# July 2 ## Spoken on July 2 *Lectures from this day: 15 recordings* --- **[1968: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.8](spoken/1968/680702sb.mon)** > So your statement, that "Why one should bother with these things?" that's a very nice proposal. Why? There is no necessity. Suppose if I can manufacture some *rasagullā,* what is the worth of this *rasagullā?* Oh, we can, if we spend ten cents, we can make it. So why shall I waste my energy for manufacturing *rasagullā* in the *yoga* system? Actually, therefore, Kṛṣṇa says that the perfection of, real perfection of *yoga,* the first-class *yogī* is he who is always thinking of Kṛṣṇa. That is first class. He is recommended. > That is the conclusion of *Bhāgavata. Svanuṣṭhitasya dharmasya saṁsiddhir hari-toṣaṇam*. You... How you can test that the particular engagement in which you are occupied, whether it is successful or not? How it is to be tested? The *Bhāgavata* gives you the formula. What is that, the formula? Now, *saṁsiddhir hari-toṣaṇam*. You just try to see whether by your work Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Lord, has become satisfied. If you see that He is satisfied, then whatever work you are doing, either you are philosopher or a businessman or a scientist or anything, politician—there are so many occupational duties—but you have to test whether that is giving you real perfection. That test is that you have to see whether by your activity the Supreme Lord is satisfied. Then... --- **[1970: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.1.1–4](spoken/1970/700702sb.la)** > Śrotavyādīni rājendra nṛṇāṁ santi sahasraśa:* "My dear king...," Śukadeva Gosvāmī is speaking to King Parīkṣit, that "there are many subject matters for the persons who are materialistic." What sort of... Why they are engaged in so many topics? *Ātma-tattvam apaśyatām.* They do not see what is self-realization. *Apaśyatām ātma-tattvam*. > One talk, Kṛṣṇa: Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma... That will make you satisfied. *Yayātmā suprasīdati.* If you want actually happiness, then you stick to these Kṛṣṇa consciousness topics. Don't bring in anything other, else. Then that will become *gṛheṣu gṛha-medhinām, apaśyatām ātma-tattvam*. --- **[1971: Caitanya-bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 4.126](spoken/1971/710702cb.la)** > But because President Nixon goes to, I mean to say, supervise the activities in the prison house, if a prisoner, ordinary criminal prisoner, thinks, "Oh, here is Mr. President Nixon, so it is very nice; we are also in the same position," no, that is foolishness. That is said in the *Bhagavad-gītā*, *avajānanti māṁ mūḍhāmānuṣīṁ tanum āśritam*. Kṛṣṇa says, "Because I am acting just like a human being, the foolish, rascal man, they consider that I am one of them." > Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is so nice that the people who think that this humanitarian work is very valuable, that is automatically done. But at the same time we are giving something which will solve the problems of his life. If one become trained up in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and become a pure devotee, then the effect will be *tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti kaunteya* : "My dear Arjuna, such person, Kṛṣṇa conscious devotee, after leaving this body," *tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti*, "he doesn't get any more this rebirth in material body. His rebirth is in spiritual body." --- **[1971: Initiation Lecture [Partially Recorded](spoken/1971/710702in.la)** > This is the sum total meaning of this Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra.* Simply praying, "Please engage me," that is real profit. Not that "Please give me, instead of hundred dollars, give me thousand dollars." No. This is not pure devotion. You should all understand this. *Anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam*. Completely freed from any material desire. That is pure devotion. That will make you happy. > So similarly, Kṛṣṇa's name, we should not try to exact some material profit by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra.* That is not pure devotion. *Sarva...* What is called? *Sarvopādhi-vinirmuktam*. Anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam* [Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu*1.1.11].* We shall simply aspire to serve Kṛṣṇa. The Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra* means, "*He kṛṣṇa,* my Lord Kṛṣṇa." *He,* Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare, "O the energy of Kṛṣṇa, O Kṛṣṇa, please engage me in Your service." --- **[1971: Room Conversation with Govinda dāsī and Gaurasundara](spoken/1971/710702r1.la)** > Therefore the service attitude is the only process to elevate oneself in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. And this automatically. Why these girls and these boys, why you are all trying to serve? That is natural. It is natural. Kṛṣṇa is not directly contacted, so Kṛṣṇa's representative that, that attitude: "Let me serve to the servant of Kṛṣṇa." That is good policy. And we have to accept this. We cannot deny it. The service spirit will be... Otherwise I don't require anyone's service, by living alone. And now we are creating so many servants of Kṛṣṇa, when they offer some service, we accept. [indistinct]. > So everyone is servant. Somebody is servant of Kṛṣṇa, somebody is servant of sex. If you remain servant of the senses, you are never happy. If you became servant of Kṛṣṇa... You have to remain servant; you cannot be master. Rather, if you serve Kṛṣṇa then you become master of your senses. That is *gosvāmī.