# April 29 ## Spoken on April 29 *Lectures from this day: 9 recordings* --- **[1969: Brandeis University Lecture](spoken/1969/690429le.bos)** > "Whenever there is discrepancies in the religious principle, then," the Lord says that "I appear to establish the real purpose of religiosity." That is going on. So according to our Vedic principle, there is no question of manufacturing a new type of religion. No. So Lord Caitanya introduced this Hare Kṛṣṇa movement; not that He manufactured something. No. > Now, in this age, Kali-yuga, which has begun about five thousand years past, in this age, it is recommended, *kalau tad dhari-kīrtanāt:* you can realize yourself simply by chanting this Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra.* And if you take to this simple process, result will be that *ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam The rubbish thing which has gathered in your heart will be cleansed. And what is that rubbish thing? That rubbish thing is also described, that *yasyātma-buddhiḥ kuṇape tri-dhātuke*. --- **[1969: Conversation Before Lecture Brandeis University](spoken/1969/690429r1.bos)** > Is not that, Lord Jesus Christ said? So hippies may be sinners. We raise them to the pious life. But we say, "Don't do this. Don't do this sinful act. Don't take intoxication. Don't do this. Don't do this." We hate sin, not the sinners, actually. If we hate sinners, then where is the possibility of our preaching? > So she came to the door, Jadurāṇī. She came to the door and she said, "Hare Kṛṣṇa," and she said, "Come in." I came in and she started talking to me, and that's... I got started. So when I seen her, I said, "That's not gypsies. That's not gypsies." And I explained it to her. "Oh," she said, "I seen the curtains in the window," she said, "and I thought they were gypsies." "Oh, well," I explained it to her. "Oh," I says. I let her have it, there was no gypsies there. So she used to see me coming down to go to the temple. It's so nice, yeah? Do you like that place, Swāmījī? --- **[1970: Śrī Īśopaniṣad and Initiations](spoken/1970/700429ip.la)** > You cannot surpass the laws of material nature; Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā*. You cannot transgress any law. You know that even for your personal, if you little..., eat more, little, then immediately you are diseased; you will be sick. You cannot transgress. Very nice thing, if you want to eat more, then next day you will have to starve; you will be sick. So you have to accept exactly the same thing as it is allotted to you by the Lord. You cannot transgress. Therefore you have got very great... > Next paragraph: "Human beings are not meant for quarreling like cats and dogs. They must be intelligent enough to realize the importance of human life and to realize the aims of human life. The Vedic literature is meant for humanity and not for the cats and dogs. Cats and dogs can kill other animals for food, and for that there is no question of sin on their part, but if a man kills an animal for the satisfaction of his uncontrolled taste buds, he is responsible for breaking the laws of nature, and therefore he must be punished." --- **[1972: Lecture [with interpreter](spoken/1972/720429le.tok)** > So religion is a kind of faith, but faith can be changed. But the knowledge which is essential in life, that cannot be changed. Therefore this culture, although it appears like a religious system, but it is the essential knowledge of life. Religion or faith you can change from one to another, but you must know the essential value of your life. And because we have no, I mean to say, connection at the present moment with the essential knowledge of life, we are thinking that you are separate from me, I am separate from you. > Just like we are all human being, but for want of adequate knowledge I am thinking, "I am Indian," you are thinking you are Japanese, somebody is thinking he is American, and yet another is thinking that he is something else. Actually we are one. We are energy of Kṛṣṇa, or God. So just like in dream I accept a different position, forgetting my real identification, and I think that I have gone far away from home, and I am flying, or I am in the forest—so many things I may dream—but that is not actual fact. --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.9.1–12](spoken/1972/720429sb.tok)** > Therefore Rūpa Gosvāmī adored Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, *namo mahā-vadānyāya kṛṣṇa-prema-pradāya te* : "Oh, You are the greatest of the munificent." *Namo mahā... Vadānya* means the greatest munificent, who gives charity in the greatest... So Caitanya Mahāprabhu is giving that. What is that? *Kṛṣṇa-prema.