# May 7 ## Spoken on May 7 *Lectures from this day: 10 recordings* --- **[1969: Lecture at Harvard University Divinity School, Cambridge](spoken/1969/690507le.bos)** > If you think that Kṛṣṇa is Indian God's name, actually it is not Indian God's name. Kṛṣṇa never claims that He's Indian or Hindu. Most of you have read *Bhagavad-gītā.* He claims everyone as His son. Not only human society—the animal society, bird society, beast society, plant society, aquatic society—all. *Sarva-yoniṣu. Sarva* means all. *Yoni, yoni* means species of life. Everyone, all living entities, Kṛṣṇa says. Kṛṣṇa must be... If He is God, He must claim that, that "The material nature is their mother and I am their father." > Now Sūta Gosvāmī says that *varṇāśrama-vibhāgaśaḥ.* There are divisions of duties and divisions of social and spiritual order. That's all right. But how one can understand that by executing his duty, he's going to the path of perfection? Everyone should be confident that whatever he is doing, he's doing for the perfection of life. That should be the aim of... In the modern education system... Not only education system; in every field of life, practically we do not know what is the ultimate goal of life. *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇuṁ durāśayā ye bahir-artha-māninaḥ*. --- **[1970: Śrī Īśopaniṣad, Mantra 5](spoken/1970/700507ip.la)** > Therefore it is said here that Supreme Lord walks and does not walk. He does not go from His abode. He is fully enjoying. But at the same time, everywhere He is. Everywhere He's walking. Just like we offer foodstuff. So do not think that Kṛṣṇa is not accepting. Kṛṣṇa is accepting, because He can spread His hand immediately if you offer something with devotion. *Tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam aśnāmi*. > Kṛṣṇa says, "Anyone offering Me..., offering Me something with faith and love, I eat." People may ask, "Oh, Kṛṣṇa is far away, in Goloka Vṛndāvana. How He eats? How He takes?" Oh, that is God. Yes, He can take. Therefore it is said, "He walks; He does not walk." Immediately comes. --- **[1971: Lecture at Town Hall](spoken/1971/710507le.kl)** > That is the disease. And therefore Kṛṣṇa taught him the *Bhagavad-gītā*, the science of *bhakti-yoga*, and he enquired from Arjuna, "Now what you have decided? Are you going to fight or not to fight?" He said, *kariṣye vacanaṁ tava,* "Yes." *Naṣṭo mohaḥ smṛtir labdhā* : "Now I am in my real position. I have got my memory back, and I shall act according to You." And he fought. > Śrīdhara Svāmī comments on this point that *mokṣābhisandhir api nirastaḥ.* People are after religion—*dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa*. Generally people go to the churches, to the temple, for religious principles, but actually it is meant for solving economic problems. Just like the Christians, they pray, "O God, give us our daily bread." Similarly, you also go to the temple, you also worship many, many demigods also, go to the temple of Goddess Kālī or Durgā or Lord Śiva: *dhanaṁ dehi rūpaṁ dehi rūpavatī-bhāryāṁ dehi, dehi dehi,* to ask from them. --- **[1972: Pañca-tattva Installation](spoken/1972/720507di.hon)** > [chants word-for-word and devotees repeat] > ...dhyeyaṁ sadā pari-bhava-ghnam abhīṣṭa dohaṁ > tīrthāspadaṁ.., tīrthāspadaṁ śiva-viriñci-nutaṁ śaraṇyam > vande mahā puruṣa te caraṇāra vindam > [SB. 11.5.33] > dhyeyaṁ sadā pari bhava-ghnam abhīṣṭa dohaṁ > bhṛtyārti-haṁ praṇata-pāla abhīṣṭa dohaṁ > [SB. 11.5.33] > [pause] > dhyeyaṁ sadā paribhava-ghnam abhīṣṭa dohaṁ > bhṛtyārti-haṁ praṇata-pāla bhavābdhi potaṁ > vande mahā puruṣa te caraṇāra vindam > [SB. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.45](spoken/1973/730507sb.la)** > Nāhaṁ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yoga-māyā-samāvṛtaḥ*. In the *Bhagavad-gītā* also it is said that "I do not expose Myself." Kṛṣṇa reserves the right of being exposed to anyone and everyone. No. That is not possible. Although the Vedic literature is meant for to find out Kṛṣṇa, *vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyaḥ...*. All knowledge... Vedic, *veda* means knowledge. So any department of knowledge you may pursue, the business is how to find out Kṛṣṇa. That is real business. Either you take chemistry or physics or politics or sociology—anything—medicine—everything, all departmental knowledge, the aim is to find out Kṛṣṇa. > So the purpose of education means to know God, to know Kṛṣṇa. That is the ultimate purpose. But they do not know. These rascals, they do not know. *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum*. They do not know the ultimate goal of life is Viṣṇu. They are trying to be learned scholar simply by material acquisition. Therefore it is called *durāśayā.* What is the purpose of education? Purpose of education: to know the supreme cause, *sarva-kāraṇa-kāraṇam* [Bs. 5.1],* and become happy. --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750507mw.per)** > [pause] The water is not very clean. [ducks quacking] [pause] We are afraid of water; they're enjoying. [pause] Here we have got gold, copper, somewhere in the mines, but in the sky there are millions of miles' land of copper, gold. --- **[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/760507r1.hon)** > Just like Kṛṣṇa's *rāsa* dance. Any materialistic person at the dead of night will be glad to dance with young girls. What is the difference? [break] But because it was Kṛṣṇa's dancing, so this association of the woman with Kṛṣṇa is taken by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu as the first-class worship. *Ramyā kācid upāsanā vraja-vadhū-vargeṇa yā kalpitā.* [Caitanya-mañjusā] Kṛṣṇa also became a little tricky with the *gopīs,* "Oh, you have come at dead of night? What your husband, father would think? And there are so many ferocious animals in the jungle. Please get out immediately." You have read that? > For Russia, export from India will be favorable. So government paper we are printing seven, eight rupees price. Make that addition, all the books. Ask them to take paper from the government, huge quantity, and all these books should be published immediately, five thousand copies. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.6](spoken/1976/760507sb.hon)** > Adhunā—*"right now"; *mahā-bhāga—*"O the most fortunate." Parīkṣit Mahārāja is addressed as *mahā-bhāga. Mahā* means great, and *bhāga,* the same *bhaga,* from the word *bhaga, bhāga.* Bhagavān and *bhāgyavān, mahā-bhāga—*these terms are applicable to the very, very great fortunate, opulent. Actually Bhagavān, this word is applicable to Kṛṣṇa. Therefore in the *Bhagavad-gītā* you will find, whenever Kṛṣṇa is speaking, Vyāsadeva has written, *śrī bhagavān uvāca.* Real Bhagavān is Kṛṣṇa. *Kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam*. > And *bhaga* means reputation, fame. So these are the symptoms of *bhaga.* So Parīkṣit Mahārāja, although nobody can be equal to Kṛṣṇa... Bhagavān means *asamordhva:* nobody is equal to Him; nobody is greater than Him. [*Cc Ādi* 4.242] That is Bhagavān. I am fortunate, you are fortunate, but we have got many equals and many greater than. But when you reach somebody where you find nobody is equal to Him and nobody is greater than Him, that is real Bhagavān. This is a logical conclusion, who is Bhagavān. Nowadays so many rascals, they write "Bhagavān." That is blasphemy. If Bhagavān likes, such persons should be punished. But Bhagavān excuses. That is another thing. So Bhagavān is Kṛṣṇa. *Kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam*. Nobody should try to become equal to Him. That is not possible. --- ## Letters on May 7 *Letters from this day: 8* --- **[1957: Letter to Sri Padampat Singhania](letters/1947-1965/570507_sri_padampat_singhania)** > In continuation of my yesterday's letter, which I hope you have duly received by this time, and with reference to your request of submitting the way of powerful Mantra for broadcasting all over the... --- **[1975: Letter to Bhakta Dasa](letters/1975/750507_bhakta_dasa)** > I am very glad to hear all of the good news in your letter.
