# March 19 ## Spoken on March 19 *Lectures from this day: 8 recordings* --- **[1969: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.8–11](spoken/1969/690319sb.haw)** > If you see the representative of Kṛṣṇa, that means you are seeing Kṛṣṇa. Because you have to see Kṛṣṇa through that representative; otherwise there is no seeing Kṛṣṇa. He is the transparent via media. Everyone has no idea what is Kṛṣṇa. And because the representative of Kṛṣṇa induces one to see Kṛṣṇa and gives his knowledge and intelligence and tactics how to see Kṛṣṇa, therefore he is as good as Kṛṣṇa. That is the verdict of all *śāstras*. *Sākṣād-dharitvena samasta-śāstrair. Samasta* means "all," and *śāstra* means "scripture." > As soon as one becomes Kṛṣṇa consciousness, all these good qualities will develop in him. Therefore the very good example, that *tac cātmane prati-mukhasya yathā mukha-śrīḥ. Mukha-śrīḥ*, the beauty of the face after decoration, the face cannot see immediately. But it is reflected; it can be seen in the reflection. So if people accept this philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, then the reflection—the world is the reflection; this material world is the reflection of the spiritual world—everything will be satisfactory, everything will be peaceful, everything will be glorious. --- **[1971: Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 7.7.22–25](spoken/1971/710319sb.bom)** > The controller, the individual soul controller, *īśvaraḥ, īśvaraḥ* means. [indistinct] *īśvaraḥ* that I have explained several times because you are controlling our bodily actions. Just as I am sitting here but if I like I can go from here. So I am controlling the bodily actions, walking. So I am *īśvaraḥ* and I am in control but why I am willing to. Not to sit down here but go away. That is being controlled by Supersoul. Simply my willing will not do. Just like if I am willing that let this finger work but if Kṛṣṇa does not like then your finger is paralysed you cannot work. Therefore you are not supreme controller. You want to control, you want to act something with your finger but if Kṛṣṇa does not like then you cannot. Although you may claim that it is my finger I can use it as I like. But if Kṛṣṇa does not like then you cannot use. Therefore the Supersoul is also there. That is explained by Kṛṣṇa in the *Bhagavad-gītā*; *sarvasya cāhaṁhṛdi sanniviṣṭo*. > It is *Bhāgavata* it is said that, "Before the creation I was there. In the creation I am there and when the creation will annihilated, still I am there," *prakṛtiṁ yānti māmikām*. Therefore Śaṅkarācārya also says, *nārāyaṇaḥ para avyaktāt*. "The creation takes place from the *avyaktāt* non-manifested, total material energy. But Kṛṣṇa is transcendental above this material created energy. He is the director of this energy." That is also stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā*, *mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sa-carācaram*. --- **[1972: Pandal Lecture](spoken/1972/720319le.bom)** > Because these are..., all these qualities are different modes of material nature, which is called *māyā*. So we are now compact in the association of *māyā*, in different qualities, and Kṛṣṇa says that *mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te*. If you actually want to revive your own consciousness, original consciousness, then you have to surrender. That is being explained by Vyāsadeva here, *satyaṁ paraṁ dhīmahi*. He says, *satyaṁ paraṁ dhīmahi*. *Dhīmahi* is *gāyatrī-mantra: oṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ tat savitur vareṇyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi.* > Therefore Vyāsadeva says that the original person, or the Absolute Truth, must be conscious, *anvayād* [indistinct]. Directly and indirectly He knows everything. In the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is also said, *vedāhaṁ samatītāni* : Kṛṣṇa knows everything, past, present and future. That is also explained in the Fourth Chapter of *Bhagavad-gītā*, when Kṛṣṇa said that "Long, long ago I spoke this philosophy of *Bhagavad-gītā* to the sun-god.'' *Vivasvān manave prāha, imaṁ ivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam*. "This version of *Bhagavad-gītā*, *avyayam*, inexhaustible knowledge, was first spoken by Me to the sun-god." --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.1.4](spoken/1974/740319sb.vrn)** > The real business is that we have to withdraw our attraction for this material... That they do not know. I am a spirit soul. Being attracted by this material nature, I am now encaged within this body, and I am changing this body. Just like I am changing this body from boyhood to childhood, childhood to..., from childhood to boyhood, from youthhood. In this way, I have been entangled in this transmigration of the soul. This is my problem. Bhagavān, Kṛṣṇa, says, "The real problem is *janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi*." > This is not problem. Nowadays they have discovered so many problems. But actual problem—*janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi*—they are not very much serious. Therefore they have been described here as *pramattaḥ,* madmen. He does not know what is the real problem, but he is very busy with the superficial problems. Therefore *śāstra* says that these people, blind, they do not know what is the problem. *Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum*. My real self-interest is to go back to home, back to Godhead. That is my real self-interest. They do not know. They want to live here, which is described as *duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam*, simply a place of miserable condition and repetition of birth, death, old age and disease. --- **[1976: Morning Walk](spoken/1976/760319mw.may)** > "Go to *guru* and hear from him." That is Vedic civilization. "Don't talk, rascal." This is Vedic civilization. And Vedic civilization begins, Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*. This is Vedic civilization: "Don't talk, rascal. Just..., just carry out what I say." This is Vedic civilization. >recommended that "If there is no need, don't take even cloth. Remain naked." That is *sannyāsa.* But because we have to preach, we have to go the people, therefore some covering. Otherwise, this is also not necessary for a *sannyāsī.* Nothing. Lie down on the floor like the Śukadeva Gosvāmī said, and take water in your palm; no dress. Śukadeva was also not dressing—naked. That is the perfection of *sannyāsa.* --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.41](spoken/1976/760319sb.may)** > So we do not understand this. This is called ignorance, foolishness. Prahlāda Mahārāja, Vaiṣṇava, he understands this, that "I am fallen in this miserable condition," *evaṁ sva-karma-patitam,* "by my own activities. Not only I; everyone in this material..." That we should know. Don't think that "He's suffering. I am enjoying." I am also suffering. If I am not suffering now, I will have to suffer. Suffering must be there. This world is meant for suffering. *Duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam*, Kṛṣṇa says. > So this is not God's creation. We should know that it is my creation. Therefore Prahlāda Mahārāja said, *evaṁ sva-karma-patitam.* Just like a man is condemned to death. In the court the judge gives the judgment that "This murderer should be hanged." So it is not the judge that he is giving order to the murderer to be hanged. It is the murderer who has created his situation to be hanged. This is to be understood. Not that the judge is partial, he's giving order to somebody that he must get decree for two millions of dollars, "He must have it," and another man is condemned to death. It is not that the judge is partial, he's giving somebody two millions of dollars and somebody is ordered to be hanged. The judge is impartial. *Ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tams...*. Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa*. --- ## Letters on March 19 *Letters from this day: 14* --- **[1969: Letter to Brahmanandaa](letters/1969/690319_brahmanandaa)** > Shortly before his tragic and recent death Father Merton asked us to assign copyright for his “appreciation” to him in order to clear the way for a possible and future edition of his uniform collected works and essays. --- **[1969: Letter to Brahmanandab](letters/1969/690319_brahmanandab)** > The application which you have sent for filling up appears to be little puzzling for me.
