā[*Jīv Jāgo*].*
> By pleasing the spiritual master we please the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore if his order is disobeyed, if he is displeased, then *yasyāprasādād na gatiḥ kuto 'pi.* If he is displeased, then he has no shelter. He's thrown in the wilderness. Therefore this should be strictly followed. Then next?

**[1970: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.1.1–6 [Partially Recorded](spoken/1970/700703sb.la)**
> So we discussed which verse? *Śrotavyādīni rājendra nṛṇāṁ santi sahasraśaḥ*. This verse we discussed yesterday, that "Those who are materialistic persons, they have got hundreds and thousands of topics," and, although we are in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, because we are in the material world, sometimes we have to deal with many unnecessary talks. But mind that our unnecessary talks and others' unnecessary talks are not the same, because we sometimes talk unnecessarily, but the aim is Kṛṣṇa. Just like Battlefield of Kurukṣetra. The *Bhagavad-gītā* begins,
> The topics began from the war field, *kuru-kṣetre, dharma-kṣetre.* But it is *dharma-kṣetra.* "Why *dharma-kṣetra*? It is battlefield." Because Kṛṣṇa is there. Kṛṣṇa is conducting the battle, therefore it is *dharma-kṣetra. Dharma-kṣetra* means religious place, pilgrimage. [break] [end]

**[1971: Initiation Lecture](spoken/1971/710703in.la)**
> But those who are intelligent, they will see the pangs of birth and death, not the king's body, not the dog's body. Disease is disease, not that if the king is diseased he is not suffering. When there is disease, the king will suffer, a dog will suffer. So this is our disease, because naturally we are spirit soul, but somehow or other we have come in contact with the material nature and getting repeatedly different types of body. Therefore our main business is how to get out of this disease, and that is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. If you become Kṛṣṇa conscious, then you get out of it. *Tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma, mām eti*, Kṛṣṇa says.
> This is the nature. But another side is that he wants to live, because actually he does not die. By nature he is eternal; therefore he does not like to die, or he remembers his eternity. So we are eternal: *na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre*. It is described in the *Bhagavad-gītā* that we do not die.

**[1972: Lecture](spoken/1972/720703dp.la)**
> In the meantime, you go on holding this class, morning, regularly, one *śloka* from *Bhāgavata;* thoroughly discuss for one hour; *kīrtana.*
Besides that, our other regular program should go on. Nothing should be hampered. That is my request. Live peacefully and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.

**[1972: Room Conversation and Interview](spoken/1972/720703r1.ny)**
> So however carefully or expertly I manage with the instruments, they are themselves imperfect. Therefore Vedic *śāstra* says that to understand the divine you must have divine mercy. You must possess. *Athāpi te deva padāmbuja-dvaya-prasāda-leśānugṛhīta eva hi jānāti tattvaṁ*. One can understand the truth by the grace of... So searching after divine means we must search after the grace of the divine. Just like a very big man, just like President Nixon. So I am speculating that President Nixon is like that, like that, like this, his function is like that, he eats like this, he sleeps like this. That is speculation. But if I hear directly from President Nixon or his representative, very confidential representative, then it is perfect knowledge.
> The sun is very big, bigger, fourteen hundred thousand times bigger than this earth, but with our imperfect eyes we see just like a disk. If we remain satisfied with this imperfect knowledge, then we remain in darkness. We have to know the sun from the astronomer. They have calculated. They know. In this way knowledge, perfect knowledge, can be attained—when it is received through the perfect knower, not by speculation. That speculation means I shall speculate with limited mind and imperfect senses.

**[1974: Bhagavad-gītā 17.1–3](spoken/1974/740703bg.hon)**
> Therefore it is said... Now, *tri-vidhā bhavati śraddhā:* "This *śraddhā,* this faith," Kṛṣṇa says, "there are three kinds." *Tri-vidhā bhavati śraddhā. Tri-vidhā bhavati śraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāva-jā. Dehinām.* Always remember, *dehinām* means the possessor, the owner of this body. Therefore the owner is different from the body. Those who are under the conception that there is no owner, and the body is everything, they are less than *tamo-guṇa.* Actually animals. They have been described as being animal. Those who are thinking like the dog that "I am this body..." The dog is also thinking, "I am this body," and a man is also thinking, "I am this body." Then where is the difference between the dog and the man? When man comes to the understanding that "I am not this body; I am soul," then knowledge begins. Before that, he is ignorant like animal. *Yasyātma-buddhiḥ kuṇape tri-dhātuke*.
> Little you can offer, little water. Where is the difficulty, Deity worship? You can worship Deity anywhere also. In a small box you can keep the Deity. And after taking bath you offer something. If you have nothing to offer, offer a little *tulasī* leaf. Or any leaf. That Kṛṣṇa says, *patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me.* The real thing is whether you are lover and devotee. Then Kṛṣṇa will accept anything you offer. It is not you have to cook very sumptuously, very rich food, then Kṛṣṇa you'll offer. Kṛṣṇa is not after your food. Kṛṣṇa is after your devotion and faith. That can be created anywhere if you are actually sincere.

**[1975: Arrival](spoken/1975/750703ar.chi)**
> Unless he'll take to God consciousness, all this rascaldom, so-called advancement of civilization, all condemned, everything. All rascals. So why we will not..., will there be crime? There must be. This is the result of modern civilization, crime. You cannot check it unless you take to Kṛṣṇa cons... They are all violating the laws of nature. Nature brings you from evolutionary process to the human life, and if we misuse, then we suffer. This life is specially meant for understanding God. Athāto brahma-jijñāsā. [*Vedānta-sūtra* 1.1.1] This is the only business. *Jīvasya tattva-jijñāsā na yaś ceha karmabhiḥ. Jīvasya tattva-jijñāsā.* Find out this verse.
> "Life's desires should never be aimed at gratifying the senses. One should desire to live only because human life enables one to inquire about the Absolute Truth. This should be the goal of all works."

**[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750703mw.den)**
> Good and bad is exemplified: just like I catch you and put down the water, and when you are suffocated, I raise you little, and you say, "Ohhh. [laughter] It is very nice." But you do not know again you are going to be... You see? This "good," "bad," is here like that. He is put into the water and suffocated, and when he is taken out little, he says, "Oh, it is very good. It is very good." The rascal does not know the next moment he is going to be again drowned in that way. That is going on.
> Then he began to... First day he did not supply salt. So one son-in-law say, "Oh, they are now disrespectful. They have not given salt." So one went away. And next day, something else, something else, something else, shortened, shortened. So those who were intelligent, they went away. The last one, he was not going. Then his brother-in-laws thought that "Give him good beating." Then he went away. *Prahāreṇa dhanañjayaḥ.* Others, those who were intelligent, they, when they thought that "Now there is disrespectful dealing, they are not giving everything," so they gradually... The last one, he was a rascal. He was beaten severely; then he went away.

**[1976: Morning Walk [Partially Recorded](spoken/1976/760703mw.wdc)**
> That's nice. [break] ...trees very long?
---
**[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/760703r1.wdc)**
> Hare Kṛṣṇa.
[break] ...to purchase it? And he has to sell to us. Nobody will purchase.
