*Lectures from this day: 16 recordings*

**[1970: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.1.1](spoken/1970/700630sb.la)**
> We are always hearing. You have come here to hear something. Or if you go to some other political organization, there also you will hear. If you go to some scientific organization, there also you will hear. If you go to your school, your college, you will hear, because hearing is our process to acquire knowledge. Ah. So he says, *śrotavyādiṣu yaḥ paraḥ:* there are many subject matters for hearing, but this kind of hearing is the supermost, and it is approved by the self-realized person, and it is beneficial to the human society.
> Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇuṁ.* Therefore those who are not searching after Viṣṇu, or those who are not serious about becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious, or God conscious, they are simply after like that, mirage water in the desert. *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇuṁ durāśayā ye bahir-artha-māninaḥ andhā yathāndhair upanīyamānās*. Then what about these leaders? Everyone has got some leader—this political leader, that political leader; that religious leader, that philosophical leader, scientist leader—so many. They are leading common men.
---
**[1971: Room Conversation with Govinda Dāsī](spoken/1971/710630r1.la)**
> That is not possible. You cannot surpass Him in any way. That is ignorance. And He is the supreme; He surpasses anyone's intelligence. If we want to play a trick with Kṛṣṇa, He understands everything. *Vedāhaṁ samatītāni* : "I know everything." *Māṁ tu veda na kaścana*: "I know everyone, but nobody knows Me." That is the statement. So anyone who wants to serve Kṛṣṇa sincerely, his place is secure, [indistinct ].
> Dvandva-moha-nirmuktā* knows that everything is display of Kṛṣṇa's energy. Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa's energy, Kṛṣṇa's part and parcel, Kṛṣṇa's expansion, Kṛṣṇa's plenary portions, incarnation—everything Kṛṣṇa—one can understand when one is freed from all material sins. *Te dvandva-moha.* This is *moha. Moha* means to misunderstand that there is anything without Kṛṣṇa. That is *moha,* illusion.
---
**[1972: Bhagavad-gītā 7.1 & Initiations](spoken/1972/720630in.sd)**
> So these four pillars, in the beginning of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, when you are actually going to take Kṛṣṇa consciousness seriously... Just like some souls will be initiated today. This means that he is going to take Kṛṣṇa consciousness very serious. So one who is serious to take Kṛṣṇa consciousness, his first business is to break these four pillars of sinful life so there will be no chance of sin. Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, yeṣāṁ anta-gataṁ pāpam:* "One who is freed from all sinful reaction of life..." *Yeṣāṁ anta-gataṁ pāpaṁ janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām. Puṇya-karmaṇām,* pious activities. "Those who are acting in pious life, simply executing pious activities..."
> So in the beginning, in order to increase your attachment for Kṛṣṇa, you have to follow the regulative principles, "Don't do this." Just like a doctor gives you prescription, "Don't eat this. Don't do this," similarly, there are so many "don't"s and so many "do"s. So we have to accept the "do"s, not the "don't"s. *Ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-śīlanam*. This is called favorably cultivating Kṛṣṇa consciousness. We have to accept the "do"s, not the "don't"s.
---
**[1972: Interview](spoken/1972/720630iv.sd)**
> Now we are thinking that "I am eating very nicely by slaughtering a cow," but he does not know that he will be also be slaughtered. This is nature's law. Just like if you kill a man, then you will be killed. Similarly, in God's law if you kill an animal, the animal will kill you again. He does not know; therefore that is going on, and one is entered in the slaughterhouse, "Let me enter also." This is going on.
> I came to your country at the age of seventy years, actually at the age of seventy years old, because I was outside alone with \$7 in the pocket. [chuckles] But the impetus, the urge, was there: "Go." So similarly everyone who has understood me, the urge will be there: he must preach. It is not that I designate somebody that "You preach." No, it is so living force, great living force, that one who has understood this philosophy, he will not stay at home; he will preach...
---
**[1972: Lecture at Indians Home](spoken/1972/720630le.sd)**
> So that seriousness is also very difficult, to become very serious that "In this life I shall finish my business and go home, back to home, back to Godhead." *Bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate*. Kṛṣṇa says, "After many, many births, when actually one becomes in knowledge, he surrenders unto Me."
> So we should see the example, be confident, depend on Kṛṣṇa, and then everything is all right. Kṛṣṇa is powerful. He's omnipresent. He knows better than me. Our business is to satisfy Him. Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*.
---
