# April 18 ## Spoken on April 18 *Lectures from this day: 8 recordings* --- **[1966: Bhagavad-gītā 2.59–69](spoken/1966/660418bg.ny.md)** > Now, that can be very easily attained if we engage our senses, or engage our consciousness. When I engage my consciousness into the transcendental loving service of the supreme consciousness, these things automatically take place so that even there is, I mean to say, there is, I mean to say, cause of my falling, still, I shall not fall down. Even there is enticement, still I shall not fall, because *paraṁ dṛṣṭvā,* I have seen something which is far, far better enjoyment than this material enjoyment. So we have to come to that point. And what is that point? *Tāni sarvāṇi saṁyamya yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ*. The Lord says, "Therefore you, you can control your senses..." *Sarvāṇi.* There are so many senses. "You can control your senses," *yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ,* "when you engage the senses in..., in relation with My service or unto Me." > This process is so perfect. Kṛṣṇa says that *raso 'pi,* even if you have that desire, so you do not like to use it. Although you have got the privilege, but you are at liberty, but you do not like to do it. *Raso 'py asya, rasa-varjaṁ raso 'py asya.* Although he has all the full capacity... Not that he has become impotent or he has no capacity for sex life. In spite of his having all strength and all capacity, still, he does not like: "Oh, this is... What is this?" You see? That stage comes. *Rasa-varjaṁ raso 'py asya paraṁ dṛṣṭvā.* Why? He has got some superior things, superior sex life, in which he wants to engage himself. --- **[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.26](spoken/1973/730418sb.la)** > So Kuntī says that this intoxication position, *madaḥ, edhamāna-madaḥ*,* increasing, *pumān,* such person, *naivārhati,* they cannot feelingly address, "*Jaya* Rādhā-Mādhava." They cannot feelingly. That is not possible. Their feeling, spiritual feeling, is lost. They cannot feelingly address, because they do not know. "Oh, this God is for poor man. They cannot have sufficient food. Let them go to the church and ask, 'O God, give us our daily bread.' We have got enough bread. Why shall I go to church?" This is their opinion. Therefore nowadays, in the days of economic development, nobody's interested in going to the church or temple. "What this nonsense? Why shall I go to the church for asking bread? We shall develop economic condition, and there will be sufficient supply of bread." > So those who are intoxicated, they cannot understand. They think: "It is my property. I have stolen. I have stolen this land of America from the Red Indians. Now it is my property." But he does not know that he's a thief. He's a thief. *Stena eva sa ucyate*, in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* One who takes the property of God and claims his own, he's a thief. *Stena eva sa ucyate.* Therefore we have got communistic idea, the devotee, Kṛṣṇa conscious person. We have got Kṛṣṇa conscious communistic program. What is that? That everything belongs to God. Just like they are thinking that everything belongs to the state. These Communists, these Moscow, Moscowites, or the Russian, or the Chinese, they are thinking state-wise. But we are thinking not state-wise; we are thinking God-wise. Everything belongs to God. The same philosophy, you extend. Simply you require little intelligence, little intelligence. Why do you think that this state belongs to a few number of people? If you think that there are population, American population, this land of America belongs to this population... Why do you think like that? You think this is property of God. --- **[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740418mw.bom)** > *...yuktena cetasā nānya-gāminā.* One has to practice. That means his determination is not yet fixed up. Because he is very rich, he is thinking that "This is all right." That is another defect of becoming very much rich. *Bhogaiśvarya prasaktānāṁ tayā upahṛta-cetasām* : "Those who are too much attached to this material enjoyment and..., by which his consciousness is bewildered..." All these defects are there because he is too much attached to material enjoyment. > When one becomes free from the *rajo-guṇa* and *tamo-guṇa,* the symptom is... *Rajo-guṇa* and *tamo-guṇa* means lust and greediness. So when this *rajo-guṇa* and *tamo-guṇa* is absent, then the *sattva-guṇa* becomes prominent. Every *guṇa* is there. *Tato rajas-tamo-bhavaḥ kama-lobhadayas ca ye, ceta etair...* The consciousness does not become infected by the resultant action of *tamo-guṇa* and *rajo-guṇa.* Then the only *sattva-guṇa* remains. So when one is situated in *sattva-guṇa, sthitaḥ sattve prasīdati,* then he becomes jubilant, *prasīdati.* That is *brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā*. So one has to overcome the jurisdiction of *rajo-guṇa* and *tamo-guṇa.* At the present moment the whole world is covered mostly by *tamo-guṇa* and little by *rajo-guṇa.* --- **[1974: Press Conference](spoken/1974/740418pc.hyd)** > Therefore the society must be divided into four classes of men, as it is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā: cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ*. There are three *guṇas,* and the *sattva-guṇa, brāhmaṇa,* a class of ideal men, must be there in the society so that people can follow them. *Yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhaḥ lokas tad anuvartate*. If there is no ideal men in the society, how they can be of good character? Therefore the brahminical class of men, I mean to say, in quality, *satyaṁ śamo damas titikṣā ārjava, jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam...*. There must be an ideal class of men, *brāhmaṇa.