* To become servant of Kṛṣṇa means master of senses. So the senses cannot now order, "You do this." "No, I am engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service." Therefore he becomes master. Then he becomes *gosvāmī. Go* means senses; *svāmī* means master. When you become master of the senses, then you're *gosvāmī.* And when you become servant of the senses, you are *godāsa.* --- **[1972: Bhagavad-gītā 7.1](spoken/1972/720702bg.sd)** > But one who is twenty-four hours thinking of Kṛṣṇa or Viṣṇu, how far he is advanced, that can be imagined. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says personally, *yoginām api sarveṣām : "Of all the *yogīs*." > Therefore, we sometimes see that one who has taken to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, still, he is committing something wrong. But that is not very..., that is not a case of discouragement. You stick to this principle. *Kṣipraṁ bhavati dharmātmā*. *Api cet su-durācāraḥ*. --- **[1974: Room Conversation with Scientists](spoken/1974/740702r1.mel)** > "Now let us look into a few samples from the Lord's creation, and upon contemplating these exemplary aspects, one should develop a better understanding and appreciation of the existence of the most powerful brain, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa. The sun that we see daily is the nearest star. It is one hundred earth diameters across and is ninety-three million miles away from the earth. Every day the sun supplies the solar system with a tremendous amount of heat, light and energy. 'The very tiny fraction of the sun's energy that falls on the earth—estimated at about five parts in a hundred million million—is about 100,000 times greater than all the energy used in the world's industries. The total energy the sun emits in a single second would be sufficient to keep a 1 kilowatt electric fire burning for 10,000 million million years. Put in a different way, the energy the sun emits in one second is greater than the whole amount of energy the human species has consumed throughout its entire history.' Yet it is only one of the countless number of stars floating in the sky in every direction. With the material scientific brain, the thermal, electrical and nuclear powerhouses have been made. These can supply heat, light and energy to a small, limited extent, but Lord Kṛṣṇa is supplying the whole planet with an unlimited source of energy just from one sun. Kṛṣṇa says: 'The splendor of the sun, which dissipates the darkness of this whole world, comes from Me. And the splendor of the moon and the splendor of fire are also from Me.' The planets are revolving in a systematic path around the sun. Even within the smallest atom, the electrons and the protons are orbiting around the nucleus in a perfect manner. > "Thus, from the submicroscopic realm of the atom to the expanding reaches of the galactic objects, this material universe is running like intricate, well-oiled clockwork according to great natural physical laws and principles. Scientists have gained great acclaim for making a few spaceships, whereas Kṛṣṇa effortlessly produces gigantic spaceships, such as planets and stars, which are perfectly equipped and maintained. In *Bhagavad-gītā* Kṛṣṇa says, *gām āviśya ca bhūtāni dhārayāmy aham ojāsa:* 'I enter into each planet, and by My energy they stay in orbit.' The laws made by the supreme brain always remain perfect; they are never violated. We never see the sun rising in the west and setting in the east. The colorful rainbow that we observe when the sun is shining during a shower is only visible when the sun is behind the observer, due to the laws of refraction. Also, each year the seasons change quite periodically, producing symptoms unique to each season. --- **[1974: Room Conversation, Bhagavad-gītā 16.7–23](spoken/1974/740702r2.mel)** > What is the use of...? Why should we go to research? Everything is there. Our position is very safe. We get the perfect knowledge without wasting our time. We take from Kṛṣṇa, that's all. Finish. We know everything. Just like so many scientists, so many psychology, psychiatrist and religionist, they come to me, but I am neither of them. I never was a scientist, neither I am a psychologist, neither a psychiatrist, neither this or that. But I speak on the strength of *Bhagavad-gītā;* I defeat them. It is practical. So many people came to me, but nobody went unharmed. Yes. > "There is an energy which can create, maintain and destroy the whole cosmic manifestation." *Sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya-sādhana-śaktir ekā,* one. There is one energy. "That energy is working just like shadow under the direction of Kṛṣṇa." That is big energy, but that energy... Just like atomic energy, big energy, but it is done by a scientist, not that the ingredients automatically mix together and become an atomic... No. That is not possible. Big, big brain, scientist, they are dealing. Similarly, this big energy—creation, maintenance and destruction of nature—that nature is called Durgā. Durgā. *Duḥ. Duḥ* means difficult, and *gā* means going, or to understand. To understand the laws of material nature is very difficult. That is called Durgā. Or *durgā* means... *Durgā, durgā* means this is like a fort. We are kept within this, and the superintendent is Durgā. Therefore Durgā's picture is ten hands, ten directions, with different kinds of weapon protecting. *Sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya-sādhana-śaktir ekā chāyeva yasya bhuvanāni bibharti durgā, icchānu..*. Now the conclusion, *icchānurūpam api yasya ca ceṣṭate sā:* "She is working not independently; according to the desire of somebody else." Who is that somebody? *Govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi:* "That is Govinda. I am worshiping Him." And this is confirmed in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750702mw.den)** > Māyāvāda. They are fools, *mūḍhā. Māyayāpahṛta-jñānā,* they are described in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* Māyāvādī means *māyayāpahṛta-jñānā:* "Their knowledge has been taken away by *māyā.