# June 26 ## Spoken on June 26 *Lectures from this day: 19 recordings* --- **[1968: Śrī Īśopaniṣad, Mantra 1](spoken/1968/680626ip.mon)** > So in every society, according to the standard of living, according..., these attractive features are going on—in birds, beasts... And when they are united... Everyone is trying to attract others. A girl is trying to attract another boy, the boy is trying to attract another girl. These attracting features is going on. And as soon as they are actually attracted and joined together, the illusion becomes doubly knotted. *Tayor mitha hṛdaya-granthim āhur*. Hṛdaya-granthim* means everything is within the heart. > The purport of this verse is that "I am situated in everyone's heart." *Sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo. Īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe 'rjuna...*. Everyone's heart, Kṛṣṇa is there, or the Paramātmā is there. And *mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca:* and all the speculation or real understanding or forgetfulness or real knowledge, they are coming, being initiated from Him. *Mattaḥ:* "from Me." *Smṛtir* means memory; *jñāna* means knowledge. *Apohanaṁ ca:* "forgetfulness." Everything is... Forgetfulness is also from Him. Knowledge is also from Him. Memory is also from Him. --- **[1971: Lecture](spoken/1971/710626le.par)** > So a human being, if he tries, he can attain that perfection. That is stated. It is very simple. In the *Bhagavad-gītā* the Lord says that *janma karma me divyaṁ yo jānāti tattvataḥ*. Anyone who knows in truth about the Supreme Personality of Godhead... People say, "God is great." That is a hackneyed word. But if we want to know how God is great, that can be also known from authorized scriptures. Just like in the *Bhagavad-gītā* God Himself describes about Himself. So we can know. > So He says that "Simply by understanding what I am..." Kṛṣṇa says or God says, *janma karma me divyam:* "My appearance, or taking birth just like a human being, is transcendental." It is not exactly like the human body, but God is so kind that He comes before us as an ordinary human being. Unfortunately, one who does not know about Him, he thinks that Kṛṣṇa, or God, is like one of us. *Avajānanti māṁ mūḍhāḥ .* That is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* "Those who are *mūḍhas,* rascals, they think Me as if one of the human being." Actually He is not. --- **[1971: Press Conference [with translator](spoken/1971/710626pc.par)** > Kṛṣṇa says that anyone can come to Kṛṣṇa consciousness and thus elevated to the highest perfection of life. So it is the duty of persons, especially that is ordered by Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu that Indians, they should purify first their life and then distribute this knowledge, Kṛṣṇa consciousness, all over the world. > That was executed by Arjuna. He changed his own principle for the satisfaction of Kṛṣṇa. He did not want to fight; therefore *Bhagavad-gītā* was explained to him, and later on, when Kṛṣṇa enquired, "What you have decided?" he said, *kariṣye vacanaṁ tava* : "Yes, I shall now fight." This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. One has to change his concocted ideas and surrender to Kṛṣṇa. That will benefit; otherwise not. --- **[1971: Speech at Olympia Theater [with translator](spoken/1971/710626sp.par)** > Similarly, it is said there that God is the light of the moon, God is the light of the sun. Every one of us has seen the sunlight and the moonshine, so how we can say that we have not seen God? Similarly, Kṛṣṇa says that "I am the sound vibration in the sky." So who has not heard the sound vibration of the cloud in the sky? So as soon as we hear the sound vibration in the sky, we can see God or we can hear God. At last, Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā* that *mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraś cāham*. If one does not see God, then, Kṛṣṇa says, "I am the death, cruel death, who takes away everything from everyone." > The suicidal policy is... Just this evening I expressed my desires to the press conference that the human society is being misled by leaders who are blind themselves. Take, for example, just like there are a few blind men, and one, another blind man, is proposing to help them crossing over the street. So this blind following is there in this sense, that we do not know what is the aim and objective of human society. The aim and objective of human life is self-realization and reestablishing our lost relation with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the missing point. So this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is trying to