# May 27 *Lectures from this day: 12 recordings* --- **Bg 3.17-20 — May 27, 1966, New York** **Prabhupāda:** [leads *kīrtana*] [*prema-dhvani*]. All glories to the assembled devotees. All glories to the assembled devotees. All glories to the assembled devotees. Thank you very much. Now, so far *yajña,* offering sacrifice for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord, as we are discussing for the last few days, now here, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa says that for a person who is already situated in the spiritual platform and is satisfied with his own self, he hasn't got to do anything. He has surpassed that stages of offering sacrifice, worship, prayers, everything—one who is situated in self-satisfied state. --- **Sannyāsa Initiation Lecture — May 27, 1972, Los Angeles** **Prabhupāda:** > Ahaṁ tariṣyāmi duranta-pāraṁ > tamo mukundāṅghri-niṣevayaiva > [[sb/11/23/57|[SB. 11.23.57] ]] As I explained in the beginning, the whole process is to engage in the service of Kṛṣṇa, whose another name is Mukunda. *Muk* means liberation, one who gives liberation and blissful life. So this Kṛṣṇa conscious movement is meant for delivering the conditioned soul of this age, Kali-yuga, as it was inaugurated by Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu Himself, accompanied by Nityānanda. He also took *sannyāsa* at the age of twenty-four years only, very young man. So according to Vedic system, one takes *sannyāsa* at the fag end of life, just like I have taken. While I was going to die, I took *sannyāsa*. So, that is also, something is better than nothing. And now you have taken *sannyāsa* in prime youthful life. So you are all far better than me. You have got enough opportunity to serve Kṛṣṇa and His mission. I am old man. I may pass away at any moment. The warning is already there. So you remain and preach this cult. --- **Purport to Bhajahū Re Mana — May 27, 1972, Los Angeles** **Prabhupāda:** So this song was sung by Govinda dāsa. *Govinda-dāsa-abhilāsa re*. What is his desire? *Abhilāsa* means desire. *Bhajahū re mana śrī-nanda-nandana*: "My dear mind... Because mind is our friend and enemy. If you train the mind, then mind is your best friend. And if you cannot train your mind, then will be your bitterest enemy. *Sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padāravindayoḥ* [[sb/9/4/18|[SB. 9.4.18] ]]. Therefore mind has always to be engaged on the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, then mind automatically will be controlled and will become friend. So Govinda dasa is expressing his desire: "My dear mind, you just be engaged in devotional service of Nanda-nandana. His... He does not say Kṛṣṇa. He says Nanda-nandana. *Bhajahū re mana śrī-nanda-nandana*. If we address Kṛṣṇa directly, that is not very pleasing. But if we say Kṛṣṇa: Nanda-nandana, Yaśodā-nandana, Devakī-nandana, Pārtha-sārathi—in relationship with His devotee—then He becomes more pleased. So *bhajahū re mana śrī-nanda-nandana*. Why Śrī Nanda-nandana? Now, *abhaya-caraṇāravinda re*. If you take shelter of the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, Nanda-nandana, then you'll have no more anxiety, fear. --- **Nṛsiṁha-caturdaśī, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.5.22-32 — May 27, 1972, Los Angeles** **Prabhupāda:** So today, appearance day of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva. Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva appeared on this Nṛsiṁha Cāturdaśī on account of His devotee Prahlāda. As it is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā, yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata, abhyutthānam adharmasya* [[bg/4/7|[Bg. 4.7] ]]. Paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtāṁ, sambhavāmi yuge yuge* [[bg/4/8|[Bg. 4.8] ]]. The Lord appears with two purposes. *Paritrāṇāya sādhūnām:* just to give protection and rescue the devotees, and to kill the demons, *vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām.* So Prahlāda Mahārāja, five-years-old boy, his only fault was that he was Kṛṣṇa conscious. He was devotee of Kṛṣṇa. That was his only fault. And the father was so unkind to a child, even five years old, he could not excuse, "Oh, let this boy do whatever, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa." No. The demons are so much against God consciousness that even at his home he would not allow his own child to become God conscious. This is demoniac civili... So you'll find many critics, many enemies, because you are making progress in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So the demons are always against this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. That is the whole history. Just like Lord Jesus Christ, he was crucified. What was his fault? He was preaching God consciousness, that's all. This society is so cruel. So Prahlāda Mahārāja was tortured in so many ways. The torturing methods, I think you will find...., you will see in today's picture, how Prahlāda Mahārāja was tortured. --- **Morning Walk — May 27, 1974, Rome** **Prabhupāda:** So we can discuss some of the problems, about the problems. Discuss what are the problems. **Prabhupāda:** Yes. We are going to solve all problems. Let us have some preliminary discussions how we are going to solve. **Bhagavān:** The biggest problem now is that they have built up a type of society in which their needs are all coming from petrol energy. To produce what they need today is all coming from this petrol energy... --- **SB 1.2.3 — May 27, 