* The next class, *kṣatriyas,* who can give protection to the society, they should come forward whenever there is danger. They will come forward to give protection to the society. Similarly, next, the *vaiśya,* they must produce. *Kṛṣi-go-rakṣya-vāṇijyaṁ vaiśya-karma svabhāva-jam*. The class of men should be interested, produce food grains and give protection to the cows. > So we are teaching them that "Here is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa." So they are accepting. Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru*. So we are teaching that "Just always think of Kṛṣṇa, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra,* and you will remember Kṛṣṇa." *Man-manā bhava mad-bhaktaḥ.* "And just become devotee. Worship the Deity of Kṛṣṇa. Become His *bhakta.*" *Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī.* "Worship Lord Kṛṣṇa." *Māṁ namaskuru:* "Offer your obeisances to Kṛṣṇa." So we are teaching this *arcanam.* We have got hundred temples like this all over the world. And hundreds and thousands are joining. So this is practical. So they are accepting. Now it is our duty to give the actual Vedic culture, which is concise, summarized in the *Bhagavad-gītā. Sarvopaniṣad-gavaḥ,* the essence of all *Upaniṣads'* teaching. --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.6](spoken/1974/740418sb.hyd)** > That *bhajana,* this *bhagavad-bhajana,* is not for ordinary class of men. They must be very elevated. Therefore here it is said, *sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmaḥ. Para* and *apara*—these two words are there, *para* and *apara. Para* means spiritual, and *apara* means material. Just like in the *Bhagavad-gītā* in another place, *apareyam itas tu viddhi me prakṛtiṁ parām. Apara,* this material nature, *bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ, this earth, water, fire, air, mind, intelligence, they are material. *Bhinnā me prakṛtir aṣṭadhā. Apareyam.* But they are *apara. Apara* means material, inferior. There is another, spiritual nature. What is that? *Jīva-bhūta,* that living entity. Living entity's *para.* So Kṛṣṇa is also *para.* So when the living entity engages himself in the service of the supreme spiritual, Kṛṣṇa, that is called *paro dharmaḥ,* spiritual religion, not *apara. Apara* means material, and *para* means superior or spiritual. > So one has to come to the religious principle on the spiritual platform. That is real *dharma. Sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje*. It doesn't matter what religious system you are following. Because actually religion means to abide by the orders of God. That is religion, simply definition of religion. Just like good citizen means who abides by the state laws. He does not break the state laws. Similarly, any person, it doesn't matter whether he is Hindu, Muslim, Christian or this or that—it doesn't matter—if he is a devotee of the Supreme Lord, then his religion system is first class. Otherwise, *śrama eva hi kevalam*. --- **[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.7.6](spoken/1975/750418sb.vrn)** > So when Nārada instructed that "You write something which will help people to understand the Supreme," then he engaged himself in *bhakti-yoga,* because you cannot understand the Supreme Truth without engaging yourself in devotional service. Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, bhaktyā mām abhijānāti*. Only through devotion, submission, surrender you can understand Kṛṣṇa, not by your so-called scholarship or research work. No. *Bhaktyā mām abhijānāti.* Kṛṣṇa never said, "By cultivating knowledge, speculative knowledge, one can understand Me." No. *Bhaktyā mām abhijānāti*. So therefore Vyāsadeva engaged himself in *bhakti-yoga* to understand the Supreme Truth. That is stated, > So there are *māyās* of different kind. Kṛṣṇa's *māyā... Parāsya śaktir vividhaiva... Māyā* means potency. So from the Vedic knowledge we can understand that Kṛṣṇa has many types of potencies, *parāsya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate svābhāv... [Cc Madhya* 13.65*, purport],* because He has to execute so many affairs, this material world, spiritual world, and just imagine so big universe. There are innumerable universes, and in each and every universe there are so many planets, so many different kinds of living entities, and He has to manage everything. Therefore He is called Parameśvara. Parameśvara means the supreme controller. And Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭaḥ* : --- **[1977: Morning Talk](spoken/1977/770418r2.bom)** > Bhāgavata* is giving you this knowledge. Therefore everyone should read *Bhāgavata, Bhagavad-gītā.* So this is the *paramparā* system, we are giving. In future if they follow, they will also be delivered. This is wanted. We have made some plan. We are making. So this will be left. When we shall die, this will be left. And anyone who will accept this *paramparā* system will be promoted to Kṛṣṇa consciousness.* [Upendra enters] > > samāśritā ye pada-pallava-plavaṁ > > mahat-padaṁ puṇya-yaśo murāreḥ > > bhavāmbudhir vatsa-padaṁ paraṁ padaṁ > > padaṁ padaṁ yad vipadāṁ na teṣām > > ## Letters on April 18 *Letters from this day: 15* --- **[1961: Letter to Mr. Nakano](letters/1947-1965/610418_mr._nakano)** > I am a humble creature and I am just trying to do my bit in this connection because I was so ordered by my Spiritual Master Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja. --- **[1967: Letter to Hayagriva And Upendra](letters/1967/670418_hayagriva_and_upendra)** > With reference to our conversation on the phone, I may inform you that the printer Howard is not interested in hot type printing, because, when I met him last, I asked him whether he can print in sharp linotype. --- **[1970: Letter to Bahulasva](letters/1970/700418_bahulasva)** > I understand from your letter that people have been well impressed, so this is a good opportunity for advancing our missionary activities.
