Today I shall speak before you about Mahārāja Parīkṣit. The hero of *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* is King Parīkṣit as the hero of *Mahābhārata*, the great history of India, *Mahābhārata*. Now, this Bhārata I have several times explained. Bhārata means this planet, and *Mahābhārata* means the complete history of the whole world.
Nowadays, at the present moment, history means a chronological record, but previously, history means only the important incidences at different times, they were recorded. Therefore, in *Mahābhārata* or any other *Purāṇa* also... *Purāṇas* are also history. We don't find any chronological incidences one after another. But the most important selected incidences, especially in connection with God realization, they are recorded.
So this *Mahābhārata* is also history, and as history is liked by common man, so *Mahābhārata* was written by Vyāsadeva for understanding of the most common men. *Strī-śūdra-dvijabandhūnaṁ trayī na śruti-gocarā* [[sb/1/4/25|[SB. 1.4.25] ]]. The Vyāsadeva has given explanation why he compiled *Mahābhārata,* the great history of this Bhārata. Now it is called India, but it was..., this planet was called Bhārata, Bhārata-varṣa. So he has given explanation that "The Vedic principle, Vedic instructions, they are not directly understandable by common men and women, *strī-śūdra-dvijabandhūnaṁ* [[sb/1/4/25|[SB. 1.4.25] ]].

**Prabhupāda: Hmm. Pradyumna:** *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* Page 161, text 23. [leads chanting of verse] [**Prabhupāda and **devotees repeat]
[break] the dust of the feet of a pure devotee; *na*—never; *jātu*—at any time; *martyaḥ*—mortal; *abhilabheta*—particularly received; *yaḥ*—a person; *tu*—but; *śrī*—with opulence; *viṣṇu-padyāḥ*—of the lotus feet of Viṣṇu; *manu-jaḥ*—a descendant of Manu (a man); *tulasyāḥ*—leaves of the *tulasī* tree; *śvasan*—while breathing; *śavaḥ*—still a dead body; *yaḥ*—who; *tu*—but; *na veda*—never experienced; *gandham*—the flavor.

*nadyaḥ*—rivers; *samudrāḥ*—oceans; *girayaḥ*—hills and mountains; *savanaspati*—vegetables; *vīrudhaḥ*—creepers; *phalanti*—active; *oṣadhayaḥ*—drugs; *sarvāḥ*—all; *kāmam*—necessities; *anvṛtu*—seasonal; *tasya*—for the king; *vai*—certainly.
**Translation:** "The rivers, oceans, hills, mountains, forests, creepers and active drugs in every season paid their tax quota to the king in profusion."
**Prabhupāda:** So everything in nature has to give something. That is the order. Everything that we see, *nadyaḥ,* the river... Why God has created the river? It has got a function. Similarly *samudrāḥ,* the oceans; similarly the hills, mountains, *girayaḥ; savanaspati,* vegetables. All these vegetables which are growing, each and every vegetable, creeper, has some service, we do not know. Because we do not know the use of these vegetable, creepers, we go to the doctor, physician. Otherwise, if somebody is ill, the medicine is there. We do not know how to utilize it.

**Prabhupāda:** ...scientists can change it? Nature. Nature. Nature should be one kind. Why there are two kinds, varieties?
**Satsvarūpa:** We get a body according to our desires, and then the body only lasts so long, and when it wears out, we have to take another body, and that is determined by our actions in this body.
**Prabhupāda:** Yes. That is the main point. The subtle body carries the soul. Just like in dream, we are carried by the subtle body and placed in different condition. But so long this body is capable of working, I come to this body. My dream is over, and I come back to this body. And death means that this body, being useless, instead of coming to this body, I go to another body. This is transmigration. Just like when you vacate one apartment, then you do not come back in that apartment, but you enter another apartment. Is it clear?

