## Spoken on June 19
*Lectures from this day: 12 recordings*

**[1968: Bhagavad-gītā 4.9](spoken/1968/680619bg.mon)**
> One has to learn the subject matter. And how it can be learned? Simply by service attitude. *Sevonmukhe.* We cannot learn this transcendental subject matter by challenge. If we are submissive, if we are engaged in His service, then, by His divine grace, He reveals Himself. Everything understanding of Lord, that is revelation. By our experimental knowledge, we cannot understand what is God. *Ataḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmādi na bhaved grāhyam indriyaiḥ*. Our senses are now materially contaminated; therefore we cannot understand what is God, what is His appearance, what is His disappearance. This is not possible. The whole thing is to accept the purificatory process of the senses. *Sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṁ tat-paratvena nirmalam*. One has to become purified by freeing himself from all designation. This is the first step.
> Therefore *Bhagavad-gītā,* it is explaining very nicely, *brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā*. First thing is when you are actually Brahman realized, or you have realized your identification that you are not matter, you are spirit, the first symptom is *prasannātmā:* you become immediately joyful, without any anxiety. *Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śocati na kāṅkṣati.* There is no lamentation, there is no hankering. *Samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu,* and seeing every living entities on equal level, because he has spiritual vision.

**[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.3.22](spoken/1972/720619sb.la)**
> So we are not concerned with the imagination form. They are also not imagination. Actually, everyone, all the demigods, they have got their forms. But the difference is Viṣṇu, the form of Viṣṇu, is eternal; and the forms of demigods or the form, our forms—just like we have got now some form—they're not eternal. Temporary. We all sitting here, we have got different forms, but as soon as these forms will be changed—we shall accept another form—this form's gone forever. It will never come again. But Viṣṇu form, Lord Viṣṇu's form, *viṣṇu-tattva...Viṣṇu-tattva* means the forms of the original Lord, Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is the original form. *Kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam*. But He expands in different forms.
> Therefore their philosophy, that "Any form you like, you can concentrate. Because after all, there is no form. But for your present facility, you can imagine some form." But there is also mistake on their part, because they say, "Imagine any form." Generally, they prescribe the form of Lord Śiva, the form of Lord Viṣṇu, the form of Durgā, the form of the sun and the form of Gaṇeśa. *Pañcopāsanā.,* these five forms. But ultimately, you become "form-less." The example given by them is that you rise up to a upper place with a wooden stair, and as soon as you reach there, you throw it away, so that you'll not be able to come back again.

**[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.10.4](spoken/1973/730619sb.may)**
> So *dharma* is so strong. *Dharma* means to abide by the order of Kṛṣṇa. That is *dharma.* If we remain faithful to Kṛṣṇa and what Kṛṣṇa says, if we do that, that is perfect *dharma. Sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje*. That is first-class religious system. We do not decry any system of religion. We do not say that Hindu religion is better than Christian religion. In what way Hindu religion is better than Christian religion? The followers of so-called Christian religion, they're also set of nonsense, and so are the Hindus. Why we should give preference to one class of rascals and fools than the other class of rascals and fools? We have no such idea, "The Hindus are greater than the Muslim or the Christian," or "The Muslims or Christian..." We do not con... We want to see, test how much he's devotee of God, how much he has developed his God consciousness. Then we accept that he is..., here is *dharma.* That is the test. *Sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje*.
> So these so-called scientist, philoso..., all of them are rascals. We should take instruction from *śāstra.* Kṛṣṇa says, *parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ. Yajñād bhavati parjanyaḥ*. If you perform *yajña... Yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ*. We have to perform *yajña. Yajña* means to satisfy Viṣṇu. That is *yajña.* Viṣṇu..., the Supreme Lord's another name is Yajña-pati. So *yajñārthe karmaṇaḥ anyatra loko 'yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ*. Therefore everything should be done for *yajñārthe,* for satisfying Viṣṇu. But *na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum*.

