# March 15 *Lectures from this day: 11 recordings* --- ## [1967: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.7.29–31 [Partial Recording](spoken/1967/670315sb.sf)] > One has to hear from the superior, not to manufacture. One must hear. Because the subject matter is transcendental, beyond our senses. Simply the same example: if you want to know something about India, and because I have come from India, you can ask me, "What is the Indian condition?" I can present perfectly. But you cannot imagine. Or you have to read some books of India. So this is the process of knowledge. So in the *Bhagavad-gītā* also it is stated, *evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ*. > If you follow the footprints of great personalities like Arjuna, like Nārada, like Brahmā, like Śaṅkarācārya, like Rāmānujācārya, oh, they are there. Their precepts and their injunction is there. But you have to select a person, a bona fide spiritual master. You have to see that whether he's actually in that disciplic succession. And how you can test it? You'll test it that a bona fide spiritual master will instruct you the same thing as Kṛṣṇa instructed. How it is that? That Kṛṣṇa said that *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja* : --- **[1968: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.6.1](spoken/1968/680315sb.sf)** > So he says that "From very childhood..." Actually this is essential. From childhood, in the schools, in the colleges, this *bhāgavata-dharma,* or the occupation of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, should be introduced. This is necessary, but they do not understand. They think that this spot life is all, and this body is all, and there is no other life. Next life, they do not believe it. This is all due to ignorance. Life is eternity, and this spot life is preparation for the next life. > So he was agitating in the school amongst his class fellows to become Kṛṣṇa conscious. So he's preaching. Just in the tiffin hour, in the recess hour, as soon as the teacher's gone, he took the opportunity and stood up on the bench and began to agitate his friends, "My dear friends," *kaumāra ācaret prājñā*, "Now we should become Kṛṣṇa conscious from this childhood. Don't wait for your old age." Generally, people think that "When we shall become old, we shall take care of becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious or God conscious or go to the church or temple. At present, let us play and enjoy life." --- **[1969: Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Prabhu Bhajan](spoken/1969/690315bj.haw)** > [sings:] > śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu doyā koro more > tomā binā ke doyālu jagat-saṁsāre > patita-pāvana-hetu tava avatāra > mo sama patita prabhu nā pāibe āra > hā hā prabhu nityānanda, premānanda sukhī > kṛpābalokana koro āmi boro duḥkhī > doyā koro sītā-pati adwaita gosāi > tava kṛpā-bale pāi caitanya-nitāi > hā hā swarūp, sanātana, rūpa, raghunātha > bhaṭṭa-juga, śrī-jīva hā prabhu lokanātha > doyā koro śrī-ācārya prabhu śrīnivāsa > rāmacandra-saṅga māge narottama-dāsa [break] [end] --- **[1971: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.6.29](spoken/1971/710315sb.bom)** > Indra says, "So for arresting this woman there is no other purpose, don't think that I shall misbehave with her. No, that's not the point. But she has. She is pregnant." *Āste 'syā jaṭhare vīryam*—"The semena of the demon Hiraṇyakaśipu is there within her womb. *Vīryam aviṣahyaṁ sura-dviṣaḥ*—"And therefore the child which is growing within her womb must be a great enemy of the demigods." *Āsyatāṁ yāvat prasavaṁ*—"Therefore I want to keep under my vigilance. I want to keep her under my vigilance until she gives birth to the child. There is no other purpose. So I want to arrest her." > So his father has gone to Mandarācala Hill for undergoing severe austerities and penances. Hiraṇyakaśipu being defeated, he was not deserted, he left his wife, children, home, wealth. Everything and went to the forest to undergo austerities so that he may get power to kill the demigods. So in this case after severe austerities he got perfection so much so that Lord Brahma himself came to him. "What is your purpose of undergoing such severe austerities?" Then he asked that, "Make me immortal." That was not possible. That is different story. --- **[1974: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 7.8](spoken/1974/740315cc.vrn)** > Kṛṣṇa says, "*Mūḍhas,* rascals, they think that I am a human being, ordinary human being." And therefore they imitate. Sometimes the rascals imitate *rāsa* dance. "Kṛṣṇa had *rāsa* dance; then we can have also *rāsa...