> So we have to learn the science. As you are learning so many department of knowledge, similarly, this is also another department of knowledge, to learn the science of God. The government should come forward to popularize this movement and to educate people in the science of God. So in the *Bhāgavata* it is said, *jñānaṁ me paramaṁ guhyaṁ yad vijñāna-samanvitam* : "The science of God is, or the knowledge of God, is most scientific." *Jñānaṁ me para...* "And it is very confidential." *Jñānam* means knowledge, and *me,* the Supreme Personality says, "Knowledge about Me is very confidential." And *yad vijñāna-samanvitam:* "And it is most scientific." Science of God is not sentiment. It is science. It is... Actually it is science, the science of sciences. Every science takes his, what is called, data, from this science.
> He canvassed, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja* : "You give up everything. Just surrender unto Me, Kṛṣṇa, personally." But nobody surrendered; only a few persons of the Pāṇḍavas, Arjuna, Bhīma, or the *gopīs* in Vṛndāvana. But at that time there were others. And later age, people misunderstood Him. But the idea is that Kṛṣṇa also came to distribute love of Kṛṣṇa, but He actually could not induce people to this cult. They misunderstood Him.

> That was written by... Actually, it was spoken by Lord Caitanya to Rūpa Gosvāmī. For ten days continually He instructed Rūpa Gosvāmī at Prayāga, Daśāśvamedha-ghāṭa. You have seen the picture in *TLC* [Teachings of Caitanya]. Caitanya Mahāprabhu was Allahabad, Prayāga, and Rūpa Gosvāmī met Him there. He was offering obeisances flat. You have seen that picture.
> Value of time is so great that one moment of your life lost, it cannot be returned even in exchange of millions of dollars. Therefore every moment should be properly utilized. *Avyartha kālatvam. When one is advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, his business becomes to see, "Whether I am wasting my time?" That is one of the sign, advanced devotee. *Avyartha kālatvam.*

**[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.3.25](spoken/1972/720623sb.la)**
> Satāṁ prasaṅgān mama vīrya-saṁvido bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ*. Vīrya. Vīrya* means potency. Just like if a potent husband and potent wife have sex intercourse, immediately there will be pregnancy. Therefore this word is used, "potent." Formerly, this was being used. Both the husband and the wife remained potent, not impotent and sterilized. They remained potent, voluntarily. But when they wanted to beget a child, that one sex intercourse is sufficient; there is child.
> So, *tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā*. Therefore the disciple's duty is to be ready always to serve the spiritual master, at any cost. That is the disciple's duty. *Sevayā. Upadekṣyanti tad jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ.* So real knowledge can be achieved in this process, *praṇipāta*. Not that I can challenge, "Oh, I can know. I have got so much education and degrees. I can understand what is God," or "There is no need of God. I am God. We are the controller."

**[1974: Bhagavad-gītā 2.14](spoken/1974/740623bg.ger)**
> Janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi-duḥkha-doṣānudarśanam*. To take birth either as a dog or as a king, the distress is the same. There is no difference. Because the dog has to keep itself within the womb of the mother in an airtight condition for so many months, and the man, either he is king or anything, he has also undergo that tribulation. There is no excuse. Because you are taking birth in a king's family, it does not mean that to remain compact within the mother's womb the distress is less, and because he is taking birth in a dog's mother's womb, therefore his is great. No. That is the same. Similarly, at the time of death, the distress... At the time of death there is great distress. It is so strong that one has to leave this body. Just like when the distress becomes very strong, one commits suicide. He cannot tolerate: "Finish this body."
> But that is not possible. That is not possible. You cannot... Because you are spirit soul... That will be explained. You are eternal. You cannot be zero. That will be explained, *na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre*, that we are giving up this body, but immediately I have to accept another body. Immediately. Then where is your question of dismantling? By nature's way you will get another body. Because you want to enjoy, you have come here in this material world. There is no question of asking. Everyone knows that "I am in this material world. I must enjoy to the fullest extent." One who is unaware of the fact that "I am going to take another life," he is thinking, "This is a combination of this matter—earth, water, air, fire. So when it will be broken, then everything will be finished. So, so long I have got this opportunity, let me enjoy to the fullest extent." This is called material mentality, atheist, atheist, who does not know that we are eternal soul, we are changing body only. The atheists think that after finishing...

