## Spoken on May 10
*Lectures from this day: 8 recordings*

**[1968: Boston College Lecture](spoken/1968/680510le.bos)**
> Kṛṣṇa or the Supreme Lord, God, is the enjoyer and we, the part and parcels, are the purist. We are also pure, we are also purists. But somehow or other we have now been contact with this material energy—therefore our consciousness has become impure. And due to impure consciousness we are suffering the material pangs. Lord Caitanya, five hundred years ago, started this movement and He said that by following the principles of this movement your heart will be purified: *ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ*.
> Then that means this is purificatory process. We have now a misunderstanding, what is that misunderstanding? The misunderstanding is that I am thinking that, "I am this body." That is the basic principle of our misunderstanding: *yasyātma-buddhi-kuṇape tri-dhātuke*. The *Bhāgavata* says one who is thinking, not one, everyone of us is thinking that, "I am this body," but *Bhāgavata* says, because that is not actually, that is not my identification. This is called false identification that, "I am this body." So purification of your heart means when you understand yourself that you are not this body, you are spirit soul. That is the transcendental platform of your understanding.

**[1969: Room Conversation](spoken/1969/690510r1.col)**
> Mānasa deha geha, yo kichu..., arpilun tuā pade nanda kiśora: "Nanda-kiśora,* O the son of Nanda, I give You, unto You." *Marobi rakhobi, yo icchā tohāra:* "Now, whatever You like, You can do, either You kill me or You protect me, as You like. You are the proprietor. You have right to do everything." This is surrender. This is full Kṛṣṇa consciousness. But that is not possible immediately; therefore we have to practice. *Sadā tad-bhāva-bhāvitaḥ*. And if we die in that Kṛṣṇa consciousness, *yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran loke tyajaty ante kalevaram...* In the particular type of consciousness, when one gives up this body, then he is transferred into that position next life.
> So *tapasya* means voluntarily one has to accept some so-called suffering. That is required to make advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness—voluntarily acceptance, some so-called suffering. *Tapaḥ divyam.* That suffering is for transcendental realization. That is good. *Tapo divyaṁ yena sattvaṁ śuddhyet*. Śuddhyet* means your existence will be purified. And existence purified means you advance to realize unlimited happiness.
---
**[1970: Śrī Īśopaniṣad, Mantra 7](spoken/1970/700510ip.la)**
> This is the perfection of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. *Ekatvam anupaśyataḥ.* A Kṛṣṇa conscious person sees oneness. All living entities, they see one. Just like fire and the sparks, although there are different types of illuminating properties, the whole thing is seen as one. Similarly, these diversities in unity. Diversities means the expansion of different energies of Kṛṣṇa. That is diversity. Otherwise, the one: Kṛṣṇa, only Kṛṣṇa. *Parasya brahmaṇaḥ śaktiḥ tathaiva akhilaṁ jagat* [*Viṣṇu Purāṇa*]. The whole universe, *parasya brahmaṇaḥ śakti... Parasya,* the Supreme Brahman, Parameśvara, *īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ* [Bs. 5.1],* His energy.
> Nothing is different from Kṛṣṇa, but still, Kṛṣṇa is not everywhere. This philosophy... Therefore this very word is used here, *vijānataḥ. Vijānataḥ* means one who knows, knower of things, how things are manifested. When one understands that things are manifested in this system exactly like the fire, heat and light... Fire is the original cause of heat and light. Similarly, whatever we see within this universe, within material world and spiritual world, the spiritual world is expansion of Kṛṣṇa's internal energy, and this material world is Kṛṣṇa's expansion of external energy, and we living entities, we are expansion of marginal energy.
---
**[1972: Lecture](spoken/1972/720510le.hon)**
> Kṛṣṇa says, "I am the center of all activities." So our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is: we don't stop activities. Don't think that we are creating some lazy fellow. No. We have got our activities. Just like our activities, this propagation of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, so we are using everything. Somebody, some foolish person, says that "If you are advanced in spiritual consciousness, why you are using material?" But the foolish person do not know that in I or you there is nothing material. Actually, there is nothing material. Material means when you forget the center, then it is material.
> So the real service is..., that is *ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam*, cleansing the heart, that "I am serving throughout my whole life my country or my family, but they are not satisfied, and I am also not satisfied." Then what is the remedy? The remedy is that service spirit is your constitutional position. You have to serve. But because you have placed your service spirit in a wrong place, you are frustrated. You have to put it into the right place, and that is Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.
---
**[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.48](spoken/1973/730510sb.la)**
> Actually, you have to work for others. That is your business. And that other is Kṛṣṇa, not this material world. I have to work for others, because I am servant originally. *Jīvera svarūpa haya nitya-kṛṣṇa-dāsa*. That is the constitutional position of every living entity: a servant. He cannot be master. If you don't become servant of Kṛṣṇa, then you have to become servant of *māyā.* You cannot be master of *māyā.* That is not possible. Master of *māyā* is Kṛṣṇa. *Mama māyā. Daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā*.
> So in this way, we are actually servant of our senses and of dictation of the senses. This is our position. *Kāmādīnāṁ kati na katidhā pālitā durnideśāḥ. Durnideśa* means... *Nirdeśa* means direction, and *durnideśa* means bad direction. Just like people, they are doing so many sinful activities for maintaining this body. But at the ultimate analysis the body belongs to somebody else. So we are fool, that "I am doing so much sinful activities for others." This is sense. But one... Everyone is under this ignorance. Although he is working for others, he is thinking, "I am working for myself, for my interest." *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum*. These rascals, they do not know what is actually his self-interest. He is working for others' interest, but he is thinking that "I am working for my interest." This is *ajñāna.*
---
**[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750510mw.per)**
> But here is something relishable therefore we are chanting whole day and night we should take advantage of it. That is the difference between spiritual and material.