*" But they do not understand that Kṛṣṇa's *rāsa* dance is not ordinary ball dance like that. No. It is an imitation, perverted imitation. Because the tendency's there in Kṛṣṇa, therefore we have also got the tendency. But we do not know how to enjoy that dancing spirit. That is our illusion. We think this ordinary dance and Kṛṣṇa's dance is the same thing. No. That dancing, to take part in that dancing, it requires many, many millions of years' *tapasya.* It is not ordinary thing. *Itthaṁ brahma-bhūta...* There is a verse that *kṛta-puṇya-puñjāḥ. Sārdhaṁ vijahruḥ kṛta-puṇya-puñjāḥ*. To join with the *rāsa* dance of Kṛṣṇa, or to play with Kṛṣṇa as cowherd boy, it requires *kṛta-puṇya-puñjāḥ,* many, many millions of births' pious activities. > So one who has got intelligence, they will try to enter into the pastimes, transcendental pastimes of the Lord, either as a cowherd boy or as a servant or as a flower, as a tree, or the water of Yamunā, or the land, or the father and the mother and the conjugal lover. Or it may be as enemy, as Aghāsura, Bakāsura, Pūtanā. They are also blessed, because they are acting with Kṛṣṇa. This is the sum and substance of Vṛndāvana *līlā.* Kṛṣṇa comes, He exhibits His *līlā* in Vṛndāvana to attract the conditioned souls, who are engaged in false *līlā,* temporary *līlā,* or hellish *līlā.* Kṛṣṇa wants to save us. The propensity is there. Kṛṣṇa says, "Not here. Not in this material... This is perverted. You come to Me." But the Māyāvādīs, because they have poor fund of knowledge, they think that "If again there is *līlā,* there is sporting, there is dancing, so that is here. Then it is *māyā.*" In their poor fund of knowledge, brain cannot accommodate that Kṛṣṇa's *līlā* and this *līlā* are not the same. Not the same. They think when there is *līlā,* then it must be *māyā;* therefore they are called Māyāvādī. Their idea is that liberation means minus this *līlā,* no more *līlā,* simply stop everything, or voidism. --- **[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740315mw.vrn)** > Kṛṣṇa also gives guarantee, "Anyone who has taken shelter of My..., he is saved. I will give him protection." Kṛṣṇa says, *ahaṁ tvāṁ mokṣayiṣyāmi sarva...* Everything is there. For Vaiṣṇava there is no suffering, personally. But he is very much anxious, "How these rascals will be happy?" That is his business. "These rascals are misled. They are going astray, unhappy. So how they should be happy?" So that is Vaiṣṇava's business. So the Vaiṣṇava, therefore, will have no politics. Politics means planning for one's own happiness. That is politics. So in our society there should be no diplomacy, no politics. Everyone should be eager how to do good to others. That is Vaiṣṇava. If he's planning something, that "I shall be leader," "I shall be doing something," that is not Vaiṣṇavism. That politics is not good. > There are many *bābājīs,* they are collecting *chapātis* and smoking *bīḍī,* and have one or two women. That's all. It is going on. So they should be drawn: "Come on! Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and take the plow." Not that you become Rūpa Gosvāmī simply by smoking. They are thinking they have become Rūpa Gosvāmī. Rūpa Gosvāmī lived like that. So they think by changing the cloth, loincloth, they have become Rūpa Gosvāmī. And whatever nonsense they like, they can do. [break]...be taken, and all these *bābājīs* should be employed, "Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and draw plow." Then it will be nice. --- **[1974: Room Conversation](spoken/1974/740315r1.vrn)** > Pañcadraviḍa: As far as the men, since I think a lot are even... Some cases they are sending problem cases to India, people they can't manage in the States. I think maybe if you divide, if you actually... Since in the States, you've divided the States into territories, and certain men have certain territories. If you maybe appoint certain people in charge of territories of India and ask them which men they want, then they will tell you who they want, and the rest they can send away or send somewhere else. Then you'll have solid centers, because the men will actually be desired. > Pañcadraviḍa: I went to wake a devotee up. I woke him up at a quarter to four. I said, "Prabhu, you want to get up now? It's four o'clock, time to wake." So he didn't wake, but I..., I went ahead and bathed, because I wanted to do that, and then I come back and it was almost time for *āratik.* So I said, "If you are not going to bathe, at least get out of bed and come to *āratik.* But he wouldn't even do that much. So what can you do under these conditions? When you tell somebody, you can't physically twist their arm. --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750315mw.teh)** > Ātreya Ṛṣ > Well, for taxes and things. But their real reason was they were not happy that he was spending his money to construct a temple. I don't think even... permit this Juhu Beach. > Ātreya Ṛṣ > One industrialist friend, Patel's friend, who has come to Tehran, I visited him. Very, very rich industrialist. He built a temple, very nice temple, he said, and then the government was not pleased that he has built a temple, and they came and searched his house and gave him twenty million rupees' penalty. --- **[1975: Room Conversation](spoken/1975/750315r1.teh)** > If you simply remain in business to understand Kṛṣṇa, that's all. Therefore we are presenting so many books. Try to understand Kṛṣṇa, beginning with *Bhagavad-gītā.