**[1969: Room Conversation with Allen Ginsberg](spoken/1969/690514r1.col)**
> Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya māṁ ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*. Don't manufacture ways and means, falsely trying to lord it over. That will... You'll not be happy, because you cannot lord it over the material nature. It is impossible. If we try to violate the government laws, is it possible for me? No. If I am to live as citizen, it is not possible for me. Then I'll be implicate more and more. This is crude example. Similarly, we are part and parcel of the Supreme. Just like there is a story, *Udarendriyānām, Hitopadeśa.* You heard the name of *Hitopadeśa*?
> Then, out of that one hundred verses, in the sixty-fourth verse there was some poetic discrepancies. The word was *bhavānī-bhārtā.* Bhavānī means the wife of Bhava. Lord Śiva is called Bhava. Lord Brahmā is called Aja, and Lord Śiva is called Bhava. *Bhava* means "from whom everything is born." Lord Śiva is the father of this Bhava. So Caitanya Mahāprabhu said that "In the sixty-fourth verse you have stated, *bhavānī-bhārtā.* Bhavānī means the husband of... Bhavānī means the wife of Bhava, Lord Śiva. So it is known that she has husband. Then why you say *bhārtā,* again 'husband'?" He was learned scholar. He could understand, "Yes." *Dvir-ukti-dośa.* This is called *dvir-ukti-dośa,* repeating twice one thing. *Dvir-ukti-dośa.* That is *dośa. Dośa* means fault.

**[1969: Initiation of Śrī Caitanya and Wedding of Pradyumna and Arundhatī](spoken/1969/690514we.col)**
> So what is the idea of Vedic principle? The Lord says, *vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyaḥ*. By different scriptures, Vedic literatures—the four *Vedas,* the *Upaniṣads* the *Vedānta-sūtra*, and any other literature—*Rāmāyaṇa, Mahābhārata...* There are so many allied scriptures. The whole aim is, target is, Kṛṣṇa. *Vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyam.* So actually the *Vedas* are searching Kṛṣṇa. In the *Brahma-saṁhitā* also it is stated,
> "This *yoga* system, *Bhagavad-gītā,* was spoken by Me to Vivasvān, the sun-god." "And the sun-god said to his son Manu." *Manur ikṣvākave 'bravīt. Evaṁ paramparā-prāpta* "In this way it is coming." *Sakaleneha yogo naṣṭaḥ paran-tapa:* "But unfortunately that link has been broken; therefore I am speaking again to you the old philosophy, *yoga* system, *Bhagavad-gītā,* unto you, Arjuna." "Why You are speaking to me? I am not a Vedāntist. I am not a *sannyāsī.* I am not even *brāhmaṇa.* Why You want to teach me?" *Bhakto 'si:* "Because you are My devotee."

**[1970: Śrī Īśopaniṣad, Mantra 9–10](spoken/1970/700514ip.la)**
> So *Bhāgavata* says, therefore, *yasyātma-buddhiḥ kuṇape tri-dhātuke*. This body is made of three primary elements: mucus, bile and air. That is the Vedic version and Āyurvedic treatment. This body is a bag of mucus, bile and air. In old age the air circulation becomes disturbed; therefore old man becomes rheumatic, so many bodily ailments. So *Bhāgavata* says, "One who has accepted this combination of bile, mucus and air as self, he is an ass." Yes.
> So *Bhagavad-gītā* says, *yā niśā sarva-bhūtānāṁ tasyāṁ jāgrati saṁyamī*. We are seeing that these people are sleeping, and they are seeing we are wasting our time. This is opposite view. Why? Because their line of action is different, our line of action are different. Now, it is to be decided by an intelligent man whose actions are actually right.
---
**[1973: Morning Walk](spoken/1973/730514mw.la)**
> Just like Māyāvādī *sannyāsīs,* they're engaged in meditation or in the Himalaya, but we have come to Los Angeles. Why? This is our mission. "Oh, these things..., these people are being misused under *māyā.* Let him gain some enlightenment." This is our mission. We are teaching them how to utilize everything for Kṛṣṇa, how to understand Kṛṣṇa in everything. That is our mission. See Kṛṣṇa in everything. *Yo māṁ paśyati sarvatra.* Everything is there in *Bhagavad-gītā.* Why don't you read? *Sarvaṁ ca mayi paśyati, yo māṁ paśyati sarvatra* : "Anyone who sees Me everywhere" and *sarvaṁ ca mayi paśyati...,* "and everything in Me, he's perfect."
> Is it clear? Try to understand this. Darkness is coming from light. Where the light is not visible, that is called darkness. This is not the nature of the sun, this covering, cloudy nature. That is not the... The nature of sun is light, but by the energy of the sun another thing is temporary created which is called mist or darkness. This is temporary. This is not permanent nature. Therefore material nature is temporary and spiritual nature is permanent. So our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is to get out of this temporary nature and go to the spiritual nature, permanent nature. Nobody wants also this temporary nature. Nobody likes this cloudy atmosphere.