enlighten the human society on this important point. --- **[1972: Garden Conversation with Professor Kulshrestha](spoken/1972/720626gc.la)** > Kṛṣṇa says, *ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi*. There are many instances, great saintly persons have taken to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Lord Caitanya says, "Take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness." *Yāre dekha, tāre kaha 'kṛṣṇa'-upadeśa*. So we should have to follow the big personalities. Why should we hesitate? > Professor Kulshrestha: Yes, Swāmījī. I've been here quite frequently. And I've been actually waiting for you to come. And as Lord Kṛṣṇa wills, you see... Well, yesterday one of your disciples went to my place of his own, you see, and told me of it, you see? It is Lord who wished to see and who desired it to see. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.4.2](spoken/1972/720626sb.la)** > This is illusion. This is illusion. *Janasya moho 'yam ahaṁ mameti*, this *mamatā:* "This is 'I'; this is mine." And one day, the Mr. Death will come, he'll break everything, smash everything. We forget that. But we want to remain here with this sense of "I" and "mine." But *Bhagavad-gītā* says, Kṛṣṇa says, that "These rascals who are not God conscious, and creating *ahaṁ mameti,* very, very big scheme to become happy, the whole happiness is dismantled by Me as death." Kṛṣṇa ultimately comes as death. Just like Hiraṇyakaśipu, he was planning so many things, but Nṛsiṁhadeva appeared as death and smashed everything. Everything. > The animals like horses, elephants, cows, dogs, etc. are all household animals, and a householder has to keep them as household paraphernalia. In the modern civilization the horses and elephants have been replaced by cars and conveyances with considerable horsepower. To maintain all the household affairs, one has to increase the bank balance and be careful about the treasury house, and in order to display the opulence of material assets, one has to keep good relations with friends and relatives, as well as become very careful about maintaining the status quo. This is called material civilization of material attachment. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.10.13](spoken/1973/730626sb.may)** > Just like Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Caitanya Mahāprabhu was chanting as *ācārya.* He was crying. *Tava nāma-grahaṇe bhaviṣyati*. *Śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvaṁ govinda-viraheṇa me* [*Śikṣāṣṭaka* 7]. So what is that verse? *Prā..., cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam. Cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam. Tava nāma, kadā tava nāma-grahaṇe bhaviṣyati.* This is the ultimate, ultimate realization of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa *mahā-mantra,* that one should cry. Caitanya Mahāprabhu has said like that. So Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa's name, identical. > So it is very difficult. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu has given one line of Vaiṣṇava behavior: *asat-saṅga tyāga ei vaiṣṇava ācāra*.* Simply to give up these rascals' association. The rascal means the Māyāvādī, *karmī, jñānī, yogī,* all they are rascals. It is our open declaration. So we have to give up the company of these rascals. If we actually serious about advancing in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we should not mix with them. We should not even invite them. Neither we shall take their foodstuff, accept their foodstuff. *Dadāti pratigṛhṇāti bhuṅkte bhojayate ca... Guhyam ākhyāti pṛcchati ca. Bhuṅkte bhojayate caiva ṣaḍ-vidhaṁ prīti-lakṣaṇam* [*Upadeśāmṛta* verse 4]*. Prīti.* If you want to make one friends, then these six kinds of dealings must be there. *Dadāti.* --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.1.1–5](spoken/1974/740626sb.mel)** > Therefore when one inquires about Kṛṣṇa, he is very glorified. Therefore he says, *varīyān eṣa te praśnaḥ. Varīyān eṣa te praśnaḥ kṛto loka-hitam*. Because answer to this question will include everything, and people will profit there, *loka-hitam.* The saintly person duty is to do welfare to the people in general. That is saintly person. *Lokānāṁ hita-kāriṇau tri-bhuvane mānyau śaraṇyākarau.* About the Gosvāmīs, *ṣaḍ-gosvāmī,* it is stated that *nānā-śāstra-vicāraṇaika-nipuṇau.