# April 22 ## Spoken on April 22 *Lectures from this day: 15 recordings* --- **[1972: Room Conversation](spoken/1972/720422r1.tok)** > So actually we are teaching what is human civilization. But we must be also like human being, not cats and dogs. Otherwise, how can you teach? If I am like cats and dogs, I cannot criticize others as cats and dogs. I must be first of all human being; then I shall teach others how to become human being. I must become first of all devotee; then I shall request others to become devotee. Ā*pani ācari jīve śikhāilā bhakti*. First behave yourself perfectly; then teach others to become perfect. That is preacher. > So all these books are there. You see one *śloka* studying, knowing, it takes one hour. So there are millions of *ślokas.* How much you have to study. So these things are to be noted. This Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement means perfection, all-round perfection. Then people will much appreciate. There is no doubt about it. And we can go anywhere, everywhere, because we are pure. We are giving the right thing. --- **[1972: Room Conversation](spoken/1972/720422r2.tok)** > This is their theory. There is no plan. It is like this. Because they are creating like that, there is no plan. Then why there is...? Therefore they say, "It is legalized prostitution, marriage. There is no need of marriage." > We say that there is necessity of a *putra,* or a son; therefore to have a son, a wife is necessary. Therefore wife is accepted. This is a plan. But they say that it is... "Whenever you feel, just like cats and dogs, sexually inclined, have sex." That's all. Where is plan? --- **[1972: Conversation with Dai Nippon Representative](spoken/1972/720422r3.tok)** > And how our life can become successful? *Varṇāśrama-vibhāgaśaḥ, svanuṣṭhitasya dharmasya saṁsiddhir hari-toṣaṇam.* If you can please Lord Buddha or Kṛṣṇa—it doesn't matter; I have already explained, Lord Buddha is expansion of Kṛṣṇa—so if Lord Buddha is satisfied, then your life is successful. It doesn't matter what you are doing, but by your action Lord Buddha must be satisfied. Just like your assistants: their business is to satisfy you. Whatever they may do, it doesn't matter. If you are satisfied, their business is successful. > And in the *Vedas* there is recommendation for animal sacrifice in some sacrificial ceremony, not ordinarily. And that sacrifice is meant for testing the power of chanting *mantra.* An animal would be put into the fire, and it would come again with renewed life. In this way, there is recommendation in the *Vedas* that some animals... But people misunderstood it. People began to sacrifice, rather, slaughter. At that time Lord Buddha appeared. So we worship Lord Buddha as Kṛṣṇa. You are all Buddhist? --- **[1972: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.9.2](spoken/1972/720422sb.tok)** > "I" and "mine." This is going on. *Mamāham iti manyate. Janasya moho 'yam.* This is called illusion. So the *māyā* is acting very nicely to keep us under her control. *Māyayā. Daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī*. Māyā* wants to keep you under her control, every one of us. Why? Because we are offender to Kṛṣṇa, she wants to punish us, kick us very nicely. That is her business. And therefore she wants to keep under her control everyone. And therefore she has three qualities, *tri-guṇa.* Just like *tri-guṇa. Guṇa* means rope also. You have seen? In the rope there are three fibers. And three fibers, if it is twisted nicely and again twisted together, it is very strong rope. *Tri-guṇa.* So *guṇa* means rope. So we are bound up. > Therefore those who are *yogīs, ramante yoginaḥ anante*, they are not desirous of enjoying this creation of *māyā. Yoginaḥ anante.* They want to enjoy in the association of the *ananta,* not *māyā. Māyā* is temporary. However *māyā* may exhibit in so many ways, it is temporary. This nice city or this nice country, this nice world, decorated—one day it will be finished, all finished. *Pralaya-payodhi-jale dhṛtavān asi vedam.* When there will be inundation, all these planets will be merged into water, finished. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.30](spoken/1973/730422sb.la)** > Therefore we request our student first of all break these four pillars, so the roof of sinful life will collapse. Then chant Hare Kṛṣṇa; you remain fixed up in transcendental position. Simple method. Because one cannot realize God if his life is sinful. That is not possible. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *yeṣām anta-gataṁ pāpam. Anta-gatam* means finished. One who has finished sinful life, *yeṣām anta-gataṁ pāpaṁ janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām*. > Aja* means unborn; *avyayātmā,* without any destruction. So Kṛṣṇa is existing as, in the beginning of this *stotra,* Kuntī addressed Kṛṣṇa that "You are within, You are without—still invisible." Kṛṣṇa is within, without. That we have explained. *Īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe 'rjuna tiṣṭhati*. Sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭaḥ*. Kṛṣṇa is situated in everyone's heart. Therefore He is within everything. *Aṇḍāntara-stha-paramāṇu-cayāntara-stham* [Bs. 5.35]. He, He is within the atom even, and without also. --- **[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740422mw.hyd)** > That *surā-bāḍi* means wine shop, where wine is distilled or sold. That is called *surā-bāḍi.* And those who are wine sellers, they are called *surā.* So I see that Nityānanda is going to a wine shop. So if I say, "Oh, Nityānanda is now spoiled. He is going to wine shop," no. We should not say that. We should know Nityānanda is pure. If He is going to *surā-bāḍi,* wine shop, He has some business. But because He is going to the *surā-bāḍi,* He is not polluted. I shall not follow Him, "Because Nityānanda has gone *surā-bāḍi,* therefore I shall go." Kṛṣṇa danced with young girls, others' wives, others'.... That does not mean I shall imitate that. What Kṛṣṇa has said, we have to follow that. That's all. Kṛṣṇa never said that "You also dance like Me in *rāsa* dance." Has He said anywhere? Then how can you do that? Whatever He does, He has got purpose. His work is all right. But I cannot imitate His work. The example is given that the sunshine is soaking urine. Can you imitate that you drink urine? So *tejīyasāṁ na doṣāya*. If Christ has done something, he is Lord Jesus Christ, he might have done it for some purpose, but we cannot follow that. We have to follow what he has ordered. That's all. [break] > Even by killing vegetable, you are also as sinful as killing animal. But because we offer to Kṛṣṇa, therefore we are not sinful. Kṛṣṇa wants it. Just like Kṛṣṇa wanted Arjuna to fight and kill the other party. Therefore Arjuna is not infected with the sin. So here Kṛṣṇa is asking, "Give Me this foodstuff," and Kṛṣṇa knows that I will eat the remnants of the foodstuff. So I am not responsible. We have no very much study of the Muslim, but instead of criticizing others, better we shall preach our own cult. But if there is occasion when somebody attacks, then we should be prepared. But our positive business should be to inform people what is the nature of God, as they are stated in *Bhagavad-gītā* and in *Bhāgavatam.* --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.8](spoken/1974/740422sb.hyd)** > That is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā: mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjayaḥ*. Leaders there are, gods are, there are. God means controller. There is controller always. So there are many gods. Anyone is god, because he is, somehow or other, he is a controller; a leader also. But we are meaning the supreme leader, the supreme controller. That is Kṛṣṇa. Leader you have to accept. But... Controller you have to accept. But nobody is supreme leader or supreme controller. That is Kṛṣṇa. Every leader is also controlled by some other leader. But Kṛṣṇa is such a leader that He is not controlled by any other leader. That is Kṛṣṇa. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat : "There is no more superior leader." > Therefore to become devotee is sometimes very troublesome, because even the father becomes enemy. This is the position of the devotee. But still, you have to become devotee. That is your success of life. But the warning is there, that as soon as you become a devotee, you become enemies of so many, especially nowadays. You know that recently I was refused entrance in Africa. The government did not allow me to enter. What is my fault? Because I am a devotee. This is my fault. So we are meeting so many dangerous position. In Bombay our temple construction has been refused by the Commissioner of Police. Why? Now, because we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. They have openly written that "The *bhajana,* nuisance." You see? This is our position. *Bhajana...* The Kṛṣṇa says, Bhagavān says, that *catur-vidhā bhajante mām*. --- **[1976: Bhagavad-gītā 9.4](spoken/1976/760422bg.mel)** > So our civilization is based on that way. You require food. That's fact. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *annād bhavanti bhūtāni*. You produce your food. Anywhere you can produce your food. The land is enough land. In Australia you have got enough land. In Africa you have enough land, uncultivated. No, they'll not produce food. They will produce coffee and tea and slaughter animals. This is their business. I understand that in your country animals are slaughtered and exported for trade. Why export? You produce your own food and be satisfied. Why you are after that piece of hundred dollars paper? Produce your own food and eat sumptuously, be healthy and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. This is civilization. This is civilization. > Kṛṣṇa says, "I appear in this material world. I appear just like ordinary child appears. I take birth." Actually, Kṛṣṇa does not take birth. If you read *Bhāgavata,* you will see how He appeared. Anyway, even if you take Him that He appeared as the son of Vasudeva or Mother Yaśodā... You can say that He played just like a child in the hands of Mother Yaśodā. So that's all right. But you try to understand what kind of, this child display or *līlā* of Kṛṣṇa in front of Mother Yaśodā. That is required. *Janma karma me divyam*. That is all divine, transcendental. So if we understand that "God has become a child" or "These people, accepting a child of certain woman whose name is Yaśodā as God," then you are mistaken. And if you understand that God has come as a child of this great devotee, Mother Yaśodā, just to fulfill her desire... Because Mother Yaśodā wanted God as her son, so God, being very much pleased on this devotee, He has appeared as a son of Mother Yaśodā. Two understanding. If you take Kṛṣṇa that "Here is a child born in a *vaiśya* family of Mother Yaśodā, Nanda Mahārāja, and these people are accepting Him as God," then you are mistaken. --- **[1976: Room Conversation](spoken/1976/760422r1.mel)** --- **[1976: Room Conversation with Guests](spoken/1976/760422r3.mel)** > So this is a chance in the human form of body that the consciousness should be developed. Therefore we are presenting these books. They can understand. We are not presenting the books to the cats and dogs. They cannot understand. Those who are developed conscious, they can understand, and they can understand the value of life, what is the objective of life. Then he acts accordingly, and his life becomes successful. Otherwise, if we do not develop consciousness, simply eat like animal, sleep like animal, enjoy sex life like animal, and try to defend ourself like animal, then where is the difference between man and the animal? At the present moment they are busy with these four things: how to eat, how to sleep, how to have best process of sex life, and how to defend by atomic bomb. This is their advancement of civilization. And this is dog's civilization. A dog is also trying for the same purpose: how to eat, how sleep, how to have sex and how to defend. That's all. Any animal is trying. Any small insect, it is trying for the same thing. > Everything is *paramparā.* If you receive the knowledge from the authority, then you are in perfect knowledge, simply by..., not by reading the books. Therefore our method is to accept the perfect *guru* to understand the subject matter. But still, if one reads the books as it is from authorities, there is chance of understanding. Real thing is training. So our institution is training. Not only training—full knowledge, practical and theoretical. That is real scientific. If you give up one side, then you can give up the theoretical side, but practical side you cannot give up. Then you'll never learn. The two sides: practical and theoretical. So that is real scientific knowledge. So two sides are presented in our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, and they are being thoroughly trained up. --- **[1977: Conversation with disciples of Chinmayananda and Shivananda Ashram](spoken/1977/770422r2.bom)** > As Arjuna... "Whatever You say, I have accepted." That is the need, not that "I am very learned scholar; I can change the meaning." That is not good. You are not greater authority than Kṛṣṇa. Thinking like that is foolishness. Kṛṣṇa is authority. All the *ācāryas—*Rāmānujācārya, Madhvācārya, Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu—they have all accepted *kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam*. How you can speak something else what, against what, the instruction of Kṛṣṇa? > After leaving your home and everything, if you do not understand Kṛṣṇa, *śrama eva hi kevalam*—it is simply waste of time. If you want to waste your time, that's all... --- **[1977: Room Conversation](spoken/1977/770422r3.bom)** > And from the very beginning, Pakistan is controlled by crooked men. They are Muhammadans, rascals, crooked, not cultured—crude. You won't find amongst the Muhammadans very great mathematicians, philosophers or highly... Very, very rare. --- ## Letters on April 22 *Letters from this day: 22* --- **[1967: Letter to Ballabhi](letters/1967/670422_ballabhi)** > I know that you poor girl have been frustrated by the so called society and you deeply needed the shelter of Krishna Consciousness. --- **[1967: Letter to Harsarani](letters/1967/670422_harsarani)** > I hope you are __ Kirtana nicely and feeling transcendental happiness.
