The brahminical qualifications is described in the *Bhagavad-gītā: satyam śauca śama dama titikṣa ārjavam, jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam* [[bg/18/42|[Bg. 18.42] ]]. Those who are actually *brāhmaṇas,* they must be truthful, always clean, inside and outside. Truthful, clean, and controlling the senses, *śama dama,* controlling the mind, controlling the senses, controlling the mind; *śama dama titikṣa,* tolerance, *titikṣa,* tolerance; *ārjavam,* simplicity; and *jñānam,* must be profoundly wise; *vijñānam,* practical application in life; *jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyam,* full faith in scriptures and in God, or Kṛṣṇa, *āstikyam. Even though we have got these eyes, we cannot see; we require light. For a moment there was no electric light—you immediately became blind. That is our position. We are very much proud of our eyes. We see..., we say, "Can you show me God?" There are so many questions. But what is your eyes? Your eyes, if there is no light, electricity, you cannot see. And you want to see God with these eyes, these imperfect eyes? But they say, "Can you show me God?" So the answer is, "Can you see God?" You have to make the eyes *naṣṭa-dṛśām*. Our eyes, our senses, are so imperfect, it is not possible to understand Kṛṣṇa. *Ataḥ kṛṣṇa-nāmādi na bhaved grāhyam indriyaiḥ* [[cc/madhya/17/136|[Cc. Madhya 17.136] ]]. So you have to rectify your faulty senses—eyes, hands, everything. Then you can understand Kṛṣṇa. That is stated here: *kalau naṣṭa-dṛśām*. In this age, *kalau*... This is called Kali, Age of Kali—fighting. Quarrel means disagreement and fight, *kalau. Kalau naṣṭa-dṛśām eṣa purāṇārko 'dhunoditaḥ* [[sb/1/3/43|[SB. 1.3.43] ]]. This *Purāna*, this *Bhagavata*-*Purāna*, is just like sunshine, or sun: *adhunoditaḥ*. So we should take advantage of this sunshine, Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa's..., what is called, *śabdha* incarnation. This *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam*... Kṛṣṇa has many incarnations. Just like here, we are worshiping the Deity, this is called *arcā-avatāra.* Similarly, this *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* is sound *avatāra*. Kṛṣṇa can appear as *avatāra* in anything, because this sound means from sky, and this *arcā* is from stone. Kṛṣṇa claims, *bhūmir āpo analo vāyuḥ khaṁ buddhir* [[bg/7/4|[Bg. 7.4] ]]. *Khaṁ* means *ākāśāḥ*. From the *ākāśāḥ*, from the sky, there is *śabdha,* sound vibration. That is the symptom that existence of *ākāśāḥ*. And this *arcā-mūrti*, that is also made of stone, but Kṛṣṇa..., the stone is nothing but energy of Kṛṣṇa; the sound is energy of Kṛṣṇa. So as the sunshine is energy of the sun... When there is sunshine, the energy of the sun, you can understand the sun is there. Similarly, from anything, if you have got realization, you can understand Kṛṣṇa—energy. So this is, this *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* is sound vibration incarnation of Kṛṣṇa: *apurna,* *purāṇārko adhunoditaḥ*. --- **[[spoken/740324bg.bom|Bg 4.4 — March 24, 1974, Bombay]]** **Girirāja:** [makes announcement] Would all devotees please move forward as much as possible so our friends who are outside... This is... Different parts of our senses should be utilized. The first business is to fix up the mind at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa. Then engage the tongue in describing the activities of Kṛṣṇa. Therefore Kṛṣṇa has acted in so many ways so that we can remember the history of the activities of Kṛṣṇa and describe it. *Vacāṁsi vaikuṇṭha-guṇānuvarṇane.* Then the legs should be used for going to the temple. Hands should be used for cleansing the temple. Nose should be used for smelling the flowers offered to Kṛṣṇa. Ears should be used for hearing about Kṛṣṇa. In this way if we engage our senses in different activities relating to Kṛṣṇa, that is success of life. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness, *vacāṁsi vaikuṇṭha-guṇānuvarṇane.* [Hindi] So now you can talk. [laughs] [laughter] Hare Kṛṣṇa. [Hindi] [break] ...practical purposes. This land and that water is matter, but we are walking on the land. Can you walk on the water? **Prabhupāda:** ...in the body, so we have to behave duality. [laughter] You cannot say oneness. When you are liberated from the body, that is another thing. For practical purposes... This philosophy was discussed by the mother of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu when He was a child. This philosophy. Caitanya Mahāprabhu was given very nice sweetmeats to eat. So instead of eating the sweetmeat, He was eating the dirt. So mother said, "My dear child, why You are eating dirt? I have given You *sandeśa.*" "Mother, what is the difference between this dirt and *sandeśa?* It is all Brahman." You see? So His mother said, "My dear child, You are all right. Just like this is earth, and there is earthen pot. So if you want to keep water, you cannot throw the water on the ground. You have to take the earthen pot." So this philosophy of oneness and difference was already discussed when Caitanya Mahāprabhu was a child. Simultaneously one and different. Yes. Earthen pot and earth, actually, from the material point of view, they're the same thing. But if you want to keep water you cannot keep it on the ground. You have to take to the jug.* [Hindi] [break] --- **[[spoken/760324r1.cal|Talk at Rādhā-Govinda Mandir — March 24, 1976, Calcutta]]** **Prabhupāda:**[Transl.I will in Engli...No, it's little difficult for them.]This Rādhā-Govinda Deity is very old Deity of the Mullik family. I think his father's name was Gaura Mohan Mullik. Am I right? **Prabhupāda:** Citrā Dāsī. No. No, Kashinath Mullik's father? So gradually this whole quarters belonged to this Mullik family. Still in front of this temple there is Bāgān [garden] building. That is also the property of Rādhā-Govinda. And as I have shown in coming, our house was just behind the present Govinda Bhavan. And we had the opportunity of seeing this Rādhā-Govinda from very childhood. When I was three or four years old I used to visit this Rādhā-Govinda daily. **Prabhupāda:** And that is the inspiration of my devotional life. Then I asked my father that "Give me Rādhā-Govinda Deity; I shall worship." So my father was also Vaiṣṇava. He gave me small Rādhā-Govinda Deity. I was worshiping in my house. Whatever I was eating, I was offering, and I was following the ceremonies of this Rādhā-Govinda with my small Deity. That Deity is still existing. I have given to my sister. So then I introduced Ratha-yātrā. So I... My Ratha-yātrā was being performed very gloriously. My father used to spend money. In those days ten rupees, twenty rupees was sufficient. I hired one *kīrtana* party, and a small friends, they..., I think the brother of the present generation, and there was another De family here, so we performed this Ratha-yātrā ceremony. So on behalf of our spiritual master, *jagat-guru* Śrīla Prabhupāda, we take this opportunity to welcome all of you, very cordially, to this Third International Bombay *paṇḍāl*, in order to push forward the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement in this city of Bombay, which is one of the world's important cities. So, as you have been hearing from our spiritual master, through his books and his disciples, the actual purpose of human life is to understand God. As it has been quoted from the *Vedānta-sūtra*, *athāto brahma-jijñāsā:* the human form of..."Now you should try to understand what is Brahman." In other words, we can understand that externally we are covered by a particular body, material body, either Indian body or American body, German body, English body or Christian or Hindu body, or even animal body. Of course, the animals cannot understand, but at least we can understand that I have accepted a particular body due to my previous activities.