**[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.52](spoken/1973/730514sb.la)**
> Therefore, spiritual education begins from this body. As Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, dehino 'smin yathā dehe*. Asmin dehe,* in this body there is the spiritual spark who is the proprietor of the body. This is the beginning of spiritual education. What is the scientists cannot imagine, or they have no idea, from there we begin our education in spiritual life—beyond their jurisdiction, beyond the jurisdiction of the scientists. And how they can understand this movement? It is beyond their jurisdiction. When they will receive one hundred or one thousands of Nobel Prize, at that time they may be able to understand that where Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement begins. They do not know even where the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement begins.
> So the human life is meant for purification. *Sattva-śuddhi.* In the *Bhagavad-gītā* there is *abhayam...* What is that? Can anyone... *Abhayaṁ sattva-saṁśuddhiḥ*. Sattva-saṁśuddhi,* it is very important thing. *Sattva* means my existence. I am eternal. So I am existing, but I am suffering. I am suffering. Just like I have got now cold affection. This is not my natural state, but I have been affected by chilly cold or something like that; therefore I am suffering. So it is my duty to cure it, to take some medicine, to go to the physician. That is called *sattva-saṁśuddhi,* purify your existence.

**[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750514mw.per)**
> Every living entity wants some pleasure, but this pleasure is finished. Therefore *athāto brahma-jijñāsā*. [In this human form of life one should inquire about Brahman or God.] Now they seek... Let them seek out pleasure from Brahman. So that they do not know. Now the situation is then no moneys. Then they will tax. Those who are living, they will be disturbed by taxation. They have no other means. *Kara-pīḍitāḥ*. *Kara* means tax, and *pīḍītā* means disturbed. They will be like that.
> Otherwise in the Hindu society, separation between husband and wife is not even dreamt of. That, it cannot be. However there may be quarrelsome, but there is no question of separation. Husband and wife, they fight, everywhere. I have seen. My father and mother was fighting. I fought. [laughter] But there is no question of separation. Separation, they never think. Neither the husband can think of, nor the wife can think of. Even in the life of Gandhi there was fight between husband and wife, and the Gandhi one day drove his wife, "Get out from my home." So she was put into the street, and she began to cry, "Where shall I go?" And then Gandhi ans..., "Come on." Yes. And Cāṇakya Paṇḍita said, *bahv-ārambhe laghu-kriyā.* The husband and wife may fight. It becomes a very serious thing, but don't take of it as serious. This is Hindu philosophy. Husband and wife quarrel should not be taken as very serious. They fight, and again they live peacefully. Why this divorce? The divorce mean it kills the whole family life. The children goes away; the father goes away; the mother goes away. I have seen so many cases.

**[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.13–14](spoken/1976/760514sb.hon)**
> So Caitanya Mahāprabhu is so kind and..., that these people in this age, they will not be able to undergo severe austerity. That is not possible. *Mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ*.* In this age every man is *alpāyuṣaḥ. Alpāyuṣaḥ* means very short-living. The limit is hundred years, but who is going to live hundred years? Nobody is. If one is eighty, seventy years, it is considered... Within sixty, seventy years everyone finished. But the age limit is hundred years. So what *tapasya* he'll do? What meditation he will do? In the Satya-yuga, by meditation one could get perfection. Just like Vālmīki Muni. He meditated for sixty thousands of years. Because in those days a man used to live for 100,000's of years. Gradually it is reducing. In the Satya-yuga man and woman used to live, human being, up to 100,000's of years. Then, next *yuga,* it was ten thousands of years, reduced by ten times. And then, next *yuga,* next millennium, it is one thousands of years. And now, in the Kali-yuga, it is one hundred years. So it is very difficult to perform *tapasya.* But the recommendation is there, *tapasā brahmacaryena*.
> After many, many years I have got this opportunity. In other, lower animal life, I have enjoyed the senses in so many ways. So sense enjoyment is not very difficult. Even there... *Viṣayaḥ khalu sarvataḥ syāt*. The hogs and pigs, they have got facility for sense enjoyment. They do not care even who is who. Even she is mother or she is sister or she is daughter, they will enjoy sex. That is hog life. You have seen. There is no discrimination. And the monkeys, they are enjoying sex life. So everyone enjoys sense life. So "Why? I have got this valuable life, human form of life. Why I shall become a living entity like hogs and dogs?" This is called *tapasya.* "Why I shall become hogs and dogs and again I shall put myself in the cycle of birth and death? I have got this life after so many evolutionary process. Why not practice little *tapasya* in this life?" This is knowledge. "If by practicing little *tapasya,* restraint, I can get relief from this repetition of birth and death, why shall I not do it?" This is knowledge. And if I again become victimized... The laws of nature is there. If you want, you can enjoy. Nature will give you: "All right, you want so much sex. All right, come on, become a hog. Yes." So nature is ready. It is not very difficult. Therefore the *śāstra* says, "No, no, no. This life is not for becoming a hog and dog." *Nāyaṁ deho deha-bhājāṁ nṛ-loke kaṣṭān kāmān arhate viḍ-bhujāṁ ye*.
