## Spoken on April 12
*Lectures from this day: 11 recordings*

**[1969: Lecture](spoken/1969/690412le.ny)**
> Because *īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe 'rjuna tiṣṭhati*, the Lord is situated in everyone's heart. The Lord is situated in the heart of cats and dogs also. *Sarva-bhūtānām. Sarva-bhūtānām* means all living entities. It is not that God is not situated in the cat's heart or dog's heart. He is there. Therefore he is also incarnation, if that is the formula.
> And try to hear about God from realized souls—from Kṛṣṇa or His bona fide representative. That is very nice qualification. Simply hear. *Sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir.* In this way you remain in your position, try to understand how great is God through the authoritative sources, and your life will be so successful that one day you'll find God is within your hand. It is so nice thing. Just like you keep a child within your hand, just Mother Yaśodā kept Kṛṣṇa within his [her] arms always, you'll also have a similar position simply by hearing about Him.

**[1969: Room Conversation](spoken/1969/690412r1.ny)**
> So the system is six months father house and six months husband. In this way, going and coming. But when she is elderly, she can remain continually. But in the beginning... Because after all, she is girl, so she cannot tolerate the separation from father and mother. So six months here, six months... So Tulasī dāsa, as soon as the..., his father-in-law will come to take his daughter, he won't allow. He won't allow.
> That struck him very badly, and he immediately left that place and went to... Left home for good. Yes. And that was the initiation that he took up writing about Rāma. That is Tulasī dāsa's life. Just being, I mean to say, hurt by the words of wife, that "I love her..." Later on he understood, "Yes, she is right. So why should I be so much attached?" She uttered this words, "If you have got so much attachment for this skin and bone, oh, if you had so much attachment for Rāma, then your life would have been different." So he took it seriously: "Why not attachment for Rāma?"

**[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.20](spoken/1973/730412sb.ny)**
> Kṛṣṇa yei bhaje sei baḍa catura.* This is the statement in the *Caitanya-caritāmṛta.* Anyone who has taken to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, he is the most intelligent. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu says, *guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja, kona bhāgyavān jīva*. Ei rūpe brahmāṇḍa bhramite kona bhāgyavān jīva.* The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is not for the wretched, unfortunate class of men. No. It is meant for the most fortunate man. Anyone who has taken to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, he is to be considered as the most fortunate man because he has got the line of action how his life will be perfect.
> Therefore in the previous verse she said, *alakṣyaṁ sarva-bhūtānām antar bahir avasthitam : "You are not seen by ordinary men, although You are inside and outside." In another verse also, *na lakṣyase mūḍha-dṛśā : "Fools and rascals cannot see You." That means Kuntī sees Him. Unless she sees Kṛṣṇa as He is, how she can say, *mūḍha-dṛśā na lakṣyase*? And [s]he says, *prakṛteḥ param:* "You are transcendental to this material creation."
---
**[1974: Bhagavad-gītā 4.23](spoken/1974/740412bg.bom)**
> That will be awarded to you by superior judgment, that "This man has done like this; he should get a body like this." That is not in your hand. That is not in your science. The real science is how to stop this business. That is being advised in *Bhagavad-gītā. Janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi-duḥkha-doṣānudarśanam*. Tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma*. People do not understand this, that our real problem is not become promoted to the higher position, but to stop this birth, death, old age and disease. That is real problem. So Kṛṣṇa says that *gata-saṅgasya.*
> Gata-saṅgasya.* Because we are getting different types of body in different planets and different spheres of life on account of our association with modes of nature, therefore Kṛṣṇa is advising, *gata-saṅgasya:* "Don't associate with the modes of material nature. That is your business." Not that "You associate with the higher modes of nature." Even very good man, goodness, *brāhmaṇa,* that is also conditioned life. To become *brāhmaṇa—satya śamo damas titikṣā ārjava, jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam*, very perfect way of life, but that is also risky. Not that... Everything is risky, because at any moment we can be associated with another quality. And *kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo 'sya*.* It is very difficult position, mixture.
---
**[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740412mw.bom)**
> What is the use of spiritual advancement? Spiritual advancement means these material things given up. That is spiritual advancement. That is... The example is given, *bhaktiḥ pareṣānubhavoḥ viraktir anyatra syāt.* As soon as one develops real *bhakti,* he will be averse to all these material things. That is the first sign. "No more these things." *Bhaktiḥ pareṣānubhavo viraktir anyatra syāt*. Just like if you are hungry and if you are given some food, if you are satisfied, then the same food will be denied by you: "No, no, no. I don't want any more." Full satisfaction. Just like Dhruva Mahārāja said, *svāmin kṛtārtho 'smi varaṁ na yāce*.
> That I see amongst these Europeans and American boys and girls. They have seen it, that "It is better than our so-called material life." Therefore they have been able to give up. Just like this boy Girirāja, he is very rich man's son. His father gave him a special car. His father is a big lawyer in Chicago. So he gave up everything. Now he is begging daily, although he is earning at least fifty thousand rupees per month. But he has no... He is just like beggar. He doesn't care for his father. There are many like this. *Bhaktiḥ pareṣānubhavo viraktir anyatra syāt*. These are the test.