* The six Gosvāmīs, they were very, very learned scholars, *nānā-śāstra,* various different scriptures, *vicāraṇaika-nipuṇau,* very expert in studying all the scriptures scrutinizingly, *nipuṇau,* expert. This is the, I mean to say, calculation of the Gosvāmīs. So why they are concerned about studying so many scriptures? Now, *sad-dharma-vicāraṇa. Nānā-śāstra-vicāraṇaika-nipuṇau sad-dharma-saṁsthāpakau. Sad-dharma. Dharma* means... The exact meaning of *dharma* is "occupational duty." People are... In English they translate *dharma* as "faith." Faith can be changed. I like this faith today; tomorrow I may like another faith. So actually the translation of *dharma* is not "faith." It is "occupational duty." > So this is very glorified life. Here it is said that *varīyān eṣa te praśnaḥ kṛto loka-hitaṁ nṛpa*. So *ātmavit-sammataḥ puṁsāṁ śrotavyādiṣu yaḥ paraḥ. Paraḥ* means the supreme perfect. You are hearing the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* about Kṛṣṇa. There are many subject matter of hearing. Just like in newspaper you hear so many news. But if you hear something about Kṛṣṇa, that is the only perfect thing. That news has been published in this morning, many papers, "Kṛṣṇa..., the leader of the Kṛṣṇa movement," or "This Kṛṣṇa..., Hare Kṛṣṇa movement." There is some vibration of the word "Kṛṣṇa." That makes the atmosphere purified, surcharged. So many thousands and millions of people will read "Kṛṣṇa." Willing or unwillingly, they'll read "Kṛṣṇa." [laughter] That is their profit. *Varīyān eṣa te praśnaḥ, loka-hitam.* Immediately, they once utter the word "Kṛṣṇa," they become benefited. Never mind what is the news. Oh, we don't care for that. [laughter] But because they will utter the word "Kṛṣṇa," that is our profit. That is our profit for Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750626mw.la)** > [*japa*] *... Kṛṣṇa-nāma kara bhāi āra saba miche, pālāibāra patha nāi yama āche piche*: "Everyone should take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Remember, behind you there is the Yamarāja, death." >cribing the whole universal situation, Śukadeva Gosvāmī concluded, "As God has made it." He never mentioned any other demigod. "As God has made it." *Yathā bhagavān kriyetām.* [break]...not to accept the authority of Kṛṣṇa, misfortune. *Narādhama.* --- **[1975: Room Conversation](spoken/1975/750626r1.la)** > So everyone is servant. What is the question of four billion? Kṛṣṇa's servant... --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.13-14](spoken/1975/750626sb.la)** > This is spoken by Kṛṣṇa in the *Bhagavad-gītā* in the Second Chapter, that "My dear Arjuna, it is not that we did not exist in the past. We existed in this way, and we are existing now in the same way, and we shall exist..." That means our personality is never lost. And therefore we see so many varieties of men; each one is a person. You cannot find anyone exactly similar to the other, because everyone has got his personal propensities. And according to the personal propensities and desires, Kṛṣṇa is giving us different opportunities, and that is different body. *Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa*. > He is the oldest person because He has created everything, but He will never look old. You will never see Kṛṣṇa's picture as old man. These are the definition of God. God, nobody can be richer than Him, nobody can be stronger than Him, nobody can be more beautiful than Him, and nobody wiser than Him even. That proof we can see: *Bhagavad-gītā* was spoken five thousand years ago, and still *Bhagavad-gītā* is worshiped as the best book of knowledge. This is the proof. So God does not depend on anyone's proof. But if you want to prove whether He is God, you can get. That you can get. Therefore we should accept Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme God. It is stated in all *śāstras,* and Arjuna also, who listened *Bhagavad-gītā* from Kṛṣṇa, he also accepted. After hearing *Bhagavad-gītā,* he said, *paraṁ brahma paraṁ dhāma pavitraṁ paramaṁ bhavān, puruṣaṁ śāśvatam ādyam*. --- **[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/760626r1.nv)** > Hare Kṛṣṇa. Simply expand this idea. *Kṛṣī-go-rakṣya-vāṇījyam* [[bg/18/44|[Bg. 18.44] ]]. That is stated in the *sāstra*. *nicavat*.] --- **[1977: Conversation with Surendra Kumar and O.B.L. Kapoor](spoken/1977/770626r1.vrn)** > "At the University of Belgrade. This is the capital city and the largest university in Yugoslavia. With full confidence in the power of the holy name, we attacked this university first. We bombed at their arteries. In these universities the bookshops are the entities supplying foreign books to everyone. They are the life-force supporting the university. Of the four international bookshops, they all took both standing orders of all the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatams* and *Caitanya-caritāmṛtas* immediately, and one other shop also wanted books but wanted to wait to see which and how