Worse still are those engaged in the so-called culture of knowledge." So there are two kinds of education: material education and spiritual education, *brahma-vidyā* and *jaḍa-vidyā. Jaḍa-vidyā* means material education. *Jaḍa. Jaḍa* means "which cannot move," matter. And spiritual education... Spirit can move. Our body is combination of spirit and matter. So long the spirit is there, this body is moving. Just like coat-pant is moving so long a man wears it. It appears that the coat is moving, the pant is moving, but actually the living entity is moving, and the covering, the dress, appears to be moving. --- **[[spoken/710513le.syd|Lecture at Wayside Chapel — May 13, 1971, Sydney]]** [*kīrtana—*Prabhupāda urging the audience, "Chant! The Wayside Chapel, of course, is the home of world religion. As a matter of fact, in two weeks' time..., in three weeks' time the Sikh community will conduct their major festival here and feast in this very theater, and everybody is invited to share with the Sikh community on that particular Sunday. So that's part of our program. And therefore it's perfectly natural that this evening we should have in our presence such a renowned world leader of a religious movement, which we have watched with great interest from the Wayside Chapel, and we are very honored that the Swami should be in our presence this evening. And in a few moments' time we're going to invite him to speak just as long as he wishes to speak to the whole community which is present. And after that, as usual, in connection with our Family of Man meetings here on Wednesday night, there will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion. --- **[[spoken/730513mw.la|Morning Walk at Cheviot Hills Golf Course — May 13, 1973, Los Angeles]]** **Kṛṣṇa-kānti:** [introducing recording] Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa. The so-called scientists, they are going on a wrong theory. Kṛṣṇa says, *ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavaḥ* [[bg/10/8|[Bg. 10.8] ]]: "I am the origin of everything." So Kṛṣṇa is life. Kṛṣṇa is not dead stone. The rascals are very strong. [*japa*] In the Sixteenth Chapter of *Bhagavad-gītā* it is said, p*ravṛttiṁ ca nivṛttiṁ ca na vidur āsurāḥ janā* [**Bg *16.7*]. *Āsura*. *Āsura*, demons, demonic civilization, demonic people, they do not know what is *pravṛtti* and what is *nivṛtti*. *Pravṛtti* means material civilization, and *nivṛtti* means spiritual civilization. The modern man does not know. They are neither educated about this *pravṛtti* and *nivṛtti*. And we are speaking of *nivṛtti*, and all of them are in the *pravṛtti*. So they cannot understand. It is foreign to them. They have no idea what is spiritual life, spiritual civilization. Five thousand years ago Kṛṣṇa spoke of all these things very clearly. Later on, the things, from the beginning of Kali-yuga, the things are deteriorating, and therefore different types of religion has sprung up—the Buddhism, Christianism, Muhammadanism. They are not perfect understanding of religious principle. And gradually the number of so-called religious section are increasing. Our Mr. Nanda is presenting another religion, *mānava-dharma.* Everyone is manufacturing. And Vivekananda is supporting, "Yes, every type of religious system is as good." This is nonsense. Actually they do not know what is religion. [pause] *Harer nāma Harer nāma*... So actually there is a... **Prabhupāda:** First of all, you have to understand what is the basic principle of civilization, what we want to fulfill, what is the goal. There are different species of life, beginning from aquatics, fishes and animals in the water. Then, as the water dries up, then vegetation come. In this way, there is evolution from aquatics to vegetable life, then moving—insects, reptiles. Then, gradually, birds. From insect, the flies come out, and then flies gradually comes to bird. Then from birds to beast, four-legged. Then from beast to human being. Then human being, the aborigines, uncivilized. Then you come to civilized life, which is generally known as Āryan life. So the Āryan civilization, Vedic civilization. In this way we get this human form of life, developed consciousness. Now we should try to understand, "What I am? Am I this body or something else?" That is the subject matter of enquiry. So where is that department of knowledge? **Justin Murphy:** We, the organization that I work for, the government that I work for, is, of course, very, very different, no doubt to..., in ideas and in philosophies to all of you, and you for example. We work within, however, a situation where we are concerned that within the framework of Australia's society, which involves people, private enterprise, industry, increasing... --- **[[spoken/750513r2.per|Room Conversation — May 13, 1975, Perth]]** **Amogha:** He said that... So he said, "It is a very convincing point of view and very thought-provoking." So I think he listened very well. **Prabhupāda:** Yes. No, if this kind of man will understand—they are in position—that will be a great... He is better than so many clergies. **Amogha:** [laughs] Yes. I invited someone for Friday. I can't guarantee that he'll come. But anyhow, his name is... He's from the local government Alcohol and Drug Authority. And they are... They have hospitals to treat people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. He is a social worker who has worked in a mental hospital, and he wants to bring a psychologist and a psychiatric nurse. And I hope he comes, because he sounded intelligent like that also. These people are looking... Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* [devotees repeat] So, *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* Canto Six, Chapter One, text number twelve. [leads devotees in chanting] So Śukadeva Gosvāmī is explaining how to become perfect gentleman. That is culture. If we do not accept education, culture, then where is the difference between a man and dog? There is no difference. So the Vedic civilization means everything under rules and regulation. That is Vedic civilization. Animal cannot be brought under rules and regulations. That is not possible. Therefore that is the speciality of human society, that the more one society follows the rules and regulation, he is to be considered civilized. Just like throughout the whole history there are civilization, Āryan civilization, Āryan and non-Āryan. What is the difference? Āryan means progress. One who is progressing towards the perfection of life, they are called Āryans, and those who are degrading towards animal propensity, they are non-Āryans. This is the difference. Āryan culture. --- **[[spoken/770513ed.hri|Evening Darśana — May 13, 1977, Rishikesh]]** --- ## Letters - [[../../letters/1967/670513_mukunda.md|Letter to Mukunda, 1967]] - [[../../letters/1969/690513_bibhavati.md|Letter to Bibhavati, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1969/690513_dayananda.md|Letter to Dayananda, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1969/690513_gopala_krsna.md|Letter to Gopala Krsna, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1969/690513_ishan.md|Letter to Ishan, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1969/690513_jayasri.md|Letter to Jayasri, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1969/690513_tamala_krsna.md|Letter to Tamala Krsna, 1969]] - [[../../letters/1970/700513_balmukundji.md|Letter to Balmukundji, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/700513_brahmananda.md|Letter to Brahmananda, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/700513_damodara_maharaja.md|Letter to Damodara Maharaja, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1970/700513_pradyumna.md|Letter to Pradyumna, 1970]] - [[../../letters/1972/720513_gurudasa.md|Letter to Gurudasa, 1972]] - [[../../letters/1973/730513_bhavananda.md|Letter to Bhavananda, 1973]] - [[../../letters/1977/770513_adi_kesava_swami.md|Letter to Adi Kesava Swami, 1977]] - [[../../letters/1977/770513_dasanudasa.md|Letter to Dasanudasa, 1977]] - [[../../letters/1977/770513_rajendra_sahai.md|Letter to Rajendra Sahai, 1977]]