**[1975: Conversation with Indian Guests](spoken/1975/750412r1.hyd)**
> What is the use of preaching adulterated things? Everyone wants that appeals as it is. Therefore we present *Bhagavad-gītā* as it is. Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad yājī māṁ namaskuru*. We are preaching the same thing—"Always think of Kṛṣṇa. Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. You remember Kṛṣṇa always." This is the simplest process. You see all these young boys, they are chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. And they are becoming purified from the mode of our life. And these *svāmīs and yogīs* preached so many years, not a single person was purified. They were drinking; they were having sex. How they can be purified? And in India even, these things are going on, the land of *Bhagavad-gītā,* the land of Kṛṣṇa. If you want to read *Bhagavad-gītā,* you take it. You follow it. Then everything will be done. *Kṣipraṁ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvac-chāntiṁ nigacchati*.
> That, nobody's interested. Everyone is doing all sorts of sinful activities. And Kṛṣṇa says, *yeṣāṁ tu anta-gataṁ pāpam—h*e can understand Kṛṣṇa. But nobody is prepared to give up sinful activities. And how he'll understand Kṛṣṇa? Kṛṣṇa is not very easy to be understood. *Manuṣyāṇāṁ sahasreṣu kaścid yatati siddhaye*. One who is *siddha,* perfect, *yatatām api siddhānām...*. Out of many millions of *siddhas,* one can understand Kṛṣṇa. This is... These things are explained in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* But nobody cares for that. He lives in his own way, and he has become a big authority, that's all. This rascaldom is going on. Only these few European and American boys, they have taken my words seriously. And therefore, with their help, Kṛṣṇa consciousness is moving. Otherwise, where is Indian? You are young men. If I say, "You come and join us," you won't do it. But they have done it.
---
**[1975: Room Conversation](spoken/1975/750412r2.hyd)**
> Kṛṣṇa never said that "One who offers Me with Sanskrit *mantra." Yo me bhaktyā prayacchati.* Real thing is *bhakti,* feeling: "How to serve Kṛṣṇa? How to please Him?" That is wanted. Not to see that you are a very good scholar in speaking in Sanskrit or English or... That is not... Always feel that "I am worthless, but I have been, by the grace of my Guru Mahārāja, I have been given the chance. So kindly accept whatever little service I can give. I am offensive. So kindly excuse me." In this way be humble, meek, and offer your feeling, and Kṛṣṇa will be satisfied. Not that you have to show how you can speak in Sanskrit language.
> "Whomever you meet, you just try to impress upon him about the instruction of Kṛṣṇa." *Sarva-dharmān parityaja...* So in this way, if we take it up, very seriously—"This is my duty"—then you are a *sannyāsī.* That's all. *Sa sannyāsī.* Kṛṣṇa certifies, *sa sannyāsī.* People are not taking seriously about Kṛṣṇa's teaching. That is India's misfortune. They're bringing so many competition of Kṛṣṇa. "Is Kṛṣṇa..." And "Kṛṣṇa... Rāmakrishna is as good as Kṛṣṇa." This rascaldom has killed. They have done the greatest disservice.
---
**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.2](spoken/1975/750412sb.hyd)**
> That is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* Kṛṣṇa says personally that *imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam*. This *yoga* system is *avyaya,* eternal. Kṛṣṇa is eternal, and Kṛṣṇa's words are eternal, and you are also eternal. This is our position. Kṛṣṇa is eternal, and we are part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. Therefore we are eternal. *Na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre*, Kṛṣṇa says. you are never born, never die. Kṛṣṇa also, *nityo nityānām.* We are all *nityas,* eternal, but He's the supreme *nitya, nityo nityānām.* We are plural *nitya;* He is singular *nitya.* So what is the difference between this plural and singular? The singular maintains all these plural, *eko yo bahūnāṁ vidadhāti kāmān* [*Kaṭha Upaniṣad* 2.2.13]. He is the maintainer and we are maintained.
> So everything is mentioned in the *Bhagavad-gītā,* and that is the essence of all Vedic literature. Our propaganda is that you read *Bhagavad-gītā,* try to understand *Bhagavad-gītā* as it is, without any foolish commentary. As soon as you comment, that is foolishness. Don't do it. Read as it is. Then you'll get the enlightenment and you'll understand Kṛṣṇa, because Kṛṣṇa is teaching to make you understand what is God, what is Kṛṣṇa. Why should we deviate? Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, "Learn *Bhagavad-gītā,* the same instruction, *mahat-sevā.*" *Sevā.* Kṛṣṇa says, *tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā*. Unless you are prepared to render service to your spiritual master... First of all you must find out the proper spiritual master. Then you must engage yourself to his service. Then you can question. Otherwise don't waste your time and your spiritual master's time. *Tad viddhi,* you must know.