* The Kṛṣṇa says, *janma karma me ca divyaṁ*: "These are all divine, transcendental." *Yo jānāti tattvataḥ*. Anyone who knows that in truth, what is the result? The result is automatic. What is that? *Tyaktvā dehaṁ*. "When this body is given up," *mām eti*: "He comes to Me." Everything is automatic. Now they are manufacturing so many things, automatic machine. Just like in the airport, when you step in, the door is open, automatically. And they are declaring, "Wonderful thing happening." And where is this automatic—that you infect some disease, immediately suffer? Is it not automatic? Is it not better than the opening door? [laughter] > So nature is like that. Nature is acting exactly as the Supreme Lord desires. We say, just like we go the sea beach, such a big, vast ocean, at any second it can overflood the city, the Bombay city or the Los Angeles city or the seaside. Such big, big waves. But we are walking. I teach all these things. Here is the water and here is the land. Because I know. I know that water cannot come here, although it is ten feet. But for the ocean it is not difficult. It can cover immediately hundreds of miles and overflood. It is not very difficult. And it has happened so many times. Why it is not happening? They say nature. Nature is there, but nature is acting on the order of God. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. They are blind. Just like ordinary man, they are afraid of the police. But if a gentleman knows that "If I have not killed anyone, then what I have got connection with the police?" So this is the position. God is there. His power is acting, His laws is working. He is maintaining actually millions and trillions of living entities. And it has become a fashion that "Banish God; I am leader. I can do something good for you. What is Kṛṣṇa? What is Allah? It doesn't matter." --- **[1976: Morning Walk](spoken/1976/760315mw.may)** > [break]...*sama-darśinaḥ. Paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśinaḥ*. A *paṇḍita* is *sama-darśī.* He does not see anyone as low or high. That is *pāṇḍitya.* [true knowledge] There is a verse in *Bhagavad-gītā,* "One who sees Me in everything and everything in Me..." What is that verse? --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.37](spoken/1976/760315sb.may)** > Yasyaika-niśvasita-kālam athāvalambya jīvanti loma-vilajā jagad-aṇḍa-nāthāḥ* [Bs. 5.48]. So Brahmā is *jagad-aṇḍa-nātha.* He's the chief person within this material world..., in this universe. So he is in charge; therefore he was given the Vedic knowledge. And he got the Vedic knowledge, but at the same time, two demons known as Madhu-Kaiṭabha, they wanted to snatch away, take away the Vedic *mantras* from Brahmā. This is the attempt from the very beginning. The devotees following the disciplic succession of Brahmā... Just like we are. We belong to the *Brahma-sampradāya;* several times I have explained. So our original *guru* is Brahmā, Svayambhū. Therefore he is one of the great personality, *svayambhūr nāradaḥ śaṁbhuḥ kapilaḥ kaumāro manuḥ*. > So *sattva-guṇa* and *rajas-tamaḥ.* This material world, there is three qualities, so there is always struggle. If you want to remain in the *sattva-guṇa,* then the *rajas-tamo guṇa,* they will give you trouble. *Rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ. Tato rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye*.* So we are trying to introduce this *sattva-guṇa,* and above *sattva-guṇa, śuddha-sattva.* This *sattva-guṇa...* Just like sometimes we experience that one person is elevated to the brahminical principle, *sannyāsī* principle, but all of a sudden he falls down, he becomes a demon. We have got experience. He becomes demon. Very high... So this material world is so contaminated that even you are on the *sattva-guṇa,* there is chance of being contaminated by the *rajas-tamo guṇa.* The struggle is there. Therefore we have to become very, very careful. Or Kṛṣṇa will help. If you want to remain in *sattva-guṇa,* in purity, then Kṛṣṇa will help. Just like here, as soon as Brahmā was disturbed by the demons full of *rajo-guṇa* and *tamo-guṇa,* immediately the Lord came in Hayagrīva-*mūrti* incarnation. That is... Kṛṣṇa is also very much anxious to give us... *Kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ pranaśyati*. --- *Letters *[1967: Letter to Jadurani](letters/1967/670315_jadurani)** > I wish that you may enlarge one of them in painting.