* Simply by loving Kṛṣṇa, you are promoted. This is the greatest gift. The human society is so rascal, they cannot understand what is this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. The greatest gift to the human society given by Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. > Because Kṛṣṇa, He is so kind, at the same time so strict also. Strict. If you have got a pinch of material desire, you cannot go to Vaikuṇṭha. You cannot go. Therefore *niṣkiñcanānām.* You have to become completely *niṣkiñcana:* nothing wanted of this material world. That is called *tapasya. Anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam*. If we want to utilize Kṛṣṇa... You can utilize. If you want kingdom, Kṛṣṇa will give you kingdom. That is not very difficult for you [Him]. --- **[1973: Morning Walk](spoken/1973/730429mw.la)** > Not only in India; all over the world. At the present moment, the real, transcendental spiritual life means to follow the cult or instruction of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Otherwise, everyone is bogus. They're simply wasting their time. They have no knowledge of spiritual life. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu's cult means Kṛṣṇa consciousness. *Yāre dekha, tāre kaha kṛṣṇa-upadeśa*. > So long it is exhaling, the universes are coming out. And inhaling, all finished. Then He becomes the biggest. Then you search out wherefrom this biggest personality comes. Then you come to Saṅkarṣaṇa. If you come to Saṅkarṣaṇa, then you come to Nārāyaṇa. If you come to Nārāyaṇa, then you come to Baladeva. If you come to Baladeva, then you come Kṛṣṇa. And therefore Kṛṣṇa: the biggest. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.37](spoken/1973/730429sb.la)** > So these things, these are the symptoms of really Kṛṣṇa conscious person, that one should think always in danger without Kṛṣṇa. This is the first step. And by taking shelter of Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet, one should always feel safe: "Now I am under the protection..." Kṛṣṇa says, *kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati*. It is a fact. If you become a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa, there is no question of danger. *Praṇaśyati.* Kṛṣṇa gives protection to everyone. Without His protection, nobody can live even for a single moment. That's a fact. So if you think that "Kṛṣṇa is giving protection to everyone; then what is the use of becoming a special devotee?" No, there is use. Just like the king gives protection to everyone, every one of the citizens. That is his duty. But he has got special protection for his own men. This is the distinction. > Similarly, Kṛṣṇa loves everyone because everyone is part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. But He takes special care of the devotee. Therefore He says, *kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati*. His *bhakta,* His devotee, will never be... He's always allowed to see the comforts of the devotees. And the devotees are always busy to see how Kṛṣṇa is satisfied—by dressing Him, by supplying Him food, by serving Him. Always engaged. Similarly, Kṛṣṇa is also always engaged to see "How My devotees will be happy." This is the process going on. --- **[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740429mw.hyd)** > Caitanya Mahāprabhu used to give to His mother some gold when there was need of money. "Mother, I got this gold. So you can utilize it." The mother would think that "We are poor men. We have no gold. Wherefrom this boy brings gold?" So he [she] was doubtful because he [she] was thinking, "My son is mad, sometimes crazy." So he [she] would go, "Is it real gold? Just see." Then, "Yes, it is real gold." "Hmm, how He got it?" You see? [break]...many *yogīs,* they make such gold for meeting their expenditure. Yes. Still in India they know how to make gold from copper. Yes. The process is they will drink mercury at night, and in the morning they will urine on the copper coins. And then after some hours, the copper coins taken and put into the fire, it becomes gold. And it is scientific that some molecules of mercury, if mixed with copper, it is gold. Gold is combination of mercury and copper. But the people cannot mix it. They have tried. That is called alchemist. They tried to mix it. Because they do not know the process, as soon as mercury is put into the fire, it immediately goes out. You melt copper, and in hot copper, if you put mercury, it will not melt together. Immediately it will throw away. So some of the *yogīs,* they know. They digest copper, er, mercury, and it comes in the form urine. And then the copper is put there. There is interaction, and then put into fire. It becomes gold. >like an ass, simply for sense gratification. Therefore it is warned in the *Bhāgavatam, nāyaṁ deho deha-bhājāṁ nṛloke kāṣṭān kāmān arhati*. --- **[1977: Morning