> The result is that simply they are becoming tired. That's all. Because they are not working intelligently. Like monkey, he is busy all day. What is the value of that busy-ness? You'll find the monkey, he is never sitting idly. He's always busy, *"erh, erh, erh"* [imitating monkey]. [laughter] So what is the result of that busy-ness? He's a monkey. And they claim to be, they are coming from monkey, these rascals. So we can say that your monkey's quality is already there. [laughter] You have not improved more than monkey, because you are working uselessly. They are theorizing that you have come from monkey, and as soon as you say that "You are monkey," they become angry. Just see. They are claiming that we are coming from monkey. And if you say, "You are monkey, no better than monkey," then they are angry. Just see.
---
**[1975: Room Conversation with Carol Cameron](spoken/1975/750510r1.per)**
> Similarly, the *kṣatriyas,* they must be fearless; they must be very boldly, face..., fighting the enemies; they must have the capacity to govern nicely so that people will not have any complaint against the government. In this way they should be trained up. And the mercantile class of man, they should produce enough food grains, not motor tires. That is *śūdra's* business, artisans. That is *śūdra.* The *vaiśyas'* business is first to see that in the country there is enough food for eating—both for the human being and the animals. The human being should not complain that there is no sufficient food grains, therefore they're eating flesh. No. Flesh is not for human being. They should live on food grains. Just like *dāl*. *Dāl* is as good as meat, from food value. And there is sufficient varieties of *dāl* they can eat. They can make so many preparations, palatable preparations. Why are the prices of food grains are increasing? Because there is shortage. If there is enough food, the price will automatically decrease, because everyone want to sell. So the price will decrease, naturally. It will be so lavishly available that you can give food grains even to the animals like cows and goats and other so many animals. Let them eat also. That is the business of the mercantile.
> So at the present moment they are improving the method of primary necessities of life—eating, sleeping, mating and defending. They are thinking, "The dog is eating on the floor; if we can eat on table, chair and nice dish, that is advancement of civilization." They are thinking like that. The dog is sleeping on the floor, and if we sleep in very nice apartment, very decorated—that is advancement of civilization. The dog is having sexual intercourse on the street without any shame, and we are also coming to that point gradually. And if we have sex intercourse in the name of love and so on, so on, that is advancement. And dog is defending with his jaws and nails and teeth, and you are defending with atomic bomb, therefore we are advanced in civilization. But they have forgotten that the human being has got this special intellect to understand God. That they are not utilising. Just like you are going to be a doctor in anthropology. Is it not?
---
**[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.9](spoken/1976/760510sb.hon)**
> If one thinks that "I am this body," then he's no better than *sa eva go-kharaḥ.* The animals, they also think like that, "I am this body." So when one understands that "I am not this body. I'm extra..." That can be understood very easily if we analyze ourselves. I have several times said, beginning from your breathing, you analyze. Take breathing. They say breathing is the life. As soon as the breathing is stopped, no more life. So does it mean that breathing is life? No. Analyze. What is this breathing? It is air. So you can get so much air and put it into a machine, just like, what is called, bellow, and pump it through the nose. It is possible to get life? No. In this way, item by item, you analyze this body. Now you are advanced in laboratory analyzing. Take this breathing, take this blood, take this skin, take this bone. So many things are there, ingredients. Analyze each one of them. Will you find life? Therefore common sense, that this is not life. Life is beyond this, beyond this material. So so-called rascals, they think that this is body, this is life, combination. There are many theories. One of the theories is the combination of this matter—these bones, this blood, this skin, the veins, the stool, the urine, so many things—that combination makes the life. And why don't you put... All these things are available. Why don't you put together and bring life? "That we shall do in future." Just see. What is this proposal? Therefore we are so fools and rascals that we do not know what is spirit, life, spirit. Still, we are passing as big scientist and philosopher, all rascals. Anyone who is thinking, "I am this body," he's a rascal. He's an animal. *Sa eva go-kharaḥ. Yasyātma-buddhiḥ kuṇape tri-dhātuke sva-dhīḥ kalatrādiṣu bhauma-ijya-dhīḥ*. This is *Bhāgavata,* practical analysis.
> Surrender means you first of all be convinced that "Here is a person who can give me actual knowledge." Therefore before selecting *guru* one has to convince himself that "The person whom I am going to accept as *guru,* whether he actually can give me the knowledge?" That is wanted. Therefore before making *guru,* the system is, for one year the prospective disciple should hear from the person and then decide. And similarly, the *guru* also see a person who is actually submissive or not. That is Vaiṣṇava injunction, *Hari-bhakti-vilāsa,* not that to make a *guru* as a fashion. No. Not *guru*. Don't keep a *guru,* order-supplying *guru.* No. Just like if somebody keeps a dog and the master orders him, "Do this," and he does, fashion. No. It is not fashion. You must approach *guru* who..., where you can surrender. Otherwise don't make *guru.* And the *guru* also should not accept such rascal as *guru.* First of all, the thing is surrender. *Tad viddhi praṇipātena*.
