*Lectures from this day: 10 recordings*

**[1969: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.1.1–4](spoken/1969/690410sb.ny)**
> So the living entity is wandering in this way, *vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni*. Just like we change our dress from one dress to another, similarly, we are changing different positions by the influence of *māyā. Māyā* is forcing me. *Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi*. As soon as I am desiring something, immediately my body is formed. Immediately a particular type of body begins to form, and as soon as I am mature to change, my next body I get according to my desire. Therefore we should always desire Kṛṣṇa. Then from this life, the Kṛṣṇa-approaching body, or the spiritual body, will be formed.
> When one is sincere, then Kṛṣṇa is sitting within everyone. As soon as He sees that "Here is a sincere soul. He's seeking after Me," so He manifests Himself out externally as spiritual master. The spiritual master is therefore representative of Kṛṣṇa. *Guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja* [*Cc *Madhya19.151]. Two things. Without being representative of Kṛṣṇa, nobody can become spiritual master. *Kṛṣṇa-śakti vinā nahe tāra pravartana* [*Antya* 7.11] Without being empowered by Kṛṣṇa, nobody can preach, nobody can become a spiritual master.

**[1971: Paṇḍāl Lecture](spoken/1971/710410le.bom)**
> Aham:* "I am." The Māyāvādī philosophers cannot accommodate this idea, how a person can be the cause of creation, maintenance and annihilation. But Kṛṣṇa here says that *ahaṁ kṛtsnasya. Ahaṁ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayas tathā.* Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya*,* because He is the origin of all energies.
> Therefore unless one has got very fine brain, he cannot understand Kṛṣṇa. Gross brain cannot understand. In order to make our brain and senses very purified and fine, we have to take to devotional service. *Sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṁ tat-paratvena nirmalam*. That fine brain and purified senses can be achieved. Just like you can get relief from diseased condition of life, similarly, the brain is already there; it will become finer, it will become subtler to understand Kṛṣṇa when we are able to give up our all material designations.

**[1973: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.8.18](spoken/1973/730410sb.ny)**
> Therefore Kṛṣṇa, when He is *prakṛteḥ param,* He is beyond this material nature. His body, His activities, His pastimes, His name, His form, everything, it is not material. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā, janma karma me divyaṁ yo jānāti tattvataḥ*. If anyone simply tries to understand Kṛṣṇa as He is in truth, then he becomes liberated, simply by understanding Kṛṣṇa. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. You try to understand Kṛṣṇa not by speculation, but as Kṛṣṇa says, as God says, or a Kṛṣṇa devotee says. Just like Kuntī. Kuntī is a devotee of Kṛṣṇa. She says that "You are *prakṛteḥ param.*" She is authority. She is authority, because devotee, every devotee, pure devotee, they are confidential. Otherwise how Kṛṣṇa has accepted to become her nephew? Just like Kṛṣṇa has accepted to become the son of Yaśodāmāyi or Devakī, similarly, He has accepted to become a nephew of Kuntīdevī.
> So this philosophy, Gauḍīya-Vaiṣṇava philosophy, is very sublime, to accept God as subordinate. Kṛṣṇa says in *Caitanya-caritāmṛta,* you will find, that "Everyone worships Me with awe and veneration. But if anyone worships Me without any awe, veneration, and treats Me as insignificant, I like that." [laughter] "I like that." So that exchange of Kṛṣṇa's feelings you can find in this Gauḍīya-Vaiṣṇava philosophy, that Mother Yaśodā is treating Kṛṣṇa as very insignificant. "He is my child. If I don't give Him protection, He will die." Therefore Kṛṣṇa is very much obliged to Mother Yaśodā. Yes. But nobody... Everyone comes to God, "Oh, God is so exalted and..." That He is hearing throughout. But when the Mother Yaśodā comes and chastises Him, He likes it very much. Yes, yes, likes it very much.