**[1976: Morning Walk](spoken/1976/760412mw.bom)**
> Bengali poetry, *kṛṣṇa-bhuliā jīva bhoga vāñchā kare, pāsete māyā tāre jāpaṭiyā dhare* [*Prema-vivarta 6.2].* As soon as the living entity desires sense gratification, immediately *māyā* captures.
> > goloka-nāmni nija-dhāmni tale ca tasya
> > devī-maheśa-hari-dhāmasu teṣu teṣu
> > te te prabhāva-nicayā vihitāś ca yena
> > govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ
> > [Bs. 5.43]

**[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.12.1](spoken/1976/760412sb.bom)**
> Therefore *brahmacārī* means living under direction of *guru, guror hitam.* And *guror hitam:* how he can be simply thinking of benefiting the spiritual master. Unless that position comes, nobody can serve *guru*. It is not an artificial thing. The *brahmacārī,* the disciple, must have genuine love for *guru.* Then he can be under his control. Otherwise why one should be under the control of another person? Therefore it is said, *ācaran dāsavat. Dāsa. Dāsa* means servant. Not only servant, but menial servant. Menial servant means just like the sweeper, the cobbler, like that. They are called menial servant. So in India there is system. The sweeper class is different, the cobbler class is different, and domestic servant is different, and the barber, he is also servant, different. The washerman, he is also servant. So *nīca* means just like the washerman or the barber or the cobbler. They are less than the domestic servant at home. They are *śūdras,* and they are considered less than the *śūdras, pañcamā.* So a disciple is expected to live in *gurukula* or—*gurukula* means at the shelter of *guru—nīcavat,* menial servant. Menial servant. *Nīcavat. Ācaran dāsavan nīco gurau sudṛdha sauhṛdaḥ . This can be possible when one is very thickly related with the *guru*. Otherwise, ordinary relationship will not do. One who has got actually the conviction, *yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo....* One who is convinced that "If I can please my *guru*, then Kṛṣṇa will be pleased." This is called *sudṛdha,* full faith. *Yasya prasādān na gatiḥ kuto 'pi.* "And if I displease my *guru*, then I have no place." In this way... Of course, *guru* cannot be a false *guru*. False *guru* has no such thing. If one *guru* is genuine and the disciple is genuine, then both of them are benefited, and they go back to home, back to Godhead.
> So we cannot avoid in our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. That was the problem from the very beginning. In India there is restriction between men and women, free intermingling, but in your country there is no such restriction. Therefore I got my disciples married. They criticize me that I have become a marriage-maker. Anyway, I wanted at least to regulate. That is required. *Dharmāviruddhaḥ kāmo 'smi*. Kṛṣṇa also says. Now, a married man also can be *brahmacārī.* If a married man stick to one wife, and before sex, if he takes permission from his spiritual master, then he is *brahmacārī.* Not whimsically. When the spiritual master orders him that "Now you can beget a child," then he is *brahmacārī.* Śrīla Vīrarāghavācārya, he has described in his comment that there are two kinds of *brahmacārī.* One *brahmacārī* is *naiṣṭhik-brahmacārī;* he doesn't marry. And another *brahmacārī* is... Although he marries, he is fully under control of the spiritual master, even for sex. That is... He is also *brahmacārī.*