1974, Rome** **Nitāi:** *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya*. *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya*. *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya*. [devotees repeat] [leads chanting of verse, etc.] **Prabhupāda:** [commenting, as Nitāi is chanting whole verse without devotees chanting responsively] No. They will not be able to follow. --- **Morning Walk on Waikiki Beach — May 27, 1975, Honolulu** **Śrutakīrti:** [introducing recording] **The following is Śrīla Prabhupāda's morning walk conversation in Honolulu, Hawaii, on May 27th, 1975, on Waikiki Beach. **Prabhupāda:** [Transl. ...two chapatis and a glass of water is received from tree. Two chapatis and the water only.] [break] ...and one fourth land, and we are puzzled with the increase of population. But there is no puzzle, three-fourths water population. Wherever you go, you get immediately many thousand fishes. So just imagine how many fishes are there. These rascals say "overpopulation." Why not overpopulation there? Huh? The fishes, for want of food they are dying and floating? Why overpopulation? All their calculation are simply bogus. There is no question of overpopulation. Even... Just like people simply can live on mango and coconut. Where is the question of overpopulation? It is chastisement. When one cannot get proper food, that is not due to overpopulation, it is due to godlessness. As soon as people will become godless, nature will chastise them—no food, no rain, suffer. This is law. **Prabhupāda:** Oh. Everything is private. Nobody..., nothing belongs to God. This is their idea. [break] --- **Morning Walk — May 27, 1976, Honolulu** **Prabhupāda:** *Sarva-yoniṣu.* All kinds of forms of life, 8,400,000 different forms of life. So "The material nature is the mother and I am the seed-giving father." Why they do not accept this philosophy? And everything is going on. Just like in the family the mother is there and the father is there. Similarly, Kṛṣṇa is the father, and material nature is the mother, and we are all sons. If we accept this simple philosophy, everything will be all right. Why they do not accept this philosophy, so many rascal philosophers? This simple philosophy. And this is a fact. What is this body? This body is this earth. "Dust thou art, dust thou be-est." So the mother is this material nature. I've got this body. And the father, He is Kṛṣṇa, or God. What is wrong in accepting this philosophy? If this simple philosophy is accepted, the whole world will be happy. But they'll not accept it. These rascals will come and speculate rascal philosophy. [laughing] With this simple philosophy... The United Nations is there. Why do they not accept this simple philosophy? If God is the supreme father and in every religion they accept that, at least the Christian religion accept that supreme father, God, and the material nature is the mother, and we are all sons. Not only human beings, but every living being, even the dogs. This is philosophy, real philosophy. Is that all right? **Prabhupāda:** Hah? Father may be dead, but that does not mean the sons are also dead. Father is dead. This father is not dead. That is another rascaldom. **Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa:** People might say the philosophy is very good theoretically, but practically speaking, people... --- **SB 6.1.27 — May 27, 1976, Honolulu** **Pradyumna:Translation:** "When the time of death arrived for the foolish Ajāmila, he began thinking exclusively of his son, Nārāyaṇa."*[[sb/6/1/27|[SB. 6.1.27] ]] **Prabhupāda:** So in the previous verse also it has been described, *bhojayan pāyayan mūḍho *[[sb/6/1/26|[SB. 6.1.26] ]], and here is also, *sa evaṁ vartamāno ajñā.* *Ajñā* means one who has no sufficient knowledge. He is called *ajñā.* And *mūḍha* means ass, rascal. So in both the verses the Ajāmila is described as fool, rascal, and without sufficient knowledge. Why? Because he's attached to the child, and he does not know that death is coming now. Death is there. This is our position. We say that "God is dead." God is not dead. God is coming very soon. Wait a few years, he'll be dead. This is the position. You rascal, God is not dead. God is coming to kick you, to kill you. Yes. Kṛṣṇa says, *mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraś cāham* [[bg/10/34|[Bg. 10.34] ]]. What is death? Just like in your previous life you had been something. Death means you have forgotten everything. Suppose I was a very big king or prime minister or president. But that is all finished. Now I've got another life, another chapter of life. *Tathā dehāntara-prāptir* [[bg/2/13|[Bg. 2.13] ]]. You have to change your body. It may be lower degree or higher degree, but you have to change your body. There are 8,400,000 species of life, forms of life. You have to accept one of them. That is our real problem. If we forget the real problem and blindly or foolishly say that "God is dead..." God may be dead, but God's law is not dead. Suppose a king dies, a president dies; does it mean the government dies? Huh? The government will go on. You can say, "God is dead." God is not dead, neither you are dead. But if you foolishly say that God is dead, that does not mean His law is also dead. The law will go on. One king may be dead; the next, his son or somebody will become king, and the government law will go on. So what is the use of talking foolishly like "God is dead. God may be dead"? God is never dead. This is going on. This morning we were talking. --- **Conversation Pieces — May 27, 1977, Vṛndāvana** **Prabhupāda:** [Transl. "Are we doing this for free?". Rascals. Liars. "You don't worry". What is this? We work hard