many copies their customers would demand. At one bookshop the manager was so pleased he requested a standing order of all of your books for his personal library also. At another bookshop they found our books so beautiful that three of the top employees, including the director, got into a group, staring at the books for over one half hour, passing them back and forth in complete amazement. One lady never looked up for the whole time, but kept reading and examining the *Bhāgavatam*. The Institute of Sociology and Philosophy called in a specialist to deliberate on your books, and unanimously they agreed to buy the standing orders for the Institute. Some of them later asked for individual books for themselves. One professor of Ethnology, acting like a magnet, attracted all necessary persons, getting them together so that they could buy the standing orders for the Ethnology Library. The eagerness of the professors here to have your books is epitomised by one professor of English, who I offered the books to. When she discovered that she could buy the *Bhagavad-gītā* from our company, she held tenaciously to my sample copy, dashed in her room to borrow money from a friend, practically throwing the money at me and then closing the door quickly, keeping my sample copy. [laughter] I was very happily bewildered, knowing that she would get an immediate opportunity to associate with the Absolute Truth. Therefore I packed my bag and headed for my next battlefield. > "At the Universtity of Skopje, in complete bewilderment, not being able to find anyone who could speak English or any information center, I simply wandered around the university waiting for Lord Caitanya to make some facility available for me. I drifted in one room seeking information, to find that I was in the Philosophy Library. So I spontaneously tried to sell them your books. As happens many times, it is impossible to find someone who speaks English, so you pass through many persons to find one who just superficially understands you. Or sometimes you must speak with several at once, and collectively you can communicate. Here I spoke with four persons who understood each other. We understood each other very little. Sometimes I spoke in English, and sometimes I spoke in French. However, the most important thing we all understood was that they wanted the books, so I sold them both standing orders of all of your books. I stumbled next into the department for English. They gave me a seat, and the professors refused to let me get up for several hours, until they all bought the books they desired. The first teacher told me that these kind of literatures had great universal truths. Such comments, coming from a Communist person, needless to say was quite pleasing to hear. She demanded both standing orders for herself. She told me before I left the department that she had been contemplating reading some Eastern philosophy; now her desires were fulfilled. She called one of her colleagues, who rushed down to meet me, who also bought all of the books. He is a philosopher and teaches Eastern philosophy. He ordered our books to employ in his classroom as textbooks. Just as I was about to get up, another group of professors dashed over to me. This time the chief and most respected professor of the entire Institution pushed his way over to see what was going on. When he saw what I had..., when he saw all of your books, he overpowered the conversation with wanting everything for himself. He had to rush off for an examination, but not before buying the *Caitanya-caritāmṛta* standing order and some small books also, for his own study. Also, he had previously been reading a *Gītā* and was delighted to buy our *Bhagavad-gītā As It Is.* Observing the whole time, the English librarian joined me after everyone had left. He wanted both standing orders for the English library, and then he agreed to buy both standing orders for himself also. By this time I was drowning in order forms for standing orders. I swept all of my orders together, put them in my briefcase, and later had to literally run out of the university because of envious officials who were pursuing me to arrest me. [laughter] This running simply allowed me to reach my next university that much quicker. --- ## Letters on June 26 *Letters from this day: 9* --- **[1967: Letter to Mukunda](letters/1967/670626_mukunda)** > Although I am passing through critical stages of my health, still good reports from San Francisco, Montreal, and New York are giving me life. --- **[1967: Letter to Tirtha Maharaj](letters/1967/670626_tirtha_maharaj)** > I understand that ayurvedic treatment cannot be made possible without being present in India.
