Those married were Advaita and Balai, *Haṁsadūta* and *Himāvatī*. --- **[1969: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.2](spoken/1969/690428sb.bos)** > > mahat-sevāṁ dvāram āhur vimuktes > tamo-dvāraṁ yoṣitāṁ saṅgi-saṅgam > mahāntas te sama-cittāḥ praśāntā > vimanyavaḥ suhṛdaḥ sādhavo ye > [[sb/5/5/2|[SB. 5.5.2] ]] Now, in the last meeting we have discussed that this life is meant for self-realization. This human form of life especially... --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.9.10](spoken/1972/720428sb.tok)** > So what is the purport? Just see. And *surāsurārcitāḥ.* There, there is no more distinction between *sura* and *asura.* Here, *asuras,* they are not devotees. They deny. So *asura,* how the *asura* goes there? The *asura* does not go there as *asura,* but he goes there as devotee. Just like Prahlāda Mahārāja: he is the son of an *asura,* Hiraṇyakaśipu; therefore he is classified *asura,* son of *asura.* But this *asura* quality is no more existing there, although he is promoted. In other words, when one is transferred to the Vaikuṇṭha world there is no such distinction between *sura* and *asura.* Why there should be? Everyone is engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service. > "Although the illusory energy is also a part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, still, illusory energy is differentiated from the Lord. The illusory energy is not, however, false, as claimed by the monist philosophers. The rope accepted as a snake may be an illusion to a particular person, but the rope is a fact, and the snake is also a fact. The illusion of water on the hot desert may be illusion for the ignorant animal searching out water in the desert, but the desert and water are actual facts. Therefore the material creation of the Lord may be an illusion to the nondevotee class of men, but to a devotee, even the material creation of the Lord is a fact, as the manifestation of His external energy. But this energy of the Lord is not all. The Lord has His internal energy also, which has another creation, known to be the Vaikuṇṭha-lokas, where there is no ignorance, no passion, no illusion and no past and present. --- **[1973: Morning Walk](spoken/1973/730428mw.la)** > Kṛṣṇa says, "There is further." That is the living force. That they do not know. They are thinking, "Life is combination of these matters." But Kṛṣṇa says, "No." *Apareyam.* This is inferior. The superior energy is living entity. So we are also *sāṅkhya* philosopher. But we are taking direction from Kṛṣṇa, and they're making their own attempt. That is the difference. They're depending on their own intelligence. We don't depend on my own intelligence. We depend on Kṛṣṇa's intelligence. That is the difference. Then, if Kṛṣṇa is perfect, then my intelligence is perfect. I may be not perfect, but because I take Kṛṣṇa's intelligence, therefore I'm perfect. > So we are concerned with the operator, Kṛṣṇa, not with the machine. If you say, "How do you know that He's the operator?" He says, *mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sa-carācaram* : "Under My superintendence, the whole cosmic manifestation is working." The difference is you don't believe; I believe. That's all. I take it immediately: "Yes, Kṛṣṇa is operating." Therefore I have no problem. Somebody's operating, that you have to accept. But you do not know who is that person. At least, we have got knowledge, "Here is the person." That's all. Now if you say, "No, Kṛṣṇa is not the person," then you have to accept another person. So present him, that "Here is the person, not Kṛṣṇa. Another one." That you cannot. So in the absence of your knowledge, you have to accept my proposal. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.36](spoken/1973/730428sb.la)** > So Kṛṣṇa comes to introduce the system by which one can get relief from this continuous, troublesome life. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir, glānir bhavati*. Just like you suffer when you create some disturbance in the law. Then you suffer. We have got experience. If we violate the state laws, then you have to suffer. Similarly, religious... Religion means God's laws. They do not know. "Religion means faith." Faith, you may have faith something. I may have faith something. I may believe you or you may not believe me. That is not religion. > Then further. As soon as you become expert in hearing and chanting, then the next stage is *smaraṇam. Smaraṇam:* thinking of. Anything you speak or hear, later on you contemplate, you meditate, *smaraṇam.* So *smaraṇam* is the third stage. First of all, one must begin with hearing, *śravaṇam.* Otherwise what about, meditation? If you do not know the subject matter of meditation, where is the question of meditation? Therefore we must first of all hear about the subject matter of meditation. And that is chanting. *Śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ*.