**Prabhupāda:** Now Arjuna is perplexed. He is perplexed in the matter whether to fight or not to fight. That was his perplexity. After seeing his relatives in front of him, with whom he was to fight, he was perplexed. And there was some argument also with Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa, of course, did not encourage him. Now, here is a point, that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. What is that?
**Prabhupāda:** Yes. Don't turn your attention. Just hear me. Kṛṣṇa, although He is present there, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but still, He did not encourage him. From worldly point of view, when somebody says that "I'll... I give it up. I don't want it. I don't want to fight with my friends or my relatives. Better let them enjoy. I shall forego my claim," from worldly point of view, this is a very, I mean, gentlemanly behavior, that one is foregoing his claim for the matter of his relatives or friends.
But Kṛṣṇa is not encouraging that proposal. We have to mark it. Kṛṣṇa is not encouraging. Kṛṣṇa is rather... Kṛṣṇa is, rather, inducing Arjuna that "It is not a very good proposal. It is not befitting your position. You belong to the Āryan family. You belong to the *kṣatriya,* royal family. And you are denying to fight? No, no, this is not good. And I am your friend. I have taken the responsibility of your chariot driver, and, if you do not fight, what people will say?" So He is not encouraging. Just see.

**Prabhupāda:** [aside:] Hare Kṛṣṇa. *Jaya.* [break] Hare Kṛṣṇa. [break] ...when I don't remain, "Get out." This is Māyāvāda philosophy. "So long I require your help, I catch your hand. And as soon as I don't require, 'Please get out.' " [break]
**Prabhupāda:** Yes. He..., he was worshiping Viṣṇu at home, and he was trying to kill Kṛṣṇa. [chuckles] Similarly, there are many Vaiṣṇavas like Jarāsandha—apparently worshiping Viṣṇu, but trying to kill Kṛṣṇa. Jarāsandha-Vaiṣṇava.
**Prabhupāda:** They will get material opulence. *Asuras,* they want material opulence. They, they do not understand what is spiritual life or spiritual happiness, what is devotional service. Neither they'd like to understand. Which way?

**[[spoken/750302ba.atl|Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Appearance Day Lecture — March 2, 1975, Atlanta]]**
**Prabhupāda:** ...auspicious day, hundred and one years ago, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, he appeared on this day. So Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura is *gaura-śakti. Gaura-śakti* means empowered, empowered by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, He wanted His mission to be broadcast...
*Pṛthivīte,* all over the world, as many towns and villages are there, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu predicted that His mission will be spread. This prediction was made by Caitanya Mahāprabhu personally five hundred years ago.
So perhaps my Guru Mahārāja, Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, attempted to fulfill the desire of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. And sometimes in the year 1918, he was *brahmacārī,* and Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, his material father, he wanted... Actually, he wanted, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. Of course, everyone wanted. But he wrote one small book, *Teachings of Lord Caitanya..., Teachings and Precepts of Lord Caitanya,* in 1896. And he presented that book to the McGill University in Canada. And he very much desired that the foreigners, especially Americans, would join this movement. That was his desire in 1896. And then, in 1918, my Guru Mahārāja started with this mission one institution known as Gauḍīya Math. Perhaps some of you know the name Gauḍīya Math. And he was trying to spread this message of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and by chance or by prediction, as you think, I was taken to Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura by one of my friends. I did not want to go there, but he forcibly took me there. Yes. And he ordered me that "You preach the cult of Caitanya Mahāprabhu in English language. This is very much essential." On the first meeting he told me like that. That was my first meeting with him. So at that time I was in favor of Gandhi's movement. So I said that "We are not independent—subjugated. Who will hear about our message?" So Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura refuted my argument. I was very much pleased. I had so many talks. But I was very much pleased to be defeated, that "This so-called nationalism or any 'ism,' they are all temporary. Real need is the self-realization."