> Bahya* means external, and *abhyāntara* means internal, not duplicity. That *bahya,* externally something and internally something, that will not be successful. *Bahyābhyāntaraṁ śuciḥ. Śuci* means purified, *brāhmaṇa.* And who is not purified, he is *muci.* [break] We have to present an ideal institution, not that we make compromise with everybody. That is not our business. We don't want stars; we want moon. What is the use of millions of stars? Get one moon. That is sufficient. [break]...not expect everyone to become *brāhmaṇa.* That is not possible. Because the three qualities are working, you cannot make all the population on the modes of goodness. That is not possible. There must be people in passion and ignorance. Otherwise, why Kṛṣṇa says, *cātur-varṇyaṁ,* four division? He could have done one kind of men. But all of them can be utilized in Kṛṣṇa consciousness if they are guided properly. *Sva-karmaṇā tam abhyarcya saṁsiddhiṁ labhate naraḥ*. One can get perfection, even becoming a *śūdra,* provided he is properly guided, not that only the *brāhmaṇas* can become Kṛṣṇa conscious. No. The *śūdras* also can become, provided he is guided by the *brāhmaṇa.* [break] At the present moment the whole human society is full of *śūdras.* There is no *brāhmaṇas.* So you have to train real *brāhmaṇas.* [break]...how respectfully received that Sudāmā Vipra, not that because he was a caste *brāhmaṇa.*
> Another song is, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura's, *janmaobi jadi icchā to hara, kīṭa-janma hau jaha das bhakta tuṅhara:* "I do not know what is my next life. That depends on Your consideration. But if You think that I must take another birth or another many births, it doesn't matter. Only I request You that You make me an insignificant ant in the house of a devotee." *Kīṭa-janma hau jaha das tuṅhara.* This is Vaiṣṇava aspiration, that "If I become an ant under the protection of a Vaiṣṇava, that is also successful. And I don't want to become a Brahmā who is not a devotee." So this Vaiṣṇava philosophy is very accurate. Therefore this life of a Vaiṣṇava begins with surrender, not the challenge. *Sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*. That is Vaiṣṇava. Christ also said that "Kingdom of God is for the humble and meek." Is it not? He never said it is for the lion and elephant. The material disease means we have challenged Kṛṣṇa, God, "Oh, what is God? We can live independently." And that is material scientist. They are trying to prove, "There is no God. We can create everything in the laboratory." And that is their foolishness.

> So therefore we have to bring him again to the *sattva-guṇa,* brahminical qualification, so that he can understand *ahaṁ brahmāsmi,* "I am spirit soul. I am not this matter." Then his spiritual activity begins. Therefore we are trying to bring him to the platform of *sattva-guṇa,* means to give up the business of *rajo-guṇa, tamo-guṇa:* no meat-eating, no illicit sex, no intoxication, no gambling—so many no's—to deny him the influence of material qualities. Then, if he is situated in the *sattva-guṇa,* then he remains on the platform of... When he remains on the plat..., *sattva-guṇa,* then the *rajas-tamaḥ,* the other base qualities, cannot disturb him. The base quality, the platform of base quality, is this: illicit sex, meat-eating, intoxication, gambling. So *tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaṣ ca ye*.
> When one is free from at least two these base qualities... Base quality means *kāma,* lusty desires, and greediness. In material world, generally they are under these base quality, means always filled up with lusty desires and not satisfied, greedy. So when we conquer over these base qualities, then we become happy. *Tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaṣ ca ye, ceta etair anāviddhaṁ.* When the consciousness is not influenced by these base qualities, *ceta etair anā..., sthitaḥ sattve prasīdati,* being situated on the platform of *sattva-guṇa,* he feels happy. That is the beginning of spiritual life. When... So long the mind is disturbed by lusty desires and greediness, there is no question of spiritual life. Therefore the first business is how to control the mind so that it may not be influenced by the base quality, lusty desires and greediness. We have seen in Paris old man, seventy-five years old, he is going to the night club, because the lusty desire is there. He pays fifty dollars for entering the club, and then he pays further for other things. So even he is seventy-five years old, the lusty desire is there.

> This is called *punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām.* Nobody will advise. His son will become hippie—he will tolerate: "This is modern fashion." And if he joins Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, he is unhappy, because he wants that "My son also be doing the same thing." That is called *punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām.* The world is going like that. They are chewing the chewed. We are teaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement that "What you will gain by this material way of life? Just try to understand Kṛṣṇa, and then you will get the greatest benefit." *Tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti*. The all troubles which we are suffering, that is due to our accepting this material body. That they do not know. They do not know except this material body anything. *Yasyātma-buddhiḥ kunape tri-dhātuke, sa eva go-kharaḥ .
> Therefore *śāstra* gives us the instruction, *kṛte yad dhyāyato viṣṇum*. Kṛte* mean in the Satya-yuga, when man used to live for one hundred thousands of years. Just like Vālmīki Muni, he underwent meditation for sixty thousands of years, and he attained success. So it was possible, *kṛte,* in the Satya-yuga. Satya-yuga was the first, beginning of millennium. Satya-yuga exists for eighteen hundred thousand...? Eighteen hundred thousand years, and then Treta-yuga, for twelve hundred thousand years, then Dvāpara-yuga, eight hundred thousands of years. Now it is Kali-yuga, it is four hundred thousands of years. And the duration of life in Satya-yuga was one hundred thousands of years, and in the Treta-yuga it was one thousands of years. No? Ten thousands of years. And in the Dvāpara-yuga one thousand years. And now it is one hundred. That is also not all. So this age is not suitable for yogic meditation. That is not possible. Therefore *śāstra* gives us instruction that "Self-realization, which was possible in the Satya-yuga by meditation, the same thing was made possible in the Treta-yuga," *kṛte yad dhyāyato viṣṇuṁ tretāyāṁ yajato makhaiḥ,* "by performing big, big sacrifices." That is Treta-yuga. And *kṛte yad dhyāyato viṣṇuṁ tretāyāṁ yajato makhaiḥ, dvāpare paricaryāyām:* "In Dvāpara-yuga by worshiping the Deity." Therefore in India you will find so many temples, because this is coming from Dvāpara-yuga.