**Prabhupāda:** Sex life, married couple, that is all right; not otherwise. That is sinful. [translated into German throughout]
**Devotee:** Śrīla Prabhupāda, just his objection was that in this statement in the *Bhagavad-gītā* doesn't clearly say no reason you should not have sex life outside of married life, they simply state religious principles, but this is...

**Arrival Address — June 20, 1975, Los Angeles**
Kṛṣṇa-kānti**: [introducing recording] This is **Śrīla Prabhupāda'**s arrival address, recorded June 20th, 1975, in Los Angeles.Prabhupāda:** [**leads *Prema-dhvanī*]...Gaṅgā-mayī ki jaya.* New Dvārakā *dhāma ki jaya.* New Dvārakā *dhāma ki jaya. Samaveta bhakta-vṛnda ki jaya.* All glories to the assembled devotees. All glories to the assembled devotees. All glories to the assembled devotees. Thank you very much.
**Prabhupāda:** Our speaking is the same: *harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam* [*Cc Ādi* 7.76].
**Prabhupāda:** We have no new discovery. We don't manufacture. This is our process. We simply follow the predecessor's instruction, that's all. Our movement is very easy because we haven't got to manufacture something. We simply repeat the words and the instruction given by the predecessor. Kṛṣṇa instructed Brahmā, Brahmā instructed Nārada, Nārada instructed Vyāsadeva, Vyāsadeva instructed Madhvācārya, and in this way, then Mādhavendra Purī, Īśvara Purī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, then the six Gosvāmīs, then the Śrīnivāsa Ācārya, Kavirāja Gosvāmī, Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura, Viśvanātha Cakravartī, Jagannātha dāsa Bābājī, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, Gaurakiśora dāsa Bābājī, Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī, and then we are doing the same thing. There is no difference. That is the specific procedure of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. You are singing daily, *guru-mukha-padma-vākya, cittete kariyā aikya, āra nā kariha mane āśā*. [Śrī *Prema-bhakti-candrikā* 1.2]. Very simple thing. We are receiving the transcendental knowledge through *guru-paramparā* succession. So we have to simply take instruction from guru, and if we execute that to our heart and soul, that is success. That is practical.

**Jayatīrtha:** Yes, he seems to be. He gave a very nice lecture the other night. He seems to be very—how would you say it—repatriated. [break]
**Jayatīrtha:** Well, now we are catching up. Now things are becoming much more organized. But at the end in New York, things were very disorganized, and nothing was getting done.
**Brahmānanda:** Hayagrīva is today finished the sixth volume of *Madhya-līlā.* There are nine volumes altogether.

**Car Conversation — June 20, 1975, Honolulu**
**Prabhupāda:** That is natural. *Nūnaṁ mahatāṁ tatra. Mahat* means bigger and more powerful, and *nunam* means there are less powerful. So everyone is less powerful than God. Then why don't you serve God? That is the perfection. You have to serve somebody strong. You cannot avoid it. Just study all status of society—animal society or human society. The law is that the stronger is dominating the weaker. That is the law. You cannot avoid it. So wherefrom this idea came unless it is in God? *Janmādy asya yataḥ.* All ideas come from the Supreme. That is the law, that the strong predominate over the weak. So who can be stronger than God? So this is our natural position, to serve God.
**Prabhupāda:** Yes. Perfect master. Even without becoming master He is providing everything. Even though those who do not accept Him, He is also giving them. So what to speak of those who have accepted Him? This is very simple philosophy. It is His position to accept service. Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja* [[bg/18/66|[Bg. 18.66] ]]. It is good for the person who surrenders. Kṛṣṇa doesn't require your service. When He says, "You surrender to Me," it does not mean that Kṛṣṇa is suffering for your service. Kṛṣṇa is self-sufficient. He can create millions of servants like you. So He doesn't require your service. But if you serve, then it is your benefit. You become saved: "Now I am under the protection of a very able and, every respect, opulence of master." You are serving cats and dogs. Why not serve the most supreme, able and opulent master? This is going on. You have to serve. You cannot say, "No, no. I will not serve. I am independent." That is not possible. You have to serve. You have to serve, and you will be exploited by the imperfect master. So why not serve the perfect master so that you will not be exploited again? It is simple. [break]
**Prabhupāda:** Yes. Now this, as you say that the Hawaiian, they are meant for cleansing the hotel to get some money. And without money, he cannot live. So he is forced to serve. What are the tanks? Petrol?