**[1974: Bhagavad-gītā 4.21](spoken/1974/740410bg.bom)**
> Prasidhyati* means you increase. What is that? *Utsāha,* endeavor. "In this life I must fulfill my mission of Kṛṣṇa consciousness." That is called *utsāha. Dhairya.* Don't be agitated because it is not giving result immediately. Just patiently go on working. *Utsāhād dhairyān niścayāt. Niścayāt* means to have full faith in the words of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa says, *kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati*. This is called full faith, that "Kṛṣṇa has said that if I am in devotional service, I will never be lost. Kṛṣṇa will give me protection." Kṛṣṇa says. *Ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi*.
> Real life is that you keep your health nicely, save time, take ordinary very nutritious food within the jurisdiction of *kṛṣṇa-prasāda.* Kṛṣṇa says, *patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati*.* So Kṛṣṇa eats all these things. *Patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyam:* vegetable, liquid things, water, milk, and so many other things, grains. So you offer to Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is here. Kṛṣṇa, although He is very *virāṭa,* universal form, but Kṛṣṇa has accepted *arcā-vigraha* so that you can serve, you can see, you can touch, and your life becomes successful. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.

**[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740410mw.bom)**
> Suppose in the court a big man has done something criminal, and the judgment is that he should be punished. So can you accuse the court, "Oh, such a big man?" Just like... For the time... let us understand. Mahatma Gandhi was put to jail in so many times. So nobody could say, because according to law there was civil disobedience. So if the law puts you in the jail, so can you protest against that? Then you will be also put into jail, contempt of court. Although everyone respects Mahatma Gandhi, but why he was put into jail? According to law. It may be it is man-made law, it is wrong, but the principle is that whatever is judgment of the *śāstra,* we have to take. It doesn't matter who is that man and how great he is. That is... *Yaḥ śāstra-vidhim utsṛjya vartate kāma-kārataḥ, na siddhim sa...*. The *śāstra* is given stress always. So you cannot go beyond the verdict of the *śāstra.* That is the injunction. [break]...about Guru Nanak's statement that...
> *Kṛṣi-go-rakṣya-vāṇijyam vaiśya-karma svabhāva-jam*. So where is that *vaiśya,* giving protection to the cows? Although they were village men, they were very rich. That is the old Vedic civilization. Now you go to the village—all poor. The cows are skinny, people have no home, no nice cloth. This is the position. And we are still advanced, advanced. They are proud of "advanced." And here is the... Just hear the description of the village, with cows only. So how much fallen we have become, we can just imagine.

**[1975: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.1](spoken/1975/750410sb.hyd)**
> So here *tapasya* is advised not for some material profit but for transcendental realization. Then what will be the result? Now, *śuddhyed sattvaṁ.* This existence... At the present moment my existence, this bodily existence, is not pure. If it is pure, then why shall I be subjected to birth, death and old age? Because it is not pure. The so-called scientists, philosophers, they do not know. They say death is..., it is inevitable; we cannot avoid it. No. Death is..., can be avoided. That is called *tapasya.* That is called purification. Just like Kṛṣṇa says, *tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti*. *Tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti*. After giving up this body, Kṛṣṇa assures; then you don't get another material body. Where is that science? They do not know whether we are going to accept another body. That's a fact, but they do not know it. Big, big scientist, big, big professors, they do not know it. They think that this life is the end, and after, there is nothing—zero. *Śūnyavādi. Nirviśeṣa-śūnyavādi.*
> Therefore long, long ago, about some millions and millions of years ago, this knowledge was imparted by Ṛṣabhadeva to His sons: "My dear boys, you have got this human form of life, especially the body received from Me—I am king in royal family—so don't spoil it." *Nāyaṁ deho deha-bhājāṁ nṛloke.* How to spoil it? *Kaṣṭān kāmān,* simply for sense gratification. Working very hard like an ass is not human form of life. Human form of life should be utilized to become very sober, cool-headed, and to understand what is God, what is my life. This is the necessity. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says in the *Bhagavad-gītā*,