**[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 9.11](spoken/1973/730630bg.cal)**
> So a devotee, if you become a devotee, you'll never fall down. Kṛṣṇa will give you protection. Kṛṣṇa says, *kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati*. He will give you protection. Otherwise you are helpless. You can fall down at any moment. But if you take shelter of Kṛṣṇa... So there are so many facilities for perfection of life. Simply by accepting Kṛṣṇa, *mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja.* If you do not do that, then you are a *mūḍha,* rascal. *Avajānanti māṁ mūḍhā mānuṣīṁ tanum āśritam, paraṁ bhāvam ajā...*. "How much powerful is Kṛṣṇa; what He can do for me," without knowing this, we do not surrender to Kṛṣṇa.
> Therefore they will..., he will go on suffering. *Tān ahaṁ dviṣataḥ krūrān kṣipāmy ajasram andha-yoniṣu*. Those who are envious of Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa says, "I put them eternally in the hellish condition of life." So if you want to save yourself from the hellish condition of life, you must take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness and surrender unto Him.
---
**[1974: Bhagavad-gītā 9.1–2](spoken/1974/740630bg.mel)**
> Kṛṣṇa says, "One who has attained perfection, and out of many such people, many hundreds and thousands, one may know Me." *Kaścin vetti māṁ tattvataḥ*. Just see how to understand Kṛṣṇa is so difficult. That Kṛṣṇa is being delivered by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Take Kṛṣṇa, immediately. Chant, dance, and take Kṛṣṇa, and eat *prasādam,* and go home. Just see how much efficient this movement is. Immediate. Therefore it is called *pratyakṣāvagamaṁ*. Yes. Those who are chanting and dancing, they are realizing. Why? Because Kṛṣṇa Himself is delivering: "All right. Take Me. It is very difficult to understand Me by..., you are so defective. But I give Myself to you. Come on." This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. Try to understand. Yes. *Pratyakṣāvagamaṁ dharmyaṁ*.
> We are teaching that you just think of Kṛṣṇa always, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa...As soon as you pronounce this sound, this vibration, immediately you remember Kṛṣṇa: "Here is Kṛṣṇa and Rādhārāṇī." So that is natural. You say "Kṛṣṇa," and if you hear, immediately you remember Kṛṣṇa's form, Kṛṣṇa's name, Kṛṣṇa's quality, Kṛṣṇa's activity, Kṛṣṇa's teaching—everything. This is called Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto*. And Kṛṣṇa says, "You become My devotee." And we are teaching that. We are opening temples of Kṛṣṇa and requesting everyone, "Please become devotee of Kṛṣṇa."*Man-manā bhava mad... Mad-yājī*. And then after opening temple, go away and manufacture some, another philosophy—we are not such nonsense. We are worshiping. Worship. Because Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī:* "Worship Me." Regularly worship, as it is prescribed in the to rise early in the morning, to have *maṅgala-ārati*, to offer this, to offer that, offer that—fully engaged. That is called *mad-yājī*.
---
**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.17](spoken/1975/750630sb.den)**
> These are the characteristics of *sādhu—*not a *sādhu* having a dress like a *sannyāsī* and accompanied by three dozen women. No. *Sādhavaḥ,* their business is to preach. Kṛṣṇa says, *api cet sudurācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ... He is *sādhu,* who are engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. *Api cet sudurācāraḥ.* Such person, even if you find some fault... Because everyone cannot become immediately perfect. Due to bad habits, sometimes they fall victim. But still, if he is Kṛṣṇa conscious strictly—he does not deviate, he does not forget Kṛṣṇa—then he is to be accepted as *sādhu.* Kṛṣṇa says. That, only for that qualification. *Bhajate mām ananya-bhāk.* That is the qualification of Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.
> So many assurances there. *Nārāyaṇa-parāyaṇa.* Kṛṣṇa says personally that "I shall protect you." People suffer on account of sinful reaction, ignorance. Out of ignorance, they commit sinful action, and sinful action reacts. Just like a child, ignorant, he touches blazing fire and it burns the hand, and he suffers. You cannot say that "Child is innocent, and the fire has burned." No. This is nature's law. Ignorance. So sinful activities are done out of ignorance. Therefore one should be in knowledge. Ignorance of law is no excuse. If you go to the court and if you plead, "Sir, I did not know that I have to suffer, I have to go to imprisonment for six months because I have stolen. This was unknown to me..." No. Known or unknown, you must go to the jail.

**[1976: Interview with Mike Darby, from Wheeling Intelligencer](spoken/1976/760630iv.whe)**
> "This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost."
> > śrī bhagavān uvāca
> > imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ
> > proktavān aham avyayam
> > vivasvān manave prāha
> > manur ikṣvākave 'bravīt

**[1977: Conversation](spoken/1977/770630r1.vrn)**
> The spirit is there. But many, many men, and may not...[indistinct] So just attempt. Ask him. Bring some books when you leave. Then construct a... No, He is giving. Kṛṣṇa is giving money. Within few days you have collected fifty thousand. Where is the scarcity of money?