**Departure — June 20, 1975, Honolulu**
**Prabhupāda:** ...these few days we passed together were very pleasing, and our only aim is how to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The Vaiṣṇava's business is *para-duḥkha-duḥkhī*. *Para* means others, and *duhkha* means unhappy. So Vaiṣṇava personally has no unhappiness, because Vaiṣṇava is under the protection of Kṛṣṇa. So there is no question of unhappiness for a Vaiṣṇava. But Vaiṣṇava is unhappy by seeing others unhappiness. *Para-duḥkha-duḥkhī*. That is the definition of Vaiṣṇava.
So Vaiṣṇava is *para-duḥkha-duḥkhī*. Practically every person, 99.9%, they are under the impression that "I am this body." This conception of life is animal consciousness. The dog is thinking, "I am this body." The cat is thinking, "I am this body." But actually we are not these bodies. That is the first instruction in the *Bhagavad-gītā*. So, especially in the modern age, people are thinking like that, and they are unhappy. They don't believe in the next life, although practically we see, every moment you are changing bodies.

**Pradyumna:*Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. *[devotees repeat] [leads chanting]

**Satsvarūpa:** Of course, evolutionary theory is that in the beginning, all the different species weren't there. Only simple forms, and then they..., more complex ones came about.
**Prabhupāda:** [*japa*] [break] ...has joined us, About fifty friends, Indian, they have left him. [break]
**Prabhupāda:** ...of the garden, they are not clean. They should be clean. Just like in front of our, this temple, the footpath is very clean.

**Pradyumna:*Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* [Devotees repeat] *[leads chanting, etc.]
**Translation:** "Endeavors merely for sense gratification or material happiness through economic development are not to be performed, for they result only in a loss of time and energy, with no actual profit. If one's endeavors are directed toward Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one can surely attain the spiritual platform of self-realization. There is no such benefit from engaging oneself in economic development."

**Talk with Svarūpa Dāmodara — June 20, 1977, Vṛndāvana**
**Svarūpa Dāmodara:** Some scent. We have another one. It has 108 petals exactly. It's white when full bloomed. Just started, this monsoon. The full season will come sometime in August, August and September. Lotus are everywhere, these flowers, on either side of the road, and all lakes full of lotuses.
**Svarūpa Dāmodara:** Pineapple is very sweet. This is another season, but in about three weeks the larger variety will come. This is a little smaller type. The bigger ones, big. And it is green outside, but it's very sweet, full of juice. The hillsides all covered with pineapples, and it's very cheap.
**Svarūpa Dāmodara:** Oh, yes. The farming is very good this time in our side, Bengal and in Assam and in Manipur. So much rain from the south. And I saw from the plane that everything is already green.

**Talk with Svarūpa Dāmodara — June 20, 1977, Vṛndāvana**
**Prabhupāda:** Now Kṛṣṇa is [indistinct]. [break] Do you think that the..., if the scientists attend meeting, they are interested? Or they feel it dry?
**Svarūpa Dāmodara:** I think they are very interested, very much. Otherwise they won't take time to discuss. In fact, some of them feel that it's very unique.
**Prabhupāda:** Unique it is. There was no such proposal before. They have taken God as something mystic, imagination. Especially this rascal Darwin's theory, "People are animals," and they accept that "We are animals. My father was monkey." Very easy. This rascal has convinced them that "Your father, grandfather, were monkeys, and you are Sir Walter Ross." "How I became a Sir Walter Rose, the son of a monkey?" This is their business. How much bluff. Disgusted learning and jump. A monkey has become man. Body's changed.