* About Lord Viṣṇu. --- **[1974: Bhagavad-gītā 7.2](spoken/1974/740428bg.hyd)** > So our aim should be to understand Kṛṣṇa *tattvataḥ,* in truth, not superficially, not by foolish commentary. If we simply try to follow what Kṛṣṇa has said, what is the difficulty? There is no difficulty, but foolishly we interpret in a different way, and *māyā* takes away our knowledge, *māyayāpahṛta-jñānā*. He is thinking that he is very learned scholar, but he is fool number..., rascal number one. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says *māyayāpahṛta-jñānā. Na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ*. Kṛṣṇa is speaking so many ways about Himself. Without understanding Kṛṣṇa in His own way, we are trying to understand Kṛṣṇa in different way. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *māyayāpahṛta-jñānā, āsuri bhāvam*. > Therefore, He comes personally, *yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata, tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham*. The general opportunity for human being is to understand God, or Kṛṣṇa, and go back to Him again. We have come from Him, but we are attracted by this material enjoyment, which is not very pleasurable. It is suffering. Just like here, without this fan, it was uncomfortable, excessive heat. So excessive heat, excessive cold, so many things, *ādhibhautika, ādhyātmika, ādhidaivika,* we are actually suffering always. This is the nature of this material world, stringent laws of the material world. And still we are trying to become happy by some adjustment. This is called struggle for existence. In this way we cannot be happy. --- **[1977: Conversation: Vairāgya, Salaries, and Political Etiquette](spoken/1977/770428r1.bom)** > That is *vairāgya.* So *vairāgya-vidyā...* Otherwise why big, big persons, they renounced everything? Bharata Mahārāja, young man, the emperor of the whole world, gave up everything. Caitanya Mahāprabhu personally teaches—young man, good, beautiful wife, young wife, so affectionate mother, so much honor in the society, Nimāi Paṇḍita, so beautiful body... *Tyaktvā sudustyaja-surepsita-rājya-lakṣmīm*. Surepsita.* Caitanya Mahāprabhu's position was, even the demigods, they desired such family life. But He still gave up. That is teaching. Therefore Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya says, *vairāgya-vidyā-nija-bhak..., śikṣārtham:* "to teach others." He understood that in order to teach others *vairāgya-vidyā...* He is the Supreme Person. *Vairāgya-vidyā-nija-bhakti-yoga-śikṣārtham ekaḥ purāṇa-puruṣaḥ* : "That He was, Supreme Lord. Now He has appeared as Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya." *Śarīra-dhārī:* "He has accepted one body as Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya." So these things should be stopped, that they should live comfortably with husband and wife, children, and take salary from the... You decide. This is not to our... Besides that, in our BBT it is clearly written that "Fifty percent for printing book and fifty percent for..." So you cannot violate this. Those who can give voluntary service, "Welcome." Otherwise we don't require. At least they should not be given any salary. That is very bad. This is against principle. > He'll have to develop certain type of body according to his desire of enjoyment. This is nature's law. Then where is the question of going back to home, back to Godhead? Why so many varieties of life? There is Brahmā, and there is ant in the stool. So *vairāgya-vidyā-nija... Vāsudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogaḥ prayojitaḥ, janayaty āśu vairāgyam*. And *vairāgyam* means *jñānam ca.* When one is in full knowledge that "To remain in this material world is useless for me"—*jñānam*—"I am simply wasting my time by repetition of birth and death," then he can have *vairāgya.* "Stop this!" If this sense is not awakened, there is no *bhakti.* It is not so easy. *Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śocati na kāṅkṣati*. --- **[1977: Conversation: Animals' Expertise](spoken/1977/770428r2.bom)** > This teaching... This is a teaching of *Bhagavad-gītā.* And they are taking *Bhagavad-gītā* for solving these problems. That's all. Ants' struggle. Violence, nonviolence and... So such big, big rascals are guiding us. What benefit they have given? And they are praised. *Śva-viḍ-varāhoṣṭra-kharaiḥ saṁstutaḥ...*. He's an animal, and he's praised by some small animals. That's all. This is their position. They are not actual leader. They are animal, but because we are small animal, we are praising. So it is very difficult to understand our philosophy, but still, we have to preach. That is our mission. A little drop, maybe like a film or less than that... Still, they are... And again, when you cleanse this, you kill them—you become implicated. You have killed. You have to suffer. They are disturbing; still, you cannot kill them. This is your position. But people are with Flit [a bug killer] killing thousands of mosquitoes and flies, becoming implicated. --- ## Letters on April 28 *Letters from this day: 14* --- **[1969: Letter to Kirtanananda](letters/1969/690428_kirtanananda)** > 95 Glenville Avenue Allston, Mass. --- **[1969: Letter to Mukunda](letters/1969/690428_mukunda)** > Please convey my blessings to the others also.