*" Fools. Either you call them fool or call them lowest of the mankind or the most sinful, whatever way you can call, they are like that. All good qualifications. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu has warned, *māyāvādī-bhāṣya śunile haya sarva-nāśa* : "If you hear from Māyāvādī, then your spiritual life is finished." It's so dangerous. > And if you speculate, "Kṛṣṇa may be like this," it is all nonsense. Come to the stage when Kṛṣṇa will appear before you, and you will see what is Kṛṣṇa. Be qualified to that position. Māyāvādīs, they are speculating simply, "God may be like this." Why "God may be like this"? God is factual, Kṛṣṇa. Therefore they cannot understand Kṛṣṇa. [break]...plane crash took place in John Kennedy? --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.19](spoken/1975/750702sb.den)** > So we have to give up this body and we have to accept another body. So labor or work for such body which will no more be material body. This is intelligence. *Mad-yājino 'pi yānti mām .* Next body means as we are acting, according to the resultant action of our activities we get next body. *Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur deha upapattaye*. How you get next life? In this life we are acting in a certain way, and by nature we shall get a similar body. Nature's law is so perfect that the law you... Just like infection. I have several times explained: you infect some disease, the disease will come out. Not that somebody will come to award you the disease. By nature's way it will come out. If you say that "Somebody will come," no. The nature's law is so perfect. Just like if you touch fire, immediately it will burn, not that you have to wait. Similarly, nature's law. It is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā, prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ*. As you are associating with different modes of material nature, you are creating your future. > So *sakṛd api kṛṣṇa manaḥ.* Mind has to be fixed up to something. The *yogīs, karmīs,* the *jñānīs* and the *bhaktas.* The *karmīs,* their mind is fixed up, "Where to get money? Where to get money?" That's all. This is *karmī.* Just to live comfortably, enjoy sense gratification, this is *karmī.* And *jñānī* means they want to... Because they are disgusted. They are better than the *karmīs.* They want to merge into the impersonal Brahman effulgence, *jñānī.* And *yogī,* they... Actual, their business is, *yogī, dhyānāvasthita-tad-gatena manasā paśyanti yaṁ yoginaḥ*. The *yogīs,* they are always in meditation and thinking of Kṛṣṇa. That is real *yogī,* not to show some gymnastic feats. These things are required to concentrate the mind. But where to concentrate the mind? Concentrate the mind in the Supreme Soul, or Kṛṣṇa, or Viṣṇu. That is *yoga* system. --- **[1976: Car Journey and Arrival](spoken/1976/760702ar.wdc)** > Not outside. Not like England, they have to import from... This is a very good example. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.6.19](spoken/1976/760702sb.nv)** > > na hy acyutaṁ prīṇayato > bahv-āyāso 'surātmajāḥ > ātmatvāt sarva-bhūtānāṁ > siddhatvād iha sarvataḥ > [[sb/7/6/19|[SB. 7.6.19] ]] To become a devotee of the Supreme Lord is not unnatural. It is very easy, natural thing. --- **[1977: Room Conversation with Mr. Myer](spoken/1977/770702r1.vrn)** > "This body will change." Do they take it seriously? So what is the use of their reading *Bhagavad-gītā*? Kṛṣṇa says, *tathā dehāntara, na hanyate hanyamāne*. Do they take seriously that "I am eternal. I do not die after the annihilation of the body. And the body will change. What I am going to do?" So this is going on, and still, they are... Gandhi is... "He is great student of *Bhagavad-gītā.*" He is... "Tilak is a great student." "Dr. Radhakrishnan..." All rascals. All rascals. They do not understand even one line. If they study only one line, they'll be able to bring a great transforming to the... Do you think they do understand this line? > Māyā* is so strong that untruthful things, we take it as truthful. Just like the modern scientists. These rascals, he could not, they cannot, they will never be able to produce life. Still, they are insisting: "Yes, we will do it. We can do." The whole world is full of rascals. What they cannot do, what they could not do, what they'll never be able to do... Still, they will persist. This is the difficulty. They have never gone to moon planet, their aeroplane. They cannot go anywhere. You have got plane. They are conditioned. And they are thinking, "We are free." Just like an animal is bound up in a plane, and he's going round, here and here. He's thinking, "The world is round. The world is round." He does not accept that "I am conditioned." They have got now aeroplane, jet plane and so many. Go anywhere. They cannot go. Still, they are proud: "We have measured." This dog's obstinacy of this modern world has killed the whole civilization. --- ## Letters on July 2 *Letters from this day: 9* --- **[1968: Letter to Satsvarupa](letters/1968/680702_satsvarupa)** > In the meantime in my last letter I requested you to see the District Director Mr. (223-2361) You know that I have sent him one letter of June 11, 1968 per Regd Post No. --- **[1969: Letter to Krsna Dasaa](letters/1969/690702_krsna_dasaa)** > After receiving your letter of July 2nd, as mentioned above, I have been anxiously awaiting to receive the ticket that you say you have sent. --- **[1969: Letter to Krsna Dasab](letters/1969/690702_krsna_dasab)** > Please let me know why Sivananda is leaving Hamburg all of a sudden.