**[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740619mw.ger)**
> The Kṛṣṇa's energies are so powerful and subtle that it takes..., everything takes automatically. One set up, then after that, after that, after that, after that—everything is there. *Parāsya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate. Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi*. Everything is described in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* You have no control. You are simply under the grip of material nature. Everything, whatever you are doing, immediately it is being recorded automatically. Just like automatic printing press: you simply push the paper, and magazine comes. If you can manufacture some machine, you rascal, then how subtle machine can work on under the supervision of the Supreme?
> Otherwise, nobody cares. Say about 1945, so in front of my house there was an old man. So as neighbor, we had very good talks always. So as soon as I say "Bhagavān," he will be angry. "God." So one day he said, "Why you always say 'Bhagavān, God'?" Just see, an old man, and still he is such a rascal. He did not like. That is called demonism. Even the father of Prahlāda Mahārāja, that five-years-old boy, he was doing nothing harm, simply chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa—he became angry: "No, no." So big enemy that he wanted to kill him. This is demoniac. [*japa*] Some bad smell?

**[1974: Room Conversation with Professor Durckheim, Dr. P. J. Saher and Professor Porsch](spoken/1974/740619r1.ger)**
> And after death, you are taking their skin. So every way they are serving. The stool, cow dung, we have stacked here. I have seen. They are also fertilizer. In so many ways they are giving you service, and you are killing the poor animal. What is the human civilization? Therefore Lord Buddha wanted to stop animal killing first. When there was too much animal killing, the incarnation of Lord Buddha was there to stop animal killing. Buddhism, there is no animal killing, although they are now killing animals. But originally Buddha religion means nonviolence. Also Lord Christ also said, "Thou shall not kill." And Kṛṣṇa says *ahiṁsā.* So in no religion unnecessary killing of animal is allowed. Even in Muhammadans, they are also... *Qurbani. Qurbani* means they can kill animals once in a year in the mosque. So everywhere animal killing is restricted.
> "When one is self-realized, then he is jolly," *prasannātmā.* He is never morose. He is jolly. *Na śocati na kāṅkṣati:* "He has no lamentation, no hankering." *Samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu:* "He is equal to everyone—man, animal and everything." And *mad-bhaktiṁ labhate parām* : "Then devotional life begins." So without self-realization, there is no question of devotional life. Or those who are engaged in devotional service, they are all... Just like these boys, my students, they are trained up how to be always in devotional service. So one who is engaged in devotional service, he is supposed to be already self-realized, because he has understood "What I am." Yes. And then he sticks to devotional service. Otherwise, he cannot. If one thinks, "I am this body," then he cannot be engaged in devotional service, or he cannot stick. He knows that "I am part and parcel of God, so my duty is to serve God." This is self-realization. And then he engages himself in devotional service.

**[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750619mw.hon)**
> So we should take full advantage of the human life. That is civilization. And in sense gratification it is not civilization; it is animal life. [break]...for sense gratification. This is the modern civilization. [break]...nice place is made for sense gratification. And as soon as you perform *kīrtana,* the police will harass you. This is civilization. [break]...nice place, there should be so many temples. People will come early in the morning, take bath in the sea, go to the temple, have some spiritual inspiration. That program is nice. And running. The dog is running and the man is running.
> *...khalu sarvataḥ syāt*. Viṣaya* means sense enjoyment. Now, that boy and the girl, they're taking dogs. The dog is also male and female, and the man is male and female. So *viṣaya* means sense enjoyment. The sex enjoyment is both; the dogs and the man, they will have. But the man can get Kṛṣṇa; the dog cannot get Kṛṣṇa. That is the difference. *Viṣaya,* that sex enjoyment, is available both for the dogs and the man. But the man can achieve Kṛṣṇa; the dog cannot. That is special. *Viṣaya khalu sarvataḥ syāt.* [break]...of eating, sleeping, mating. That is available in every life. [break]...another passage is there in *Prema-vivarta, janame janame sabe pitā mātā pāya:* "In every life, one can get father and mother." *Kṛṣṇa guru nahi mile bhajaha hiyāya*: "But Kṛṣṇa and *guru* cannot be had in every life." That is only in human life. Otherwise, as soon as there is birth, there is father and mother. Either you become human being or tiger or snake or bird, the father-mother is there. But the spiritual father and Kṛṣṇa, that can be obtained in human life, not in every life.