**[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.55](spoken/1976/760410sb.vrn)**
> If one is pure devotee, then he has all the good qualities. Just like Prahlāda Mahārāja was addressed, *prahlāda bhadra bhadraṁ te*. Bhadra,* a gentleman. Who can be more gentleman than the devotees? The devotees are thinking, "How these rascals will be happy?" Prahlāda Mahārāja, *śoce tato vimukha-cetasa māyā-sukhāya bharam udvahato vimūḍhān* : "My Lord, I am thinking that these rascals, simply for flimsy happiness, temporary happiness, they are making so gorgeous arrangement." Big, big road, big, big building, big, big car, congested. If you want to go one mile it will take two hours. *Māyā-sukhāya.* We have seen in your country. You'll go two miles in a car in three hours. So what is the use of this car? In London I have seen. I was going. It was about two miles, and it was so congested that it took two hours. Paris is always congested. So in India also they are becoming like that. So this is *māyā-sukhāya.* They are thinking that "Getting a car, we shall be very, very happy," but there is no place to drive car. [laughter] Therefore it is called *māyā-sukhāya.* And for manufacturing this car there are three thousand parts. So many factories are going on for manufacturing. Who was telling me that within a few minutes a car is prepared in the Ford's factory? Somebody was telling. They bring the different parts of the car and mix and assemble them within half an hour. That means each half hour they are manufacturing car.
> So anything which can be used for Kṛṣṇa's service, that is not material; that is spiritual. So we must use it. But not for sense gratification. Therefore we have to use and work exactly under the direction of spiritual master. Otherwise it will be sense gratification. Don't manufacture. *Guru-mukha padma-vākya, cittete kariyā aikya, āra na kariha mane āśa.* [*Śrī Prema-bhakti-candrikā*, 1.2] If you want to be guided, then take in every step the words of *guru.* Manufacturing will not help you. Prahlāda Mahārāja became so great because he was initiated by Nārada Muni. That is required. *Chāḍiyā vaiṣṇava-sevā nistāra peyeche kebā* [*Prārthanā*]. Nobody can become perfect without serving the bona fide spiritual master. That is the motto. So *evaṁ pralobhyamāno 'pi varair loka-pralobhanaiḥ.* So much attractive... Now, if somebody says, or Kṛṣṇa says, that "I'll give you immediately five *lakhs* of rupees and one beautiful girl also. You give up this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement," how many will be restrained? That is very difficult. But our boys have been tested. They are not after money, most of them, or women. But generally... Therefore it is said, *loka-pralobhanaiḥ.* In this material world everyone is after money and woman. Money and women. That is called *viṣaya. Viṣaya.*

**[1977: Room Conversation about Harijanas](spoken/1977/770410r2.bom)**
> In '68 I was alone. And I had to struggle very, very hard, alone. Therefore I got heart attack in 1967. Then that heart attack and regress continued for two years. Whatever is done, it is done from 1969. Before that, I was simply alone struggling to start this mission.
> "The story of the vast quantity of *harijanas* in this ancient and illustrious land is a miserable story of shame and sorrow. Harassment and humiliation, oppression and separation, poverty and pity. The *harijana* problems is not merely a social or religious or economic or political one. It is a complex problem involving many factors. It is, however, the most baffling national problem, posing a great challenge to the leaders, rulers and people of India."

**[1967: Letter to San Francisco Devotees](letters/1967/670410_san_francisco_devotees)**
> Please accept my hearty greetings and blessings. I am so much obliged to you for your devotion and affection for me. I thought of you all throughout my journey from Francisco to New York and I was praying to Lord Krishna for your more and more advancement in Krishna Consciousness. On my arrival here I was received by hundreds of devotees and friends although Mr. Ginsberg was out of the town. One young professor from India first greeted me and told me that Swamiji you are doing here real work whereas others who have come from India, have simply formed some groups of old lady students without any real information of Indian original culture. Any way the reception in New York was very good organized by our students here and there was distribution of varieties of Prasadam to about 100 men in the temple. I was not least tired and after landing from the air ship although there was some blockade in my ear still I continued meeting for three hours. I am now very well although I am feeling your great separation. Please continue Kirtana as usual with devotion and you will make more and more advancement in Krishna consciousness. Hope you are all well and I beg to remain.