This is a prayer offered by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī, the first *ācārya* in the line of Caitanya Mahāprabhu's Hare Kṛṣṇa movement. He was prime minister in the government, [indistinct] government, Muhammadan, Chand Ka.., Hussain Shah, the governor of Bengal. So when Caitanya Mahāprabhu started His movement, he and his brother Sanātana Gosvāmī resigned from the ministership of the government and became disciple of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. So when they first met Caitanya Mahāprabhu, they offered this prayer:

**Prabhupāda:** Matter is also there, but matter means it is sometimes manifest, sometimes not. But life is always existing.
**Prabhupāda:** Manifest. Just like this coat. It has not automatically come on my body. I have gathered it. Similarly, life is there, and it is gathering the matter to dress himself in a particular way. This is the varieties of life.
**Svarūpa Dāmodara:** We give that example that the difference between life and matter... We say that the difference is that the material living bodies... We live in a material body, but the material bodies, when a living entity stays inside a body, is fully automated, fully equipped.

**Tripurāri:** ...these are *prabhus* from different temples. Some work under the direction of the temple presidents and some work under my direction. But all these devotees distribute at the airports. Mostly big books.
**Prabhupāda:** That's fine. That is wanted. You are expert *mṛdaṅga* player? I have seen. He is very, very nice.
**Tripurāri:** Sometimes when we go to the temples they ask us to give class, *saṅkīrtana* class on book distribution techniques. We tell them that before you can take any techniques, first you must follow the principles and study the books.

**Dr. Wolf-Rottkay:** Śrīla Prabhupāda, they are used to cheating, and so they couldn't believe Kṛṣṇa either...
**Dr. Wolf-Rottkay:** They are used to cheating, and that's why they don't trust anything and anybody.
**Devotee (1):** The scientists, they cannot understand, for a long time, they cannot understand what is the relationship between the world of ideas, the world of names and the world that they see. How can we explain what that means?

**Hṛdayānanda:** There is a... There is a problem to some extent, but I don't think it should be exaggerated...
**Prabhupāda:** It can be organized. The children should be raised Kṛṣṇa devotees. The woman can be engaged. Everyone can be engaged. I can give you suggestion if you can execute.
**Hṛdayānanda:** Śrīla Prabhupāda, we were thinking that it would be nice to have the cities, city centers, for the preachers, and those, for example, women, children, it's much easier to maintain them on our farms. That way they can do a little work and produce their own food and...

Anantarām Śāstrījī*:* *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya. *[**Prabhupāda and **devotees repeat] *[chants verse; Prabhupāda and devotees respond]*
**Translation:** "My dear Lord, now I am completely experienced about worldly opulences enjoyed by all the living entities beginning from Lord Brahmā down to the ant, the so-called mystic power, and other material enjoyments like long duration of life, etc. Being completely experienced in them I do not wish to possess them. My dear Lord, therefore I request You to get me in touch with Your pure devotee and the service of him as sincere servant."

**[[spoken/770302r1.may|Room Conversation — March 2, 1977, Māyāpur]]**
**Prabhupāda:** In so many ways Kṛṣṇa is trying to convince that a living soul is different, completely different from matter. *Acchedyo 'yam adāhyo 'yam* [[bg/2/24|[Bg. 2.24] ]]: "It cannot be cut into pieces. It cannot be burned. It cannot be moistened. It cannot be dried up." In so many ways. "It does not take birth. It does not die. It is not finished after the body is finished." This is the greatest ignorance. And if they want to keep people in ignorance, that is not good business. In the name of education, cheating people. Why there should be education? What is the benefit?
**Girirāja:** Well, this gives excuse for unrestricted sense gratification, although actually there's no benefit of that. It just makes people more unhappy.
**Prabhupāda:** Without scientific knowledge the animals are also gratifying their senses. Why they take to the platform of education for sense gratification? What can be benefit? It doesn't require... *Viṣayaḥ khalu sarvataḥ syāt* [[sb/11/9/29|[SB. 11.9.29] ]]. Even the birds and beasts, they have got facilities for sense gratification. The pig, they have got very good facility for sense gratification—no distinction between mother, sister or anyone. The pig has got greater facility. So why in the name of education?