**[1976: Śubhavilāsa Home Engagement](spoken/1976/760619le.tor)**
> So we should be always so grateful to Śrīla Prabhupāda, not only for coming and visiting us in our temples, whereby we can actually see in this instance how by his visit this came about, that a year later now such a big, big temple is there... That anyone can plainly see. It is phenomenal. It can be seen. But also we should be grateful that by his instructions... Because the physical presence is not always appreciable. Sometimes he is here and some, then he is not here. But always Śrīla Prabhupāda is with us by our following his instructions. We simply have to be obedient to these instructions. As Śrīla Prabhupāda was saying last night in the initiation lecture, that human life is meant to follow these instructions of *tapo-divyam, going to the difficulty of giving up sinful habits, meat-eating, illicit sex, intoxication, gambling, and engaging in chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. So we do these things very sincerely, then we shall always have Śrīla Prabhupāda guiding us. Kṛṣṇa is in the heart, and when Kṛṣṇa in the heart sees that we are trying to follow the instructions of the pure devotee, who's also a manifestation of Kṛṣṇa... Kṛṣṇa within is the Supersoul. Kṛṣṇa manifested before us is the spiritual master. So the Lord within the heart will see that we are trying to follow the instructions of the spiritual master and will enlighten us how to always stay strong in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, how to always feel the direct association and direction of the spiritual master by obedience to his instructions. So all these things we'll realize more and more if we simply faithfully stick to Prabhupāda's instruction, and his main instruction is that we simply all be happy and engage in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
> So we can see that it is the desire of the pure devotee. Whatever Kṛṣṇa wants, He does not have to work at all. His desires are immediately fulfilled simply by His desiring. Everything is fulfilled. By Kṛṣṇa's finger signal the whole material creation is created, brought about, and it's maintained by His separate energies. And everything is annihilated by Kṛṣṇa's will and created again. And Kṛṣṇa, He is fulfilling all His infinite desires in the spiritual world also. So as Kṛṣṇa's desires are immediately fulfilled, the pure devotee's desires are also fulfilled. That's because he is one with the Lord. His interests are the same are Kṛṣṇa's. This is the oneness, that the pure devotee has no desire but to see that Kṛṣṇa is satisfied. And so by Śrīla Prabhupāda's desiring this to come about, praying to Kṛṣṇa, therefore the devotees also praying and endeavoring have brought about that now Toronto is situated in such a nice temple, and just since opening that temple now so many new devotees have come and joined. So it's now very firmly situated in this big North American city to go on spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

**[1976: Morning Walk](spoken/1976/760619mw.tor)**
> Svarūpa Dāmodara challenged one scientist in California that "If I give you the chemicals, can you manufacture life?" He said, "That I cannot say." What you have spoken all this nonsense? *Māthā kare heṅṭa*. And when there is challenge, *māthā kare heṅṭa*. Otherwise, *baḍa baḍa bāndarera, baḍa baḍa peṭa*, big, big monkey, big, big belly. And when the real question is there, *māthā kare heṅṭa*. Ceylon jumping, melancholy. Hanumān jumped over the ocean, so other monkeys, they also become very proud: "I am..., Hanumān is our leader. We can...," "Can you jump over Ceylon?" *Māthā heṅṭa.*
> That is we are trying. That is real scientific. Eh? What is method? Very simple: *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru mām evaiśyasi asaṁśayaḥ* : "Without any doubt, he comes to Me." This is science. Why shall I waste time? [break]

**[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.6.3](spoken/1976/760619sb.tor)**
> So the suffering also, and enjoyment, this is also due to the senses. *Mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ*. So in the material world, so long we have got this material body, two things will be there: suffering or enjoyment. And what is the suffering and enjoyment? With reference to the senses. Or... Senses... Just like the skin is called touch sensation. We feel pleasure by touching the skin. So this pleasure, due to the touch sense, sometimes it is painful, sometimes it is pleasing, due to different circumstances. Just like water. Water is very pleasing to the skin if it is summer, and water is very painful to the skin if it is winter. So water is the same, my skin is the same, but due to seasonal changes, the same water is sometimes pleasing and sometimes distressing. *Mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ.* So, so long we have to remain in this material world or so long we have to continue this material body, two things will continue. You cannot stop it. It is not possible. *Mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ.* And what are actually there? *Agamāpāyino 'nityās:* they come and go. They're all temporary. Winter season or the summer season, it does not stay; it comes and go away. So everything in this material world, so-called distress and happiness, they come and go. So we should not be very much disturbed by... Neither we shall waste our valuable time seeking after so-called... Nobody wants distress, but everyone wants happiness. So without knowledge, in ignorance, we are simply trying after happiness. This is material world.
> So this *sukham, indriya-jam*, sense gratification. Here it is said, *deha yogena dehinam. Dehī,* this is not understood, the *dehī* and *deha. Deha yogena dehinām. Dehī* means the person who possesses this *deha.* That is not understood. That is the beginning of spiritual education in the *Bhagavad-gītā. Dehino 'smin yathā dehe*. ou ask anybody, I think 99.9% will be unable to understand what is *dehī* and *deha.* This is our modern education. *Dehina* and *deha. Dehī,* the Sanskrit word, that is called *in-pratyaya astrārthe-in*. When you possess something, then in Sanskrit, I means to say, *pratraya.* Just like *gunin. Guṇa* means *guna,* and you add *in,* then *guṇin.* Similarly, *deha,* and you add *in,* then *dehin.* The real meaning is, *deha* means this body and *dehī* means the possessor of the body. So actually in the modern age, the so-called civilization, they do not understand what is *deha* and *dehī.* They think this *deha* is everything, the body is everything. But that is not the fact. So *dehī,* the possessor of the body.