by tolerating all kinds of troubles. And these people are all thieves and wicked. These people have cheated us.] I cannot tolerate this. You will see [Transl. there will be no religion other than this. All the compositionwala printers... Like that who will give money? To make an artificial show? Like this it will take years.] You did not give me any report of seeing Śrīman Nārāyaṇa? **Gopāla Kṛṣṇa:** I went. Shriman Narayan was not in Delhi. I spoke to his secretary, and they said that Shriman Narayan's schedule was changed. He came to Delhi on the 13th to the 22nd. But he had told Tamāla Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja that he would be there from the 25th to the 30th and I should meet him on these days. So he's gone to Wardha, and he'll be back on June 16th now. **Prabhupāda:** June 16th [Transl. who knows what will happen and not happen?]. That Shriman Narayan said that "You meet me in Delhi between 25th to 30th. I'll be there." --- **Conversation Pieces — May 27, 1977, Vṛndāvana** **Prabhupāda:** We have no other business. We want to see people live—eating very nicely nutritious food, keeping good health. But unnecessarily artificial things, bothering, that we don't want. Keep your health very nice, live for as many years as possible, and be Kṛṣṇa conscious. Then next life you go back to home, back to Godhead, permanent life. *Yad gatvā na nivartante* [[bg/15/6|[Bg. 15.6] ]]. This we want to give. There is no cheating. There is no politics, no personal ambition fulfillment. This is our mission. Try to convince them. There is not a little tinge of personal sense gratification. This is our... Now can you point out, any one of them, that "Here is the point, the personal sense gratification"? We are talking amongst ourselves, so if there is any flaw, you can point out—can anyone?—that "Here is the point, personal sense gratification"? There is no such things in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. *Tāṅdera caraṇa-sebi-bhakta-sane bās.* Our only ambition is we live among devotees and execute the mission of our predecessors, Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Kṛṣṇa. This is our ambition. We have got ambition, but this is our ambition: that live with devotees and execute the mission of our predecessor. This is our aim. Without ambition nobody can live. Self-interest, ambition, is everywhere. But self-interest is to execute the Kṛṣṇa's desire. So that they do not know. *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum* [[sb/7/5/31|[SB. 7.5.31] ]]. That they do not know. So you are Americans, and they are responding. You are responding means Americans responding. So do very carefully, and if one-fourth of America becomes Vaiṣṇava, the whole world will change. They are the leading nation. Kṛṣṇa has given them all facility—good land, good intelligence, good education, good facilities, good prestige. Is it not? They are fortunate. *Janmaiśvarya-śruta-śrī* [[sb/1/8/26|[SB. 1.8.26] ]]. Everything is there. Take this opportunity. This is our ambition. I went to America with this ambition, that "If the American people will take this Kṛṣṇa consciousness..." That is coming to be fulfilled. Now the Indian residents of America, they are also taking. That you... Who said? **Rāmeśvara:** Yes. Actually even in Los Angeles, where there is a small settlement, the entire Indian population is supporting us. They have their own societies, Gujarat, Maharastran, but all of them have voted to endorse our Ratha-yātrā and to support it with all their facilities. --- **Śrīla Prabhupāda Vigil — May 27, 1977, Vṛndāvana** **Prabhupāda:** You haven't got to think over, "What shall I do now?" Never forget. So our first business is preaching. You should always remember. This is the education. These rascals, they have no father-mother—orphans. They may think as well-educated how to earn money. We have no such... We are rich man's son. Economic problem is already solved. That is already taken. *Tal labhyate yad anyataḥ sukham. *We don't care for all this so-called improvement. That is already settled up. *Tasyaiva hetoḥ prayateta kovidaḥ* [[sb/1/5/18|[SB. 1.5.18] ]]. Just see how to become a man of character like Nārada, Vyāsa. That is our goal. *Tasyaiva hetoḥ prayateta kovidaḥ.* Not for any other. And what about your material problems? That is already taken. *Tal labhyate duḥkhavad anyataḥ sukhaṁ kālena sarvatra gabhīra-raṁhasā.* This is *kṛṣṇa-bhakta.* Don't care for maintaining this body. "What Kṛṣṇa will give, I take. If He does not give, don't mind." [hums] So discussing all this twenty-four hours, and death takes place. Death, it takes place, then where is the wrong? Where is the lamentation? There is nothing. You are not permanent. You have to die. But if you die discussing all these things, that is your glorious death. Death is sure. You cannot avoid it, today or tomorrow or hundred years after. But die a glorious death. *Yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ. Satataṁ kīrtayanto māṁ yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ* [[bg/9/14|[Bg. 9.14] ]].That is wanted. It is not difficult. So I have called you for that purpose. So if death is to take place, let me die in your association and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. There is no harm. That is glorious. Now it is very important point, Nārada's qualification. **Prabhupāda:** This Nitāi, as soon as he mixed with some pseudo devotee, fell down. Rascal. He's searching after *guru.* And where is now? **Prabhupāda:** Just see. [laughs] And he's asking my blessings for a *guru.* He's a fanatic.