Conversation](spoken/1977/770429r1.bom)** > [pause] So that is written nice. He wanted to criticize me, but he could not do it very strongly. He did not like the idea that I am sticking to *Bhagavad-gītā*. That was his... But it is shown that I am sticking to *Bhagavad-gītā*, that is our mission. And it is a science. Why he called sectarian? When Kṛṣṇa says anything, that is science. "Two plus two equal to four" is acceptable by everyone. Why it is sect...? Actually, all religion is going on under the plea, "We believe." What is this nonsense, "We believe"? If you believe "Two plus two equal to five," will it be correct? Their religion is "We believe." So our *Bhagavad-gītā* is not like that. It is fact. That is the difference. > So this preparation for tourist... Tourist, Indian tourist, means going to some holy place. They have no other sightseeing, no program. All villagers, they are still... The pilgrimage in holy places, now no educated man goes. Very rarely. All these villagers by thousands... They... You see this Tirupati, Tirumala. All the contribution by the villagers. By their hard-earned money they keep something for going. You have seen Tirupati, Tirumal...? Standing for hours to contribute in a line. Hundreds of people. They'll come, contribute something. Then they'll shave their head, see the Deity, have some bath in the adjoining lake. Then they'll take *prasādam.* There is very big tank. Everywhere. In India, wherever some famous temple is there, there is a tank. Now the haircutting, that *lakhs* of rupees are sold to foreign countries is hair. Heaps. These managers, they are selling the hairs. Very big business. The foreign countries, the black hair, they purchase it at good price for making wig. --- ## Letters on April 29 *Letters from this day: 22* --- **[1968: Letter to Aniruddha](letters/1968/680429_aniruddha)** > I am so much pleased to learn that the Los Angeles temple is improving in opulence. --- **[1968: Letter to Nandarani Dayananda](letters/1968/680429_nandarani_dayananda)** > I am very pleased to receive your letters of April 23, 1968, and I am very thankful to you for your nice sentiments. --- **[1969: Letter to First National City Bank](letters/1969/690429_first_national_city_bank)** > Kindly transfer from my above mentioned account $3,500 to the Bank of America (Pico-La Cienega Branch, Los Angeles—Branch #308) for credit of my savings account there \#3082-80075, and send me the advice of charge at the above address. --- **[1969: Letter to Hayagriva](letters/1969/690429_hayagriva)** > I have already sent Pradyumna the schedule of my touring in this part of the country. --- **[1969: Letter to Upendra](letters/1969/690429_upendra)** > Do not be worried that there is only yourself and Gajendra as full time members. --- **[1970: Letter to Brahmananda](letters/1970/700429_brahmananda)** > I beg to acknowledge receipt of the text proof for BTG #32. You also wanted to come here to take further inspiration from the L.A. temple activities. --- **[1970: Letter to Pradyumna](letters/1970/700429_pradyumna)** > When there is an important Dvadasi, the Ekadasi fasting is transferred on the Dvadasi, and this is called Mahadvadasi. The 26th October, 1970, is actually Dvadasi, so the fasting is observed together, or Ekadasi fasting is disregarded, and the Dvadasi (Mahadvadasi) fasting is taken as important. --- **[1970: Letter to Shyama Dasi](letters/1970/700429_shyama_dasi)** > Nanda Kumar has placed the cloth on the wall just above the Deities and upon it is a picture of Radha Krsna. The regulative principles are designed to take us gradually to the platform of spontaneous love of Krsna, which is the perfection of human life. Those who think they have already attained such perfection and give up the regulative principles are called sahajiya, or those who take things cheaply and simply imitate. --- **[1974: Letter to Riktananda](letters/1974/740429_riktananda)** > Your proposal to come to Vrindaban and serve the deities in our new Krsna Balarama temple is approved by me. We require many first class devotees to make the temple alive with transcendental bliss, so as your departure is also sanctioned by Jayatirtha, you make your plans and come to Vrindaban at your convenience. --- **[1977: Letter to Brahmananda](letters/1977/770429_brahmananda)** > The letter which you have sent from the student, Charles, is wonderful. I have asked that it be published in our English Back To Godhead as well as in all of the Indian language Back to Godheads here in India. Charles' letter shows that he is very intelligent and has begun to understand our philosophy. --- **[1977: Letter to Charles Krsna Balarama](letters/1977/770429_charles_krsna_balarama)** > "The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater (outcaste)."