**[1977: Room Conversation](spoken/1977/770619r1.vrn)**
> Real unhappiness is that you are "Why I am struggling? I don't want death." Actually, why I am taking massage and so on, so on? So that I may not die. So where is the scientists' guarantee, "No, you'll not die"? Has he any...? You'll struggle only. That's all. The scientists cannot guarantee, "No, you'll not die." That is real guarantee. "You'll die comfortably." Hmm? Die comfortably. Now there is no appetite. Where is the scientist, assuring, "Take"? What actual benefit they have done? They are giving some... Nothing they have given. It is simply bluff. Things without which we could do, such things are there. There were no motorcars. There was horse carriage and bullock carriage. Things were going on. Not that without this horseless motorcar society would have been vanquished. No. There are other alternatives. Rather, they were complicated. As soon as you ride on a car, there is anxiety, especially in your country, so many cars. When you ride on a car, full of anxiety. At any moment there may be accident. It is not comfortable. If you are full of anxiety... Aeroplane may be. At any moment you can die. It is your time only. They're going in good faith: "I shall go there." But before rising to the sky, finished, crash. So many aeroplane has been... So where is the comfort? As soon as you get on the aeroplane, you are in full anxiety that at any moment there may be crash. Is it not? Then where is comfort? Real comfort is without anxiety. That is real comfort. Cāṇakya Paṇḍita has given, real comfort means *arni apravāsa:* "One who is not out of home* [*apravāsa] and one who has no debts [*arni]*, he is happy." Nowadays people are going out of home, and everyone is debtor to the bank and so many... The economic machine is so made that one is put always in debts for some so-called comfort, and he's full of anxiety. The whole month you have to work to pay debts. [end]

**[1977: Morning Talk](spoken/1977/770619r2.vrn)**
> This simple... A child changes body. That is beginning. There is no... Same child. For a while it may be. Now he's grown up, young man. It is not change of body? Why these rascals cannot understand? Where is that inteligence? Therefore I have said, "You have no brain." It is a fact. My son, he's now young man. He took birth as a small child. Where is that body? Body has changed. Common thing. But these rascals, so fool, they cannot understand. I have become old man, but if some elderly person, my guardians, were alive, he knew it, "He has become old man, but he was born a small child." That we have given in pictures, change of body. Change of body is going on. Why these rascals cannot understand? What is their intelligence? Therefore the real problem is the change of body should be stopped. And that is real scientific advancement. That is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā:* stop change of the body. We are trying to follow this culture. They say, "It is impossible." So what is their knowledge of? Why the scientists cannot at least stop change of body? Young man... When I was young man, sir, stout and strong, then people came here. Now, on account of change of body, I am now invalid. Why the scientists cannot stop this? This is change of body. Simply bluff. They are big man amongst the rascals. They have not contributed anything. They say, "Change of body cannot be done"? What do they say? A young man is becoming old man. This is not change of body? Either stop this... And accept, soul is eternal; body is changing. What you can do? You cannot stop the change. Young man became old man. Or accept it is change of body.
> Just like changing the cloth, it is... No, I can change this cloth. That does not mean I have become something else. *Vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni...*. They do not try to understand this. What is their advancement? You are supporting these rascals. That means you do not understand about the soul. Is it not?
